Hi ladies, I know it's been along while, been out of state for a couple of wks and basically taking care of life this summer, I am exhausted and so side tracked. Thought I would shoot you day 43!

Day 43- CHOOSE TO! (Not have to)
CHANGE YOUR WORDS!!!

Telling yourself you "have to" didn't work last yr. and it won't work this yr either. So- Stop Saying it! Change to: I CHOOSE TO!

Saying "I Choose To" puts you in charge and affirms that you want results.

Eliminate the harsh, parental self talk, it can make you feel oppressed and rebellious. Say "I choose to" than take steps that move you toward the outcomes you want!

Mini Task: Write down 3 steps you can do to move you toward your goals!

Mine:
1. Start sparking again
2. I will add my wt loss goals to my nightly journaling.
3. Only F&V''s after 8

Tonight I sparked
Today I bought fruit and filled my fridge w/it
Today I will write in my journal my new plan of action.

Great to see you all still sparking, I miss you ladies!
extra credit: I am gonna review my 100 secrets to wt loss notes. I really need a refresher! I can do it! You can do it! We can do it! emoticon

I love it hot, but 100 degrees is too hot for me to even be in the pool for very long. Good for you for exercising in the house.

Rode my stationary bike this morning for 31 minutes and swam in the pool with my friend for quite a while.

It rained like crazy here late afternoon, after we got out of the pool. Two days of cold rain, yesterday and today, will make the pool even colder tomorrow. That's ok, I will just pretend it is really warm!

Had a much better day today.

Walked and swam today. Did get the pool clean. It is still cloudy from so many small particles of the dead algae. I have gone to the pool store, and all of the chemicals are fine, so I bought some clarifier, it is supposed to gather up all of those small particles of algae and put them out through the filter.

Walked and swam today. Sat in the sun, and read my book. Sat in the screen house when I had enough sun, and when it rained.

I so love summer!

Started tracking my exercise and food yesterday. Intake about the same as usual. Exercise is down too much. I really have to stay on that exercise or other commitments will steal me away every day.

I walked today with Hubs and our dog, Sadie J. Not very fast though. I will need to swim for 30 minutes to get enough calories burned for the day.

Bonnie,

How is that pool cleaning for the summer going? Yes! We have to help the Polaris out too. I suppose the manufacturers can't program a pool vacuum that covers every square inch. We had another round of rain storms yesterday afternoon and more debris ended up on the bottom. Boo! Grateful for the rain though because the summers get so dry here after May.

Hey, Marie! 30 or 40 degrees must be in Celsius. I am trying to imagine living near the equator without A/C. I feel for you. We have enough humidity and heat to feel like we live in a steamy jungle here in AL. July, August and September are called Dog Days here and we don't move too fast. It's just too dang hot!

Waiting for Maci's post for today. Running to get my hair colored and cut this p.m. Will check back tomorrow.

Adios!
Pat

I am also working on tracking so that I can get my portions under control. Doing pretty well lately.

I like the idea of making a "change" list. I will have to do that this evening.

Going to a "Luau" at the theater in a bit. It is a party for all of the volunteers that work throughout the year. Will be a good time with lots of good friends.

Last night I went to see "Young Frankenstein" at the Toledo Rep community theater. The entire show was professional level. Such fun and fast moving show. I generally have a fit if a show is 3 hours long, including intermission, but this show was so entertaining and well done, that I didn't even care.

Still working on the pool, getting the last of the dirt from the bottom,Scott and I justput the solar cover on so hoping for some warmer days and nights. I will be getting in either this evening or in the morning to help the automatic pool vacuum get all of the spots. There are always places that it just plain skips!

Have a lovely weekend my friends.

Day 41-Motivation is a choice!

Mini Task: Pick something you'd like to change than make a list of how to do it! Do your list this weekend!

I haven't had access to a computer for about 5-6 weeks with Hubs 12 hour consulting days. Missed this thread a lot.

I need to get that I-phone soon so I can connect. Though, being "off the grid" was very relaxing. Maybe, too relaxing. I didn't track my foods or exercise. Gained a few pounds. It will sneak up on you in no time!

Back to tracking! That is my single item on my Motivation list. Track, track, track!

Thanks for continuing this thread, Maci! emoticon

Believe me we have fans and air conditioning as it is very humid here and the temperatures go well into 40's. Its already in the 30's, but still not quite hot enough for air conditioning. We don't get much sea breezes but we do get lots of high winds.

I hope I hear from you again.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Enjoy your break from teaching. It is good to have something to do, but when it is all hustle and bustle, we do need a break

How hot does it get in Malta? I hope I have the right place that you live.

If you only have fans and not air conditioning, you must have wonderful sea breezes. Is is dry and not humid? Just taking a couple of guesses. lol

Just woke up a little bit ago, and decided to get on the computer early today. Usually wait a couple of hours or so.

Enjoy your day.

We have been having really very beautiful weather here, warm temps, and cool nights. Little humidity, so it is pleasant just about everywhere, and I have not had to use the air conditioning at all.

Just saw the last of my students leave as they prepare for the exams next week. Its been a long haul, and I am pleased its over. Just two adults left, with no rush and no exams to prepare for just yet.

Its very hot here now. Fans are going and the shorts and t-shirts replace the spring ware.

Its going to be months now before we get cool again.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Thanks for your support.

I don't think I want to live in El Paso! I love the hot weather, but that is even too hot for me. After I complained so about the horrible winter we had this past year, I swore I would not complain about the summer even if it did get really hot, but I think I would be complaining if I were having the heat you are.

Finished filling the pool today, and spent quite a bit of time getting most of the leaves and crap off the top of the pool, I have waited too long to open it, so it is very green with algae but that can be taken care of. Was planning on put in the chemicals I bought today to clean that up, and then in a couple of days run the vacuum, and it would be ready.

Well, as usual, something broke. I count on it every year, and just hope it is something little. It is, but I will still have to have Ron come over and fix it as I am not strong enough anymore to unscrew the plastic piece that has a very small leak in it. Don't want to run the pump and filter in case the plastic would crack more, so will have to wait.

I used to do pretty much all of it by myself. I would even put the two 50 pound bags of sand in the filter. Had to give that independent stuff up some years ago. Just glad I have people that are willing to help me.

One time years ago, when I had a broken wrist and a cast, my pump burned up. I unhooked it, took it to the pool store to get the new one, brought the new one back home, and hooked it up and was in business again.

Oh well, One does slow down a bit with age! LOL

I am not really too worried about getting it open because we are still having very cool nights. Since it is an above ground pool, when the nights are cold, the water gets cold as well.

It will be ready when it is ready.

Got quite a bit of exercise going up and down the deck steps checking on the water level, and working on cleaning the top a bit at a time. That will have to be my exercise today, 'cause I am tired now.

Went to my friend DIana's garage sale, bought a couple of books and an old shelf for the basement. then went to dinner with my friend Joyce, and we came home and sat on my nice cozy front porch for a long visit.

Was a good day.

Have a great weekend.

Congrats on the good report. Great news. Glad you had a lovely celebration!

Kids and I went to the park again today. Walked 20 minutes. Was still a bit tired from so much walking yesterday.

Beautiful weather day.

We had a hospital appointment which gave us very good news. So to celebrate we walked into Valletta from Floriana along the sea wall enjoying the views and taking in the summer sunshine, and finished having lunch at our favourite restaurant. Perfect.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Then we went to the store this afternoon and I got in another 15 minutes.

So I had a banquet client dinner last night and I had purchased the 100 days book on Amazon for my sisters to load on their Kindles. We all agreed that the book is great. My sissy suggested that I use the 1/2 off special for dinner.

I opted for taking a roll and holding it until the end. I said I would eat it only if I was still hungry at the end of the meal. I wasn't and I didn't.

Also I decided to do the 3 bites only of dessert. Since you can not taste it the same way after 3 bites anyway. And they were little bites. I stayed really close to calorie count. Love the book.

Good ideas Maci. I am into rearranging and changing rooms and find it very satisfying.

I am still in my "bad romance" with food, but working on breaking away as much as I can.

Good luck, and have a lovely week.

DAY 40- HAVING AN EATING EXPERIENCE

Eating isn't always about food. Sometimes it's about the social gatherings. You might get caught up in the "experience of eating" because it's apart of the gathering of friends/family.

Sometimes we don't want food at all, we simply want to enjoy being around it. Shopping, cooking, arranging it etc. can bring us great delight. We want to "experience" the food, not necc. eat it. Be creative by evaluating the flavors, experiment w/spices. Enjoy the flavor and textures, Make it look good and exciting, etc.

Create an atmosphere without depending on food, Intententionally plan an eating experience. The goal is to enjoy the meal, set things up to make this happen, let the food become the minor part of the experience.

Mini task: Create an eating experience you want by arranging a room, decorating a table, music to fit the mood etc. Do it tonight!

Glad to see you here.

Come to the "Chat Thread" for a bit more continuity. There are quite a few of us who check in at least a couple of times a week, or even daily.

We all need one another

Great book. Trying to find someone who can support by saying the things I need to hear. My husband is not a talker. Tried MRC and the continual change over of team members was finally the last straw. Re connecting with those who have the same struggles.

Day #38 - FOOD AS POWER!

I never thought of food as creating or increasing power to deal with a stressful situation. I have eaten food to increase energy when my reserves were low. I deal with low thyroid and low energy and brain fog is an ever present challenge unless I am eating "on plan".

Fresh fruits and vegetables especially apples and carrots are my "go to" foods that increase my energy reserves naturally and safely. Carrots and apples are naturally high in L-Glutathione which excellent for brain function. Apples are also naturally lower cortisol (stress) levels and have anti-inflammatory properties. Maybe, that's why the old adage, "Eat an apple a day and keep the Doctor away."

Day #39- FLAVOR VS TEXTURE!

Mini task: Write down and stock at least one of the things you can use to combat:
Crunchy/Chewy=examples popcorn, celery, etc.

I had identified that I prefer the crunchy stuff like chips, crackers, carrots, celery, popcorn, etc.

I have always associated crunching with stress outlet and not so much anger.

You are building a wonderful relationship with the grands, one that you cannot build later. It is good to do it now.

I know I treasure the relationship and times I have with my 4 great nieces, and my great nephew, just as I did the times I had with their moms.

We have to do this stuff now.

Have a lovely Mother's Day to all of the Mothers here!

emoticon Day 39- FLAVOR VS TEXTURE! emoticon

Often it's not the flavor but the texture that keeps you reaching for more!
When you can't seems to stop eating a fav food, it's possible you love the way it feels in your mouth.

Are your Emotions behind textures???
Chewy-Crunchy= anger eating?
Soft-Smooth= Want comfort?

If you realize your eating for texture, try to recognise what you need emotionally, address those needs in some other way. Make choices that have the textures you want but are lower cal.

Mini task: Write down and stock at least one of the things you can use to combat:
Crunchy/Chewy=examples popcorn, celery, etc.
Soft/Smooth= yogurt, apple sauce etc.

Responding to the question about food filling an emotional need. I'm hypoglycemic and at one point was Type 2.

When blood sugar dropped, I could "fix" it with a candy bar. I literally could feel something moving through my system as the blood sugar got raised.

So in time, the candy bar became associated with feeling the rush of the fix.

I went low carb in 2000 and the hypoglycemia pretty much went away.

But I still enjoy the anticipation of something good about to happen when I eat a chocolate bar.

I did get some walking in today, and am going to do 10 minutes on the exercise bike. Knees are kind of tired today, so I am taking it easy, and listening to my body.

Have a great week.

Maci, Thanks for giving me an outline to follow. I am still trying to organize the plan based on your and the groups ideas.

Today I will look at and journal an analysis. I think I should say that thanks to this discussion I am aware that I need to address it.

Have a good day all.

Did quite a bit of walking today. Had to walk from the parking garage into the building and then into my dr's office. Dr had been called away for am emergency, so I had to walk right back out. Then did a lot of walking in a store that I have not been in for years, because it is such a big store. Walked all around there too.

Had to buy a new microwave.

Hope you are all doing well.

This is a large majority of my problem. Whenever I feel helpless because I am unable to do anything to change a difficult situation, like I am right now, I eat and eat.

Am trying to concentrate on exercise, and keeping the eating down as best I can.

But the truth is just what you said, when I feel powerless, I use food to feel more powerful.

Right off the bat I am having problems, my "used to's" are still my "nows" but in keeping with the idea of how I can move forward:
Day 1:
. I used to think that being thin would solve all my problems, now I know that by eating healthily I can address my problems.
2. I used to be cynical about everyone because I was unhappy, I am a nicer person when I am not focused on beating myself up, but on other people in a good way.
3. I think more clearly when I eat healthily.

Day 38: This was so timely for me and definitely Light Bulb:
I realized last night how food gives me power. When I need to confront someone I eat more thinking to gain strength, but it usually backfires since then my thinking is distorted by the starches and sugars.

Day 38- FOOD AS POWER!

Eating can be linked to your need to feel stronger or have more power in life.
Sometimes food helps you feel more important or confident. When you eat a huge amt of food, you may get a feeling of accomplishment or even a feeling of conquering the Meal.
It is almost as if the food is the enemy and you just beat it!

If you feel powerless, food can provide a way to overcome feelings of insecurity. Look carefully at what eating does for you. Many people admit that during times of stress and anxiety, they eat to feel strong.

It's easy to let food fill the emotional holes in your life, so you don't have to face them. Tackle the real issue and try to figure out how to become stronger emotionally without reaching for food.

Mini Task: Have you ever used food to fill up the emotional holes in your life? if so when? and what would be a better way to fill your emotional needs in the future?

Hi,

Please help. my name is Rita and I am like Gabby that wrote below. So, I guess we just come in. I am going to read all the posts and order the book. Do we just check back here and keep reading what everyone writes? Will we get the assignments here as well?
I joined a while ago and then let work and stress get in the way. Now seems even harder to let myself believe that I can do this.

Hey everybody!

I just ordered the book Maci is using for this thread from Amazon.com for $0.01+Shipping/Handling cost $3.99. $4.00 total! Not bad! I have made crazier purchases in my lifetime.

It is called " 100 days to weight loss- The secret to being successful on ANY diet plan" by Linda Spangle, RN.

Looks like a good read! I have loved the daily tips and assignment. Keeps me on track with my plan and I feel like I have conquered the "dragon" of emotional eating!

emoticon

We will stay in touch! Keep reading and catch up with some of Maci's earlier posts to get an good idea of where this healthy psychology is going. You will be glad you did!

Hi, Gabbie,

So glad you decided to join us. Yes! to both questions. You can just jump in where we are...or you can go back to page 1 and start at the beginning.

Maci is the lead on this thread. She tells us the book she is using at the beginning. You can read through her posts to get an idea of how this motivational thread goes.

I have really benefited from Maci's post on controlling emotional eating and the small daily assignments really help build momentum for success over time.

Hope to see you again soon!

I hope you enjoy the small assignments Maci posts for us. She does a great job. If you go to the beginning, Maci shared the name of the book she uses for these posts. I want to purchase it. It has made a big difference for me to do small tasks and think about them daily during my meal planning and preparation. Here's to your success!

I read back a few lessons, but am going to begin right here.

I know I must go back to making small changes. My first change is to eat only when I am hungry. So, it kind of fits in with the last few lessons here.

I have been working on this for 3 days now, and am feeling better both physically and mentally. I have been eating every 3 to 5 hours, so that is helpful as well.

Glad I stopped here

Day #37 I Love to eat!

Remember: Savor your food and pay special attention to the first two bites of any food.

Mini Task: Think about the idea that maybe it's the excitement of the event rather than the food that makes food feel so good. Today watch TV or go on the computer w/o snacks in hand. Try to just enjoy the moment w/your event.

I really like the "2 bite" rule. I use that all the time now. These little assignments have helped me break the emotional eating habit that plagued me for years, then I would give up and tell myself, "what's the use; you can't overcome this. It's too hard." Thanks to this thread I have lived to prove myself wrong. I CAN DO IT! We can do it! emoticon

Thanks for the support, Maci! Great thread!

Day 37! I LOVE TO EAT!

There is a difference between appreciating the flavors of your food and liking the way you feel as you eat it! (EE-Emotional eating)

It's possible that it's not the food that you love, instead maybe you crave the experiences around food. (TV, visiting, etc) or taking away feelings (boredom, anger, etc)

You do not have to stop "loving to eat" just make sure to stop and appreciate the flavors and textures of what you love.

Day #36- SLOW DOWN YOUR EATING!

Mini Task: At the start of one of your meals today, set time for 20 min. eat meal unti 20 min is over (last bite)

Goal: to be more conscious of eating slowly and learn to pace automatically!

I liked the statement, "strong hunger does not mean you need lots of food." Sometimes, that is hard to control, especially, if I forage mindlessly for something to control the hunger rather than eat, stop, listen and reassess. I have tried to have 2 planned snacks each day, so I don't let my hunger get out of control. This helps me control my hunger pretty well.

Day 36- SLOW DOWN YOUR EATING!

The eating pause is a very distinct cue, for knowing when you should stop eating. but sometimes it will irritate you because you still want the rest of your food. "Wait"- and you wil know your done! Practice listening!

Your bodys need for fuel isn't always persistant. Some days you need more food than others. If you feel hungry you prob need to eat. Strong hunger does not mean you need "lots" of food!

Listening to your body takes practice! To recognise your body signals, you may have to slow down your pace!

Day #35- THE EATING PAUSE

Mini Task- tomm watch for the pause in your eating. Notice when you are not completely focused on your food , you may find you are done for now. Let yourself be done until you are ready and wanting to eat for fuel or flavor again! happy easter ladies!

This works well and is similar to try leaving something on your plate lesson. I have been leaving about 20% of my dinner nearly every night and listening for the "cue" that I am full. I save it for later as my evening snack just in case I get hungry rather than opening that bag of chips.

Easter was lovely!

Day 35- THE EATING PAUSE (This was one of my fav teachings!)

In the process of eating stop briefly, lay down your fork, put down the food (stretch, talk, watch TV, Blog, etc) PAUSE! after you pause, glance down at your food and decide if you want more.

When you "naturally" pause in your eating your usually at the exact point of satisfied, or comfortable. If you continue to eat you will usually eat to uncomfortable. Watch carefully for the eating pause, then use it as a guide to stop eating. If you typically ignore it and eat more, you risk gaining weight, because you'll always tent to take in more cals than needed.

Build a Habit of watching for the internal signal: Clue- when you are eating and you look up or stop for a drink or a break (not just focused on looking down and eating) you may be ready to take a pause and reevaluate. Start watching others doing the eating pause.

Mini Task- tomm watch for the pause in your eating. Notice when you are not completely focused on your food , you may find you are done for now. Let yourself be done until you are ready and wanting to eat for fuel or flavor again! happy easter ladies!

Karen,
So glad to see you're back in with Maci's thread! I just love doing these little assignments. It really helps me to mentally stay on track or get back on track quickly after a misstep.

Good luck with your new job and school. Hope it is what you need. I am still lovin', just lovin' my retirement. Let's me follow the volunteer opportunities I had to pass by during my nursing career. So nice to manage my own time again.

Day #34 LISTEN ACCURATELY!

Yes! Listening to my tum can be challenging. Usually, I am too busy talking or reading while eating. Working on this assignment all week.

Day #33 FULLNESS SCALE

This was a good lesson for today. I am sitting here at the computer trying to choke down all the raw greens I entered in my nutrition tracker; but, I am full, a +1, so I will put these greens in the frig for later if I get a little hungry. Thanks for the permission to save for later, Maci!
Love these little assignments. Good reinforcement for good, healthy habits.

Chow!

DAY 34- LISTEN ACCURATELY!

To recongnise the moment when you've eaten enough, you have to pay close attn to your body! At the moment when you begin thinking you are at it. ask yourself " Does my tum feel satisfied?" Do I feel like i've had enough food?" Almost always the answer is yes!

Learn to moniter fullness by listening to the source- the abdominal muscles that cover the stomach. By noticing the way your tum feels , not what your head thinks, you'll be able to recognise the early signs of satisfaction.

If you realize that you like feeling stuffed, work on changing your belief that full is good. Think instead 'Full is Fat'! (distasteful, obnoxious, etc) Begin labeling full as uncomfortable.

Decide you want to feel satisfied/comfortable instead! Aim for +1!
