I actually was allowed to wash my hair in the shower today and it feels so much better. Dry shampoos don't work well for me as I have very thick hair.

Just had an aha moment while watching the news. I am extremely lucky to have survived this experience - even with the pain. On the news tonight there was a celebrity who used to perform with the Beastie Boys who succombed to the cancerous form of a tumor on the parotid (salivary) gland. Mine was caught in time. Thanks be to God!

To Sandi ... about the hair... there are dry shampoos available that help remove/control oils.. your hair will look better and feel a little better. However there is nothing like a nice shower and clean hair! One of our bubble babes ( shampoo girls) uses baby powder/ cornstarch . she sprinkles the root area, all over and brushes it out! She has fine limp (do nothing ) hair, that is usually oily by the end of the day. She does this before she goes out at night or sometimes in the morning , if she is running late. Can't hurt to try! Hope that helps! Be well!

CLASSICGUY,

If you don't eat the right amount of calories your body goes into starvation/hybernating zone and holds onto the fat because it doesn't know when it will be fed again. You will lose muscle and bone so yes, it it very important to eat the right amount of calories everyday. Start off the day with a bowl of oatmeal (not instant) with a handfull of blueberries and a glass of 1% milk to rev up your metabolism. Or a boiled egg. Protein sticks with you and makes you feel full.

Happy journey!

Got a question that deals with nutrition.

Been tracking this for over a week. I have been eating healthy three meals a day and at least one and sometimes two snacks. But at the end of the day, the total calories fall short of the recommended range set for me. I have been told the calories are needed to work the metabolism in order to drop the weight. Should I try to eat more to get in the range?
I have lost 3# so I'm not complaining, just wondered if it is that important.
Any and all advice/info is appreciated.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Happy Friday!

Good news from the weather people! La Nina is over with all the cold/rain/storms/tornado's. etc and the sun is coming out this morning. Much brighter in my apartment this morning. Yesterday I dug out the vacuum and started cleaning, moving furniture, rearranging my sewing cabinet/machine putting it in front of the living room window. I think I will sew more now with the natural light. I was feeling very crowded with the machine in the dark corner of the room. I have a black velvet-type coat to repair for the neighbor and it was really hard to see it even with all the lights on so my new arrangement will be better.

Sandi, how horrible that you haven't been able to wash your hair. On the doctors yesterday they were showing how you can brush flour into your hair to absorb the oils, leave it sit a few minutes and brush it out. I wonder what would happen if you went out in the rain and got your hair wet. Would the hair get all gooey from the flour? emoticon

Mumsey, I really enjoy reading your cheery posts everyday. I hope you are getting rested up and not coming down with a cold. I have a lot of knitting needles that I have collected over the years but have never really tried to make anything other than a doll blanket. I like to crochet and do it constantly.

Cherrie, My husband and I used to go to Oregon all the time in our motorhome, going to the forts and Civil War re-inactments and Lewis and Clark museums. It is a very interesting state. We always went to Warrenton to stay in the RV park there and then go to Captain Morgan's restaurant for fish and chips. Yum! Now that I am alone I will never take those trips again but I have a lot of good memories. Tillamook Cheese factory was awsome!

I hope you all have a great weekend. I plan to go out later and get some walking in.

Glad to see a few fellow knitters. I have been working on a fisherman knit sweater for my 6 month old grandson as well as socks for me and a baby blanket for when Anthony is here. Haven't done anything since the surgery but your posts are inspiring me.

Today for the first time since the surgery I will be allowed to wash my hair. Up until now I haven't been allowed to get the incision wet (it runs all around my ear and down my neck) and I can't drive to the hairdresser. I am going to feel like a new person. The pain is slooooowly decreasing. I'll go for a recheck next Tuesday.

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. Sandi

Mumsey, ~ and an awesome job you do , keeping up the conversation!!
I'm knitting a baby blanket for my niece's son, due in July! I started a month ago and can't seem to get anywhere! ( it feels like the forever blanket right now!, but it helps keep my fingers out of the snacks~) It will be the 4th or 5th one Ive made since October, plus 2 baby sweaters and a pink fuzzy toddler vest! Which explains why I'm sort of running out of gas in the knitting department. I'm the only one in the family who knits. So far all are loving the homemade things.
When I first heard Michele talking about swimming and all the rain, I thought WOW that's alot of rain! I was thinking along the same lines "swimming in the floods" !
I'm trying to be careful, taking a sac lunch, and stayin on track with fitness... still stealing treats though. looking forward to tomorrow, to try again!
Have a great day !

HI Michele,BUGZZY, NJJAZZ, TEAROSE, RW Dan Daliagrower Sacgal, Cardiogirl, Senior, JenJenn, Deb, DJA, PDENUCCIO, Brenda, Ann, Bescats, DJA721 and all others.

Michele glad you enjoyed the swim but don't going swimming in the floods!!!

BUGZZY you sound like the outdoors are all on for you, enjoy. But as for chin ups I don't think I could attempt any yet so good on you!!

NJJAZZ I am still finding some mags to get some pictures form. I don't buy many myself but will post it when I have done mine,

TEAROSE I try my best emoticon What are you knitting?

CHERIE the mind boggles, what sort of dancing where you going to do that would affect your whiplash? Break-dancing?? Hope you are feeling better. What d=sort of meals are you eating to be so full, that is good

Brenda I have found using the food tracker a whole change in my eating habits and i love to use it. Yes saving food in your favorites certainly makes it quicker

DAHLIAGROWER I know exactly what you mean.
I went to a bookclub lunch with a few friends last Friday and because the food was in front of me I just grazed like I used to do and realise i have to change that habit completely. I did take some iced peach tea with me and had that instead of the wine I usually have.

Well I have been to work and am really tired. Didn't sleep too well as I seemed to have a cough in the night. Might go for a short walk and then a nap. I have the slow cooker doing and casserole so tea is organized if I sleep too long. DD cab cook up some potatoes to have with it.

A long day tomorrow so don't want to fall asleep on the drive home. Going on a training and have to be up at 6.00 to leave at 7.00am Home by about 6.00pm. I am going to Te Kuiti for a training day and the food is put on so will have to watch that too.

Brenda, I am in Oregon along the Coast and It has rained and rained and rained here. Today, it stopped for a couple hours so I was able to go out and walk for 45 minutes after lunch. I wish the rain wouldn't continue on here for a day or 2.

I want to say Hi to everyone. I am tired so I hope everyone has a really good night. I am still eating healthy but low on calories for some reason and I am still too full from supper to think of eating another drop. I have felt very full after all my meals these past few days.

I wish everyone a good night and a Great Day Tomorrow.

It was a beautiful day here. Sun was shining, and it was in the high 70's. Such a gift for upstate NY. I took advantage of the weather by gardening. I just love the feel of the soil as i plant dahlia tubers. I also got in half an hour at the fitness club. Felt really proud of myself. And then tonight I went to a book party at someone's home. And I had a glass of wine, and 4 cookies. Frosted! That was probably more fat and sugar than I should have had in two days. I can't understand how i can do without something without missing it, but not be strong enough to resist it when it's right in front of me.

Good morning Everyone!

It's raining and cold here, too but the weatherman said this storm is going to Oregon so it can keep going inland. I am about an hour away from Portland as the freeway goes. In the meantime it is wet and green and everything is starting to bloom.

The Nutrition Tracker is keeping me occupied since I figured out how it works. Saving foods in Favorites is the best thing to do for things you eat regularly, which I tend to do. Working on upping my protein because I was told that not enough causes thinning hair and I have noticed mine getting thinner as the years pass.

Nutrition is key to a lot of aches and pains and health issues. I don't take any medication except an antihistimine and my blood pressure is 123/72. We have a visiting nurse scheduled for an hour Thursday afternoon's to take BP's. Sometimes she can't come because of scheduling conflicts.

Have a good day. I have a pair of pj bottoms to shorten for Ray, who dropped them off yesterday so I'd best get busy.

Cherie, we also had pouring rain today! It has been pouring for nearly 24 hours! I couldn't get my walk in today, either. But I did manage to swim before it started to rain yesterday.
Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Hi Team, I hope everyone had a good day. I had a great day except that it has poured all day and it cold, so I couldn't get out to walk. I am really disappointed about that. I might try dancing for a half hour, but I will have to be really really careful because my neck is still healing from my whiplash.

HI Cherie and good on you. You are doing so well and enjoy the feelings of the new you. Thanks can only get batter more.

Sammi thanks for asking about the docs. We had a talk and she discussed my meds so I am now going to stop my cholesterol lowering tablets as I have done well with that and with everything that I have done and the tests fr my heart over the last year it seems I don't need them.
I will have tests done in three months to see and maybe then it will all be good.
She was impressed with my weight loss too and has organized an xray for my knee so things are all good.
Went for a quick short walk this afternoon and I am walking even faster now.

Hi Team,

I have had a really good day. Ate Healthy, Exercised, went to the Dr and was glad to be able to say I am feeling better and I think it is due to the Healthy Eating and Exercise. 2 weeks ago I was really feeling ill but now I feel so much better. It is surprising I could feel so much better so quickly. My lab reports were all good too.

My plans for this month as the same, healthy eating and healthy exercise and checking into SparkPeople everyday, as well as tracking everything.

Have a good evening and a great day tomorrow,

Cherie emoticon

Fiona, I love to put words together to make new ones, so that is what I thought when I saw scrummy -- I do believe it is a Kiwi word -- you are so clever. Good luck at the Drs.

So many new sparkies posting --- welcome. This is a journey, not a diet -- you should think of it as eating healthy. It's a learning experience and the best part is you feel good and look good too. Can't beat that.

Sandi, hoping tomorrow is a better day -- you so deserve some smooth sailing.
Blessing to all, Sammi

Morning RW Dan Daliagrower Sacgal, Cardiogirl, Senior, JenJenn, Deb, DJA, PDENUCCIO, Brenda, Ann, Bescats, DJA721 and all others
HI Michele have fun at the pool.

Vicki I have that attitude too. Everyday is a learning curve and in the past so each day is a new day with new opportunities and a chance to really succeed.

Eliza can you go out first thing in the morning? enjoy the warmth as we slide into winter.

Sandi I think it is your body just saying rest and let me heal. so find some books or a hobby and enjoy the sun.

CJKBSN I like the quote too.

BUGZZY after a long cold winter the summer holds such promise doesn't it?

Sammi yes that is exactly what scrummy is did you not know that or is it a Kiwi word? hehe

PDENUCCIO good on you and welcome back. Yes 15 mins ther and back makes 30 mins, but don't forget dancing or an exercise DVD/video.

Well I am home again today. Slept for 10 hours so I am feeling so much better. Its like having a weekend off.
I have been down at church for work and other things for 14/16 days, and then doing stuff for church for another 9 days in a row so if I hadn't taken these two days off it would have been 25/27 days so I knew I just needed to have a break. I get days off for doing the minutes etc for the Parish Council so these are two of those.
It's been nice just being home alone and doing nothing or what ever I like.

Today I am off to the doctor to see what this Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is going to mean to me. I am also having a bit of pain in one of my knees so will ask if that needs looking into. Its funny as I can walk and run but once its cooled down it can be quite painful

I have loaded the Bircher Muesli recipe here

Still in a lot of pain today - and I usually have a really high tolerance. Not able to do much - so I'll try to take it easy.

Happy May 1! A fresh month for this continuing journey to a healthier body. Here's wishing everyone success in meeting their goals. I saw an interesting motivational poster today: Don't let your mind bully your body. That's one I need to think about.

Happy May 1st Sparklers! Welcome to all the new sparkies! I'm looking forward to a great month.

Sandi, so sorry you are in pain -- each day will get better. The worst is behind you and this concern is now done.

Fiona, another cool word -- scrummy -- is that yummy and scrumptious together.

Blessing everyone, Sammi

Deb, each day is a new start so forget about what happened before. Are you tracking your food? I find this the best way to watch what I am eating. I can see what food benefits me the most and so hopefully in time I can just eat what I like knowing when I have had enough of each one etc. But it takes time to learn what different food holds.

Thanks for the potassium tip too. I can never seem to meet mine either but it just looks like I need to eat more veges (I though I ate enough) but I might make up a snack bag of the dried fruit and nuts etc.

Had a quiet lovely day at home with no work.(I took a day off)
Just going to go for a walk/run in the late afternoon sun.
Its autumn here so not so promising a spring time as you in the northern hemisphere but still I can make May fun

I love it! A new month! A new opportunity!
Thank you too for the tip on how to get more potassium. That is something that I am also working on!

Got great hopes for May. The weather here in Rochester NY is rainy and cold, but i still got my 30 minutes of walking in. Maybe I'll shrink when wet!
