I have only missed one race - a 10k about a month ago - because I wrote down the wrong directions to the race, lol. Luckily it wasn't far from home, and I just ended up taking a really nice hike that day instead. And the race entry was only $7 because of my membership with a local athletic organization, so not too bad!

I have a faint memory of missing a 5k somewhere along the line, but it might be me just remembering all those times I wanted to stay in bed!!!

I've missed two races. The first was a 5K this past March because there was a bad Nor'easter snowstorm and I was afraid to drive to the event over 30 miles away.

The second was supposed to be my first marathon in October because of a bad hip. I lost $60 on that one and was totally bummed to drop out.

I can only think of once race that I backed out on at the last minute due to a cold. If you're in a state due to illness or injury that your body is tell you not to get off the couch, then definitely stay home. But if you're just not feeling your best, I've found that the adrenalin of the race is usually enought to get you though it.

It hasn't happened to me yet in a year of racing. I'd have to be pretty sick or injured not to do one, I think!

I missed two. One was a 1/2 and I had stomach flu. The other was a 5k and it was because my bus drove right past me. I guess he did not see me. Anyway no other way of getting there so I missed it. Last year I had signed up for a 1/2 and thought I would be ready but was no where near ready and so I switched with a friend she did the 1/2 and I did the 5K. They switched our names.

The cost of all three is way more than I care to calculate. We are talking way over a hundred.

I've only bailed on one, a charity 5k that I normally love to do but was too exhausted from my long training run the day before. (16 miles.) Didn't lose any $ but didn't get to support the cause. :(

I can think of three races I didn't end up doing over the past few years. They were all ones I registered very early for at discounted rates. I don't think it's a big deal and chalk it up to the cost of loving races!

The only one I've had to bail on was just a local charity 2 miler. My step daughter ended up having an away soccer game, so we went to that instead. It was only like $15 or so.

Healthy heart 10k due to food poisoning and now the Boston mini due to schedule conflicts. Amount lost on both combined. $53.

I'm too chicken to back out. I'd rather dnf then dns. I would back out if medically necessary.

I had to bail on a Memorial Day 10k a couple years ago because, well, I got cramps (yes, those kind of cramps) the night before and I knew that if I ran the race I'd get them again. Nothing worse than being stuck in the middle of somewhere with bad cramps. That's been it, just one race.

There was a 5K back in 2006 that I skipped when I got sick. I was injured for the Palm Beach HM last year. The race organizers were trying out a cycle on the marathon route, and they let me switch my entry to that instead.

I bailed on my first scheduled 1/2 marathon in 2007 due to an acute case of PF. Just recently bailed on the Napa to Sonoma 1/2 Marathon this past July--deferred until 2011 since I decided to run the Chicago RnR 1/2- 2 weeks earlier and I was running out of travel funds.

Oh yeah, Chicago Marathon this year...just did not feel the love of the training in triple digit temps...best decision I ever made.

I am calling this my year of DNS!
Newport Oregon Marathon, tranfered my entry legally to a friend who ran it as her very first marathon and SMOKED it! I was able to be there as a volunteer instead. I lost $90 on that one.

Portland Marathon this month, I sold my bib to another friend, who would have PR'd, BUT since she was running under my name (I'm SLOW), she waited around in the finishing shoot for over 30 minutes for another of our friends to get there before she crossed the finish line with her.

Hood to Coast Relay...I transfered my entry legally...and rode along in Van 1 as the timer. Lost either $110 or $130...don't remember what last year's entry fee was for it.

Sigh.

The only race is had to abandon was the Disney Half last year. I got to watch it in the snow with my big black boot on.

I did let a friend run it under my name (SHHHHHH) - I kept the shirt, but she got the medal - she would of never been able to afford a race like that.

I do have an awesome PR to my name from her - one I will never equal - something like 2:11.

So far the only one will be the Ghostly Gecko 5k that is this Saturday night as I opted to run the Halloween HM in Miami Beach on Sunday and I'm leaving Saturday to spend the night there.

I lost $28 but I'm on my way to the store now to pick up my race packet and get my tech shirt so it's not a total loss. (the tech shirt is really cool!)

LIGHTNINGRUNNER - Luckily so far I have not had to miss any races that I have signed up for. I can't imagine changing my mind. I can see an injury getting in the way, but I think I would probably still show up and walk the race, if able, cheer others on, and/or volunteer to help with the race. Illness would be the one thing (other than an emergency) that I could see keeping me from a race. Thankfully I believe my training has generally kept me healthier than usual though.

I was wondering how many races you have signed up for then don't do them....due to illness, injury, or just a change of mind.

What is the most you have lost, dollar wise because of it?

Did or were you able to transfer your race entry to someone else - legally or illegally (someone racing under your name)
