The 27th would be great! ahhhh, scrapple. I can smell it now. I actually went thru detox when I moved to WA (LOL) so when my parents came out to see me they brought a whole suitcase. So funny. My hubby (Mr. California)calls it floor sweepings. :o) Now to save calories I just get a small piece when I go "home" because it's a special treat and good memories of childhood.

Eastern Shore is sooo much nicer than So. Md. I go home now and it's so po-dunk (if that's a word). I mean driving to a grocery store - you better not forget your list as it's a 10-15 minute drive!!!. I always loved northern & eastern Md. So. is growing but not at the rate of everything else. :o) I LOVE the convenience here in Cary!

Terry - I went to Washington College in Maryland on the Eastern Shore. I'm not particularly familiar with Southern Maryland, but I do love blue crab and scrapple.

Mayhaps I will see you on Monday the 27th at Bond Park.

Born and raised in southern Maryland. I left when I was 18 to go to college (with a beau) in WA. Then I met my husband, had kids and moved back to this coast so our kids would know their 'family'. I LOVE being close to home and my sisters are both there as well.

I would love info on the beach - we've got a family of 5 and have a difficult time finding somewhere that will house all of us (legally) ;o).
Thanks!!

I have definite opinions on NC beaches as well which I'd be happy to share.

Have fun in Maryland! I sometimes go up to the Baltimore area to visit my sister and occasionally make a trip across the Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore to visit at my college as well.

Are you from Maryland?

Thank you so much. We heard that Cary (the triangle) is great for family. I'm just pleased with the events available, and can't wait to explore more parks, etc. We've yet to get to the beach - THIS YEAR - as I will finally feel good in a swimsuit! :o)))

I will not be here May 2nd for Bond Park :-(. I will be at My parents 45th surprise party in Maryland. They are awesome and set such a wonderful example of patience & commitment. Thanks for the invite though.

Hi Terry - I'm not a native, but I have been here about 30 years. I have a good handle on parks for hiking in the area. Umstead is at the north end of Harrison Avenue. You drive past Sam's Club and cross over I-40 and keep going straight.

We are planning a meet-up at Bond Park - there's a thread on this - on Saturday May 2nd at 11:30AM. I'll be there since I seem to be organizing. I have lots of ideas about different and interesting places to see in NC.

Terry--you have moved to a wonderful area for outdoors activities with your family. Check out this website:

There's a lot more information and maps on-line. Enough to keep your family busy for years!

My family enjoys the American Tobacco Trail, 26 or so miles of paved and unpaved areas, and the nice 2-mile paved trail around a lake at the Apex Community Park off Laura Duncan and hwy 64. www.apexnc.org/depts/parks/facilitie

Enjoy this beautiful weather and explore this wonderful area of the country you are now living in!

You all sound native to the area with your lake this and trail that. We moved here from Seattle a year and a half ago. We've found Bond Park, but what are the other great (clean, no mud for the kids please), hikes to take? I found Umstead once when I missed and turn and my gps had me do a u-turn, but honestly can't remember. So it's off Harrison? Past Sam's and after the highway entrance there? I'd like to take my family to a new place each week before the heat comes in. We aren't acclimated (and not interested emoticon ).

Thanks!
Terry

Joan, I don't know about here in NC, but in Texas, its turtles that get the hatchlings. Sad, but I guess its the natural food chain.

Oh, and ReadingGal, when you get ready for a 5 or 6 miler, there are great trails over at Umstead State Park. It's at the north end of Harrison Avenue and there is another entrance off of US-70 west of Crabtree Mall. I've walked the trails - and they are real trails, not paved - over there for years and it is also a great place.

Very cool ReadingGal. I walked there yesterday as well, but at an unusual time for me - about 1pm is when we started. We usually go at 8am.

There's an unlovely odor to the lake this time of year, but don't worry, it passes. I think it has to do with all the vegetation 'fermenting' in the lake.

We walked around Lake Pine for the first time today! That is a beautiful walk!! We did find the entrance to Apex Community Park off of Laura Duncan Road. It's funny how many times I've driven by that and didn't know what was there.

I entered the trail in the shared Fitness Maps. I came up with the 2 miles route, just like the signs indicated. So if anyone wants to add this to their fitness tracker, you can find it under Raleigh.

I think we've seen three years of cygnets hatching. The first year there were I believe more than 5, but there must be some predator there, because only one survived to maturity. Other hatchings have been smaller though.

We also see several blue heron frequently at Lake Pine and I have seen bluebirds.

Just post if you have questions about the area. Seems I am the old timer in living here. Been in North Carolina almost 30 years living in Raleigh first and Cary since 1989. I'm full of info...some even tell me I'm "full of it!"

Thanks so much for your reply. I'll have to look for the main entrance on Laura Duncan. I drive by it on Lake Pine Road on my way to Kroger's. We just moved here a year ago so still finding out where things are. I'm even more excited about walking this trail now ... I love baby goslings, ducklings and cygnets (how amazing).

Hi Readinggal & welcome to the team. I don't know that this ever took off, but to answer your questions about the lake. Yes, the trail goes all the way around. There's a couple of hills to get your heart rate up. The length is just over 2 miles.

I'm not sure if you drive by this park on Lake Pine Road or on Laura Duncan Road, but just so you know there's a lot more parking off of Laura Duncan Road. The main entrance is off of Laura Duncan between US-65 and Old Apex Road. If you go in there and drive straight ahead, you'll eventually come around a bend and see tennis courts on your right. Keep going to the parking area beyond the courts - you'll see a large picnic shelter. There's a path that runs from the parking lot, past the shelter to the trail. Now is a good time to start walking there, since soon you should begin to see goslings and ducklings and if we are lucky some cygnets. There are a pair of swans nesting there and we can hope.

I'm new to this group. This sounds like a fantastic idea to me! Are you guys still doing this? Is anyone interested in doing this, now that the weather is warmer? I see this trail every week when I get groceries and want to walk it. Does it go clear around the lake? Anyone know how long (miles) it is?

sorry guys, I wrote that so long ago and didn't any responses so I didn't pursue it. If you're still interested we can still do it. Lake pine is between Rt 64 and Cary parkway off Lake Pine Drive. We could start this Saturday 2/14. We can meet at the picnic table to the right of the parking lot. Say at 11am since it's still cold in the mornings? Reply if you're still interested. emoticon

There are 2 entrances; I take the one between Hwy 64 (Kroger's, McDonald's shopping center) and Rex Wellness center on Lake Pine Dr. There's a small parking lot. Turn left if coming off Hwy 64.

I will that idea in mind since it's not far from me. Right this minute, I have the flu and I'm worn out just walking up my stairs! It's very weird!

I am interested in meeting others in the area for a Sat am walk. I will have either a stroller or a baby in a carrier, so no running for me-- but that doesn't mean I care if you run. Anyone else interested?
