wow! be sure to read the second story to fully appreciate the first!

Two Great Stories - BOTH TRUE - and worth reading!

STORY NUMBER ONE

Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago . Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for

enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.

Capone had a lawyer nicknamed 'Easy Eddie.' He was his lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's

skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.

To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big , but also, Eddie got special dividends. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate

was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block.

Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him. Eddie did

have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object. And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to

teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there

were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example.

One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done. He decided he would go to

the authorities and tell the truth about Al 'Scarface' Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some semblance

of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great!

So, he testified. Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street . But in his eyes, he

had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a

rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine. The poem read:

The clock of life is wound but once,

And no man has the power

To tell just when the hands will stop

At late or early hour.

Now is the only time you own.

Live, love, toil with a will.

Place no faith in time.

For the clock may soon be still.

STORY NUMBER TWO

World d War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot

assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he

was airborne, he looked at his fuel gage and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have

enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly,

he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet.

As he was returning to the mother ship he saw something that turned his blood cold: a squadron of Japanese aircraft were

speeding their way toward the American fleet. The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but

defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger.

There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet. Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he

dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised

enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible

until all his ammunition was finally spent. Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or

tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible and rendering them unfit to fly.

Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered

fighter limped back to the carrier. Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from

the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had,

in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft.

This took place on February 20, 1942 , and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval

Aviator to win the Congressional Medal of Honor

A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29.

His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in

tribute to the courage of this great man.

So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his

statue and his Medal of Honor. It's located be tween Terminals 1 and 2.

SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?

Butch O'Hare was 'Easy Eddie's' son.

Live the life you've imagined!

The Best Place To find A Helping Hand is Right At The
End Of Your Arm..
We all need support from other people. Love, encouragement, words of advice and friendship help us do things we never thought possible. When people are in your corner, you can feel like taking on any challenge. As important as help from others may be, though, it all has to start with you. If you’re waiting for someone to solve your problems, or wondering when someone is “going to do something about that”, you may be waiting a long time unless you look to yourself first. Take responsibility for your own situation and think of what concrete steps you’ll take today to help it. If you’re going to need help, it’s only fair that the person with the most at stake (you) is willing to make the same effort. When someone is pulling you out of a hole and has grasped your hand, you still must take the first step to climb out, or you’re just going to be hanging there.

What lasts, What is important can only be seen by the heart.

It is difficult to lead farther, than you have gone yourself. Unknown

Hi everyone,
Here are a few thoughts for Saturday:-

Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Do not set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.
DO NOT GIVE UP when you still have something to give.
Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
The quickest way to receive love is to give love; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly.
Do not dismiss your dreams.
To be without dreams is to be without hope; to be without hope is to be without purpose.
Life is not a race, but a journey, to be savoured each step of the way.

Hi,
Here is a poem for Friday:-

If I could catch a rainbow I would do it just for you.
And share with you it's beauty on the days you're feeling blue.

If I could build a mountain you could call your very own.
A place to find serenity a place to be alone.

If I could take your troubles I would toss them in the sea.
But all these things I'm finding are impossible for me,

I cannot build a mountain or catch a rainbow fair
But let me be...what I know best,
A friend that's always there.

Thought for today:-
Friendship - pure, unselfish friendship,
All through life's allotted span,
Nurtures, strengthens, widens, lengthens,
Man's relationship with man.

Again this could have been written for SP.

Brandi1809, I like your challenge. For me in order to be successful I have to venture out. I need to welcome new members to our team. I have to post on the message boards. I have to read others journeys. I am not able to be a winner without stepping out of myself. My success is there for me with a continued reaching out.
Thanks for your thoughts. Have a great day.

Hi,
Wednesdays thought is a challenge. Are you up to it? :-

If you’re in a comfort zone, afraid to venture out,
Remember that all winners were at one time filled with doubt.
A step or two and words of praise can make your dreams come true.
Reach for your future with a smile; Success is there for you!

Morning all,
Here is Tuesdays thought:-

I believe that if you give, even just to one, that gift will grow in magnitude before the day is done.
I believe that comfort comes from giving part of me
And if I share with others, there's more for all to see.
I believe that love is still the greatest gift of all
and when it's given from the heart, then not one of us will fall.

What a gorgeous morning!

Thought for Monday:-
If everyone lit just one little candle what a bright world this would be.
It is better to light one little candle than to stumble in the dark.
Why don't you light just one little candle today,
All you need is a tiny spark.

Here's a thought for you all on Sunday:-

God made the world with a heartful of love. Then He looked down and saw that we all need a helping hand, someone to share with, who'll understand.
He made special people to see us through the glad times and the sad times too; a person on whom we can always depend.
Someone we can call A FRIEND.

'He' must have had Sparkpeople in mind.

Hello there, here is Saturdays thought:-

Your task: To build a better world," God said.
I answered, "How? The world is such a large, vast place, so complicated now. And I so small and useless am, there's nothing I can do."

But God in all His wisdom said,
"Just build a better YOU."

We are all on the way to building a better us, keep going,

Hope the following brightens your day:-

How can I find the shining word, the glowing phrase that tells what your support has meant to me, and

Saw a great quote this morning, and said, "Wow". Then when I logged on, I saw the topic "Inspiration" and I just have to share it with all of you:

"We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action." Frank Tibolt

This especially hit home for me. I am a great procrastinator and if I wait until I feel like exercising, I won't, so I have been saying I only have to walk for 5 minutes, then I'll stop. I ALWAYS walk longer - just have to trick myself into action, then I am inspired to continue, like the quote.

Just joined yesterday - I am so excited about this site - several of you have helped me already!!

I loved this thought:-

We all leave fingerprints!!!
On walls, on furniture, on doorknobs, dishes, books,
As we touch we leave our identity.

Please where ever I go today, help me leave heartprints!!!
Heartprints of compassion, of understanding and love.
Heartprints of kindness and genuine concern.

I shall go out today to leave heartprints, and if someone should say "I felt your touch," then it will have been a good day.

Much love,

Hi
Saw this and thought it was appropriate to our fight against the flab:-
We must live through the dreary winter
If we would value the spring;
And the woods must be cold and silent
Before the robin sing.
The flowers must be buried in darkness
Before they can bud and bloom,
And the sweetest, warmest sunshine
Comes after the storm and gloom.

Makes sense doesn't it.

Hi Brandi,
I hope to visit the UK sometime. I love to travel. I love the song Wind Beneath my Wings. It came out around the time my mother passed away, she was always my hero and that song still reminds me of her. It is a great, inspirational song. I live in Utah where I presently have 42" of snow in my backyard. This winter has been extraordinarily wet. We have had snow storm after snow storm. Living in Utah for 19+ years this is the first year I remember snow like this.

emoticon to the team. Here in Illinois we just had 6-12 inches of snow depending on where you lived. I would have preferred rain anytime.

Brandi that is a very good uplifting song. Here in Michigan it is a very white winter wonderland, it is so pretty. Kids are happy no school today, they love those snow days. This is such a great team and glad you are part of it.

2008ISGREAT that is another great song to inspire us on. I like this now. I'm going to try to think of a another song and when I do I will add it on this thread.

I have always loved that song, but had never thought about it applying to SparkPeople until now. You are right, the members here are "The wind beneath my wings".

emoticon It always rains here in rainy Vancouver, and as the radio annoucer always says, you live in a "rain forrest" you should expect "rain". I like the rain because it gives me a chance to do things that sunny days don't, I can read, or listen to beautiful songs like the one you quoted, I can play with Karmin the cat..or not..but rain is ok liquid sunshine and all emoticon

Here in southern Ontario it rained hard all day Wednesday. About 4:30 p.m. it changed to snow. It was amazing how quickly everything turned white. The snow is really heavy because of all the moisture.

The Wind Beneath My Wings IS a very uplifting song. We are glad you are on our team. Thank you for sharing.

Hi from the UK. The weather isn't so nice today but at least it's not raining.
I was listening to the radio this morning and heard a song which immediately brought Sparkpeople to mind. - The Song? - 'You are the Wind Beneath My Wings'- it gave me a great feeling to know that I am apart of this and that I have you all as the Wind Beneath MY Wings.
