Hi all. I'm new to the group & thought I'd introduce myself. My particular disability is that cancer in my leg caused me to need severe surgery several years ago, with reconstructive surgery that's left me with what I call my Frankenleg. No kidding, the more I move, the more inflammation I get. My fibula (not the shin bone, but the lower leg bone in the back) had 4 cm removed from it, where it attached to the knee, and was never reattached. So every step or ankle movement (and I have permanent foot drop) causes the bone to wobble around, basically banging on the muscles, nerves, and other "innards" in my leg! And yes, walking was always my favorite activity. I found out when I got my Fitbit that if I go over 3,000 steps in a day, that I'd pay for it later with pain & spasms. (Fitbit recommends you walk at least 10,000 steps each day.)

The lack of mobility, plus certain meds, has put about 20 more pounds on me, and now I've got diabetes!! That is not a family disease for me! So I'm doing a plant based diet (PBD) to try and reduce all the inflammation, fight the cancer, fight the diabetes, and get healthy again. So far so good.

I'm so glad there's a group like this, where we can uplift one another. It's hard enough to lose weight, but to do so when you have mobility issues is like running a marathon wearing a space suit! You're limited, easily exhausted, and watching others run laps around you. When you get discouraged and someone gives you what they mean as encouragement, but you realize is impossible for your condition, it kind of makes you sag inside. Our disabilities don't define us, but we definitely do have to work harder and smarter.

I'm working on energy, health, and wellness. The weight will come off in the process, but it's every decision I make in eating that will help me heal. And eventually I will pull in the exercise component, just looking for the right one.

Great to find yall here!

Hello, team! I just found this team and since I have limited mobility I thought it would be good to join. I have lymphedema in both legs and can't stand or walk very long. I was diagnosed with diabetes at the end of April. I have a lot of weight to lose. Approximately 150 lbs. I just need encouragement. I know together we can all lose weight and be healthier!

Hello!

I just found this group and I'm very grateful to be here. I have over a hundred pounds to lose and need knee replacement surgery times 2. I am just starting walking in my pool 3x a week and I'm hoping to build up to 5x a week. My Dr. wants me to lose weight before surgery and has said that I may even be able to avoid it if I lose enough weight. Growing up I was an athlete; I played soccer, swam and was on a row team. I was injured in 2004 and then found out I was pregnant and the weight just started packing on. My son is autistic and I homeschool, so I guess I just forgot about me but I want to be able to walk with him, to play with him and right now I need a riding cart just to do grocery shopping. I'm hoping to find some motivation here and maybe some people to help me stay focused. I don't overeat but I just don't move enough and it's definitely affecting my health in a negative way. I quit smoking and I still get out of breath just showering and drying off, to the point that my husband added a shower head to our tub so I could sit. I don't like the way I look or feel. I want this weight to be gone!

Good morning team:

I am just popping in. I haven't posted on this team for quite some time. I am going to try to be more diligent.

I am going to log my food starting today and then gradually add exercise, etc. as I go along. I lost a lot of weight about a year ago and have almost gained it all back.

I am not going to beat myself up about it and I need to remember my limitations.

I hope everyone has a good day.

I have never had my hips or knees replaced. I dont think they can do my knees though it would be great if they could. I have too much metal and damage in my legs i think for replacement. They said they couldnt do it at the time of the accident because i had nothing for the knees to be attached to As my bones were like gravel and all broken up.

Hi Cherri - lots of hospital drama. I have had a bunch of tests and more onFriday. They discovered I have an ovarian cyst with unusual characteristics. I am hoping it is not cancer. It seems like one thing after another but I am plodding along and trying to eat right. How are you doing?

Great news about daughter coming over :)

Oh yes, I eat for emotional reasons. I like food and I like to eat. I also like that warm content feeling when you eat until you are nearly too full - how you feel after a holiday meal (binge).

I have a lot of day to day pain due to injuries and cant take much pain medicines. Due to genetics, opiates dont give me pain relief (worse than taking a tic tac) but they make me sick especially gi sick. NSAIDs i am supposed to avoid for cardiac reasons. Aspirin not in regular doses due to anticoagulant effects. Tylenol less than 1 gram per day due to its toxicity on liver. So I use food and caffeine to help with the pain.

Now I am doing a lot more PT to help with the pain and implementing more life style changes. My personal trainer showed me how to sit and lay to decrease pain plus working on my walking.

Long answer - I know exactly what you mean.

Cherri you are doing fantastic! Almost 100 pounds gone!

My accidents wrecked my being healthy too. I am fighting to get it back.

I like food and portion control is a problem for me. Over the years what a real portion is has gotten away from me. I know in my head but my stomach and will power tell me something different.

I have to portion my meal out and put the rest of it away and log it before I eat it. Like tonight I bought a cookie from whole foods. When I logged dinner I am 25 calories over limit without the cookie. So I put the cookie back in fridge and then decided to eat half portion of the chicken roll. However I did not put the other half up but told myself i will put it up after I eat - the other half is in my tummy too.

So tonight I am 25 over but I did manage not to eat the cookie which would have added another 150 calories. It is baby steps.

Goldierose I loved your happy fall picture.I have a hard time with the what I should be eating.to be honest I was skinny till my accident .I was perpetually in motion and ate what I wanted now I seem to look at it and put on weight. My big problem is hot bread & butter ! Maybe I should talk to you instead of binge!

Hi GoldieRose :). Welcome!

Tonight I watched an episode of my 600 pound life to keep from binging.. It was an episode where the person struggling I relate to very much. Watching them eat a huge pile of food while telling themselves they are starving is something I would do.

The Dr makes a calculation for them when they go see him and after they tell him they are eating practically nothing. He said they should be 200 pounds maintained on the diet he gave them. Since they actually gained while at ~ 600 pounds that means they were eating > 3 times more than they were supposed to. He said you can lie to yourself and they can try to lie to him but even without his watching them eat he knows they were way over eating.

I keep trying to break back into the 270s and I seem stuck. I am also feeling sorry for myself and I am logging everything I eat so I can see my binge days. Tonight I ate 1383 calories and don't need anymore. I am within range for my carb, fat, and protein. However I really want some part tarts that I saw in the cabinet. I know if I open the foil pack I will eat both for 400 calories. That will put me over my daily limit, my carb limit, and I will be eating after 7 pm. I told myself if I still want them so bad I can have them for breakfast.

Normally I would eat them without thinking but the scale will not lie and my binging is making my diet healthy eating futile. I need something else to focus on and use for an emotional release. The 600 lb tv show stops me from mindlessly eating them but know I need to find something positive to put in their place.

That sounds like my first car accident but I was not nearly hurt as bad. It is especially bad when it could have been avoided if the other person paid attention.

I have had 4 total -

1. Was ~ 1997 I was stopped at a stop light waiting for it to go green and a tank of a 70s car (they last in Seattle) slammed me from behind going about 50 miles per hour. The guy said someone had parked in his place at the drum school by the road and he was looking to see who it was and forgot to turn or slow down. It tore through my Honda Civic trunk and back seat and the front of his car was on the back of my car seat pushing me into steering wheel. I ended up with whip lash and back problems but lucky to be alive. This was second worst.

2. Was 1998 just got a replacement car. Was driving in rain at dusk and the lady in front of me slammed on her breaks and I slammed on my brakes but the lady behind me wasn't paying attention and hit me and pushed me into lady in front. It damaged the Chevy Corsica but did not total it.

3. Was 1998 and I was mad as a wet hen. I just got the car back from the shop a couple of days and was heading home one evening. In Seattle there are big hills. The one by my house had a light at the bottom of it. So I was heading up the hill when a police car with lights started down the hill going the wrong way because his way was blocked by people waiting for the light. So I pulled over to the side of the road and stopped with several other cars. A huge truck comes barreling up the hill and nearly hits the police car head on but swerves to miss it and hits me on the side of the road. So it was back to PT for me with the car in the shop again. Also Geico said no more grey cars (the Honda and Corsica were grey and they said people can't see grey cars so they are hit the most. I got a blue Chevy Malibu in 2000 to replace the twice fixed Corsica).

4. This was the 2013 one. I had just went out for a minute to get a new coffee maker since I had been working on the house after Mom had to go into assisted living due to a fall that broke her ankle. Mom lived with me but was a bit of a hoarder though now she claims she has no idea who stacked up all the newspapers and other junk into piles. I cleaned out about 30 bags of just trash Mom had saved for crafting DIY recycling projects and felt I deserved some coffee while cleaning. Picked up the coffee maker which ended up being cubed with the car. Ordered some pizza and paid for it and was heading down to a bake shop to pick up a thank you dessert for my neighbor when a semi truck (under insured of course) lost control and fish tailed across two lanes of high way into on coming traffic going the other direction and hit me head on. Nearly died in that one and they had to airlift me out to the state trauma center.

I am hoping this is it for me. I ended up getting a red Subaru Outback. They have a steel ring and said in an accident the steering column retracts and doesn't come down on you).

I forgot to tell you Susan my accident was in 2004.I got hit by a senile old man in a truck , he tried to turn into his driveway through me , he hit the gas instead of the brake .He got out of the truck and said "Where did you come from?" I was stopped at a red light with a car in front of me and a police car behind me. My car was totalled. So was i!

It sounds like between the two of us we have kept the medical profession busy.I used to be 6'2" I lost 4 inches of height. You were tall too.I have an amazing physiotherapist but I have gone through some rough spots too.You are the first person I have ever met with more screws in their leg than me I have 18.
We will no doubt have things that we will understand that no one else can regarding our injuries. My steering column broke too.

Cheri they didn't replace my knees at the time because the said there was nothing to hook them too. Thus they healed but I have stiff knees. Essentially they used a long piece of metal like a flat rod and ran it from my thighs to knee on side of bone and screwed all the bone pieces to it with the ends all touching for each leg. The bones then grew back together to look like bones again but I have omg 30 or more screws in each leg in that area in a mishmash not orderly and lined up at all. My right leg is 1/2 inch shorter than the right and due to bone contraction I lost 2 inches in height am now 5'8".

I know I will feel better when I get the weight off. I lost 50 pounds in nursing home but have gained most of it back because I was not able to cook for ages and thus had to use pizza and Chinese delivery and once I was on walker and could drive I added drive through food. I tried with groceries delivered but gave up as I just could not cook and ended up ordering good anyway.

Today I am going to the grocery store to get a few items to cook so I am praying it goes better than it has in the past.

I am Trying to cook again and will have to see how it goes. It did hurt like heck trying to cook between originally, the legs, then back, and then gall bladder.

Omg, Cheri I am sorry to hear about your accident. It sounds as though it has been longer ago than mine. My car accident was in 2013 and I am still recovering. Picture is in my spark photos. Both my femurs were broken compound fractures with large amount of bone (4 to 5 inches or more) sticking through the skin and all over the car from the right one. My right knee was shattered and the left was fractured in 4 places.

Nearest I can tell the steering wheel broke and the wheel and column came downon my legs breaking everything then there was a slam forward. I am full of Rods and screws too. If you are okay with it I would like to learn from you about any learnings you have had dealing with it.

There are not many my surgeon said who came through it and lived and if lived kept their legs. I have found some items that have been omg useful for me and am always looking for more ways to get back on track and get more of my life back

I took care of Mom for 9 years and the month after I got her settled into assisted living is when the accident happened, followed by extra surgery a year later when a plate shifted so back in wheel chair, then my back dislocated 3 times, and finally the gall bladder. I have not been sble to get on top of my health and be healthy for a while as each time I think now I can focus and get it done something else happens.

I am hoping I can start again now. I am heading over to Home Depot to look at knee pads. I bought this omg massage/pt table from Amazon. It was about 170 which is way cheaper than pt tables plus it is portable so unlike pt tables it is not an elephant in the room. I have it set up in my dining soon to be exercise- health room. It can adjust height so I have it low to the floor in PT mode. I need it because I can't get up and down off the floor to do floor exercises that help my back. I can do yoga on it and even standing exercises. However, to really do the yoga I need something other than the pillow I am using on it for my knees. I am hoping the gel foam knee pads will give me the extra mobility to bring me closer to normal.

Hi HollyDDDD :)

I dont think I can have knee replacements. I am so full of metal from the car accident and they said at the time they could not replace my knees then because my bones were like gravel and no where to hook anything too. Now my bones are healed but I have rods and tons of screws so not sure if it is possible even now. I try to be gentle with my knees.

I use a rolling walker-my for balance and a wheelchair for longer distances. I am no longer able to make all my meals. Two other people in my family have medical restrictions.I have one cooking right occasionally; the other no. I have started looking around recipes.

Back again had to have emergency gall bladder surgery last Thursday. The gallstone was nearly the size of a golf ball, blocking the gall bladder, and the gall bladder was infected. Got it befor it spread to the pancrease. Went to the ER at first light and after the ultrasound they got me ready for surgery and out it came.

Eating tiny portions with no appetite. They said appetite would come back in a week.

Huge changes at work. I still have my job for now but tons of friends got laid off. Normally I eat when I am upset but when it hits a critical mass I just stop eating. So I am going to have to make sure I get enough calories each day until everything settles down. I need to be there for friends and not sick.

The surgery went well on my back though they said it would temporary. I am slowly trying to get back to working on my health. The last bit I have just been comforting myself and not stressing out.

I have a bunch of health things I am starting to work on - nothing too drastic after the strict diet fiasco. I will slowly list them and how it is going.

Hi everyone just wanted to drop in an introduce myself. My name is Barbara, I just joined this team today. I have been disabled for about 10 years now. I use a wheelchair if I am going to have to walk more than a few feet. I have COPD and am on oxygen 24/7. I also have a host of other medical problems but won't bore you with all that. I am married to my best friend and husband of 17 years today. I have 3 beautiful daughters who are all married and have given me 5 absolutely gorgeous grandchildren. I am looking for support and inspiration from people who understand the turmoils of trying to lose weight when you have obstacles like ours. I am working towards losing 140 pounds and increasing my quality of life.

You should get sent a spark message about people who friend you and you can go to their page and friend them back.
I have a spinal injury and have had one hip replaced and am waiting for the next one and have had both knees done but now they are worn out and they are going to do them again so I know what you mean my chair for the kitchen is on wheels so I can go to the fridge and pick out things I need from the pantry etc.

Hi :). Thanks MimawElizabeth and CheriRiddell!

! The restrictive diet is gone. It made me sick as a dog. I talked to the nephrologist and he said that as long as I lost weight by my 4 month cardiologist appt it should not matter how I do it.

So I have to figure out what I am going to do. I went back to my normal eating for a couple of weeks to get my gi tract back in semi order and now I need to take it slow and thoughtful.

I just ordered a chair from Amazon. It is for massage therapists and people who do skin treatments. It is saddle seat shaped with a lumbar back rest. It is supposed to be good for your back. I need something in the kitchen as I am not good for standing even short times and cooking. Thus all my drive through and delivery food. I need to be able to cook more.

Plus it will save me money to eat homemade food.

Edited. Did I mention I hate being in pain all the time because I do.
