Thank you to everyone. I really didn't mean to bring this forum down. My run was good and looking forward to today's. You are all very thoughtful!

I'm ready for my long run this weekend. I'm coming up on my son's 2 year birthday. So many things will be going through my mind, it's been a lonnggg two years but at the same time - I can't believe he is already 2!!!

I can't wait to see what goofy things my mind thinks up this weekend.

Become 160 pounds by 12/25/11? Yes..I think so.

My second-to-last aunt just passed away April 27th. I've been making arrangements all morning. I will probably cry today. Not looking forward to it.

I often cry when I run. It's the overwhelming sobs that make it hard to run. The I can't catch my breath and my nose is running down my face sobbing. Don't really like that so much...

OK Sharon, I also have a thing for Joaquin (share birthday). Now you planted that seed.

I try not to think about my parents who passed in the last few yrs, but it has happened. Hard to run and cry.

Never math.

Singing on stage is a great fantasy. Takes your mind off of what's going on.

When in distress, breathing. Always keeps me going strong.

Today, probably recap the royal wedding (you can't help but watch it). Beautiful!

I do have to admit, I can see where wanting to be attacked by wild life or hit by a car can come up in a run. Been there. Might soon be there again. Training for my first Marathon. It's coming up in October. I am sure that by the time I'm doing my 4 hour run with nothing to look at but the highway and the sky, I'll be gladly looking for some kind of excitement on my journey.

I think about everything and nothing on my training runs. By everything, it can be what I have planned for the rest of the day, work and/or family-related stuff. And by nothing, well, I've found that running brings me much closer to that "Zen" state than any yoga or meditation class could ever do. I'm a blank slate on many of my runs, and it's good, because I stress out over too many details already!!!

But when I lived in Florida, I think much of my inner dialogue said, "wow, there are a lot of foreclosed homes here." LOL

Sharon - The raccoon comment cracked me up!

LOL & Zorched, that's funny!

I really, really hate my job, and one morning I was running and spotted a raccoon on the boardwalk. Since it's unusual to see raccoons out during daylight, I was thinking to myself, "Hmm, I wonder if that raccoon is rabid. Oh, if it's rabid and it bites me, then I won't have to go to work for a few days!". HA! Time to get a new job, ya think?

When racing, I just race. I do rolling checks, legs, arms, lungs, back, pace, etc. I do a pretty decent job focusing when I race.

Training just depends on the workout. I remember reading an article about mental toughness in training and Ryan Hall (If I'm remembering correctly) said that sometimes during peak training he found himself wishing he would get hit by a car just so he could quit running. I remember being glad that I wasn't the only one who had thoughts like that.

"Maybe Boston someday" has been officially replaced by "Boston fall of 2010."

If I'm out for a training run, I think about a million different things...
-how my life will be after I retire
-being Mrs. Joaquin Phoenix
-running the marathon in the Olympics
-getting mentally prepared for upcoming races

During a race, if I am "racing" it, I generally think of NOTHING except my pace, my breathing - I am constantly doing a head to toe check and making adjustments to have my best race ever.

If I am just running a race, I am mentally composing my race recap blog!

Funny thing. After submitting to this post, I was listening to my internal dialogue on the run today. All it had to say was "hehehehehehe. you're becoming a runner after all... lol" "you are actually starting to enjoy this aren't you????"

LOL!!!!! Hilarious! Okay I have 2 scenarios!

During a Race: I grunt and push so hard. I talk to myself as if I'm my father, telling myself to "Go...push harder!". Mentally I always want to be the 1st female finisher.

During a casual jog: I count light poles and try to keep my stride- 4 steps max. in between the poles! I run 4 poles, sprint my 5th, then repeat the cycle. Mainly its a numbers game going on in my head!

Rebel - see picture on my page - is great to run with (intervals). He likes to run for about 5 minutes really fast and then stop and sniff something! He enjoys long walks too (for easy days). You should research the dog's needs as far as water and what your breed of dog can handle in the form of running distances/times.

My dog is a siberian husky. He loves running. But I had to use a special halter to keep him from pulling me. It worked great. I am going to go and pick him up one of these days. train with him for a few months anyway. He's with my kids.

I guess as to suggesting if a pet is a good running partner, you have to look at what kind of pet and what the breed is. Are they even physically able to run? Are they well trained? to stay beside you and not trip or pull you? I find when I am tired, and having to push, I talk to Mickey. We talk about how far we've pushed, and if we can just push for so much longer, we can count today as a success.

That, and I actually do appreciate having to stop for his "bathroom" breaks along the way. That and a water break. I stop my music and we stop for a few minutes to refresh. I know I can do this without him, but it feels so much like cheating. Not so much when I'm doing it for him though...

I find myself chucking while reading these and being able to relate. I now know I'm not alone when I'm thinking crazy things. When I find myself focusing on breathing and steps I also find myself focusing on pain which is a bad thing.

One of the replies mentioned a dog as a running partner. It seems as though you don't have that anymore :( sorry to hear. Would you guys recommend a pet as a running partner? I keep considering that, thinking it will help keep my mind off of everything else negative.

Cool question.

I do a lot of math. Halfway to a quarter done, a third of the way to halfway, etc. Keeps my mind occupied.

I tend to have to focus on my breathing and putting one foot in front of the other.. But the background noise...

I work though anything that has been upsetting me
I figure out why I am crying - and yes, I often have tears running down my face and it has NOTHING to do with physical pain.
I think about when I was able to train with my puppy. I sure miss him.
I realize how much training i have ahead of me to finish the marathon in San Fransisco this fall.
I feel the sunshine on my skin.
I feel the wind in my hair.
I feel so free.
Oh look. A shiny thing...
That was pretty.
Run for cover! Hailstorm!!!

I try to clear my brain while I run but it seems like it's running right along with me. I hear my high school cross country coach and things I remember her yelling during races. I oddly enough have never thought about praying! I complain to myself about not having enough sit-down time to pray...but I don't need sit down time when I could be using running time! What good ideas from everyone.

A lot of the time I forgo listening to music because I don't like having that extra thing to carry- no matter how light and don't like having to worry about the headphones..ect.

Tonight I was running around a .8 mile loop around a park. And while it was so beautiful I was thinking : "hmm I wonder what other people think about..."

Tonight my main motivator was "open stride...use your arms"

I think about blogs to write.....and then never write them. I think of things I'd like to do to motivate others and then keep those things to myself because I think I'd come across as a crazy lady ;)

The further I run, the more that goes through my brain. I just enjoy each thought and go with it.

Great question!

If I ever catch myself getting negative I do math in my head - convert km's to miles or calculate my kph from my pace. I know, fighting fire with fire!

What do you think about while running? When you feel like stopping or are starting to wear down, what encouraging words do you tell yourself?

As for me, I usually get a real catchy tune in my head that I know all of the words to. That or I start counting my steps. Do you have any games to keep yourself from getting bored while running?
