St. Louis Half Marathon on April 10th and another half in the fall that I haven't decided on yet. I'll do some local 5 and 10K's too just for fun.

Has anyone ever run with a pace group in any of their races?

I haven't signed up yet but I plan on running in the Hyannis Marathon at the end of February. I never sign up early, just in case injury may prevent me from actually being able to race.

I'm only registered for one so far. It's the Gettysburg North/South Marathon on May 1st. It'll be my 2nd full marathon.

I know I'll do more races, but haven't figured out which ones yet. I try to do different ones every year, so I'm trying to do some research and find some interesting ones.

Two so far:
Country Music Marathon (half) in April
Madison Mini Marathon in August

I will plan to add a couple of others. Probably the Wine & Dine half marathon at Disney, MAYBE the Madison quarter or half marathon in May. I don't think I'm going to do as much racing in 2011 as I did in 2010, mainly because I will begin training for my 1st marathon towards the end of 2011 and I don't want to be too burnt out by then!!

Mommy ~ There's nothing like crossing that finish line of your first race no matter what the distance. What kept me going back was trying to beat my previous time each time I ran! I know you can do it as long as you can drag yourself out of bed in the morning. Perhaps you can find someone to commit to signing up with you. Then you'll feel obligated and will be less likely to back out.

Can't sign up until about a month before each race, but here are the local runs I am doing:

State Farm Run 5k March
Novartis Run 10k April
Lincoln Marathon volunteer May
Havelock Charity Run 10k June
Thunder Run 5k August
Buffalo Run 5 mile September
Holiday Run 5k December

I didn't think I'd be able to put any 10k races on my list, but considering I ran 5 miles recently, a 10k is very appropriate! I look forward to volunteering for the marathon this year. I'd like to run it in 2012.

Thank you for the 2 previous comments. I felt I should let you guys know thank you and its so very nice to hear! You guys are amazing! :) I have been running for over a year with a few breaks due to injury which has nothing to do with running. I have been through the C25K program 3 times already and am on the 4th time. I keep telling myself JUST DO IT Jodymarie! :) I know once I click submit on that registration button I will be happy. I glowand get excited and happy at just the thought. Once again you guys are sweet and I thank you! :-D

JodyMarie,

It took me 18 months after I started running to dare to run beyond the 5K distance and almost 2 years before I ran my first 1/2 marathon. It isn't the distance that makes a runner, but your heart and soul!

HAPPY SPARK RUNNING!

MOMMY31707 - There is no motivator quite like signing up for a race, especially your first. I don't think it matters either whether it is a 5K or a Marathon, knowing you have a race coming up just drives you to be ready to toe the line. Find one you like (based one where it is, the cause it supports, people you know who are running it, etc...) and sign up. You won't regret it!

WOW everyone and there 1/2-full marathons!! I feel like a wimp compared lol. Everyone is doing big ones even 10 milers.

I have NOT signed up for any but I soooo want to. I set goals to run some in 2010 and have run NONE. ONLY because I am so afraid...of not being able to do it. I know in order to get past it I just need to sign up (for 5 k's only) I have come close several times. I WILL sign up for one soon. My eye was on one for Jan 22. I think I am either going to just do it or have my husband sign me up. LOL its the initial hurdle of first time I need to get over!

GOOD LUCK everyone and GREAT JOB! You all are awesome! emoticon

Nancy - Thanks for that great post. You are so right that a lot of what I would call "recreational runners" get locked in on the distance they are running and act as if anything else doesn't count. I've seen it at every level, but it is probably worst amongst marathoners. Don't get me wrong, I have tremendous respect for marathoners (at least all but the celebrity/"let me train to run this one time in my life" marathoners) but dedicated runners are true runners, whatever distance they choose to run.

I too have not signed up for any 2011 races but have several planned. I believe my first will be the Tim Kennard 10 Mile River Run in Salisbury, MD on 3/6/11. So far, 10 milers are my favorite distance. It doesn't seem to be real common so I want to sign up for all of them that I can find.

Laurie,

Nope! I did enter the NYRR lottery for NYC and if I get in then I will, otherwise no can do.

I am reading a GREAT book titled Timeless Running Wisdom. It is a book featuring some of the most notable runners of our time and Kathrine Switzer talks about the marathon and how it has become the holy grail of racing. BUT, because so many runners only live to run the marathon they miss out so much on what running is really all about.

She stated that one of the world's greatest runners, Jesse Owens, never ran a marathon and he WAS A RUNNER!

So many runners take up running only to say they ran a marathon and either end up injured or hating every minute of running that it becomes a chore. They want to run a marathon within their first year and instead of allowing their bodies to adapt to running, they have to adapt their running to their injured body.

The distance is to be respected, but if you NEVER run a marathon, never feel you are any less of a runner...you are a SMART runner for knowing and listening to your body, especially for us older folks. And when and if you ever feel ready, you will be ready.

HAPPY SPARK RUNNING!
Nancy
