I think adding "bursts" will help out quite a bit. It will get your heart rate up. You can also try multi-tasking to break that plateau. Use 1-3 pound weights and do punches and curls while you are walking at a slower pace. I saw that in Fitness magazine in the January issue. You can check out some other routines there are www.fitnessmagzine.com

I'm not quite ready to endure any real amount of running, but I do enjoy adding a few seconds in here and there during my walks. I think thats probably a good way to work up to it. I do need to change something, these last few pouns are not coming off and I am losing and gaining the same few pounds. I really should check out that couch to 5k program and may take a look at that my next day off work. Have a gret day. Peggi

Good morning Yardwalker. I run outside. A bit tough in Michigan right now, but doable. I have to go get some traction things for my shoes for tonights run. I have a treadmill and have found I really don't like running inside. I thought it would be a great idea. I do use it to walk on light or off days though as well as my eliptical. I actually started out walking and had read an article about adding a bit of running in here and there to get your heart rate up. When I did a couple of blocks every 1/4-1/2 mile the pounds started to move. Then I started to run more and read an article about doing a 5k. And here I am almost 7 months later training for a 1/2 marathon. Go figure. I never intended to run this much. It is like walking. It is my me time and I think, and zone out.

I would do what your body is comfortable with. You can check out the c25k, couch to 5k, program here and adapt it to what you want. 5k's can also be walked. There are tons of walkers too. Here is the rule with them. If you sign up to walk, you must walk. If you sign up to run, you can do both and many people do. I started doing them as motivators and mini goals. One per month to keep me on track.

Do you run outside or on a treadmill? I've been trying to run a tiny bit in between walking on the treadmill. Would like to work up to a real run i think, never did it before.

HI YW. We hibernated for the most part yesterday too. I got in a 6.5 mile run and then did breakfast, housework and laundry. Along with a couple of movies in between. It was a nice day.

Laura, I hope your hubby is doing okay. Glad too that no critters had gotten in this time, he may have had a problem helping you get them out. Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone. I'm looking forward to my day off. Yesterday was my 10 hour day. today, I just want to be home, but doubt its going to work out that way. When I do get a day to be here, I feel guilty if I don't go see my parents. And should do some shopping too I guess.

Well. It is a short story. Dorve 4 hours to Indianapolis for my husband to ride BMX. He crashed and sprained his foot and ankle so we got back in teh truck 1 hour after arrriving and drove home. No creatures and he is pretty much ok. Hobbling, but not broken thank God.

oh, how I envy you being home and working from there. I would love to be home all the time. It's strange but when I leave I'm always in a hurry to get back home. If I had a choice I would very seldom leave home. It's nice to know there are others out there who feel the same. Have a great night!

Peggi, I, too, am a real homebody now that we've moved into the woods of VT. Now that I work from my home office there'll sometimes be 5-6 days before I even venture out into town for shopping or a dump run. I'm happy as a clam if I can just go out onto the trails for my daily walks... and then tend to the greenery when the season is right.

LOL, guess everything has its price..you go away for a nice vacation and look what happens..and you live in the city too. Thats what surprises me the most. Could understand this more in the city..but those darn red squirrels sure are pesty everywhere I guess. I think I'd be afraid to leave for vacation. MY dh would probably have to drag me out of the house..course I like being home anyways, I'm really quite a homebody. Getting cold tonight, so especially nice being home.

We had a great vacation. Our neighbor picked up some of the mess before we got home and cleaned up the glass stuff that broke. We actually live smack in the city and it is those dratted red squirrels that we are getting. It fell down the chimney as usual. What is life without a bit of excitement I guess.

You poor thing, I cannot imagine even going through this once let alone as often as you have. You must be really out in the country? We have squirrels everywhere here but thankfully they have not gotten in the house. it is something we worry about though, and especially the red ones. Think they are the worst. did you at least have a nice vacation?

well, an update on squirrels. In much earlier post I described squirrels that had gotten into the house. It gets better. After returning from Mexico for a week we found we had another body living in the house. Yup. Squirrel. 3 cats chased it for 2 days. I do not need to describe what our house looked like. And I had so proudly cleaned it the day we left so we could just waltz in and not have to worry about it.

How sad this has to be for your entire family. My heart goes out to you. I am running into a few small road blocks with some fundraisers that I wanted to do. I put together a 50/50 drawing for the two stores yesterday, but then was told that I may need a small games of chance license and the Cancer Society was closed due to the holiday. I need to call them today to find out how to get one or what I need to do. this is sure keeping me busy.

OMG Margie, that sounds terrible! I thought Iwas freezing yesterday with 19..I'm to old for these really cold days anymore. What kind of ebay business do you have? that sounds so fascinating, something I wish I would have gotten into years ago. I'm starting a Relay for Life team and thats been keeping me busy. Not real busy yet, but just getting people and learning the ins and outs. Am looking forward to it, but not the reason behind it. My ex was just diagnosed with lung cancer. It's hit us all pretty hard. my kids live in Vegas, I'm in Pa. and the ex is alone in Arizona. We have stayed friends and its just really hard to deal with. I feel the need to do something and yet, there is nothing anyone can do.

Oh Margie, How nice it sounds to have the ice pond and the kids home skating. It just sounds like you painted a Christmas scene in my mind. It's very unusual here in that we still don't have snow and they are calling for a high in the 50's again today, tomorrow it cools down to the 40's with some rain. I wanted a nice outside walk yesterday while I was off, but with all the running I had to do it didn't happen and today I am back to work. Have a great day.

OMG! I just cannot even imagine coming home to this..if it ever happens I sure hope my hubby is here and not working the long screwey hours he normally works. I would not have a clue what to do or how to do it. But I'm sure I'd be chasing it with something! god knows what though!

Its not too bad. We learned after the second one to simply open a door and give them a little shove towards it. It is when the cats chase them that it gets bad. Our first one lived in the fireplace for 3 days before we figured it out. 4 people, 2 laundry baskets, 1 fishing net, 1 blanket, 1 pool que, 1 yard ornament and a good 3 stooges improv later we got it out. the second was a toughie. A very long story later, we thought he exited until a party 4 months later for nwe years when we had to drill a hole in the wall to run a cable line for our tv. Yup, we found him. 2 cans of air freshener later and some beer and we were able to go back down stairs. #3 destroyed the living room. We found plant shrapnel for months afterward. Scratches in the plaster walls and on the panes of glass in the windows. My dh came in the door to that barking noise they make. He was on point on the mantle and ready to make for the door. He parted dh like the red sea, lol.

Well, this is the 4th squirrel we have had. 2 were polite and 2 were not. This one destroyed the place, but was easy to out. A couple of pokes with a pool que and an open door did the trick. We are kind of getting good at it. We are a bit suprised that one got in. We took off the chimney cap, which was the problem before, so he must have been bored.

OMG I can't help it. I'm cracking up! Reminds me of a client of mine in FL who had a racoon get into her ranch office and they couldn't get it out for a week! His favorite trick was walking through the fireplace ashes and then walking around the house. Little racoon prints everywhere!

OH NO!!! What a mess to come home to! At least you kept your sense of humor... how did you actually get him out of the house?

I came home from a weeks vacation saturday night to fine out a squirrel had fallen down the chimney and was still in residence. The l'room was destroyed as well as the bathroom and kitchen since the cats chased it. What a mess. We evicted him after we downed a pizza.

With this warm weather our frozen ground has thawed, so it's giving me a chance to finish preparing an 8' x 3' bed for some asparagus plants I ordered for next spring. Since I work from home I can sneak out at lunchtime & do some digging and spreading of composte. Since my ground is mainly hard packed clay and rock, that ends up being some nice exercise.

Labs aren't really good at making friends with all of these animals are they?? LOL, they sure do try hard though. Both of our kids have labs and what wonderful animals they are. Not anything more lovable.

Today looking out from my home office window I saw 3 squirrels, a bunch of chickadees at my feeder and one very frustrated chocolate lab trying to make "friends" with all of them... lol
