I wish I was rural so I could see more..but there are probably more trees here than on a farm. I do live by the river and we go out there all the time. We do need to invest in some binoculars though.

We have at least one Northern Flicker that visits our backyard, what neat birds. I don't get to see them everyday like some of the other birds, so it is always a treat when I get to see one.

So glad everyone starting talking about writing down birds they saw. I used to do this all the time, and have gotten out of the habit. I will have to get back to it, I like looking back over all the birds that have been in the backyard. We have a lot of variety here in Indiana. This time of the year is a lot of fun because we are now getting summer birds, and migrating birds, and what is in the yard is different all the time.

I have a pair of flickers that hang out regularly in my backyard.

My father got me into bird watching when I was little and I started writing dates in my bird book although I haven't done it in a couple decades its fun to look at that book and remember good times with my father. My father has since passed away but I have his bird book (it is so used and has separated from the binder) and I frequently pull it out and see all of the dates he wrote in and sometimes where he saw the bird. It is one of my favorite keepsakes I also have his old binoculars that must weigh 5 pounds.

It is a lot of fun to keep track of dates, and places. We have a cabin in the Adirondack mountains and I keep track there as well. It's only 240 miles away but they have birds I'll never see at home. It is also fun to see when a bird might be just migrating through our area and is just making a pit stop at our feeders. My boys are older and they get bored with mom's hobby but my niece is almost 4 and she wants me to right down every robin or cowbird we see, I would be righting all day!!!

I had to look in my book to see what a Northern Flicker was. Going up in Idaho, we didn't have many different bird breeds. So when I moved to Tennessee 12 yrs ago. I had so much fun with all the colorful and musical birds. I put out feeders everywhere and would spend hrs watching them all. Now living in Fl. there's even more birds to learn about and see for the first time. I love birds...they are a gift from God to me. So I too wish I had started back then to right the date. I can do the yrs...they are all attached to some kind of change in my life.

I saw a bird that looked like a cross between a flicka and a robin
There were two of them and they had the striped breast like a thrasher and were very similar to song sparrows but bigger not as large as a robin or thrasher just slightly smaller
with a rounded tail
I have looked on the internet and I am sure they are some sort of finch or grosbeak maybe

we have a lot more birds with the added water features my husband has put into the yard

I love it when I see a new bird for the first time. When my Kids gave me my first feeder for mother's day about 10 years ago, my husband gave me a great bird book. Every time I see a new bird for the first time I have written the date in. I am amazed at how many birds different birds we have, and that new one keep coming. That's why I need so many feeders. emoticon
