I really liked him as an actor. 97 is a good long life.

There's another name to add to the list. The news just reported that Karl Malden has died at 97.

It has absolutely been an amazing week -

Ed McMahan
Farrah Fawcett
Michael Jackson
Billy Mayes

Just so sad. Makes you appreciate the time we do have here on this earth. Recently made me realize I need to start living and not letting my weight hold me back.

I had to look up who Billy Mays was. I didn't realize he was the OXI Clean guy. Oxi Clean is good, but it's not the miracle cleaner it claims to be. I tried it on some stains and it didn't get them out.

Although, I will say some of my colors did get a big brighter.

And if we're paying attention to these things, according to google news... the comedian Fred Travalina has died as well as Gale Storm. That's a blast from the past name for those of us of a "certain" age.

Pitchman dead: TV's Billy Mays found at his Florida home

Well, here is another one gone from a heart attack at the age of 50.

Hollywood beware...one more to come.

Really, all joking aside..some really sad loses for the industry and us.

Course, when this ad man came on...I turned an ran. I HATED his loud voice. I could not believe they were doing a show about pitchman.

LOL ! That's funny, Miss Twist. I hope the boss didn't notice the "unauthorized" activity. ;)

I read google news regularly. I'm not suprized, but I can't get over how many articles there are about MJ. It's close to 20,000.

It'll be interesting to hear what the coroner's final conclusion is.

the news crashed my office :-)

Someone called out the headline that he was in the hospital. So of course a bunch of us looked and it was only a matter of moments before the headline was changed to report the death. Someone else called that out loud, a third person said Oh $h1t! and everybody left their cube to gather around one computer and discuss what tidbits they'd been able to gather...

guess it doesn't matter what kind of network it is.

Miss Twist, it's interesting that you mentioned you text'd your BF. According to the news, all the phone services noticed a major spike in use when the announcement went out. they said that there were as many as 65,000 texts a minute.

That's amazing.

I have to admit, I was about to go online and email my cousins. but then I figured the 'net might be slow and I was right. the news crashed a bunch of news websites.

I think I started seeing headlines about him being hospitalized, then in a coma, and finally deceased around 3ish p.m. PST. By 4 and change I had already texted my bf.

Many radio stations have been playing his songs today and it's sort of been nice to hear them again. I was 11-12 when Thriller (the album) was released and that album and every hit it produced dominated our summer as kids. Immitating his dancing, the choreography... so it was sort of a nice stroll down memory lane.

good point vicki, but, if you go with the conceept of death in threes, does MJ's death mean another two will be passing away soon?

Miss Twist, when did they start posting MJ news on the internet ? I was reading google news off/on all day yesterday and didn't see a thing. Of course, I left here at 4:30pm EST.

Alica, while his death suprized me, the first reports of molestation did not. Do you guys remember an 80s show called Webster ? Well, the young teen who played Webster was very small for his age. He looked like a child even though he was older.

I remember seeing a picture of him with MJ. MJ was holding him like a small baby. I suspect he treated him like a baby too.

This wasn't the first time either. I'd seen all sorts of photos of MJ and children that made me worry.

Then... poor Bubbles... I'm sure if Bubbles could talk... it wouldn't be a pretty picture. When MJ got Bubbles he'd really gone over the deep end.

Still, I wasn't expecting his death. I loved the Jackson's as a kid and I love his stuff too.

Then he weirded out.

PS - I just heard this on NPR. Now, regarding that old wives tale about death happening in threes. Apparently, there is a pattern. It goes;

age, illness, sudden

I'd never heard that, but it makes sense this time i.e. Ed McMahon, Farrah and MJ.

okay, it's quiet at work and I have nothing productive to do with my time. ;)

As soon as I heard about Jackson, I thought, well, he's the third one.

I'm not surprised he's dead, he's been a train wreck for years. And I can't say I'm sorry he didn't make another comeback. Even though he was acquitted of all the child molestation charges, I can't help but think there had to be at least some truth in them. I remember one of the jurors in the last trial saying he knew Jackson was a molester after listening to all the evidence and testimony, the state just couldn't prove it in that particular case.

At the moment that the headline started switching from Michael Jackson in coma to Michael Jackson Dead - the MSN server failed and was displaying 'server too busy' messages.

That said - it was inevitable and not just because we're death ghouls. It's because it's Michael Jackson. Love him or hate him, he has left an absolute indellible mark on pop culture around the world.

Everyone knows Jackson 5 songs. Anyone in the world knows his name, regardless of the language they speak. Try to moonwalk and everyone will know what you're doing, including kids (even if badly), even though that dance move came out 20+ years ago.

Unlike many others who got spun into culture by marketing, kids, teens, and young adults wanted to be like Michael. By the time Thriller came out (and yes I bought the vinyl AND the cassette) an unnatural number of folks were wearing zipper jackets, 1 glove, those horribly big sunglasses, and trying to moonwalk. And some people today still do.

In the 80s, if any kid didn't know who Vicent Price was, they sure did after Thriller. That song, along with Billie Jean and Beat It are still parodied to this day. Beat It made Weird Al, and Thriller made MTV. Heck, I remember explaining to my french speaking friends what the words to the songs meant.

Even his fall from grace is still parodied. The words 'Jesus Juice' are now in our lexicon as a reference to giving kids wine.

Radio stations, regardless of their genre, played Michael Jackson songs yesterday, and even around town, people played his music on their car stereo as they drove around.

Personally - I liked his music from age 6 until he started looking like a white Diana Ross. From that point it just sort of lost it. But when you still hold the record of all time for most records sold with an album like Thriller that came out 25 years ago, I suppose there's nowhere else but down to go.

No, he wasn't a saint. But does embody the term pop icon.

i don't doubt that the internet slowed, we are all death ghouls. Me included. I did not think of Jackson death as a shock. He was heading that way from his first bad nose job. It will be interesting though to see what the coroner rules his death as.

There are already storys circulating that he was murdered.

I am most saddened by Farrah Fawcett's death. She fought the good fight and the damned cancer won anyway.

Ed McMahon lived a long good life (later years money issues not withstanding)

Call me a bit cynical but just wait, MJ will end up sounding like a saint when all is said and done. the king is dead, long live the king.

I turned on the news last night and was SHOCKED to hear that Michael Jackson had died !!!! I thought this must be a joke, but I was watching Brian Williams on the evening news. So, it had to be real.

Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett were not surprizing. Both had been fighting illness for some time.

However, MJ... WOW... You know there's an old wives tale that says that celebrity death always occur in threes. Well, when Farrah and Ed died, I was wondering who might be next.

MJ was a shock. According to the news, they're saying he died of cardiac arrest. They don't know what caused it, but that's what they are reporting.

If you check out google, there are 12,000 news articles posted about MJ. I hear the internet slowed down because of all the searches last night.
