Hi everyone! I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted in here! It has been a hard two weeks. A lot of car riding and bad eating, minimal exercise, and a 3 pound weight gain, and only 1 gone as of today...I was in Atlanta this past weekend, and the 'free wireless' at the hotel would not work, grrrr. No food tracking, no fitness tracking, and more streaks broken. But I'm back, and on track! I've got another pole dancing class this Friday, a 5k on Sat, busy day Sunday, and walking on Monday with Terry!

You ladies have been so good! Keep up the great work :)

Joan, I wish I could walk along, too. I was making such good progress toward that "mile", before this leg thing. Am hoping PT will kick in and start getting better soon--right now I have more and wider-spread pain than when I started. Go figure. I am looking forward to the meet-up on Saturday, though.

Blessings,
Pat

Had a great walk at Bond Park yesterday with Terry and Jeannie. Pat - I wish you could manage it.

Today I ran on the treadmill at work and finished up with a session on the elliptical. Getting more running sessions in April was a goal, and I have done 5 so far, one more than planned.

I poked around the house today to see how I could "mark" the picnic table for the meet up on Saturday. I will have a bright orange pail like a little kid would tote around at the beach and a copy of "Our State" magazine.

Will post this info over in the meet up thread and ask Heather to send it out in email to the team.

Looking forward to Saturday. Terry - have a safe trip to Maryland. Eat a small portion of scrapple for me!

Terry - I'm with you - there is no way I would open my windows. I'm on daily allergy meds and I want the filter system in my AC to do its job.

Plus in ancient history in NC when I first moved here and could not afford AC, and didn't have the allergic reaction, I opened windows and spent way too much time dusting yellow/green pollen off of everything inside the house.

Yeah Joan on the strength training! That's awesome!!!

Pat, you are a brave brave woman with windows open! I'm still a wimp and that pollen is awful for my son. I'm not bad - eyes itchy and runny nose but my poor 7 yr. old son is miserable and on daily med. I kick on the furnace fan and come 85* outside temp the upstairs air has to come on if we're up there. Our house heats up like a campfire. Come 90* the mainfloor & basement air has to be turned on. Usually don't have to use it til May/June though. Hoping this is a short wave.

Heather, I'll see you next Monday!

Terry

I agree with you on the weekend. I walked in the MS-Walk on Saturday morning. I usually do 5 miles, but between the heat and the pollen and an unusually bad night's sleep I only did 3 miles. And I slept for about 2 hours on Saturday afternoon. I think it was a combination of pollen and a fitful Friday night.

My only outings on Sunday were to church and then back to Raleigh again to church for band practice. I should have gone to bed early last night, but puttered around until 10:30. Will definitely go to bed early tonight!

Yea! Joan, for getting in your 9th strength training--you'll make your goal of 10 for sure!

I'm with you on the pollen thing--the dirt in my patio garden is covered with a green film, not to mention every outdoor surface.

What a blah weekend I had--only left the house to go to church. Saturday I threw open all the windows and enjoyed the breeze billowing the curtains--till the temp hit 80---but in the evening when the air cooled down, I let the house fill up with cool air and then shut the windows. Sunday I didn't open any windows and the temp stayed okay with just the ceiling fans. Hope this isn't a foretaste of a record-setting August!

Heather--hope your weekend was good. Travel safely!

Hey...Just stopping by to say that I did strength training session number 9 on Sunday.

I am ready for pollen season to END! Even with allergy meds I'm not an entirely happy camper.

Hi, Joan--I'm hanging in there as best I can--really tired from PT and sore!! No pain, no gain, I guess. Doing fair on nutrition--staying under calories and salt, but probably not eating the best--really short on protein the past couple days. Changing that tomorrow.

Ready for spring weather to return--it's too early to be this hot.

Is Heather out of town this weekend? Pat - hope things are going well for you. Sounds like you have lots of challenges. Good for you for hanging in there and persevering.

Did the MS-Walk today, but oh so hot. And I didn't sleep well last night. I think the house was too warm. I like it colder at night than it was. So I only did the 3 miler and I've had a long nap this afternoon.

Here's to a good Sunday.

As for the sleeping without the tv--I am doing much better and have only been waking for bathroom breaks a couple times a night instead of 5 or 6, however I am feeling a little short of breath and my weight is creeping up a couple pounds (on less than 1300 cal a day--so that tells me I am retaining more water since I am getting less walking in. This CHF thing is very tricky.

I thought I was doing well on my sodium, keeping it under 2300 mg a day, except one day I went over by 24 mg, but yesterday at my diabetes seminar, my doc cut me back to 1500 mg--not set in stone but a number to shoot for--that is reallllly hard to do. That means absolutely no pre-pkg'd food, no condiments, no seasoning mixes--they all have salt added, no canned foods, hard to do on a consistent basis.

I did add the multi-vitamin at doc's direction, and am meeting with nutritionist next month to get insight on eating more nutritiously on limited calories--I never hit my fiber goal. And that is important for diabetics. Helps slow the absorption of carbs to keep blood sugar from spiking.

And the fish goal I added mid-month--I ate 7 the first week and lost 3 pounds. I've eaten 6 this week, but the water thing is keeping my weight loss from showing up. However on the scales at the dr. yesterday, I had lost 6 pounds since Apr 8. Probably more accurate than my scales at home.

So, I am plodding along, slightly impatient that weight loss is coming so slowly and that my body isn't cooperating with attempts to push it harder. PT is on-going, but I am waiting for it to be less painful. All things in due time, I suppose.

Hope all is going well for the rest of you!

Pat

Blessings,
Pat

Okay, it's way too quiet over here in this thread.

So, for my goals this month I have to say that for goal number 1, I have been fairly inconsistent. I've had an overwhelming interest in chocolate lately. I even made home made chocolate pudding yesterday and ate two servings. But today, I tracked it and everything else I ate, and am in under the limit. The goal is to be consistent, and I've been a bit inconsistent this last week or so.

However, on the strength training side, I am at 7 sessions so far this month, and the alarm is set for 5:30 tomorrow morning, which should get in session 8. Then I believe I can manage two more sessions after that to reach my goal. I will have to be intentional at least one morning next week to get up at 5:30.

As for the running goal, I ran/walked today. The reason for the goal is the annual family beach trip in June where my best source of cardio is running each morning. The more I can do in terms of distance the better. I have achieved my 4 session this month. I need to add additional session in May to be ready for June.

That's all for now. What is everyone else up to??

Joan, it sounds like you have been busy and you are doing very well on your goals--particularly getting outside and walking/jogging. I have been missing you here, though--particularly with Heather out of town. Hope she has good news when she gets back. And hope she is de-stressing!

Have a great week, and don't forget us here in Cary!

Wow - lots of action over here at the moment. I've been distracted and haven't participated.

Welcome Terry!

Good job Pat on the pot luck. They can be a real challenge for sure. Sounds like you did great.

I hope Heather is having a good time on her out of town weekend. I miss her not being here.

I posted this about my goals for April on another team where we have a similar thread -

1 - moderately successful on the 'stay in the calorie range' goal. I'll actually make it today. I would say I'm around 75% on that one.
2 - I've done 6 sessions of strength training so far this month and that's more than halfway to my goal of 10.
3 - I've been jogging I believe 3 times. I may jog tomorrow since I burned a lot of calories hiking today over in Umstead Park. I think we walked between 5 and 6 miles.

Hi everyone--hope you are having a wildly successful weekend--I am.

Major hurdle crossed today. Pot luck fellowship at church today--I am new to that church and I did not know it was happening. I almost didn't stay, but several ladies invited me and I acquiesced. I am so glad I did. Not only did I have a great time getting to know 9 wonderful ladies, but I navigated the buffet and did not feel deprived in the slightest. I had a bite--literally, of chicken salad, 1/4 of a Krab salad on whole wheat sandwich, a tablespoon--literally, of 3-bean salad, but I think it was made "diet" because it was NOT swimming in oil and sugar--a little slice of cheese and 4 wheat thins, plus grapes for dessert. When I got home I charted as best I could, and even allowing for some "under calculation" due to hidden ingredients, I came in between 200 and 250 calories. Granted, it was not the most nutritious meal I could have had, but I don't think I did badly.

This is the first time since I started SparkPeople that I didn't make my own meal. And I succeeded!

YEA!!!

Blessings,
Pat

Hi ladies. I'm brand new on here, not even sure what I'm doing! My name is Terry and my April goal is to lose 5 lbs. I'm down 2-3 so far (it fluctuates). I also have committed to 6 days of cardio, 2 days of strength. I've been successful so far. No more yoyos for me, this is it.

The good news is that I have slept better the past couple nights and the inflammation in my knee is subsiding with rest.

I started taking multi-vitamins and although all the literature says it takes a month or more for the effects to be felt, I do believe I am feeling better nourished this week--is it the vitamins? Is it the 7 fish meals? Who knows, but I am glad to be feeling better!

Hope you are all doing well and having a wildly successful weekend!

Ok, emoticon At noon today, I had my 6th fish meal, and because that went so well, I ate another for dinner tonite, just for good measure. I have lost a pound since Sunday and perhaps I will lose more by next Sunday!

Today was evaluation for PT & water therapy. OUCHY!! Think its gonna get worse before it gets better.

Hope everyone is doing well and having a successful week!

so to kind of revisit my goals for this month, I didn't get to the 5 lb loss, and I attribute that to the fact that I haven't kept to an exercise routine.--goal not met

but even though I've had some tough days, I've managed to work it out and think more positively, and my food tracker has never been so active!

I can confirm that you can turn pages with gloves on. That's what I did Easter morning - it was cold!

Pat - I just uploaded one picture from Easter morning, me pulling on gloves and some of the band members. We range in age from 11 to early 70s.

Joan--I have a whole new respect for what goes into putting on a performance. While I was never a band leader, or even a band member, I was a band MOM for a number of years and I understand the anticipation waiting for your group to "be on the same page!" It sounds like a very moving service.

I went to a new church, since I am sort of "in the market" for a new church home. They put on a 90 minute choral program that started with a soprano soloist singing "were you there" from the foyer into a darkened sanctuary with only a spotlight on the altar cross. It was very haunting and echo-y--it really set the tone. And watching the handbell ensemble turning pages with their gloves, I was thankful there were no page errors.

Anyway, I am off to a good start this week. Hope everyone else is as well.

Blessings,
Pat

Pat -

I think you get a different perspective on a worship service when you are involved in "pulling it off." I am one of four leaders of our chuch brass band. We had 45 band members on Sunday morning and at some point during the service 14 of them were under my leadership.

We start our service at the top of a hill in Oakwood Cemetery. And we conclude our service at our burial ground - which we call God's Acre on account of God harvesting his people. The band accompanies all of the hymn singing. Many of these hymns would be unfamiliar - they're part of our tradition - but we did sing two verses of "Jesus Christ is Risen Today." Anyway, while the congregation is moving from the starting location to the ending location during the service, the band divides into three roughly equal groups. Band 1 stays with the congregation walking behind them as they make their way to our God's Acre. Occasionally they stop and play so that the other two bands - Band 2 (my band) and Band 3 - can make their moves.

Band 2 and Band 3 go ahead of the congregation, but stay a reasonable distance apart from each other. And as the congregation is moving we play antiphonally - that is, Band 2 plays the first phrase of the hymn and Band 3 answers. So while we get into position before the congregation sets out, Band 1 plays while we, well it's not exactly a sprint while carrying a tuba, but while we in Bands 2 and 3 make our way to where we'll play from. When the processional to God's Acre is finished, the entire band is reunited and we conclude our service.

It's an amazing experience to be walking through the cemetery, thinking of God's harvest, remembering loved ones who have gone before and hearing music echoing around you. I remember that from having attended a very large version of this same service in Old Salem in Winston-Salem years ago.

When you're a band leader, you're not really "in the moment" because you are worried about keeping your group together and whether they are on the right page in the music book. And when you play the first phrase of a hymn there's a momemt of panic followed by sheer relief when your answering band plays the proper right phrase back.

But to answer your question, it was a wonderful morning - beautiful in the cemetery and a bit cold in the wind.

Heather, thank you for the good ideas--I did get outside a while yesterday and got all my plants potted and watered in. I think part of the psychology of being inside is that it has been so windy and even when it is warm, it sounds cold because the wind whistles in around the door and it sounds like winter!

Anyway, read my blog--I got into a new size today!!! YEA!!!

New goal for this week--I can't wait till may to implement it. Thinking W-A-Y back to my old WeightWatchers days, when I lost the best, I was eating 6 fish meals a week. I'm gonna try that this week and see if I can get the scales to budge. Tuna for lunch today, so that's one meal down, 6 to go!

Joan, tell us about your sunrise service--being outside in the sunlight with the dogwoods in bloom--how glorious.

Hope y'all (yes, I am from Texas until 3 years ago) have a great weekend!

Blessings,
Pat

aww, Pat, I'm sorry you are having a hard time. Even if you're not able to get out and walk how about just taking a chair out in the yard and sitting for a little bit, maybe read a few chapters of a book? The warm air and sunshine may help a little.
I've heard that if you are inside too much that can also effect your sleep cycles. I know the more time I spend outside the more tired I am at night.
My mother suffered with leg pain for almost 15 years, so I understand what you are going through.
Not sure if dairy has an negative effects on you late in the evening but maybe low sodium crackers and cheese could help fill the calorie need, or even an apple with maybe some peanut butter on it?

You're doing a fantastic job and I know you'll get through this! Hope you have a wonderful Easter!

Joan I hope the sunrise service went well!

I'm off the visit my mom and brother in Wilson.

I had my weigh in, down 1.5 pounds for a total of 2.5 for the month, not exactly the 5 I was hoping for by the 16th. Oh well, I'll get there :-)

Keep your head up and smile!

Joan, wish I were up for the sunrise service--you'll have to tell me what hymns you played--I love the Easter hymns. And Oakwood is such a beautiful, peaceful place.

Morning all and Happy Easter.

I'm about to head out to the sunrise service.

Heather - you don't have to be perfect in following your eating plan. The important thing is to be consistent over time. So if you're off one day in some category then compensate the next day or days. You're doing great.

Pat - sorry to hear you are under the weather. It sounds like you're down a bit and the pain and the off and on sleep can't help. But it does sound like you have a plan. Hang on for Tuesday. I wanted also to say that I loved your last two blogs. What amazing progress and change you have made!

Cheers,
Joan

Hi! I'm struggling a little lately--staying on target with food and water, although I haven't felt much like cooking this week, but leg pain has kept me from walking as much as I had been. Sleep has been difficult, probably because of the pain. I have been getting a couple hours, then awake several hours, then more sleep when I am too tired to stay awake.

Just holding on waiting for it to be Tuesday for my dr appt. I need to get out of the house--I hate it when I am just living like a hermit and not going outside and talking to people.

I've got another 125 calories charted to eat today, trying to decide whether I am going to or not. If I don't I will be barely at my minimum calorie number. Hard to eat just to satisfy a chart, especially this late.

I was thinking probably noonish for the farmers market, not too early and not too late. I'll need to figure my schedule out a little more but we definitely get a message out to the team. Even if it's just the 3 of us who go it'll be worth it.

I exceeded my fitness minutes and calories burned this week! I don't think I've ever done that. I don't expect that it will stay that way so I'm not going to adjust my calorie intake just yet. I think I've had enough flubs this week to cover the 'extra' calories burned.

Even though I've tracked my food everyday, I haven't really been following my pre-planned meals. Still staying within ranges though. My concern is that I'm not eating the best choices to actually lose weight. I do eat all whole grains and lots of fruits and veggies though.

Hey Heather - once you figure out when and where we'll meet at the Farmer's Market, I'll see about showing up.

The group of friends is great. We started eating breakfast together on Saturdays "officially" back in September 1986. All of the young ladies who were not born at that point or a few months old at that point, and who later attended in strollers and car seats are now college age or a little bit older. It's pretty amazing. We're a bunch of church friends and we're multigenerational, though the younger set doesn't join us as much now that they are off at college.

By the way, regarding goals of the month -

1. I'm doing okay with the calories, but near the top of the range mostly.
2. I ran again today - 2.3 miles with some walking, all on the treadmill for a total of 3.7 miles.
3. I've done strength training 3 times this week, so I have 7 sessions to go to make my goal.

Scale shows I'm down a pound. I'm not actually "rabid" about losing weight - think I posted that before, but I'd like to drop at least 5 more pounds from where I am and a couple more after that would be a bonus.

I think I'm good for the farmer's market on the 9th of May. I may not be able to keep up on a hike, but I am certainly willing to meet everyone and do what I can!

Don't know if you read today's Daily Spark--an hour's hike on uneven terrain burns 400 Calories!!!

Hi Michelle! Welcome to the team :-)

Joan, you mentioned the farmer's market and I thought it would be a productive way to get together with the team. I don't go often enough and committing myself to it with others would just be an easy way to do it. I was thinking sometime in early May. My mom wants to come visit me and go too. I was thinking maybe the 9th which is Mother's Day weekend.
I certainly understand your plans Joan, that's amazing that you have such a great group of friends to make a regular meeting and keep it going for 20 years!

Since I will be gone the next two weekends a lot of what I'd like to do as a group will be in May. I've had several people interested in a hiking get together.

I'm booked on Saturday the 25th all morning - MS Walk - and I have probable conflicts in May - potentially the last three weekends (not necessarily out of town, but things on the calendar), but I am up for this.

Hi everyone - I'm Michelle and I've been tracking my food and exercise on SP since September of last year. I really like the website but haven't been very active on the message boards. I thought now would be a good time to connect with my fellow Cary people :) So far I've lost around 16 pounds but haven't lost much since Christmas. I'm grateful that i haven't gained anything back but I've been lacking motivation and focus. Just trying to take it one day at a time.
Heather - I'd love to go to the farmers market some time. I've been meaning to go for a while but haven't. I may even be able to go for a little bit this Saturday. Just let me know.

Michelle

I always take my scooter to the farmer's market, at least I did up till now. But I would definitely be interested in car-pooling. However, due to doctor expenses this month, I do not have the money to go right how. I would definitely be interested in doing that in May, though.

Blessings,
Pat

Heather, I know you'll be disappointed in me on this, but I'm not that interested in doing that. I have a routine involving the State Farmer's Market that includes a long standing breakfast date - of more than 20 years - each Saturday morning. So, carpooling really isn't an option. Our breakfast group meets not far from the Farmer's Market, so I just zip over very early on Saturdays.

Wow, Farmer Pat!

I usually just plant several pots of basil and rely on the Farmer's market for wonderful tomatoes and other items. I'm just not that interested in working in the yard, but I do like fresh produce. I have a coworker who brings me some of his excess tomatoes. Each December in return he gets an order of high school band fruit.

Heather - glad you have your dog to walk with you and a neighbor who got you to go a bit further.

Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning, ladies! I went to the store yesterday and stocked back up on fresh fruit and veggies. Walmart in Holly Springs had the most gorgeous strawberries for $1.50. And I got tomato and pepper plants as well as herbs to plant in pots for the porch. Hope I have enough "crop" to share with you later this summer!

It lifts my spirits as well, Heather, to hear about how you are doing and the positive progress you are making. I'm glad you have your dog to take you for a walk and to give you unconditional lovin's. Pet therapy is the best! What breed is your dog? I miss my Lucy now that she is living in Texas with my daughter. I never wanted a German Shepherd, but she is a fantastic dog--it's all in how they are raised.

I hope you have a wonderfully successful day!

I am really having a hard time emotionally, not related to weight loss, oddly enough. It makes me happy coming in here and reading how great you ladies are doing, and I seem to have good things to report as well...

still tracking away my food and I got in a got 30ish min walk, I ran into a neighbor who had just gotten home from work and she needed to take her dog out too, I had almost finished my 1 mile walk and we probably walked another half mile or more together.

Here's a thought on cottage cheese. I used to eat it quite a lot - decent source of calcium, dontcha know, but the sodium, wow.

I'm a huge fan of Dannon nonfat plain yogurt. I had to work my way to being a huge fan because it's not particularly sweet and yogurt has a sort of sour thing going. However, mixing in thawed berries has made me a big fan of it. And many berries - especially blueberries - are nutrition giants.

Scale was down 1 pound this morning.
Forgot to enter at least one food on Monday and so was actually in my calorie range at 1607 and not below it. And yesterday I was close to the top just under 1900 calories with the goal to stay under 1920 calories.

Yep! It's not over till you quit trying!

I go to the doc this morning to see if he will adjust my diabetes meds since I am eating better and my blood sugars are stable and pretty low. That med I am on is not conducive to weight loss. We'll see. Scales are still stuck even though I am eating about 1000 less calories a day than my body is supposed to need just to maintain. Before diabetes I would have been dropping weight like crazy--don't know why I didn't do this 20 years ago. Yes, I do, I was an emotional eater in a very emotional time of my life.

Ladies, I hope you both have successful days today.
Later...

Even after my flub on breakfast this morning I still managed to come in within range on everything. I also noticed the cottage cheese I ate (4oz) had 300 mg of sodium. Pat, thank you for pointing this out to me. Since I'm not a 'salt' person I never really thought about it.

In an effort to be more positive I've been reading more in the motivation area, I came across a proverb that basically sums up my life, but gave me a reminder that there's no reason to not push a long; "fall down seven times, get up eight"

Hi, Joan. Thanks for asking about my sleeping. I am actually having less middle-of-the-night problems--which is when I usually flip on the TV and watch for an hour or more before falling back to sleep. Making a concerted effort to stay awake in the evening so when I go to sleep, it isn't dragging myself off the couch where I've been asleep for a few hours and finding myself unable to get back to sleep.

It has been a hard adjustment to living alone, but I am getting there.

Have a great day.

Morning Heather and Pat,

I was just below in my calories for yesterday - 1527 or so and the low end of the range is 1570. So even though the Spark nutrition tool barked at me for not eating enough, I made my other nutrition goals and heaven knows I've been in the high end lately. By the way, no fears of me not eating enough as a regular thing. I like to eat too much for that!

Heather - I know what you mean about the sodium. I'm diligent about staying away from prepared food for the most part. The convenience foods - like Lean Cusine which I keep on hand for a convenient fall back - are almost always full of sodium. The Lean Cuisines I buy - and eat maybe once or twice a month - are around 24% to 26% of the daily allotment. So I mostly try to eat food I prepare and the most 'dangerous' thing from a sodium perspective is likely canned tomatoes. So, glad you are keeping an eye on sodium and are already a label reader.

Pat - hope the sleeping is going well.

Cheers,
Joan

Heather--my biggest shockers have been that milk has something like 120 mg and the frozen chicken breasts I bought at Lowe's have 380 mg of sodium! When I sauteed the chicken without any added seasoning, I thought it was going to taste bland, but it tasted like I had salted it--then the two Tbsp of BBQ sauce I put on it had another 380 mg. That's ridiculous!

Chicken hotdogs used to be my budget lunch protein a couple times a week, but at 760 mg of sodium each, I doubt I'll ever be tempted to eat them again, although the deli sliced turkey weighs in at a hefty 460 mg.

Ok, I'm off my soap box. I promise.

Ok, so final track on sodium today 2983. WHAT? I have no idea where all that is coming from. I've always been conscience of sodium in prepackaged foods, and cringe when I see 1090mg in one serving of anything. I guess I'll have to pay more attention.

Heather you are doing great! Don't let little things (or big ones) ruin your day. I don't know whether you are religious, but when things like that creep into my thoughts, I just hand them off to the Lord and ask him to deal with the negativity so I can stay focused on Him.

I also have a cache of positive thinking quotes that I read through every once in a while to remind me that happiness is a state of mind that I choose for myself.

Oh, the sodium is the worst. I am in the "clean out the freezer" mode this week, so I am having a hard time staying under the sodium some days--like today, I was almost 400 over!

Let's just keep hanging in there--we aren't perfect, but we can keep trying anyway!

Hugs, Pat

I'm really having a hard time staying positive lately, I don't know what exactly it is, I am constantly reminding myself to stop being negative.

I didn't get up early enough for a walk this morning, but I did get in a mile walk after work, and I've got some strength training planned this evening too.

I'm getting better with the food tracker too, I've always used it but now i'm getting better at adding everything!

And wow Pat, you were right about the sodium, I added that to my tracker and,WOW, I came in just under the recommendation yesterday which I think is 2300mg, which to me seems really high.

Heather - I really liked the inches I lost around the neck. It was odd, but cool, and my face looking thinner was something I really liked as well. Who'd had thought it? Somewhere I read noted that the weight that came on last goes on first, so maybe that is why hips and waist are harder to slim down.

Fantastic, Liz! Keep charting that food--it'll make you aware of what you are eating. Let us know how it is going--I'll bet you can lose those three pounds before your shower!

That's a good point, I'm not a big fan of salt to start with so I rarely cook with it and it's a rare day to see me salt my food after it's cooked, but I never thought about how much is in foods that you wouldn't think was there. I'll start tracking that as well.

I do measure myself as well, no lost inches in the waist, only a half from my hips, but the most surprising was an inch from my thighs and an inch from my neck! I've noticed my neck doesn't look as full as it use to but I thought it was because of the way my hair was hanging around it.

Pat - actually I didn't sleep well last night! I hadn't done strength exercises in a while, and I was stiff. And because I'm a cheapskate, I won't turn the AC on yet even though upstairs was a bit warm at the end of the day.

Heather - I have noticed what Pat says about the sodium, so I track that in my nutritional info to make sure I keep it under control. I don't have high blood pressure or anything like that, but I notice that too much salt makes you retain fluid and that keeps the weight up on the scale.

The measurement stuff is a good idea too. Gives you a life if measurements are going down while the scale is steady.

Heather, do you keep track of your measurements? You can chart them on your weight page--and you can add other measurements you want to track. I have been amazed to lose inches when the scales were stuck.

Also, watch your salt--you can add it to things to track on your nutrition page. When I started keeping track of how much salt I was eating in things that I didn't even know contained salt, the scales moved!

You are doing so well--it has been great to see your enthusiasm increase! I am glad you decided to become our team leader!

I find myself with that same dilemma most days. Do I blow my calorie intake to get the extra calcium? Sometimes I do.

Weigh-in was today, only down .5 lb, better than up I suppose. I know it needs to be slow and steady, but it get frustrating to only see .5 lb when it's estimated up to 2 lbs a week. Just means I need to exercise more.

I'm going to start my days with a brisk walk with the dog before I get ready, she'll be happier too.

Joan, you were a busy lady today! I think the choices you made for wine and calcium were worth it--there are many days you come in under--way under your calories. It does some good to fool our bodies once in a while, so they don't hang onto fat thinking we are going to starve. Bet you slept well last night!

Blessings,
Pat

About to go upstairs and start some cleaning in the bedrooms - yup, I know it's about 9pm. Finished calculating my calories and I'm 52 calories over today, but I was under yesterday by a bit more than that. So that's not too bad. I could have come in under, but I wanted to hit my calcium intake - and I wanted that glass of red wine with dinner.

Got in two walks to day for 5.2 miles and finally finished my taxes and a bunch of chores I haven't been able to get to with being out of town quite a bit lately. So I consider this a pretty successful day.

My boyfriend took me to Nikko's for Valentines day. For the life of me I can't remember what I had but it was yummy! I love mussels too, but I'm very picky about my seafood, I don't trust anything, other than shrimp, away from the coast.

I did make some applesauce muffins for breakfast, I plan to have them ready for on the go next week. I'm telling you Joan, you are psychic!

Haven't tried the place on Glenwood or any of the Carrabba's around here. I have had them at Biaggi's. They're on the appetizer menu, but they make a great dinner. Have also enjoyed them at Mangiano's over at Southpoint.

Fantastic, Joan. And olive oil is the "good" fat, so even if you went over in calories, at least it wasn't a bad fat that did it!

I love eating at Greek restaurants--they have so may things that are "good for you". I love the salads! And the mussels!

Just got through estimating dinner at Nikkos Taverna last night and came up with 1,759 calories for the day. I have no good way of estimating any added fat like olive oil that was in the meal, so since the top of the calorie range is 1920, that leaves me about 160 calories from the top, which hopefully will absorb the hidden stuff. Maybe...or maybe not. But close.

Thanks guys. Glad to be back. I'm out here today to enter in breakfast. It's good to know that even if I cave and have popcorn at the movies (I know- really bad for you) I will at least be accountable for recording it and will then be less likely to have it the next time. Thanks for the warm welcome and looking forward to participating often. Cathy

Welcome back Cathy! I do remember seeing you post here in the past. It would be fun to get this team going agin. I think I remember you're a Bond Park dog walker on occasion. I bet you and I have passed each other without even knowing we were both on Spark.

Pat - don't be in awe of my fitness stuff. In truth I've been an athlete type all of my life - played 7 & 8th grade basketball and volleyball in high school and intercollegiate volleyball. I just let circumstances get in the way of being healthy in my 40s, so when I finally got back into doing the right stuff I had a good basis to work from.

Heather - good for you for trying pole dancing. Dancing scares me as I don't know left from right without thinking about it. Picure the mess I create at square dances!
emoticon

Moe's was a challenge. Last night my friends and I ate at Nikkos Taverna over in the shopping center sort of near Morrisville along Davis Drive where the Harris Teeter is. It was awesome. I haven't yet begun to estimate what I ate. I suspect I'm over. However, I did have the salmon and lots of vegetables, but we ordered three appetizers to share.

Just finished strength training - one of my focus points for this month. So that's one session down and 9 to go.

See ya'll later.

Hi, Cathy! Glad you are back at SP and glad you joined us on our monthly challenge. We are using this thread as a means to accountability and staying on track. And we are very good at encouraging, supporting, and giving each other kudos--something we all need on this journey to better health. We hope you will pop in often (we all try to do daily) and let us know how things are going, even if they are not going well. A little positive re-inforcement from someone in the same boat always feels good.

BTW, Hunter is gorgeous--I love goldens too.

Hugs, Pat

Hi guys. I haven't been on sparkpeople in forever. Just decided to check in - saw I had mail - read the Cary sparkers first and here I am. You are a wonderful group of encouraging women! Way to stay positive. I was doing so well for several months then went to Michigan for 2 weeks to visit family (no exercise plus lots of food). Came back and got a cold (another week off of exercise). And now am trying to recover from throwing my back out doing yard work.

Anyway, I want to get back into some sort of control so I'm going to begin tracking my food everyday. This is my goal for April. You guys are doing great exercising, and encouraging one another. Glad I found you.

I'd love to do it on a regular basis. The class I took was just a 'teaser' class, there will be about 1 a month that I'm going to try to attend. They offer 4 week classes to progress through different levels but it's $135 for each 4 week class and it's only once a week. These teasers are only $15.

Wow, Heather, that's supposed to be a good workout--let us know how that goes.

Joan, you blow me out of the water--I was feeling good for making it 1/4 mile on the treadmill and doing upper body strength---What can I say. You're doing great!

I do feel more rested today for having slept better. And I am doing well on my food, although I am not sure what I'll have for dinner. I wanna go out, but I won't.

Take care.

I worked out on the treadmill at the fitness center at work just now. Covered just over 3.6 miles and 2 of them were jogging -- half mile jog, then walk to recover followed by enough cool down to have a 50 minute workout!

So, I've got one of my jogging sessions complete this month.

I go girl! emoticon

Hi! I was having a blue day yesterday--rain, bad news, poor-me syndrome. I'm better today. I went to the gym and did some strength training--I know I am going to be sore tomorrow, but I need to build some muscles! I got my walking in yesterday and did some treadmill today, but TM seems much harder than just walking, perhaps because I cannot stand perfectly straight so I have to hold on. Working on it. Diet is doing well. And, Joan, I slept the whole night without the TV. YEA!!!!!!

Heather,

Have fun in St. Louis and a safe trip. Hope your boyfriend does well!

I had to meet someone from my college's fundraising office late yesterday afternoon and from there go to a brass practice session - I play lower brass in a small group. Anyway, as a result, I ate at Moe's, but my estimates are that I came in under 1900 calories, so that's two days in a row staying in my calorie range.

Two of us are taking a friend out for her birthday tonight, but we're going to eat Greek, so I should be able to find plenty of healthy choices.

No strength training yet this month. That's on the agenda for Saturday. I may run this afternoon instead of elliptical. We'll see if treadmills are free when I get up to the fitness center.

Thank you ladies for all of your positivity! That certainly keeps me going!

I've had a little bit more positive thinking day. Most of this is personal life stuff unrelated to weightloss and my goal to be healthier, but you ladies have helped me with changing what i'm thinking about and turning that to something I did good today.

I've tracked my food, and did some strength training and stretching today.

My trip to St. Louis is for fun. That is if I still go (personal life issues). My boyfriend drag races his motorcycle and this will be the first race of the 2009 season. I do tons of walking all day on Friday and Saturday, and it depends on how well he does on Sunday. Thursday will be the hard day because we are driving out there. So if I go MIA for a week, don't worry! The next weekend we'll be in Atlanta.

Heather--again, I second what Joan said. Celebrate every little success--it all adds up! You are doing great and you will do even better as the weight comes off and you become more fit.

Joan and I are POSITIVE you can do this! We are proud of you. Keep pushing--the harder it seems, the more worthwhile it is to persist. And get some sun in your life--spend some time playing with your dog--that's sure to raise your spirits.

Hugs,
Pat

"positivity was not my friend today"

That really spoke to me Heather. I've been doing this Spark thing for over 2 years now. The first year was really to get to a weight where I would "look good in the pictures from my 50th birthday." After that I found myself with changed habits and a way of living that allowed me to get through a very stressful end of last year and to mostly stay on track.

One side effect of Spark is that I find myself being positive most of the time and truthfully cheerful/happy most of the time. I think a lot has to do with being healthy and physically feeling good. In a way, that is one of the biggest surprises of this journey.

So good for you Heather on the 5 minute spin & the stretching. And a word of advice from one of the "old ladies" in this thread with you - look for somethign to celebrate every day.

- you walked
- you stretched
- you've lost about 10% of what you plan on losing
- you've got me and Pat behind you cheering you on

As Tigger would say -- Ta Ta For Now (TTFN)

Thanks for the encouragement!

I've tracked my food today, and I took the dog for a brisk 5 min spin around the parking area, will do the same tonight then do some stretching.

Heather, I second everything Joan said. You might be losing inches even if your scale doesn't drop a pound. I keep telling my kids I won't care if I weigh 200 pounds, as long as I can wear a size 8!!!

Today I did well, right on target with calories, sodium and walking. I am so sleepy, hope I can translate that into a good night's sleep--without having to turn on the TV.

Keep up the good work!

Pat, I did think it was Freudian. But it did make me smile!

For my calorie goal, I'm just under today - 1916.

Heather - hope you have a good trip, no matter what it is. Remember on your trip that even though you don't have the routine of home, you can still work on Spark things. You can
- drink your water. Water is great because it helps carry the weight away.
- find opportunities to walk. If you're staying in a hotel, then look for the fitness center or take the elevator to a floor lower than you are on and walk up.
- make good food decisions. You don't have to eat everything served to you. And you could consider ordering from the appetizer menu to get smaller portions.

While I'm still typing, Heather, I applaud you for that 5 pound goal, but please don't be discouraged if you don't make it before you leave. If you did all the right stuff - stayed in your calorie range and exercised and drank you water - and yet didn't drop the 5 pounds, you still were successful.

Good luck to both of you - Pat & Heather - on your April goals.

Go Team!

Yes, Joan, that's what I meant, but I actually probably have a better chance of accomplishing the way it is written--Freudian slip???

I am so proud of me, I have pushed my morning walk to about .3 mile--albeit with a couple stops along the way to catch my breath, but that's so much better than when I started last month, when I could barely make it to the mailbox.

Heather, I didn't know you are taking a trip! Is it for fun or business?

Success to all of us on our goals!!

Pat

My April goals:

1. to lose 5 pounds by 4/16 (day I leave for St. Louis).
2. Stay positive

3. continue to track my foods daily

4. increase my fitness level, whether that's a 10 min a day walk, or a 30 min cardio, or a strenght training...I will do something daily.

So let's see....I have re-evaluated my weight loss goal. I'm maybe 7 pounds above where I'd like to be and my clothes fit just fine. So I set a goal to drop the 7 pounds by the end of August and let the tools on Spark calculate my calorie range. The range is like 1570 to 1920, which may sound like a lot, but I am very active burning in excess of 2500 calories a week doing cardio. I also strength train.

So this month -
1. Stay in my calorie range 6 days a week. Try to stay under the top number so if I go over one day, the average will be in the range for a 7 day period.

2. Add some running to my cardio - say one day a week. I already work out for cardio 6 days a week usually, occasionally 5 days.

3. Strength train enough to get 10 sessions completed in the month of April.

No fooling!

Last month, three of us set our own goals and checked in daily for accountability, encouragement, and support. We each picked areas where we need to improve and by the end of the month, we had all improved and some of our goals are now habits we can carry forward.

In April I am going to continue working on my sleep habits--specifically sleeping with the TV on, keeping my sodium below the RDA 2300 mg, and after my dr appt on the 6th, I am adding a multi-vitamin.

So, tell us what your short term goals for April are!

Blessings,
Pat
