My advice for northerners is to shovel some snow!

Yesterday I shoveled for a few hours. I went out at 9 am, shoveled for 90 minutes, then came in and took care of the house. I went out again at 2 pm and shoveled for 2 hours. It was a tough work out, and I walked over 21,000 steps.

Today, I was worn out! I slept in and probably really needed it!

If you would like to walk with other people, I have two suggestions:

1) meetup.com - Search for hikes or walks, make a reservation, get to the place on time, walk and talk and have a good time with pleasant people. Some ask for $1.

2) ava.org - The Volksmarchers, America's Walking Club, and the one I talk about the most. It's designed for beginners. You walk 5k or 10k at your own pace. Come with your friends. Most walks welcome dogs, too. There are walks in all states and provinces. You can take trips and sightsee places you've always wanted to go to. Nice, friendly people would love to see you. $3 covers the map, markers, and insurance.

Tracking my steps really lets me know how much (or how little) I walk in a day.
With daylight savings in place, I'm struggling to get in all my steps.

Here's a site that's a lot of fun and FREE! Search for Walking 4 Fun. Choose a hike to do from the U.S. and Europe, oh, and Corsica, too. If you have a Fitbit or maybe another type of pedometer, W4F will read it; otherwise, you have to insert your steps manually. A photo of the trail appears every half mile.

I just finished virtually walking the 2,689.5 mile Pacific Crest Trail, one of the longest. It goes from Mexico to Canada and it's got some really tough areas which is why it's a very good idea to walk it virtually! Tomorrow I will start one much shorter, the Chesapeake and Ohio Trail.

Thanks DeeBee! I am finding that tracking my steps is very motivating. I used to go for long walks, now I have to get in my exercise in spits and spurts. A little here and there really does add up! I'm amazed at how many steps I can walk in a day!

JSTETSER, It CAN be confusing! Do this:

Go to the Spark Start Page. Look about halfway down the column on the right side called My Community Quick Links.
Scroll down to "Jump to a Spark Team"...scroll to 10K Steps a Day team and click on it. Click GO.

Then you get the 10K Steps a Day Team page. Scroll down to "Team Message Boards." Keep on scrolling (we do a lot of scrolling down) to "Team Challenges and Goals Forum." There you will find "September Personal Step Challenge."

And there you are! You will see my post right on top of yours!

I have seen Fitbits at Walgreens and Walmart. Probably many other places. You can order them on line, too, and maybe through Spark??? Amazon must carry them because they carry everything. Fitbit's customer service is the best ever, by the way. I've had a Zip for years, and if I have any problem whatsoever, customer service solves it.

JSTETSER, I like my Fitbit very much. I have the Zip, which is the smallest, most basic product they make. It is small and I wear it in my bra and it is reliable. It's a good step counter, which is all I need it for.

At one of my client's I do a lot of reading. What I just started doing this week is getting up after I finish a chapter and walking around the house. It helps me to get more steps, and it gets the blood pumping. It's not good to sit for too long. I'm now going to work on doing something similar when I watch TV at night.

This tip came from an article I was reading in Women's Day, and thought I'd share it with you. The reader states that while her dinner is cooking, she marches in place to log more steps. I think it's another good idea.

At work, it is hexagon-shaped on the inside, and it's called walking the hex. 5 times around is 1 mile. Now that I know that, I try for 1 mile a day on my short days. On my longer days, and if time permits, I strive for 2 miles.

Thanks, WALKING-WONDER, for your suggestion about walking the "Hex" at the assisted living facility. We walk around a mall, which makes one mile. We do it three times in an hour.

One of the things I regularly do is what I refer to as a "houseabout". When DH walks out the door in the morning, I start moving. I walk from room to room doing chores, if I'm at the computer, I do my work while marching in place. I can quite easily keep my feet moving steadily for as long as I have something to do - just keep stepping. Walk in circles while folding laundry or pace while sorting before putting it in the wash. Get creative - and it helps greatly to be "inefficient" - meaning put one thing away and walk back for the next item, rather than taking both at once!

At the assisted living facility that I'm at for one of my clients there's an indoor area on the top floor that's shaped like a hexagon. For fitness, people walk the hex. I think 6 times around is a mile, if I remember correctly. Every time I leave her apartment, I go around the hex at least once. This is how I've been getting so many steps in, even in bad weather. Maybe there is a facility near you that you could walk around in bad weather.

All movement helps in reaching your 10000 steps. Today I reached 10893. This was a combination of walking at Walmart, practice piano for over an hour, cleaning house (a lot of continuous movement) and regular walking around the house. I was amazed when I looked at my fitbit and saw over 10000 steps. I don't do this every day but that is why it is so amazing when I do. Keep Sparking.

If you scroll down far enough, past some of my other comments, you will see some information about metabolic step equivalents. This is a fancy term for figuring out how many steps swimming, gardening, housework, snow shoveling, strength training, car washing...activities where you may be working very hard but of course staying pretty much in the same place...are equal to. Measuring those jobs in terms of steps helps to get that count up.

I count by miles and minutes, not steps. I got a heart monitor too for my birthday from my dad, he's going to set it up for me and show me how to use it. It's worn like a watch. He found it has features like measuring steps, when I sleep, miles walked and other features. I'm excited! He's going to show me this weekend!

Make one small change at a time. Even the smallest things make the biggest difference especially in weight loss :)

My fitbit tracks 14 hours per day of getting 250 steps per hour. I selected 8 a.m.-10 p.m. A little red dot appears for each hour I've met the goal. I really try to get those steps in. Those added to my regular walks add up to 10k pretty easily. I've averaged more that 12,000 steps per day for the past 12 weeks.

Becoming the healthiest me that I can be.

When playing tennis, I jog in place between points and on change-overs. Before, when I used to just stand around waiting for the next point, I got about 3K steps. Now I get about 4.5K. Big improvement and much more efficient use of my hour and a half of fitness time!

I like to carry a plastic bag on my walks, then when I happen upon litter or roadside trash I pick it up and bag it. Makes my walk feel very productive.

Do it, NOW!

Doing step aerobics, elliptical training at the gym. Also, walking a lot at work when I make my rounds especially when we are very busy has helped me to make more steps.

Walk with friends or people who WILL be friends. Go to www.ava.org to find walking clubs in your state. Volksmarchers is a funny name but our troops kept it when they brought this walking custom back to the U.S. 40 years ago. Now we are in every state, in Canada, in São Paulo, Brazil, and across Europe.

You can also search MEETUP to meet people who gather near you to walk or hike or do just about any social activity together. Meet ups is a very popular trend and growing fast.

Sometimes I get my steps outdoors or at the gym, but lately I've gotten most of my steps just around my condo. Not terribly exciting, but feels like success!

If I still need to get steps after the gym or walking outside, I just make a path around the inside of myhouse and keep walking until my fitbit buzzes. Sometimes I walk or job in place while I watch tv..

I usually try to walk on my treadmill when I can. I am active at work, and sit down very rarely. But, I am usually only taking two steps from side to side. Those steps don't accumulate much! Hoping to get back to more steps on a daily basis in the New Year, when family visits are over :)

I like to listen to podcasts as I walk around town - I still get to enjoy the surrounding vistas but it also engages my mind in a different way and sometimes I walk longer just so I can finish listening to the podcast!!

I'm taking a Woodpecker workshop today in Yosemite so I should get 10k+ hiking around to see woodpeckers in various habitats.

There are many good ideas here so I won't reiterate too much but getting up every hour for 5-10 minutes and walking around the house, working on the treadmill, doing walking videos, walking around the block and your house can add steps when you are not doing your daily walks~

I saw someone on the bike path reading and walking. I couldn't do that for fear of tripping or leaving the path. (I was texting once on a walk and almost ran into a tree!)

Here's one I did today that I just thought about mentioning. When I read my book earlier, instead of sitting down to read it, yesterday I read it while on my stationary bike. Today I read it while walking around my living room. So both days I was exercising at the same time I was reading. Guess reading isn't so passive after all.

I usually walk with two or three meetup groups for walking or hiking every week. Check out www.meetup.org or info@meetup.com. One of the best things I've done!

I am a member of the American Volkssport Association, the Volksmarchers, a national and international walking club brought back from Germany by our troops stationed there. Go to www.ava.org for some really great walks and future friends. I do a 5k or a 10k Volksmarch about once a week. I especially like the walking trips they offer.

I have three friends and we walk once a week.

I have two dogs to walk.

I usually walk six days a week, skipping a walk or other aerobic once a week. A rest is a good idea.

I ought to go to the gym, but after walking so much, I think I've done my exercise for the day.

I wear my Fitbit every day.

See my note below on metabolic equivalents, or how to convert non-walking exercise to steps, useful for swimming, gardening, raking leaves, shoveling, etc.

I get up early every morning to walk my dogs.....I have my clothes in a special place so they are easy to find. I put my pedometer in my pocket, walk my dogs one at a time to "do business", then come inside to eat my breakfast and then walk each one again on a longer walk.....I usually have about 8,000 steps by the time I finish with the dogs.

Let's see if we can get this thread going again! I'm curious to see how YOU get 10k steps a day....

For me it's easiest if I go to the gym and walk on the treadmill or go for a nice long walk outside. That will usually get me 7k+. Then normal activity will usually get me to 10k. If I'm short at the end of the day, I will walk in place until I get to 10k.

If you wear your pedometer on your hip or in your pocket, it will count steps for hula hooping. Well, it did for me. As for biking, I wear the pedometer on my shoe lace and it seems to counts the steps. That's what I've done, moved my pedometer around my body to see where it picks up the most steps for the different activities that I do. Haven't figured it out for kayaking yet. Maybe I need to find a band for my arm and put it on there.
