Happy Freedom weekend everyone! I have a robin story...

Friday morning I was trying to sleep from getting off work at 8am and having to return back at 3pm. (gotta love the holiday pay!!) A whole family of robins were making so much noise that I woke up early at noon. My partner went to investigate and we made the assumption that one of the neighborhood cats that runs loose must have gotten a bird.

Then Saturday I woke up and let my cats out in the backyard (they can only go out supervised because MY cats are NOT allowed to be hunters! emoticon )

One of my cats jumped down into our deeper window well, but then I think he got scared because he jumped right back out again. AND, when he did, the robins up in the trees flew down to the deck and started attacking him!!

So, I looked in the window well and sure enough, there was a baby robin. Maybe a neighborhood cat did try to get it and it flew into the well for safety and then was too tired to fly out. I got the bird out and then in a couple minutes it was gone.

And, the birdsongs in our backyard have returned to normal once again. I hope it survives and I get to hear it's manic robin song into the late evenings for years to come.

My husband is dying to get them but everything around here is protected unless they bother my dogs!Anything that lives and breathes is allowed to stay! {My husband is a hunter too! We had robins nesting in our maple tree this year. They really are good parents. There was always one around watching the nest and chasing away any impertinent squirrels!

We have mud martins that built a mud nest over our kitchen window several years ago and I won't let my DH knock it down because they come back every year and raise a little family. And, they eat lots of mesquitoes, so that's double duty. It's funny to watch our cats jump on the screen and try to get to them, but they can't and the birds know it 'cause it doesn't bother them in the least.

I found the smallest baby ever this afternoon. I was on a hike and noticed something small struggling to cross the walkway. As I got closer I realized it was a tiny toad! He was small enough to fit on my thumbnail with room left over! His hop took him almost an inch at a time! I picked him up for a closer look then put him in the grass on the far side of the walkway. He would have been eaten by something bigger. I hope he makes it! We need more toads to eat all these darn mosquitoes that are swarming around here!

I just love the robins too! I don't have ducks here in town no water for them to be in! I just took a picture not too long ago of a baby..I was about a foot away from him and the parents didn't come after me! I think they know I feed them..ha! And yes they do come to eat some seeds and drink the water..speaking of..I should check it!

A few years ago when my husband and I lived in a third floor apartment, we had a family of downy woodpeckers that would visit our suet feeders. You could always tell the babies because they were such awkward fliers!! One kept flying towards our screen door of our sliding glass door and would just sit there and look in on us and our cats! Yes, baby birds are one of the greatest things in nature!

years ago when i was raising my 1st batch of cockatiel babies the neighbor brought me a brown paper bag. when i looked inside there was a nest with 3 baby robins and they all had their little mouths open they were so hungry.
an evil cat had killed both parents. they ate nestling formula and when they were older i bought worms from a bait shop. i successfully raised and released them.
i just love baby birds so much!!

We couldn't figure out why our ChickaDees weren't around! Today I found out we have at least three families of chickies! They are soo cute! I caught one of the parents feeding the babies suet/seed mix. I thought they only ate seeds! Enjoy all of your little bird friends everyone!

Most bird parents watch their young for sometime after they fledge. We would always get birds in at the shelter or calls and we would tell people not to touch the baby but to watch and they would see it was being taken care of.They were so surprised.Birds are good parents. They can often be seen feeding koi.If you watch close the babies have bright colored mouths and it is a sign to the parents to bring on the food.
Enjoy your bird family

I have a robin family! It is so cute, I never knew Robins were such good Mothers. She has three babies that are as big as her and they follow her around on the ground in my yard and she still feeds them! Its like a family of Ducks! Has anyone ever seen this before? I thought that once a bird could fly that was it! I just love watching the birds, you learn something new everyday!
