Hi jelaineb, welcome to Birds and Blooms. I hear ya on the starlings. I donít have a vegetable garden but I hate how they devour all my bird seed and prevent the little birds from eating. House sparrows are another problem. I have so many; they line the fence in my backyard to wait their turn at the feeders.

Bluejays on the other hand, I donít mind so much because they rarely come to my yard. The only time I can get them is if I put out peanuts. Since I get so few, I actually enjoy seeing them.

Sounds like you have your hands full and your days packed with much to do. Enjoy your time here, this is a fun website.

Hi everyone...hope it's ok if I join this team.
I am 61 and have been farming all my life. I run a farm by myself now with seasonal paid help plus lots of help from grandkids. I am an organic gardener, very into green methods of farming, and take my produce to 2 farmers' markets each week plus have my produce in 4 local grocery stores. i raise several kinds of u pick berries, have an orchard of nuts and fruit, raise 4 kinds of grapes, and have livestock and small farm animals..my chickens are free range and I sell their eggs. I have 3 gardens...one is an experimental garden, where i am constantly trying new things...such as ground seaweed for fertilizer, or trying different kinds of composting or plants. I work very hard on this place, but find time each day to enjoy life. I have a creek running through my place, and love to take an hour or 2 or 3 and go swimming with the grandkids. I raise flowers ...lots of flowers, but except for my heirloom roses and some perennials and annuals for color, the majority are chosen because they are the best sellers. Right now, I'm selling glads, zinnias, and dahlias. Today, I started tilling up an area for the first of my fall plantings. Oh, and I love birds, except for bluejays and starlings...oh, how i detest starlings. I fight them every year over who will get to have the cherry crop...I don't kmind sharing, but those starlings would take the entire crop if I wasn't diligent...Enjoy the Lord's Day, tomorrow...Joy

Gee, I never heard of Menard's.......do they have a web page, I wonder, since they are a chain....I will check. I know I think I would like seasonal in a garden store, but only part time. LOL! We shall see.

HEY, Ginger, thanks for popping in; how was your TG by the way?

WOW! You really DID go by my house! I can walk to Carrabas..........not a short walk that, but it is possible. LOL!

I know it is confusing for folks traveling here from the south; you were on 275 if you got to Coney Island....not 75. LOL!

Well, sounds like you had a good trip regardless.

Hi Kat. We do have a couple of Menards here. They are just starting to enter our area. We are supposed to have one open close to us next spring as well. I had thought about applying in the garden center as well. I get tired of all the driving sometimes. I prefer to have weekends off though so I will have to really give it some thought.

We are supposed to have your snow moving in on the weekend as well as the cold temps. It is supposed to be 60 here in mid-Michigan today and tomorrow. It was 62 yesterday. 33 friday though. Everyone will have a cold by Sunday, lol. I put hubby on Cold-eze and cold meds this morning for his and got myself vitamin C to help prevent me from getting his. We leave for Mexico 10 12/9 and I refuse to be ill.

I drove past you a few times this summer on my way to/from Lexington. We even got lost one night after a couple glasses of wine. Who knew that going south on 75 we had to go 1 exit to get to Carrabba's but coming back north there were 2 exits. We found ourselves at the gate for the amusement park instead. I can't remember exactly where it was. We did find a cute little pub to ask directions at though.

Unfortunately we don't have your area. Our furthest south in Marion and Mansfield. I stopped at a few of the Cinci ones thought to check out the competition, lol. I like the supplier you have for the annuals. They are a great company and have merchandisers year round because they do the inside floral and plants as well.

I tend to plant pretty early sometimes. It is just so hard after a long winter not too. You can get away with it a bit more than me though. Jealous...

I am in the River region of Cincinnati area. I get bunches of kale, spinach, chard; usually these are open air. I have gotten their bagged romaine hearts. Not often tho; I usually get the openair ones; bunches of red romaine, or leaf lettuce.

I have found that while it appears eating closer to the earth is more expensive, over time, it really is not, bec. I also am eating LESS overall......and the cost savings come up in other areas too. So what I do, anyway, is cut the meat and add in vegetarian dishes; I have cut my cholesterol from 232 to 177 with lifestyle change alone. I feel good about that.

I won't need anything to lure me outside spring time! I will need something to keep me from trying to plant too early! LOL! I waited like a good girl this year, and my tomatoes are still turning red, altho I had to pull em off the vines way too early and let em finish in here.

I have left a lot for spring in my yard this year too. I like to have something to look forward to on those early days where the weather just begs you to go outside. We have had great eather for a week now and I have poked a bit in the yard. Not much. Just looking mostly.

I hope our plants look good at your store. Do you mind if I ask what area you are from? Have you ever tried the greens in the bulk containers from Meijer? I keep looking at them, but it makes me a bit nervous. Maybe I am wierd. I eat a lot of lettuce and spinach and it gets a bit expensive. I try to eat a variety of salad at 2 meals per day to take up space in my belly. It helps me to not overeat. Or if I do I know the greens are like Chinese food and I will feel better soon, lol.

How interesting! I love Meijers; used to shop Kroger but wow, Meijers has so much more in the way of produce, and of good quality so since I shop close to the origin, I go there; don't buy processed items much at all anymore.

You are supplying my area, then. :) I know what you mean when you talk about how hard it is to get to one's own yard with working, etc. I am no where near where I need to be for winter yet! I never am. LOL!
My fall yard work is often still left to do in the Spring.

Thanks for the welcome and kudos. I don't get to do as much design work as I would like. I stay very busy with my real job which is a merchandising coordinator for a perennial grower. We supply to Meijer and Home Depot in Michigan. We also ship, for Meijer, to part of Ohio and Kentucky. I have a large territory and that keeps me on the road a lot. I don't advertise my business. I do word of mouth and also maintain a few properties. It is extra mad money for plants. It is fun although it doesn't always leave me the time I want for my own yard. Kind of gets old pulling someone elses weeds while yours stack up. =)

Hello to YOU! And you look to be very very close to your maintenance level, so kudos to you!

I am envious of your business! LOL! But I am too old to have such a business and taking care of my yard takes allllllllll my free time anyway. It is a lot of work. I am self-taught in all I do....except for whatever anyone shares with me.

WELCOME!

Hi there and thanks to Gingerstardust for the invite. I am pretty much just a garden junkie. I have my own landscape design company and also work in the green industry. That part is just icing on the cake. I enjoy all types of gardening. I have more of a cottagey look in my back yard with a pond. There are a couple parts where you can see mulch so that my hubby is happy too, lol. The front is a bit more structured and formal.
