Sherry,

I sure hope you get to walk with us too! We are still meeting at Presque Isle on Saturday mornings at 9 ... parking lot #4. Any other time you are available let us know too. I will be starting a new job on August 11. so my days will be ending at 3pm ... on most days that gives me plenty of time to walk later in the afternoon.

I'm glad to hear you've been walking a lot ... my normal daily steps at school is around 5000 unless we take the kids on a field trip ... then I'm up around 7500 to 10000. I've been trying to get a couple of extra walks in each week.

Hope to see you at PI.

PS. I sure hope you are posting those 10000 steps daily on our monthly challenge ... we need all the help we can get if we are going to make it to Cincinnati!

Just click "join goal" and start tracking. We only have a few days left ... and a long way to go!

I have been walking at least 10,000 steps daily, sometimes more and a few times less. I have to get a new battery for my pedometer. I hope to be able to walk with the team on Presque Isle before the summer ends. Hugs, Sherry

Just let us know on the boards when you will be available and we will try to work something out. Anyone can set up a team walk. I've set up some when a few can walk ... and have walked alone (with my MP3 player) a couple of times. There is usually someone available to walk.

I too like to write down everything I eat. I have one of the daytimers for diabetics where you can write down your BS and write down what you eat. I keep track of the carbs. I would like to walk with you guys. Can I get hold of you on a day when I'll be in Erie.
My hubby likes to fish there and I have to go to the rheumy once in a while. CC

Joymiko,

Welcome ... you have come to the right place. We are a bunch of great people with very different ideas about how we want to lose weight. The thing we have in common is that we do want to start eating right, get exercise, and become healthier, live longer, and lose weight in the process.

I hope you will check out everything on SparkPeople, and use what you find. The biggest thing I have found that helps is tracking my daily food intake. It has become a part of my daily routine. I charted for about a week and was amazed at all the calories that were in some of the foods I thought were "healthy!" Once I learned what to avoid, it became easy to find things that I could eat.

I hope you will join us for one of our Saturday morning walks at Presque Isle ... info will be posted on the "let's Plan a Team Walk" thread, along with other days we try to meet in between. The only set day has become the Saturday morning walk - meet at 8:45 a.m. - walk at 9 a.m. We start from #4 parking lot (Sturgeon Bay lot).

Visit our message boards as often as you can ... ask lots of questions ... and someone here should be able to answer it for you!

We've all lost and gained weight (probably many times over) and hopefully our experiences will help you along the way!

Joy-
One more thing to try with your $7 pedometer before you give up... Try clipping it on your belt closer to your navel than your hip. Mine won't register if it's hanging funny or in my pocket. I don't know if that will work for you, but it's a thought. emoticon

Hope you had a great trip anyways!

The $7 from WalMart is the one I bought. If it doesn't lie flat against me, it doesn't work, and I'm not flat...... I'll try what you suggested.

Howdy stranger ... welcome back. I didn't expect to see you here until Monday! Hope you had a great time at camp! We missed you!

Becky and I both got the same pedometer at Walmart ... about $7 ... seems to work great!

You can figure out your steps this way ... just figure out your distance and for each mile you just have to guesstimate about 2700 steps! I tracked my steps for 1/10th mile and found I do about 260 steps. You have a shorter stride than I do so you could take around 270 steps easily.

Glad to have you back ...

I am so frustrated. I bought a new pedometer to take camping with me, and after a 3 1/2 hour hike up a mountain, thru the woods, over logs and rocks, and hiking back down the mountain, and the walk back to camp, it showed I had taken 597 steps... WRONG! So I guess I'm going to go to Dicks or Gander Mountain, or one of the other sports stores, and check out a couple that have been reccommended to me. So I tried.. Gave up using it after 2 or 3 days of the same thing. Sorry team....

I will just have to make a resolution to put it on for at least 1 game next week so if nothing else I can estimate the rest!

I've been tracking every day so far ... some days have definitely been better than others.

7/1-2600+ had to guesstimate
7/2-5120+ had to guesstimate
7/3-3900+ had to guesstimate
7/4-7687
7/5-8537
7/6-2162
7/7-7304
7/8-2786
7/9-3996
7/10-5724
7/11-7261 so far ... today was field trip day so we walked about 3 miles and I made the kids 'move it, move it, move it'! We had a great time ... but I am exhausted!

I sure would like to see more people signed up to do the challenge ... all it takes is a pedometer. Put it on in the morning and track the steps you take through out the day. When you are out walking mark off a mile route and try to determine how many steps you take in one tenth of a mile multiply that by 10 and every time you complete your route you can post that many steps.

Most day I track at least 2600 steps without much activity. It only takes about 11 people a day to reach our daily goal ... so start tracking!!!

I remembered to track most of my steps today! Didn't even have a chance to ref with it on yet and still got over 5000. That did include my mini mall excursion emoticon and grocery shopping emoticon and walking to & from the gym. emoticon Today was a very busy day! I'm curious to see how many I'll clock tomorrow on laundry day!

WooHoo ... maybe we should make teams ... you can be on mine!!!

I still have to learn how to record my stride ... I know I didn't get enough steps today. We walked about a mile, but it only recorded a little over 2100 steps, and that counted all my normal around the house and doing yard work steps. When I tested at Presque Isle last week I found I take about 260 steps for a tenth of a mile ... so hubby and I should have clocked at least 2600 steps just on our walk to the club. I'm think I kept pace with him and his stride is probably longer.

I put mine on my night stand at night and then clip it to my pocket when I get my clothes out in the morning. That way I have it on when I get dressed each day. It helps if you put it with something you won't leave home without ... maybe you can clip it to your key chain!

Joy won't be back until the 14th so I'm hoping she is keeping track of all her mountain hikes ... maybe she and Carra will have oodles of steps to post for the team!

I'm guilty! I'm guilty! emoticon I bought that pedometer and haven't put it on! emoticon I just added "counting my steps" on my goal page- hopefully that will remind me!

I'm also gonna put this little pedometer to the ultimate test- I'll try reffing my soccer games with it on. That should up our steps! emoticon

July Challenge...WE ARE FALLING BEHIND!!! emoticon

It's already day 6 and the team isn't keeping up with our walking challenge. We hadn't even met one day of steps yet.

I can't believe that we aren't walking ... I think we just aren't recording our steps. So ... lets get those steps recorded! If you don't have a pedometer and know the miles you are walking ... try to estimate the steps. For example ... when I walk at Presque Isle there are tenth of a mile markers ... it takes me 260 steps to walk one tenth of a mile ... so I estimate that I take 2600 steps every mile I walk.

It will only take 10 people walking a little over a mile a day to reach our goal. (or 20 people walking 1/2 mile, or 40 people walking 1/4 mile etc,) We'll also need 10 people to walk an extra 1/2 mile for the next 10 days so we can get back on track. It would be nice to walk the distance it takes to get to Cincinnati where SparkPeople is located...GO TEAM!!! emoticon

Becky,

That could be the same one ... mine is about 1 inch high and 3 inches wide ... has a little curve so it fits nicely in pocket or on waist band.

I picked up Shelley this morning and we went to Presque Isle ... the weather was beautiful ... I think I could do that almost any morning. I didn't really expect too many since this was a holiday weekend. We walked 5668 steps ... pedometer said 2.6 miles.

I see we are a little behind in our challenge ... not because I don't think anyone is walking ... I think they aren't tracking.

If 10 people walk a little over a mile a day we will have it made ... in my strides that's about 2600 steps! We should all be able to do that in normal daily activities ...

emoticon HURRAY ...HURRAY emoticon

I have a new pedometer ... got it today from Walmart It tells time, records steps, miles, and calories burned ... and clips nicely onto my pocket ... IT'S GREAT! No more guesstimating. I actually think I've been tracking lower that my actual steps. So far today I have 4400 steps just from walking around Wal-mart and Lowes ... not slow window shopping ... but trying to get from place to place in a hurry so I could get back home to work in my yard.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to track the strength training involved in lifting 96 bricks to my cart (one at a time) and then loading them into my van! I also loaded 2 bags of river rock into my cart ... but let someone else get them into my car!

Enjoy your 4th ...

Joy ... have fun ... I wish I could take a vacation in a cabin in the woods ... I need it! Just to get away from work for a while would almost be vacation enough. I think it's time to hold Dan to his promise of a vacation someplace nice when he was done traveling ... it's been 3 months and I think I'm ready!

OK Sparkers, It's July 1, and time to start a new challenge. Track your steps and miles, and post them. Remember to drink your water. Good luck to everyone..

I found this on another site regarding exercise, I thought it worthy to share and might help others as it helps me.

MASTER MAINTENANCE!

So, you have started your exercise program. Maybe you have stopped seeing results. Maybe you are starting to lose motivation. Maintaining your healthy behavior for the rest of your life is your goal -- and your challenge. It's not always easy.

Here are some tips to keep the change when you're tempted not to:

Cut yourself some slack. The old couch was calling you back and you gave in. But don't give up. Setbacks happen. Falling off track doesn't mean throwing in the towel. Remind yourself that change takes time. Then lace up your sneakers, and get back on track.

Have a plan. Identify your roadblocks and find ways around them. For instance, your fitness routine easily could run off track during the holidays, business travel, and vacations. Look for hotels with a health club, or pack a jump rope in your suitcase. Include a walking or biking tour of scenic or historic places in your vacation plans.

Review your goals. If you start to feel it's just not worth it, think about why you decided to change in the first place. Maybe you wanted to lose weight and being active helped you do it. Perhaps you've lowered your blood pressure or are beginning to control your diabetes. Reminding yourself of the goals you've realized and the ones you're still striving for will help you push ahead.

Mobilize your support system. Call on friends, family members, or coworkers who have been your cheerleaders. They can encourage you to stick with it. Maybe you've formed or joined a support group. Don't hesitate to connect with others who are working on the same change.

Have confidence. Believe in yourself and don't question your ability to change. If you fail once, try again. Try something else. And learn from your mistakes. With patience and determination, you can change your life.

For July, let's everybody WALK. If you can't join the rest of the team for the team walks, get out on your own. Get your pedometer on, and track how far you've walked, and how many steps. Walk every day possible, and post daily to keep track. Let's see how many steps and how many miles our little team can do during July!
