I check the sale flyers online to see what's on sale and plan my meals accordingly. You all had such good suggestions to consider. I think you've at least helped me!

I use the Apple program MacGourmet Deluxe recipe software by Mariner. It not only stores recipes, wines, etc but it has the USDA nutritional counts for all items in a recipe. Figures that all out and then you can plan meals getting the right counts and the program prints out your grocery list for you. Anyone else use this software?

I agree with grocery store sale items. Most stores show their weekly sales on their website. Some even include meal suggestions. A rotisserie chicken or a beef roast can make a variety of meals. Of course defends on the number of people to feed.

When I try to plan ahead that, I will turn the meal plan option on in SparkPeople and use that. I get lots of variety and meal ideas that way even though I don't use it for all the meals.

There is also this older SP feature for Healthy Family Dinner Planner that might give you some new ideas:

I've never used a meal planning app.

I think I'm contrary to most people. I plan my meals around what's on sale at the supermarket, instead of planning my grocery shopping around my meal plan. It saves a lot of money for me.

I do have a small freezer, so I can stock up on meats, whole chickens, frozen veg/fruit when they're on sale. And, I make foods in bulk, like soups, spaghetti sauce, cooked ground beef, etc., so they're on hand in the freezer.

Then, I'll plan the week's meals around what I have available and what's on sale. I usually do a big grocery shopping trip every 2-3 weeks, and a trip to Costco about every 2 months.

Caveat - there's only 2 of us in my house, just me and DH.

You could try Cooking Light. It has various meal planners including "Weeknight Meal Planner" where you click and drag the meal into a little calendar for the week.

I am just now starting to realize that I need to really make a weekly and/or monthly meal plan to help me with shopping for the right items.

Anyone ever use an app or even something from online that helps them with planning meals? Breakfast is usually half a bagel and a 1/2 c of cottage cheese, so that is taken care of and lunch is usually just something from the night before.

For me it is the suppers I need to plan better.

Any suggestions are welcome!
