My favorite place is Red Bowl Asian Bistro. You can order brown rice, mixed veggies, and shrimp or chicken. It's a healthy meal. I also tell them no salt and light sauce.

We'll have to try Miyo's. I love Chinese food but usually avoid it because the msg gives me migraines. Thanks for the tip!

My favorite place to eat in Columbia when I'm craving Chinese is Miyo's. They have several locations. I'm sensitive to MSG, but they don't use it. You can get great healthy selections there too.

I like the Mediterranean Tea Room on Devine. It's not fancy but they have good food.

After reading all the entries here, I'm going to have to try the Blue Cactus. Sounds great.

If you haven't been to Z's Pizza on Gervais, you are really missing out!!!

You can eat a slice of one of the rustica pizzas for just 70 calories per slice!! Also, since you are sensitive to some foods, it may be helpful to know that they even have a special Gluten-free pizza, and have many healthy options. I could eat there everyday!!!

Hi,
emoticon
I am looking through all the messages and I am getting hungry. I just wish I could eat like some of you can when you go out. I have to be very careful what I eat or I get a reaction to the food. So whenever I go out to eat in a restaurant I order - plain chicken (no spices), smashed potatoes( nothing on), veggies (no spices just plain). Sweet Tea to drink. I like O'Charley's since they are very good with my food and I have no problem. I would love to try Chinese or Japanese food but I would end up in the hospital real fast.

There is a cafe in Sandhill's that serve great sandwiches and I enjoy going there. You eat outside and it is just great.

I do wish restaurants would post their nutrition information online! I do know that their salads are huge and very good. Maybe you could just search for another salad in the Spark database and use that as an estimate.

We like Arizona's and Village Bistro. We've tried most of both menus already and never had a bad meal. Village Bistro has fantastic she crab soup and Arizona's has a great veggie plate with black beans.

There's a small Japanese restaurant called Washabi about 1/4 mile from Meinike. They have some healthy choices, good prices and a nice atmosphere. We've eaten there a few times. It's right next door to a Mexican restaurant.

We went to Travinia's on Sparkleberry again last night. I've added a resource listing for it. The atmosphere and food are always fantastic - although I'm not sure how low calorie the meals are!

If you decide to splurge on calories and order dessert, split one. The desserts are more than enough for two people!

That's for sure - she will also steer you in the right direction as to the level of spiciness - take her recommendations, at least the first time.

I love their Korean stews and the Be Bim Bop. We have liked everything we've tried -- especially the kim chee plate. My husband spent 2 years in Korea and says the food is authentic and just as good as he ate in country.

Thanks for the link! I checked it out and the menu looks terrific! I'm a big proponent of the slow food movement, too, so this is a great opportunity to eat some slow food!

I appreciate the info. Any recommendations for a first timer?

Blue Cactus is still my favorite place in Columbia. Mind you, they are closed this week for the holidays.

Also note, they have a diverse menu of Korean and Tex-Mex food. Not fusion, not authentic Mexican. Make sure you know what you are getting into before you go...:)

As someone who just moved here from the West, I have to put in my 2 cents' that never have I had such mediocre Mexican fusion as at Moe's. After all the hype from Columbians, husband and I were incredibly disappointed!

I AM very interested in this Blue cactus place that everyone is mentioning. Where is it?

Like HEIDIANNE, I love Zoe's on Forest Drive (though you shouldn't go if you don't like chicken!). I also love Pho Viet, a new vietnamese noodle shop on Decker. I feel like Decker road is a wealth of Asian restaurants, but Pho Viet is the crown jewel: their noodle soups are delicious, huge, and very filling without being fatty or greasy!

The newest restaurant I am just thrilled about in Lexington is:
Fusion Bowl
5166 Sunset Blvd., Suite. E (Hwy 378)
Lexington , SC 29072
(803)-996-1333

They have brown rice as one of three rice choices and the vegetables and other foods are so fresh and beautiful in color. They have everything from sushi to bourbon chicken.

Also, an old favorite is the Mediterranean Cafe in their new location on West Main (Hwy 1) near Lexington Arms ((803) 356-6294). Their vegetables are always fantastic and they have really reasonably priced dishes.

In the Harbison area, there is a chinese restaurant (Sun Ming's) near Lake Murray/St. Andrews intersection which has diet friendly and low sodium foods. Also, I find that japanese restaurants (Inakaya...though i like the one at Oneil Ct better) are good to try also, since you can have chicken, etc without ordering rice or noodles. (or the rest of your family can have those items off your order!). I also like Al Amir's (on St Andrews) because they have good grilled veggies with their dishes, and also because kebabs (even though they are served with a side of rice...I just don't have it) are mostly low carb/high protein. Lastly, Moe's items without rice or tortilla/fried tortilla bowl are good options (watch the cheese, sour cream and guac!)

Hope this helps!

We ate at fuddruckers today and I customized my meal a little bit to make it healthier I got a turkey burger and ditched the bun. Then I loaded it up with some lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and some of that salsa stuff they have. I only cut off one piece at a time too so it made me eat slower than normal, which made me fuller. My kids were acually done eating before me which is really uncommon. They have veggie burger's too but I wasn't sure what veggies were in them.

Hey There! Two of my favorites that are pretty healthy are the "healthy choice" at the Gourmet Shop in Five points (soooo good and all good fats, veggie, etc.) and Zoe's on Forest DRive. They are both great and have lots of healthy menu choices!

Yes,you are correct HEDIANNE. I found out the hard way buy eating two rolls the last time (600 + calories just for 2 rolls). I check now before I go to any restaurant providing they have the the nutrition page on the website. If not I eat something I know the calories. Or I share with my husband which cuts the calories in half.

Just stay away from the bread rolls, HoneyBee - last time I looked they were 300+ calories each so I reluctantly leave them alone when we go to O'Charleys!

We went to O'Charley's for our 44th Wedding Anniversary on Friday. As always the food was delicious. The grilled chicken melts in your mouth and the veggies tender.

We took home a delicious piece of a five layer chocolate cake with fudge icing. My husband and I shared since I wanted a piece of cake but didn't want all the calories but it was a special occasion and the cake was great.

You are right HEDIANNE Which Wich sandwiches are very good and filling. I haven't tried Brixx or Arizona yet. The Asian Red Bowl I thought was excellent. I had the steamed scallops and vegetables with brown rice - very good flavor and filling.

We tried Brixx pizza a couple of weeks ago and it was very good. Which Wich is right across from there and has very filling sandwiches including a good selection of vegetarian ones. The veggie sandwiches I have tried so far fill me up so much more than a veggie sub but maybe it's just my taste buds that are more satisfied because of all the veggie subs I've eaten over the years.

I live close to the Village at Sandhill and these are my opinions of the restaurants I and my family have tried there.

I've been to Arizona's 2x. The first time had the granny smith apple salad that was way overpriced in my opinion. The second time just had key lime pie which was amazing! My fellow diners also really enjoyed the desserts they had (can't remember what they were though). I will definitely ask for Tiffany next time we go!

Red Bowl is also a very good choice. Their Pad Thai is not low fat (even vegetarian style) but very good. Their vegetable spring rolls are excellent (especially the dipping sauce). Tried the steamed vegetables and didn't like it at all (I assume they think anyone who orders that dish is on a diet and wants ONLY low fat/low cal). I'm still hoping to try other vegetarian dishes that could be good such as sesame tofu and broccoli with garlic sauce. The other thing nice about Red Bowl is that you can request brown rice.

I am dying to try Brixx pizza! Their menu looks fabulous. They even have vegan cheese!

We tried Rita's a few weeks ago right after it opened. The custard is quite good. I had a kiddie cup which nearly ruined my diet despite it's smallness. It cannot compare to Abbott's Frozen Custard in my Mom's hometown of Rochester, NY.

I agree with Arizona's and the veggie plate; SOOO good! TGIFridays though- does not have nutritional information on the web. I do really like Red Bowl in Sandhill.

We always enjoy Arizonas - I usually get the tuna or the black bean vegetarian dish. The atmosphere is really classy but the prices are about the same as other places in the Northeast. Going there always feels like a date instead of just eating dinner because I forgot to take something out of the freezer!

We ate at a Mediterranean restaurant Friday night and the food and prices were great. It's hard to find good lamb around here but their lamb was tender and not overpowered with garlic. I don't remember the name of the place but it's next door to H H Gregg in Harbison.

The best restaurant here in the Northeast is Arizona's at Sandhill. It's excellent. Prices range from $8.95 - $28.95. Look for the commerical for this restaurant in the next week or two. It would be a great place to go for Father's Day and Mother's Day was packed. Ask for me...I work there. Tiffany. The best server there in my opinion, you come and tell me how I do. Salads are great and we can cater to yours needs for any diet.

Thanks, RGee - I prefer to stay away from unhealthy options until I get back to where I was before I gained the end-of-semester pounds!

FYI, Pita Pit is a few doors down from Blue Cactus.

I've been to Island Spice a few times. Take Out is a better option there since there isn't much of a reason to dine in. The food was tasty, but I haven't eaten it since I started on SP...I can't recall many "healthy" options.

Thanks for the recommendations and welcome to Spark and to the team.

We saw a sign to a Jamaican Restaurant on Two Notch the other day - I think the name is Island Spice. Has anyone been there?

Hi. I just joined sparkpeople. Reading over some of your recommendations. I'll have to check out that Blue Cactus.... But I wanted to put in my two cents.
Well if you want a good lunch (or late night eatery) try PitaPit. It's right over in 5 points on Greene St. Love it. They have tons of options for veggies and you can get it with or without the pita. Just watch out for the cheeses or sauces that can add on calories. You can also go to their website www.pitapitusa.com/ and build a pita that helps keep the calories in mind. You could even split it in half and save part for later, if you wanted to "splurge". Also, if you really want to do good, if you work downtown, it's about a 15-20 minute walk to 5 points and back. A friend and I figured out we could walk there, get food, and walk back during our lunch break.
Also, if you're interested in good sushi/Japanese food, definitely check out Sakura www.sakurasc1.com/home.html They were the first Japanese restaurant in Columbia (since 1986) and have pretty authentic food. But the place is pretty small. You can do take out from them too, which is nice if you, like me, don't like smelling like sushi when you leave the restaurant. Oh and it can be hard to find. It's near the corner of Forest Drive and Trenholm, behind Talbot's and the furniture store.
Hope these help!

I am being taken to Hampton Street Vineyard tomorrow for a company luncheon. I haven't eaten out yet since I started SPARK and I am a little nervous about what to eat. I don't want to overdo it! Any suggestions for low cal food from Hampton Street Vineyard?
