Howdy All

Sweetney, check your salt intake.. I put on 6#'s in a week because I was eating PICKLES!!! Stitch4ever pointed this out, and the next week I lost 8#'s.

I have not been very active on the site. My dog had eye surgery last week and I have been taking care of her. She has on "the hood of shame" and still has not got the hang of walking in it. Thank God she only weighs 22#'s.

I bought DH some miniature candy bars yesterday for our road trip to Tx on Thanksgiving Day. I made a BIG mistake & brought them in the house instead of leaving in the car. Well, guess what? There outta here! I caved into emotional eating last night after results from a medical test. I am OK today & determined to improve my health!

Sweetneey, I have the same problem with ex & hunger. Does getting in some protein before workouts help you?

trying to get the hang of the blogging. I was just reading through the thread. I did not have a good day (and apparently week) cos i gained a pound. After 4 weeks I've lost 0. My exercise is fine, no problem doing that. But eating - I seem to eat at least 200 - 500 calories more than I should a day. The evening seems to be the issue. I can either eat less in the day and save the calories for the evening or I just have to control the cravings. If i do the former, I am too anxious and hungry to exercise. So it seems the latter has to be the solution. I do get very hungry after I exercise in the evening and I then just in a rage to satisfy the hunger. I'm like wild getting the dinner heated and then I woof it down and then I'm still wanting something sweet or crunchy. That is usually a soda or sweetened ice tea or pecans. I cannot believe that I consume that many calories in a day considering all the exercising I do. It is amazing. I hope I am learning something and next month I can show some improvements.

Great ideas for snacks...thanks. I forgot about frozen grapes. I used to make them, and loved how sweet and cold they were. Somewhere along the way I stopped making them. I think I'll buy some tomorrow

Dear Pannpeters, I am so sorry that your husband's plant is closing. My husband and I are retired, so we have the blessing of a fixed income....It's not a lot,but it is sufficient.. We work to provide health insurance for ourselves and our college-aged daughter.

I really sympathize with the emotional eating. That is also the hardest for me. It's a hard time, and I hope you get through it without too much snacking. When I turn to food for comfort, the thing that works for me is to ONLY have healthy food in the pantry, so I just can't fill up on starch or sweets. I've even been known to take a box of food to my dear friend's house; she brings it back when I am under control!!

I had a wonderful day, but it was mostly sitting at the computer. I just booked a trip to Iceland for February. Icelandair is having a sale. The thermal pools allow for great swimming, and I hope to see the Northern Lights. My husband couldn't fathom Fairbanks, Alaska, but Reykjavik is warmer, so he said "Go for it!" I don't need to be told twice. I was sure my boss would not like the idea, but he was delighted since February is very slow, and he needed to cut hours from his schedule. Now I hope the sun cooperates, and produces some spots or flares so I can see lights dancing in the night sky. I'm looking forward to fitting in the airline's seat a little better! Now that the trip is planned, I'll walk up and down my driveway for 30 minutes. It's close to midnight!!

I find I do better when I get all my fruits and veggies. Not only do I avoid the afternoon munchies, but I feel better. Now why can't I do that all the time? It is so easy to slip into the bad habits.

Kathy - 57 bags of leaves and counting!!!! Oh my! I am grateful that we have moved into a condo that has lawn service - no more leaves for me!

Cat - congratulations on the good blood sugar readings. The weight will come off. You can create a recipe at the recipe site then have it put into your nutritional tracking. Only have to enter the data once. The recipe program calculates all the nutrition for you. I just added my salmon patty recipe.

Jam - I hope posting helps you get through the holidays. Recognizing it is hard for you is part of staying healthy. Little steps, little goals will get you through.

Diane - .5 lbs is great! Yes, planning snacks helps. I've been bringing grapes to work - just a portion so that I don't eat more than I should. But is helps keep me from the junk food machine! When I do go to the junk machine I aim for the peanuts - less calories and better for me, plus a little salt that satisfies cravings.

Pann - if that weight gain is sudden, a lot of it is probably water retention. Don't panic, just get back on track. You aren't helping yourself or DH by eating. Hang in there!

One more message high-jacked by cyberspace...I begin again.

Irene, you're the bomb!! Finishing the Christmas challenge in record time. Keep up the good work.

I take Aleve almost exclusively for my arthritis. Lately, I've been trying to finish off some ibuprofen that I got when I had my hand surgeries in the spring, but it doesn't do me much good.

Diane, it's so easy to get behind and so hard to get caught up.

I, too, freeze grapes. I try to buy them when they're on sale and they do take the edge off--especially in the evening.

Pannpeters, it may all be due to what you've been eating, but that's not always true. This morning I was up 5 lb. since last Thursday...and my eating has been fine. I admit that I haven't been drinking all of my water, but I have been walking more than ususal. Sometimes there's just not an easy answer. Just don't give up.

Chris, there will be just a few of us for Thanksgiving at my house. We're having pasta and meatballs...I don't have trouble with portions of pasta, so I should be fine. Usually I make lasagna...too few of us would mean too many leftovers. Not happenin'.

I have a head cold and am so stuffed up. Stella's been complaining about her right ear. She hasn't had an ear infection for a while...hope it's not that.

Have a blessed day,
Kathy

Carol, I eat fruit, greek yogurt, string cheese, or sometimes I take edamame. My biggest problem is lunches when I am working. Since i only work 4 hours a day I don't get a regular lunch break and it takes me 2 hours to get home which is to long between meals. I try to take munchie kinds of things for lunch. A sandwich round with almond butter, yogurt, string cheese, a special K bar etc. I'm open for ideas.

I too was yoyoing the same 5 lbs or so. I think I've finally beaten that and started going down but ever so slowly.

Exercise is a big problem for me, but I am getting better at pushing myself to get out there an walk. I've a friend who goes to the gym with me, but she has proven to be unreliable. We were supposed to go together this morning, but she backed out last minute which didn't give me enough time to go and get back in time for a lunch date. So, planning on walking this evening after lunch and finishing cleaning the living room and ironing.

My daughter is fixing Thanksgiving dinner, so I will definitely need to be careful. She is fixing ham, as they like the way my turkey comes out better. I'm doing Christmas.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. Eat healthy and get that family out to walk after eating.

I was surprised when I got on the scale this morning and found that I had gained 7 lbs.!!! I weigh more now that when I joined SparkPeople two months ago. I have been yoyoing over the past couple of weeks since learning my husband was losing his job due to his plant closing. While I knew I was doing some emotional eating, I was really smacked in the face with these results. Now I have to add in Thanksgiving and all of the upcoming holiday parties and stuff. YIKES!!!

Carol, I freeze grapes for snacks, grape tomatoes & trying to have herbal tea more often. Today has been a better day-trying to stay with the SP menus which has more protein than I usually plan.

Lkinic, I gained 10# while recouping from rotator cuff surgery 9 wks ago & back down today on weigh in at Doc office pre-surgery. I am stuck at today's wt - will try to stay on track Thursday.

We can do it!

Lkinic I did that same dance for the longest time lose 5 gain 5. It is almost as though, we give ourselves license to engage after a loss.

Carol, snacks, I snack on rice crackers, yogert, grape tomatoes as well as other vegetables.

John, hang in there.

I find, if you eat well all day and don't skip meals snacking is under control.

Jam55555, We all experince what your going through. Just try to get through today ''one day at a time.

Jam555555: I can fully understand and sympathize. I, too, have been struggling lately and just generally feeling out of sorts, like something is not quite right. I've been losing and gaining the same 5 lbs over and over. I need to get my head on straight and really concentrate on meeting my goals. Sometimes it's easier said than done, but I'm not ready to give up! Jam, emoticon

Way to go Irene, your loss is inspiring.

I am on the diabetic SP plan and it includes 2 snacks, and 3 meals a day. Is that different than regular SF menus? At first I followed their menu suggestions, and then started creating my own as I felt more knowledgeable. I take snacks every day to work, because they are the hardest to buy, lunch is fairly easy. Blackberries have been reasonably priced here lately and they are favorite, as are bananas. Of course, there is the stand-by of carrot and celery sticks. I also indulge in the 100 calorie Cheese-It snack packs occasionally. What do the rest of you like to eat for snacks?

Our day to travel home, so I must go.

i also get hungry between meals, I have started trying to drink water first before I snack on anything. Many times I find that I'm really dehydrated instead of actually hungry.

I'm on roll clearing out these emails, have been on here longer than I planned. Oh well, I will still get everything done on today's list.

Keep working on the healthy eating and exercise. If I can do it so can you.

I've had to catch-up on reading, so I didn't take many notes ( i was on here a week ago Sun.!) That is a lot of reading! I just have a comment on the munchies - any time of the day. If I miss a meal I get very hungry. Then I want to eat whatever is in sight. So, I think it is a good idea to put some snacks in the plan. I have been eating grapes, celery sticks, and a little trail mix - not all at once! Or maybe a yogurt, though that is more calories. Right now my weight loss is going .5 lbs at a time. I'll still take it. Keep it up, ladies & John!!

Good Sunday morning to all SP friends.

Church this morning, then to the bistro for my weekly breakfast. After breakfast my friend and I went to the Walmart neighborhood market and staples. I didn't need much, just some more fruit and a few things for when my grandson is here next weekend.

Joan, thanks for the tip on the Aleve. I don't take it very often, only when I've exercised extra hard and feel like I will be really sore the next day. Any other time I take Tylenol.

Going to spend a little more time catching up on these emails, then i need to get moving to do the vacuuming, ironing and laundry. Plan on getting a 30 - 45 minute walk in after I'm done with the housework.

Tomorrow I'm going to the gym early with my gym buddy, need to get home in time to get a shower before going to lunch with my friend and her Mom. Hopefully I can get the ornaments done tomorrow and then work on the candles on Tuesday. May go to the gym Tuesday as well, my buddy needs to check her schedule. She's doing a lot of cooking for Thanksgiving, I don't have to cook anything!

Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday. We are all in this together and I know we all can be successful. One step at a time, one pound at a time.

I'll try to check in later tonight if I'm not to exhausted.

It's still raining after four days, but it is cool, not cold. So walking is still possible. My hubby and I walked to the falls last night, because they have finally begun to run again after a dry year. It was dark, so we couldn't see much but the sound was glorious. It was a 75 minute expedition, so I pretty soaked when we got home. Umbrellas don't work for me, because I use trekking poles when I walk. They help me go faster, and improve my balance.

Cat, someone posted that not losing is still a victory, because we have not gained. I loved that thought. It know I will need it sometime in the future. Luckily, I am still so overweight that the pounds are coming off, but I know when I have lost more, it will be harder.

I find my downfall is counting my chickens before they hatch. In other words, I'll think in two weeks that I'll be at 240. Suddenly I am magically thinking that I am at 240, and I have to remind myself that by making this assumption, I am taking away my chance to celebrate when it does happen!

I had to exchange my uniform for the next size smaller this week. That felt good. I hope my daughter notices the change when she comes home for Thanksgiving.

Happy day to everyone, Carol

Welcome SP! It is Sunday. A short, but busy week for me. I will go and recheck out the food counter and enter my food for today and see how it goes. I don't know what we are having for dinner. I have my lunch planned out. Didn't seem to lose weight this week. I had a piece of fried chicken and a jelly sandwich on a sandwich round. We really didn't have the food I usually eat in the house. Today will be better--shopping day. I will have food in the house I can eat. I really want to lose weight, but my motivation has been waning and I have made some poor food choices despite measuring. I am starting a fresh this Sunday. Hoping for a better week. Hopefully Thanksgiving won't derail me. If I keep my wits about me and stay determined, I should be able to do this. I need to let the gunge ho come back out. I felt so good and strong. Need to g back. I think of all the good choices I made--passing up donuts, cake and ice cream and yet I beat myself up for not losing. I see where I went wrong at the Mexican restaurant and eating fried chicken even though I had one piece--it was high in calories. I didn't eat enough vegetables and fruit and didn't count my fat with the fried chicken. Really need to rethink myself and not change my mind at the last minute. I need to exercise my muscle power and be able to rethink healthy choices despite what is put in front of me. I could have had something different than fried chicken. I just didn't do it. Here is to putting one foot forward one meal at a time.

Happy Sunday!
Cat emoticon

Good Morning to All from South Louisiana. I didn't know about the Aleve WALDO49129 & glad for the info-have been taking it for my aches/pains. I wrapped Christmas gifts yesterday afternoon & my shoulder was so painful d/t rotator cuff surgery 8 wks ago. My DH drove over to Pizza Hut & bought a supreme pizza so I wouldn't have to cook dinner. I indulged as usual but had SP suggested breakfast this morning. I am back on track today.

Good morning from NYC, its going to be a nice day mid 50s.

Chris you said you take aleve, it raises your blood pressure and if you take it too often can cause a problem with your stomach. It happened to me, I would take it once a day when I was watching my grandson. I had to stop taking it. Now, I take advil.

Welcome to all who had a weight loss and to those who did not keep on trucking emoticon .

Have a great day all.

Stillhere, we will never get away from the daily fluctuations...so it's best to not make more of them than they're worth. It may be frustrating, but it's real for all of us.

Cat, I've been very happy with logging my food on the site. I love that it's MY food and that I can enter recipes I use in order to really have dependable calorie counts. For me, tracking my food has been a Godsend...and a huge part of my weight loss.

Jamm, welcome back. We've been where you are--just keep plugging along. The demons we battle are far too familiar, and that's why they can still be a problem. Come here for the support and encouragement. Celebrate our successes with us (and your own) and prop us up when things start deteriorating. We need you too.

Chris, sounds like your day is all taken up. I hope you got everything done!

Carol,I hope your sloshing wasn't too sloshy! It's not always easy to make the decision to get out in spite of what the weather has done or is doing.

AmyB...thanks for the greeting. You have a great weekend too.

I'll probably be back tomorrow after church.

Welcome AmyB!

Well, got some shopping done, didn't find the toys I needed, all to expensive. I guess I'll be doing a lot more shopping in the coming weeks. I did the new blanket for my bed, now I have enough so when my grandson comes this next weekend he has enough for him to keep warm.

Came home and rested, took a short nap then to out the recycling and went for a nice 30 minutes walk. Right now my legs are complaining. Guess I'll take an Aleve before bed tonight.

Tomorrow is church, breakfast at the bistro. May stop at the grocery store need to get a few more things for when my grandson stays. Then I'll get the vacuuming done and iron those table skirts.

Time to fix some dinner and then work on that stocking while I watch my DVD.

Have a wonderful restful evening and a great rest of the weekend.

Chris

Happy Saturday,

I work weekends, so my time-off starts on Monday, then I go back to work on Thanksgiving Day. Lucky there are no children at home, and my husband has the same schedule.

Cat, I use the food grouping, or recipe tab when I eat something that has been prepared for me. If I take a cup of chile, I mentally note the portions of ingredients in it. Like: looks like 1/2 cup beans, 1/4 cup canned tomatoes, 2 TBsp of onions, !/4 cup ground turkey. It is amazing that this site computes the nutrition information so quickly! The food tracker really helps me control my eating. I put everything down, even on bad days, so I can see the results. If I have gone over my calories, I'll try to put in 15 more minutes of exercise. If I am under and am hungry, I'll allow myself an evening snack. It does take time, but it has really helped me.

It rained all night, so I'm going to slosh up the trail for 30 minutes. Have a good day. Carol

Good Morning SP friends,

Well, here it is the first day of Thanksgiving break. Slept in, had my coffee, read the paper and had breakfast. Wanted to check in here before I hit the road to do errands.

Lots to get done, will fill everyone in later. If I don't get moving now it will be harder to get out of here.

Cat, thanks for the info on the fitbit. I did receive the email that says it was shipped, tried checking the tracking but says there is nothing there yet. We'll see how long it takes. Hopefully it will be sometime this week so I have more time to upload everything.

Off and running, LOL credit union, Target, Walmart, Anna's Linens and Grossmont Nutrition. Then home to clean and get my walk in.

Have a wonderful day to all.

Chris

I haven't posted in awhile. I don't know for sure what's going on but just feel a bit stuck. I was feeling very good about my exercise but my emotional control over food choices cropped back up. I was dreading reading all the posts about everyone's success but this morning I finally decided to reconnect. I think the emotional stuff just comes from all the holidays and food and past memories. I'm going to work a bit harder on new holiday memories. I am so appreciative of this group. It really helps me to know that there are others out there who've struggled and succeeded.

Sorry for the short post yesterday. My computer went into virus scan mode and the scans take 30 minutes to finish. All is good. Today I didn't get to my meeting. I slept in. I figured I needed the sleep. I go get my hair cut in a little while and then I go play Mahjong. I am so excited. Just us this time--piece and quiet. I need that today to clear my head. We are short on money too and I have so many gifts to get--My DD1 and DSIL1, My DD2 and her fiance, My granddaughter, My FIL and my DH. DH is so hard. He just says he doesn't matter--he is just taking on the martyr role and it drives me crazy. I don't like crowds so I usually don't go out on black Friday. Although my DDs have gotten good deals. You just need to know what you are looking for and I don't know what I am looking for. I can't do anything until the next pay check.

Turkey Day emoticon will be fine. Sometimes I want to throw the scale away. It shows I gained and I have been so good and cut back. Maybe I cut back too much. I was trying to make up for our Wed. Mexican lunch--so salty. I have been very careful. My blood sugars have been good. I am going to start writing down my foods again. Need to get a food journal. I know they have a tracking site here so maybe I will go back and try that again. Seems like it takes a long time to add a day's meal. It does keep track of my calories which is good. My husband's meals don't fit so neatly in it when he makes meals that have more than 1 thing in them and I can't track the amounts. I just eat a cup of his casserole or chile and then I know I have had my servings according to the dietician. So I would go back to county carbs in my journal. I think that would be easier for me.

Well got to get ready for my day. I will measure today and eat my portions. We are having casserole tonight so I will have one cup and cook up some vegetables to go with it. Maybe even a salad.

Well Take Care!
Cat emoticon

It would be nice if we lost weight one pound at a time instead of ounces and fluctuations.

My weight can vary almost 5 pounds in a single day--so I try to ignore the daily changes and weigh my food to keep on track.

I bought a small digital food scale that works great--I'm getting a real education in portion size.

I started SP with their menus and it was great. I agree that it made it easy to just follow what was planned for me. I especially liked the shopping list.. Just print it up, shop for food only on the list, and then I was ready to make what was on the meal.

The number of bags of leaves that are being raked up is amazing! It rained in the California Sierras all day. Snow is predicted next week. Leaves in the valley are just decomposing under our feet!

I too like the SP meal plans. My biggest problem are the lunches. Since I only work half time I don't get a lunch break, and it takes me 2 hours to get home. To long to wait for lunch especially if I go to the gym directly from work. So I have to bring food that I can eat at my desk. Since we are off this week, it will be much easier.

Planning on getting a lot done this week, my to do list keeps getting longer and longer. Did manage to get a few Christmas gifts today! Got most of the girls done, now the hard part, the boys! Just getting things for the kids this year, money is tight.

Hope all had a successful week. Have a wonderful fun filled and active weekend ahead.

Congratulations on your weight loss, Betty. Keep up the good work.

Cat, remember that your stomach can't tell a holiday from any other day. There are many temptations, yet sometimes we fix for our families things we shouldn't have...they probably shouldn't either. We should do our best to try to feed our families healthy foods. Traditions make it harder...sometimes just choosing a small portion works.

Pinkflylady, the beauty is that we CAN start again...whenever we need to.

Chris & Up2menow, I'm loving my Fitbit. I love that it syncs with the computer. I hate when it tells me how much of the day I'm sedentary...but that's still a good thing. I just have to work at increasing activity. Not to be negative but it took a while--the link to track wouldn't even work at first and then, when it did, it said that the package was scheduled for pickup...days after they sent me a message that it had already shipped.

John, you're doing great. Thankfully, you know that walking really is good for back pain, but most people won't do it. Stick with it!!

2behealthy--just don't quit. Not one of us is perfect, but we are improving. This is still a day at a time living...just do today...everyday. That's exactly where the rest of us are!

Joan, the Fitbit is advertised on the Spark site--usually in lime green!

Yesterday I finished picking up leaves in the front yard--57 total bags.I still have the side yard and back to do, but there are no sycamore trees dumping leaves there. For the first time yesterday I hit 10,000 steps--now to maintain that daily!

Kathy

Just a short note to say I am alive and been staying OP. Don't feel like I am losing. Monday will tell the story. I go to the dietician on Monday. I have been thinking about the holidays and planning what I will eat in my head and picturing the portions. With inspiration, I hope I can do this. Well my computer is being scanned. See you later. Mahjongg this weekend. Yay! emoticon

I have been following the SP Meal Plans this week. I am feeling more in control than planning meals on my own. I think the suggested menus are very affordable too. emoticon

I stay away from salt, sugar and fat. After which, it is pretty much carte blanche.

My DH & I always go out for Thanksgiving. I had never thought about the advantage it gives in controlling what we eat. I am going to review the buffet menu and choose my meal in advance. The restaurant always has lots of veggie choices, fruits, etc. Since I love turkey much more than stuffing or potatoes, with planning I should be OK.

I'm working on having fruit available at work for snacking. Right now I can get yummy seedless grapes at a good price, so I bring a portion each day. The big thing will be to make this a habit.

I beat the munchies by keeping busy and planning snacks into my plan. I have found that I need to be careful that I don't get so busy that I forget to eat. That leads me to very bad food choices. Busy for me can be the computer, scrapbooking, puzzles, reading or even cleaning.

My eating has been good this week, but not so good with the exercise.

Tomorrow is the last day of work then one week off. Hurrah! I have a full list of things to get done, but plan on getting exercise in everyday before I will allow myself to do anything else on the list.

I have cut back on the amount of TV I do watch. When I do I usually am doing something else like crocheting, sewing etc. Sometimes I look through the paper or magazines which tend to pile up around. One thing I do try to do is if I start getting the munchies and feel like I can't control it any longer, I turn off the TV and lights and get into bed and read for a little while. For some reason that seems to help.

I ordered my fitbit last night, just got an email saying that it has been shipped. Should have it early next week.

Have a wonderful Friday!

Wow Diane, Kazakhstan!!! I love travel, and other cultures. I studied anthropology, and became an archeologist for awhile. What do you do in Kazakhstan. It is so easy to lose things when traveling, with time changes and so much to keep track of.

Joian, I'm sure 39 degrees feels extra cold. What do you do for exercise when it is that cold?

I agree that busy hands and mind takes me out of my hunger zone. When I do clay work, I can literally go all day without eating, and never notice.

I missed exercise yesterday, so I am doing double duty today. A beaufitul fall walk this morning, and 30 minutes of climbing stairs tonight.

I have been reading the SP articles on Thanksgiving. I can picture my plate now. Turkey, roasted root vegetables, a nice spoonful of cranberries, and green beans with a sliver of pumkin pie for dessert. It is even better, because I am not cooking this year. No tasting, and no left-overs.

I am going to start another puzzle. Tried to learn knitting/crocheting but not good with crafts-more of flower bed & other outside yard activities. Keeping the hands busy does help. I'm watching too much tv-use to watch only a couple of nights. I will use more willpower.

Hello all.

I got distracted from the Christmas challenge. Sigh. I am now overseas working in Kazakhstan. I bought a Fitbit to bring and lost it in the Moscow airport. I'm having a friend from the states that is arriving in two weeks bring another. May not make the 16 pounds but I'll keep trying!

John - you had a good week even with a couple setbacks. Keep it up!

CJFlossie - sounds like you had adventure and exercise in your travels. Some airports are big and confusing so I know it was a challenge.

You are so correct in saying that keeping hands and mind busy can put off snacking desires. When I am busy, I don't feel the urge. Now to figure out how not to get bored sometimes...

I have found that if I keep my hands and mind busy, I have less trouble with my desire to snack. I try to have handwork of some kind plus I have discovered audio books to help keep my mind busy at the same time. Keep fighting the battle.
