WAY TO GO HEATHER!!! Wow, that's commitment. I lost weight, so that's definitely good - and I lost a few inches which is even better. I didn't commit to anything in particular, but June will be better. I will think tomorrow about specific June goals. I didn't hit the 180's like I had hoped, but have a feeling it will happen tomorrow morning. It would be a God thing as I haven't been my best this last week.

Last day of May! How'd everyone do with their goals?

I stayed with the bootcamp for the whole month! I did a video everyday, except for this past Thurs I missed it so I doubled up on Friday and I worked out at least 30 min 5 days a week! I'm going to update my blog soon on my results.

I tracked my food daily as well and I've managed to keep in my calorie range, except one day I missed it by 1 calorie! lol I'm not to concerned about that one.

Not sure what my goal for June will be...

Terry, Heather - way to stick to it.

I'm at the beach, chillin' at the moment. Going to get up early and run in the morning.

Sunset Beach, NC...very quiet.

Although I'm known to weigh myself upto 2 times per day, my "weighin" day is Wednesday. I find that weekends sabbotage a good thing ;o). For a busy family it's when we may get take out or go somewhere and even though I eat 'good for me' food, it's always got sodium.

I also take measurements on Wednesdays. Seems to be the best day to do it.

I just did my treadmill for 49 minutes. 553 calories & 5100 steps! Felt good.

As for calories I like to eat the same snacks every day and plan out 3 300ish calorie meals. If I don't plan for it I feel I can easily go over or under.

Better late than never I say. A lot can be accomplished in 4 days!

I thought I was down about 3 pounds since last Sunday, but I snuck another peek at the scale today, and well, right back where I was, I think I should change my weigh in day to wed instead of Sunday, I seem to always be lower on Wednesdays!?

I've been having trouble getting in my calorie count for the day lately, and it's not because I'm not eating! I just don't get it.

4 days to go in May and I'm just now responding? I didn't set May goals. My goal has been to just move forward! I have had a couple slip ups and hormone rages, but over all I've had a great May.

My goal for these 4 days is to do what it takes to secure the 180's by May 31. I was 189 when I got pregnant with my last baby....and well, that was almost 6 years ago.

Today I hit 35 lbs and I feel wonderful.

I will be sure to come up with goals for June!!

I had a few slip ups this week. Nothing major though. I had a dinner get together with my coworkers on Thursday and I was not overly cautious with what i ate. Since it was right after work, I skipped my workout, then friday I had dinner with a friend, skipping my work out once again. So I only got in 4 workouts this week, but I still managed to do all the minutes and burn all the calories I expected to for the week. I did however get in all of the bootcamp video workouts.
Other than dinner Thursday I've tracked all my food and stayed about midway through the calorie range.

Thank you, Joan for taking the time to tell me about the different beaches! Now that we sort of know what to expect from each, maybe my daughter will have an easier time deciding which she wants to visit.

Hi Pat - I like all of the beaches I go to.

In the spring, I go to Emerald Isle with the girls. I like Emerald Isle because it's near to Beaufort, which is an interesting historical town that has a beautiful waterfront and great restaurants. It's also close to Morehead City, which has good places to eat and an interesting historical society building. Also nearby is Swansboro, which has a really cute little historic district. So for the girls, there's shopping and dining choices. As fas as Emerald Isle itself goes, there are a lot of rental companies that you could use to find a house on the beach. There are also plenty of hotels on the Bogue Banks. From a fitness perspective, while you can walk on the beach there, I find it hard going as there is a definite slant to the sand, sometime steep. The drive to Emerald Isle isn't bad - mostly I-40, then NC 24, the NC 58. It takes maybe 2 and a half to 3 hours?

In the fall, I spend a very long weekend - 5 or 6 days (ha!) with a bunch of friends at Wrightsville Beach. It's a straight shot down I-40 basically so one of the closest to get to. There are lots of lodging choices including hotels and houses. Since it is close to Wilmington, it has lots of shopping and dining options. The walking on this beach to me is more challenging then Emerald Isle - a much steeper shoreline. However there is a wonderful loop the goes across the two access bridges in a circular path of around 2.5 miles, I guess. I like Wrightsville in the fall when it's not very crowded. I didn't like it much the one weekend I spent there in the summer -- too many people.

My favorite beach is Sunset Beach, NC, but it may be too far to go. You drive to Wilmington, then drive 45 minutes to an hour south towards the SC border. You veer off onto NC Rt 906, and cross a one-lane swinging bridge that opens hourly for boats to the island. It's very quiet. There are a few shops on the island, including one where you can get various basic groceries. No restaurants on the island, no real hotels. There's an inn on the bayside. The accomodations are all rental houses that off season rent nightly but during the season, it's weekly. So, there's no easy dining or shopping - you have to drive to North Myrtle Beach or Calabash for that. Calabash has a neat shop whose name escapes me at the moment. The thing I like best about Sunset is that it is extremely quiet and restful, and has the best beach walking. The island is now joined with Bird Island - was separated from Sunset by a inlet when I started visiting in the early 80s, but the storms have combined the two islands. Bird Island is a wildlife refuge and part of great beach (very flat) walking at low tide. I've also seen turtle tracks and there is an active turtle watch on Sunset Beach.

Good luck finding your favorite beach!

Joan, when you have time, please share your thoughts about the beaches--I know you have preferences. I want to go with my daughter in a few weeks and the only one I have been to is WAY FAR South!

Lots of beach trips in my future.

My goal for May was to keep up with the 5K Jogging Program. Yesterday I did Day 1 of Week 3 - jogged 2 miles. Did this on the treadmill and threw some hills in. I as amazed that the 2 miles weren't as hard to do as I thought they might be.

In planning for my future, I figure the week I'm at the beach - yup a week! - I will repeat the week before from the program. The beach week will be my first running every day of the program outside, and it will likely be more difficult than the treadmill.

Glad folks are posting over here. Heather - in addition to adding minutes, mix it up a little. That might get you some results that are more motivating for you. Hope you had a great walk yesterday evening. I was behind leaving work and since my parents arrive tomorrow, I had chores around the house to do.

Later all....

I am jealous of the beach trip!

I've decided to increase my cardio from 30 to 45 min 5 days a week. We'll see how that goes.

Still tracking my foods nicely. Yesterday I was shocked, I was high in calories and too low in fat. I did eat a lot of fruits and veggies though.

i've been an absent member of this team for quite some time and my goal is to be active in the spark community again. I spent this AM reintroducing myself to the site and re entering goals and such. I had met my goal last year but unfortunately regained 5 lbs over the past year. Looks like the Cary team is a happening place to be!

Hey ladies...I'm back from a weekend with the girls down at Emerald Isle! We had fun, I mostly made good food choices - not always but I am mostly maintaining. Had a very nice long walk on Saturday morning along the beach for more than 5 miles. And we were entertained on Saturday afternoon by watching the wedding that took places about 3 houses away. Had some good seafood. The huge rainstorm was on Friday night so we had a sunny Friday afternoon and a beautiful day on Saturday. It was a rainy ride back though.

Sorry I've been absent from check-ins lately, having a hard time sitting at computer lately. PT is going better, doing water aerobics in a cold pool is not nearly as exciting as doing it in the 92 degree pool at PT. Muscles behave differently in cold water--big surprise! Doing well on everything else though. Lost another 2.2 pounds to bring my total up to 21! Yea!

Heather--know what you mean about boring meals--I tend to make enough for several meals and eat the same thing for days at a time...but I'm continuing to lose.

I've kept up with all the fitness workouts this week. Although I continue to track my food daily, I'm not pre-planning which hasn't hurt, but often leads to boring meals.

I got on the treadmill again yesterday, I thought I would really hate it, but I put on my earphones and just walk away. Someone was on it went I went yesterday, so I decided to try 15 min on the stairclimber, OMG I hated it, won't do that again. I really want to try the elliptical but I don't know how to use it. The electronics don't come on for me. I think if I get on it and start moving it will come on? Maybe I'll try that today.

I snuck a weigh-in today, it's not official but I think I'm going to see some good results come this Sunday!

Diane, congrats on staying on track!

I'm still here and working hard on my goals ... just got too busy to post, so trying to catch up.

May 8-13:
* stayed in range for Calories, Sodium, Calcium, Fiber, Iron and Protein every day EXCEPT on Monday low on calories (only 1178 ... too busy to eat that day)

* Did my afternoon exercise every day EXCEPT Saturday ... but then made up the time on Tuesday. On Sunday, we walked the trail around Bond Lake. All 3 of us (and Hunter) really like that trail.

* Flossed every day. Even bought more Floss when I got groceries because I had used up all the free sample that my dentist gives out at check-ups.

I understand about being discouraged. I did a little bit of backsliding from November through February and gained back some of the weight I'd lost. And I'd stopped doing my strength training.

The most frustrating this was that my jeans started getting too tight and the smaller jeans were unwearable. That was not good. So in March I started back with the strength training and logging food more diligently. Now finally in May I'm able to get back into the smaller jeans.

Lesson learned - it takes time, so celebrate the small stuff.

Lesson learned - don't backslide consistently. Backslide occasionally and then get back on track!

Thank you for the encouraging words Joan. It's just so hard to know I'm working so hard at accomplishing something, and then I don't. I'm not giving up, but I know I have to stay extra focused. I just thought this bootcamp would help me more.

Since we didn't meet at the park tonight I jumped on the treadmill for 30 min.

I too hate flossing, mostly because I have bad gums and it hurts, solution, floss more, lol. My dentist as a child had a plaque up on the wall that said 'you don't have to floss all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep'. It's still there after all these years. But Diane that's a very wise and serious goal, flossing is part of a healthy lifestyle, so kudos to you for keeping at it!

I went to another pole dancing class tonight. It is sooo much fun, but boy was I dizzy afterwards. I may have to sign up for regular classes. I'd also like to start taking dance lessons at that Let's Dance studio by Harris Teeter on Harrison.

I've kept up with my challenge work outs the entire week!

I also stayed on the low end of my calorie range most of the week, not on purpose, my choice have just been really good I suppose, I feel like i haven't stopped eating!

I haven't had the flossing lecture in several years, maybe 10. I just live for positive reinforcement, so when they tell me that I floss beautifully it charges me up to floss more....

Go figure.... emoticon

Diane - I hate flossing too. Wonder why 'cause it doesn't really take that long. But even more than flossing I really, truly detest the "you need to floss daily" lecture.

Funny thing Diane, two days after you posted your goal about flossing, I was out at dinner with friends, and who did I see? My dentist.

I printed out my KFC free meal coupon from Oprah yesterady and plan to have it on the way home from dr tomorrow. Hope they will let me choose my sides, mashed potato without gravy and green beans would be my choice. Thanks Diana for looking up the cal counts for us!

Today was the first day I did not look forward to PT. My leg is so tender in several places still. Doing well on all other counts. Added flossing--since I eat at home alone, I have my floss right there so as soon as I finish eating, I can get the teeth cleaned too!

Y'all take care.

I should *never* have doubted you Diane! I forgot you're vigilant about measuring and tracking.

Sounds like KFC might be an okay option.

I printed out the Nutrition info on it ... that's how close we were to going. It says it has fewer calories, fewer fat grams and less sodium than the original recipe chicken.

Grilled Chicken:
Breast - 180 Calories - 440 Sodium - 35 Protein
Thigh - 140 Calories - 320 Sodium - 15 Protein
Wing - 80 Calories - 160 Sodium - 10 Protein
Drumstick - 70 Calories - 200 Sodium - 10 Protein

I guess it's not too bad. I'll have to try it the next time we're stuck with eating out. It's high in Protein too. :)

Somewhere I read that the grilled chicken at KFC also includes the skin. And the skin, I believe, is where there's a bunch of calories.

We decided NOT to go to KFC. Fast food is sometimes tempting on a family's busy schedule, when we're not all home at the same time to eat. But the crockpot works even better. Dinner is cooking now in the crockpot. DD and I will eat before going to a meeting at the library ... and DH can eat when he gets home from playing golf. I, especially, don't need the sodium of fast food with my HBP ... but it was tempting.

My original thought was surprise that Oprah was pushing fast food ... but then I realized it was the "grilled" chicken she was encouraging. The coupon was for 2 pieces of grilled chicken, 2 side dishes and a roll ... ALL FREE. Is it possible to convince America to eat healthy??????

Back to goals...

I am 3 days in a row within my calorie range. Hurrah!
I plan on running day 3 of week 2 of the Spark 5K Jogging Program today.
I also plan on strength exercises this evening.

Tomorrow will likely be a day off from cardio, except if I walk in the evening. Whether I walk or not will depend on whether we have thunderstorms.

Tomorrow is also a company outing to celebrate some recent work being completed. We are going bowling. I haven't done that in about 3 years and before that it had been 15 to 20 years.

Okay you KFC folks. Is there anything you really can eat at the KFC and stay on track? That's what I ask myself about Bojangles when I have the inclination. And most times, before I go there, I've researched the nutritional information. So I'm depending on you all to be good when you go, or as good as you can be. I do believe that you have to occasionally get that food you really, really like in order to get it out of your system.

It's about being consistent and moderate - or at least that's my take. So an occasional fast food visit is okay, as long as you are reasonable.

That written which KFC are we meeting at and when? emoticon

Doing well on all counts--PT today and one more fish meal--that makes 6 for the week. Planning to use my KFC coupon tomorrow which means watching sodium all the way around.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Another good day ... meeting all the goals! Although the free KFC was VERY tempting tonight, especially when I wasn't in the mood to cook dinner. But alas, the coupon wouldn't print out for me ... which was for the best. If the calories hadn't killed me, the sodium would have. So a gold star for today! emoticon

You guys are all doing great!!! I am gonna try going to the pool today and just tough it out. Moving my joints without the impact has to be better than not moving at all. Fish meals 5 and 6 scheduled today.

Wow, that WAS interesting weather--especially the part about funnel sightings at Hwy 1 and Cary Pkwy and then Crossroads Mall--that's my neck of the woods---literally! Luckily everything went just to the north of me. Hope everyone is safe with no damage!

Three fish meals so far this week, staying good on sodium. PT is getting more strenuous--possibly doing to much too fast. That's why I have been up since 2 a.m. --too much pain to sleep.

Blessings,
Pat

I met all 3 goals again today. I walked on the treadmill this afternoon since the weather was so bad. It's pretty freaky when the TV zooms in with street names and you live within the area. I miss the Midwestern basement when the TV reported said for those living in the zoomed in area to take cover now. Later we heard Cary Fire Dept spotted a tornado on the ground 5 miles from our house. That's too close for comfort for me.

Joan, thanks for the copperhead warning. It's something to think about that when Hunter's out searching for a cottontail he might find copperhead instead. We'll keep our eyes open for that.

I decided not to go to the library this evening. The weather is too interesting for an outing.

So, I'll find something else quiet to do as I listen to WRAL talk about the weather. I made an exception and turned the TV on to see what's coming through in the way of storms.

Also, stayed in my calorie range for today, assuming I don't eat anything more. That's a 2 day streak!

Just stopping by to say that I ran/jogged 1 mile today per the plan for Day2/Week2 of the 8-week Spark program to run a 3K in 8 weeks time.

I'm hoping for a quiet evening that includes a trip to the library to pay fines and find more things to read.

Lizzie that's what were here for! I think the biggest thing I've learned is that you don't have to make a work out a whole 30 min or hour at once, break it up into 10 min segments, how far is your mailbox from the front door, jog to it and back, do you have stairs take a run up and down them a few times. Little things to add up!

I accomplished day 2 of my boot camp!

Hey Diane - good for you. And Pat - good for you for seeing the doctor and raising issues.

Had a good day.
- stayed in the calorie range
- walked with two Cary Sparkers this evening - Heather and Terry - and then had an adventure involving a dog bitten by a copperhead and a hysterical girl. I think it will have a happy ending. If you walk your dog in Bond Park, please be aware that there are sometimes copperheads in the trails and watch where your dog goes to "root around." - did Day 1 of Week 2 (decided to start with week 2 since I can run/jog a mile) of the program to get me to be able to jog a 5k eventually. See www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness

- ran into a friend after my adventure and went out for grilled chicken and a salad, and still stayed in the calorie range.
- The plan for the morning is to get up with the birds at 5:30AM and do my strength training

I'm off to a good start ... for the first 4 days in May

* I have kept Calories, Sodium, Calcium, Fiber, Iron and Protein all in range for all 4 days.

* I lifted weights on Fri (1st) and today (4th). We went to a walk outside with Hunter on Sat and Sun (2+3)

* I flossed my teeth 3 out of the 4 days.
I hope the month keeps up this way! emoticon

Already I am having to alter my first goal--I cannot do the water aerobics on off days--I am still paying for last week--have a dr appt Friday to discuss why my joints are "on fire".

But I have one fish meal down for the week, and will eat more than one more--I have done 7 two weeks ago and 6 last week, and in those 2 weeks I have lost 4.8 pounds, so I will be committed to that goal for the next while.

Conquering the sodium thing is becoming easier. Especially since I don't eat out (except that one time last friday at the grocery store) and I have stopped buying things high in sodium.

Hope everyone is off to a grand start this month!

Silly me, I started the thread, but did not post a goal.

Again this month I'm going to attempt to stay in my calorie range (1570 to 1920).

Am also going to concentrate on getting back to running so will follow the program for those who can already run a half mile that's discussed in "Spark your way to a 5K." Since I can run 1 mile, I'm startig with week 2, and may do it twice. For week 2, I jog/run 1 mile two days this week and 1.5 mile on my third session this week.

Oh no, I'm not feeling very goal oriented today. I haven't kept up with my workouts the last few days although my diet has been relatively okay. I guess I should get back in the swing of things. I need to get my wedding dress altered by the end of May, so I'd like to be closer to my wedding day goal by then. eeek!

I'm disappointed I didn't do very well with my goals in April, I thought they were simple, straight forward, and easily attainable. I hadn't really thought about my goals for May.

I joined the Sweatsuit to Swimsuit team today and I think that will give me the push in the right direction.
My only goal is to keep up with that program and do the workouts and challenges each day.
I'll still continue with my food tracking of course but that has been the easy part for me so far.

This is a great thread. Here's my goals for May ... along with keeping up with the other parts of this lifestyle change as well.

1. Have Sodium, Calcium, Fiber, Iron and Protein fall in the recommended range while keeping calories low as well. Iron and Protein are the new ones that I'm mainly working on.

2. Keep up with the Afternoon workout, in addition to normal Morning workout. On Mon-Wed-Fri I go to the Y to lift weights for strength training. On the other 4 days I try to take a walk outside or on the treadmill if the weather isn't cooperating.

3. The newest one is trying to get in the habit of flossing every day. I had my dental checkup and promised my dental hygienist that I would add this to Other Goals on SP to add it as part of my new healthy lifestyle. I really hate doing this, so it's a big challenge for me.

Joan--thank you so much for getting this thread started! I had intended to, but it's been a long day and I am just now getting back to the computer.

My short term goals for May are:

1. Keep doing PT exercises or water aerobics on non-PT days except Sunday

2. Continue to eat at least 2 fish meals a week

3. Keep sodium below 2300mg every day and to keep it below 1800mg at least 4 days a week.

Blessings,
Pat
