Interesting article!

I agree that readers, as well as letter-writers, are a dying breed. We are full of "sound-bytes" and "insta-grams" and messages, but not as many real conversations or experiences anymore.

And don't get me started on the lack of vocabulary or correct grammar!

I think that people who read a lot do understand human nature a great deal. Whether they are the only ones that make good partners, is debatable. I see the topic angered quite a few people in the comments section of the original article.

Fortunately, I don't need to debate the subject, as my husband and I are both readers.

Laura - it speaks volumes that your husband, while not a reader himself, gives you the space you wish to enjoy your reading passion.

edited to add - I forgot to say that reading aloud is one of my all-time favourite activities. I feel a bit at a loss now because I have come to the end of the Harry Potter series with my now-16 year old daughter. After reading to my "children" (they are all adults/teens now) since they were infants, we have almost run out of things to read.

edited to add something else, lol - to me, the description about ending a good book was spot-on. I am always bittersweet when I finish a good book that I have enjoyed immensely. And I cannot pick up another book right away. It takes a few days to want to "delve in" once again like that.

Sharon, My earliest memories of my mother are of her taking me and my sisters to the library. I remember going from picture books to books with actual words to chapter books. I can tell you the first chapter book I ever read. Which by the way was the Black Stallion. I come from a family of readers. My hubby doesn't read but he humors me and doesn't get mad when I "ignore" him for a good book. LOL!

Laura, thank you for this article. I so agree with it. Reading is something I love to do. My Mum made me read. At first I thought it was a waste of time, then I found out what she told me was so true. That I could go any place in the world that I chose and I could be anything I want to be.

Reading has helped me understand about life, aging and so many other things. I do know that readers are much more expressive of feelings. Plus many of them are deeper thinking and much better at listening.

Having a teenagers, I find that many do not read. They text and do not talk. When they speak with me, I find that what they are thinking and what they verbally express are no way the same. It is both scary and sad to see how little they read or write., and how poorly they express themselves.

I know that loving to read brought my love for journaling, which is a wondrful journey in learning about yourself. I also find that I so love to have an actual book in my hand instead of a kindle book. Give me a book I loose track of time.

I tend to agree with the article. My DH and I met at a bookstore, and we continue reading and talking. I definitely feel that I have a greater understanding of others because of my reading. Being retired, I have more time to read, and I'm loving it.
