an extreme amount of swelling is (of course) not good. I have a bit of swelling for most of my longer races. Enough that I now take my rings of before the race. I fear that one of these days they might need to be cut off. I also know that (for me) it's not over hydration - still I think that it's a issue you need to be aware of.

My sister suffers from this when she goes out for walks.

LOL. I can imagine the responses to THAT topic: "Try a clothespin." or "Use more deodorant."

Nancy, thanks so much for the great links, I think I need to up my salt intake and watch the water intake, especially during cooler weather.

My goals:
1. Accept and be grateful for my body and my metabolism as they are. No feeling sorry for myself.
2. Veggies and protein at every meal. Track on WW purple plan. Try for 14 hours fasting every 24, when possible due to exercise schedule.
3. No guilt when I am unable to stay on plan. When I get off track, get back on ASAP.

This is why I'm considering one of those fancy scales that calculates hydration and body fat.

Hi evetyone,

it happens to me when it is hot.

My solution is to run inside on a treadmill.

Another really great link...This one actually explains why hyponatremia is a bigger problem with beginner runners (marathoners) and slower runners as well. VERY INSIGHTFUL...PLEASE READ!

Sounds like a hydration issue...see the following quote from Nancy Clark

* Dehydration is more common than overhydration, but overhydration to the point of hyponatremia (low blood sodium) is very dangerous and can escalate into seizures, coma and death. The symptoms (that become increasingly severe), include headache, vomiting, swollen hands and feet, undue fatigue, confusion (due to progressive swelling of water in the brain) and wheezing (due to water in the lungs).

Hope this helps!

HAPPY RUNNING!
Nancy

PS. Below is an article on hyponatremia (low blood sodium) and it also list swollen hands and feet in the symptoms list.

www.amaasportsmed.org/programs/hypon
at
remia.pdf

I just read that many race directors are asking runners to put their pre-run weight on the back side of their bibs this way if one develops problems (hyponatremia-especially) they will not try to load you up with more fluids (if you weigh more than your weight on the back) which will only exaccerbate the issue at hand. And if you don't think this is an issue, even one of the elite runners at Boston died from this issue a few years ago. PLEASE read up on proper hydration techniques in the previous link.

This is interesting, because I, too, tend to get swollen on long runs. I always wondered if that had something to do with an electrolyte imbalance? Of course, it happens when it is really cold out, but also when warm, so I don't think it's a temperature thing. If someone has an explanation and how to prevent it, that would be great. I usually don't worry about it, because it is not that extreme and interesting enough, my right hand seems to be worse, always!

I, too, have a problem with swelling, but its mostly in my right hand, and moreso when it's hot. Yesterday I did a 5 mile run/walk with a friend and at the end of the run/walk my right hand was swollen. The temp was in the low 80's (at 10:00 a.m.).

Should I be eating more salty foods or less? Drinking more? I run with my hands at waist level.

Not a lot of salty foods; actually I didn't eat enough. I drank at every mile marker; both Gatorade and water.

My hands are at my waist; and shoes are fine....

Are you holding your hands up at least around your waist while you run?

Are you eating a lot of salty foods the night before?

Are your shoes ties too tightly?

Are you hydrated enough?

I ran the NYC marathon; and my hands and feet got extremely swollen. I am running a half marathon in a few weeks; and am concerned this may happen again. Any suggestions how to prevent this? Or why it happens? Thanks!
