An update - my little guy is now 7 and he's been doing the kids runs that accompany the adult runs for a few years now. He got to do the Evansville Half marathon twice now, since they lowered the age, and he's collecting medals like crazy! He can go about 2 miles without stopping now, and he's working up to 3. I just love it. :) I'm going to have to get him a medal hanger pretty soon, as we're running out of room on his bulletin board! :)

Enjoying every single moment I can with my husband and little boy!

They have a lot of choices and a training log. There are also medals for yearly challenges.

Hi gang!

Thanks for the responses! We were actually going to do the Evansville Half (I ran it, he was going to walk/run it virtually) but participants had to be 8 :( They have to do the last 1 mile there at the event, and he tuckers out after about .30 miles. Little legs :

I made him a sticker chart for every quarter mile, which is totally do-able for him, and I think I found a site online for virtual race medals, so we'll just do that and have it engraved.

Thanks everyone for your support :) He's interested in fitness and walking and he even lifts "weights" I made for him :) Now if I can just get him to do the whole "kids Yoga" video I got. It starts off well, but after about 15 minutes he's doing flips and somersaults in the living room. LOL!

While I don't know of any sites, I do want to say I think it is so awesome that he has gotten into running at such a young age. My daughter also had/has behavioral issues (she's 12 now) and I wish I would have thought of something like that to get her into when things were really intense with her. She's into running now and has really calmed down a lot and loves to do races and general fitness. I think it's so important to get kids into something like that early on, so they will be more developed and talented when they are older.

Have you checked Pinterest? I always find good ideas there - just search for 13.1 running medals. Or maybe you can check with a local sporting goods store that makes medals and trophies for local sports teams. Or if you want to personalize it more you could go to a jewelry store or Things Remembered type store and get something like a medal or dog tags engraved or stamped.
By the way, I think it's so awesome that your son is running/walking on the treadmill. It sounds really fun for both of you. I'm going to try this with my kids too. Thanks for the idea!

Have you googled "virtual races"? Here is one site that might have something you are looking for.

You can make them easily enough. But here's a better idea: Sign him up for a "Kid's Half-Marathon." These are fun. Just turn in the running log that you're already keeping and he runs/walks the final 1.1M at the event; gets a real 13.1 medal handed to him by a real race official.

I googled for one in your area and found this:
evansvillehalfmarathon.org/kids-run/

Ooh, you just missed it for this year. Perhaps there are others in nearby cities? They're becoming more common. My daughter did a Kid's Marathon in our area and loved it (and she's definitely not a runner)!

Ever since I started running, my 4-year-old son has been super excited about doing "fun runs" with me, and he's working on a really cool medal collection. :) He is highly motivated by bling.

We've had behavioral issues, so we've been "rewarding" him with time on the treadmill. (I know it sounds weird, but he just LOVES to walk on my treadmill while I do laundry. We have all the safety precautions taken care of, and he has a great time walking while I fold clothes.)

Anyway, we've been keeping a running total of his mileage (he tries to get a quarter mile each session) and coloring little footprints on chart. His goal, as he put it, was to walk a half-marathon. Obviously this is something we're doing in very small increments, but I want to give him a medal reward when he finishes 13.1 miles.

I want this to be a really big, super awesome cool medal, like what you might get at Disney or something. The fun run medals are usually cheapies, so I really don't mind spending some money on this one, to keep him interested. $25-40 maybe?

Does anyone have any recommendations for where I can get ONE medal that is really cool? A lot of the online sites have minimum orders, and I really don't need 24 of them. Any thoughts? I'm really open to anything, but I would like it to say 13.1. He's not as interested in trophies, so I'd rather stick with medal on a ribbon. Any place you all would recommend ordering one, or do they already have these available somewhere? I was REALLY hoping Disney had virtual runs because he's crazy into Mickey Mouse, but I couldn't find anything.

Thanks in advance! I hope this wasn't too weird a question!
