Am definitely wasabi green with envy - I LOVE sushi, but DH can't stand it, so almost never get out for some. I'd invite myself along (yeah, pushy, pushy) except that this is the one Friday I've already committed to picking up grandkids from school and watching them for the evening. Hope dinner is yummy - please let me know when you plan on going again and I'd really like to make it as well.

Hiro Sushi - 90th st & Mtn View - stick to the shashimi!! no mayo/no rice/ no sauce etc

VERY little low sodium soy/w/wasabi!!
Generally asian food is VERY high in sodium because of the soy/ little bit of rice goes a long way -sushi rice is made a special way which adds to the calorie count Miso is almost pure sodium!!

If you can't deal with just raw fish - skip these restaurants

I'm definitely a carb lover, especially noodles. Wish I could find some Italian places that wouldn't kill me on the salt and cholesterol. This summer I've been mostly eating in with an emphasis on finding new and different main dish salad dishes or resorting to lean meat/fish kabobs with lots of veggies.

I think for sushi, it's typically the rolls (rice & sauces) that kill the calories and such. If you like sashimi -that's always a great alternative!
Agree with Noodles Ranch and Pita Jungle as well - I guess we all have great taste :)

There are a whole lot of worse options, it's just not as guilt-free as I once thought. I went to some web sites that give you nutritional info on restaurant meals and found typical sushi dinners ( A. 1/2 tuna roll, 1/2 spicy tina roll, 1/2 rainbow roll, 1 pc tuna, 1 pc yellowtail, 2 pcs salmon, 2 pcs eel; and B.Th 12 pcs assorted suchi, 1 order sashimi, 2 crab rolls) run just over 1000 calories each and have sodium counts guaranteed to boost your blood pressure. I still go out for sushi, but make it occasional treat rather than a go-to dinner I'll have on a regular basis.

I was just at Mekong this past weekend! I must say their produce section has improved quite a bit, as when they opened last year, the produce left a lot to be desired, but now they are actually quite nice. i agree with you that they have some of the cheapest produce in town.

I also like going to Lee Lee Supermarket on Warner and Dobson. That place is huge!! it's like Mekong on steriods. They have stuff from all over the globe. I highly recommend it.

Since they are both in close proximity to one another, I tend to hit both stores on the same trip (it's a bit of a drive), usually once a month.

Great minds think alike! Noodle Ranch has a cookbook of recipes used in the restaurant - after my second visit, I picked one up and now can make some of the less complicated dishes any time at home. There is a huge Asian market/grocery called Mekong Market at Dobson and Main (SW corner) that carries any possible ingredient you might need as well as some of the lowest prices I've found on fresh produce.

It's soooo hard finding restaurants that offer dishes that won't break the calorie, cholesterol, and/or sodium bank. Green and Pita Jungle are on my OK list as is Tottie's Asian Fusion at the SW corner of Thomas and Hayden. It features Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes - the Bun Tom is a noodle salad that is one of my regular dishes and they offer Tangerine Beef that isn't breaded and deep-fried, just sauteed in a really tasty sauce. They have a lot of veggie offerings and feature fresh veggetables and herbs - definitely recommended.

Hah! I've found the best food doesn't necessarily come in the fanciest packaging. Those family operations with grandma in the kitchen, the kids bussing tables, and recipes used for generations are my favorite places to go for real food at real prices.

I also like the Bamboo club on Shea and 101. They have what they call "Happiness hour", which includes Shrimp cocktail, Edamame, and Seared Ahi Tuna. All are cheap, $3-4 and low calorie, and they have a really nice patio with a fire pit too for those cold nights.

I like the food there too! I try to minimize the cream and cheese based dressings and sauces and concentrate on the grilled fish and chicken dishes with lots of veggies - generally we go there when I can splurge on calories/sodium a little.

Sounds like you've got a great list of restaurants that will custom tailor your selections to a healthier lifestyle - wish there were more of them! Thai food is one of our favorites, and we've found a new family ownded restaurant "La's Thai Cuisine" at the southeast corner of Hayden and McDowell. Fresh ingredients, incredible soups and salads, and lots of noodle dishes (my faves) make it easy to go back as often as I wish and get a completely different meal every time.

Believe it or not too, Yo Pauly's Pizza on Via Linda and 90ths street. He makes his bruschetta. We asked him to add cucumber, and it's called the "Garcia" bruschetta. Tell him to leave the butter off the garlic bread or I like to toast my lite bread and eat it there. Very good!

I like Shanghai Club on Shea and 101. Harry the owner will steam fish with green onion, steam chicken, basically will cook however you like. Add veggies, take away, he'll make it to order. He's a friend, and close to our house. Bamboo has a happy hour 101 & shea that includes edamame and tataki and some other lower fat appetizers that it's kind of fun to split and have a few.

emoticon Kris, China Lite is one of my "go to" restaurants as well. On those nights there's just no time or energy for cooking, I know I can get several healthy take-out options there. Do you belong to any gym or fitness center? Some members have said they'd like to find a fitness buddy for working out - also some get together for walking and/or hiking around town as well. If you're interested send out a post and hopefully schedules can be coordinated.

Hi all, just joined up today and am really excited about a site that actually has a "Scottsdale" group. I really enjoy meeting people around me that are losing weight! Anyway, in the corner of Albertson's shopping center (Hayden and Indian Bend) is China Lite; great food and most of their items are cooked with little or no oil! As an asian food freak I really love this place!

Malee's has been a favorite since they opened, but I stay away from Cheesecake Factory because of their signature desserts (I'm too good at rationalizing 'just one piece' when I'm at a restaurant). Another option is Tottie's Asian Fusion on the SW corner of Hayden & Thomas - dishes made with fresh ingredients and fewer fried/breaded offerings.

I know its not "techincally" in scottsdale, but a friend of mine who is vegetarian showed me this reseraunt named "Green" south of Roosevelt on Scottsdale Rd.

Hands down, BEST Kung Pow Beef ever. ((yeah, not real meat? how crazy is that!))

They make everything fresh, meaning its not boca/morning star frozen-type stuff. They have organic lemonades and teas and lots of variety to choose from!
(Parmisean Chicken Sandwhiches to Hotwings to Hummus)

Prices are generally in the range of 5 to 8 dollars per meal!

Give it a go, yo!

Pita House on First Ave. in downtown Scottsdale has an expanded menu with some fairly healthy options - owners are Lebanese and have some nice takes on Mediterranean fare. They've also put in a cute little shaded patio with misting system so it's not just take-out any more.

I think you're doing great! Think about it - you're both reducing calories to cut back fat and embarking on a rigorous exercise campaign to build/tone muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat (although fat takes up more room in the body). As that flab turns solid you'll lose inches before weight (try using your tape measure equally with the scale).

At the rate you stated, you'll lose about 5 lbs per month - in other words, in one year you'd be down 60 pounds! Remember, this isn't a diet where you deprive your body and drop weight fast just to regain it again (usually with interest) when you return to 'normal' eating. This is a lifestyle change and should stay with you permanently. I found that not only did I have to count calories, I used the pie chart at the bottom of the nutrition page to ensure I was getting a good balance of carbs, fats, and proteins - the body needs all three, and often we try to cut the fats too low and wind up with a sluggish metabolism.

Keep it up!!

The angel on my shoulder makes me think...10 calories = 1 minute at full speed on the treadmill. So it takes 7 minutes to work off my 7 chips. Then I start to think whether I really want those chips enough to run 7 minutes to cancel them out!

Sometimes, though, the devil wins out. Like today at lunch. I had too much bread because I was so hungry. Now, I have a biz dinner tonight and I'm going to be very careful. I have to listen to the angel more.

what helps me ration is just put so many in a bowl, and that it.. Don't take and hold the whole bag. Yesterday I just change my bowl to a smaller bowl. That way I don't feel deprived and I stop when it's empty.. Today I didn't even empty it. My weakness is chex mix with peanut m&m's. (I like sweet and salt) I'm done for the day and there are still some in the bowl. Success feels good!

You and me both - I LOVE chips, but can't ration them. Once I pick up the bag, it doesn't get put down until it's empty. Just as bad for me are those crispy fried wontons they serve in the baskets at Chinese restaurants - sweets I can live without, but give me good grease and salt any day!

Great idea about breaking up the chips. I usually set aside 7 chips (I figure 10 calories per chip). Then I use them as a scoop for the pico sauce, which is very low calorie!

A new Egyptian restaurant just opening in Papago Plaza (SW corner of Scottsdale Rd./McDowell) called The Nile Cafe. They've been in the Artisan District in downtown Phoenix for a few years and are now opening here. The food is all homemade - mediterranean/middle eastern with some unique variations. Delicious and healthy!

I've got several healthy options for those days when cooking is just not an option - Noodles Ranch on the SE corner of Scottsdale Rd/Thomas is a small family owned and operated Vietnamese restaurant featuring home-made sauces, salads, and springrolls and noodles which are steamed rather than fried. I particularly like their bun and soup options.

I'm always on the lookout for good restaurants, especially those that serve healthy food options. What is your favorite?

For Mexican, I like Los Olivos -- the Tapapo (sp) Salad is great. I leave off the cheese, and substitute charro beans for the chicken.
