The Yoga Project in Sellwood offers a class called “Yoga for the Larger Woman”. It’s a unique program where all body types are invited and celebrated. Each movement is designed to bring that mind body connection without causing shame or frustration at size limitations. Vilma, our amazing instructor, encourages challenge with No Pain.

I was always interested in taking yoga but the thought of going into a studio where tiny, firm women are encased in lycra and have no fat rolls to work around was a little intimidating. I did a little research online and found The Yoga Project and thought, okay, this is it! The universe just handed me this gift and I have to accept. I emailed them (less threatening) and received the nicest correspondence in return that made me feel comfortable pushing out of my comfort zone. Vilma is tiny but she’s size accepting. She’s just glad we’re there and it’s made SUCH a difference. I’m more limber, less sore when I get out of bed. My stress level is down, my blood pressure is down and I feel more connected to my body and can feel when things are out of whack. I would like to encourage anyone who is curious about the benefits of yoga but maybe are shy or think they’re too big or too small or too purple or whatever. Come and try the class! Take 1 ½ hours for yourself just once a week…it makes a HUGE difference. You don’t have to be large but you do have to be size accepting and welcome all body types into your practice.

What’s sad to me is that it’s a “Mom and Pop” studio, they’ve been there for years. They have a small but fiercely dedicated following. And a few weeks ago a studio opened across the street from them - A big corporate yoga-farm. I don’t care how much money they have or make…you can’t buy heart like the instructors at The Yoga Project have ; or the experience of being in a place where your body is beautiful and you fit in and feel comfortable in your skin.
Anyway, I just wanted to get the word out…try it if it sounds interesting. Learn to love your body and find out what it’s capable of. I guarantee it’s capable of more than you think! I hope to see you in class!
Oh, and P.S. Next term they’re adding another Larger Woman class on Saturday I believe.
