Talk is cheap especially when I say I am getting my finances in order. Today was way over board with some necessary and some not so necessary. Our Senior Center have a nurse come in on Friday to work on your feet (called Happy Feet). I used to go every month, but have cut back on the visits to once every four months. I started out there this morning, then went to buy another african violet to replace one that didn't make it. I was to only buy the violet - well three more plants later I left. Went to Target to get a toaster as I don't like toasting bread in a toasting oven. Got one on sale - saved $7.00. Went to library and then stop at Sears Tire Center to get an idea of what new tires would cost. With winter coming on I needed to get new ones or else stay home all winter. Would you believe they were having a sale plus an additional discount if you used your Sears card? Well $393 later, I now have new tires. Of course, while waiting for the tires to be mounted, I went to Subway and have lunch. For a lady that was suppose to be watching her pennies, I managed to spend quite a few. What it all boils down to is other than the tires (necessary) the rest was (unnecessary). Such is life - sometimes we have to eat our words - but hopefully I am back to being frugal.

I did OK at lunch today, a challenge because the menu wasn't under my control. The meal was a little low on protein, but still, I made good (not excellent, but good) choices and still have enough calories left for a substantial supper without going over my calories for the day. Definitely not the disaster that this kind of situation can lead to! It really helped to know that I was going to report back tonight! Thanks for being there!

Bonnie,

I think it is Sandy who had the hip surgery but can't recall her screen name. I also could be wrong. LOL It is hard to remember everything that is happening with members on this huge board but I enjoy reading the posts. Gives insight to what others are going through, then our problems don't seem so bad. Prayers are coming your way everyday for your up-coming surgery.

I signed up to have a first year nursing student to come and visit me once a week for an hour for the next 18 weeks. It is their class assignment and they will study our problems. My girl is Lara and she is really nice. She will come here every Thursday at noon, right after class is out. There are 25 students doing this program. Six are assigned to our building so this will be interesting.

My blood pressure was 118/60, pulse, 84, yesterday so that is a good thing. I think my pulse was a little higher because I had just visited with Lara and walked her downstairs and the Thursday visiting nurse who does our BP was waiting for me in the lobby. I love living here, people are so much more careing and nicer than my old place. There was a table full of cookies and cakes on the table in the community room but I didn't eat any of it. There are entirely too many goodies here and they are easy for me to avoid because all I see when I look at them is sugar and fat. An instant turn-off.

I can hardly believe it is the end of September already.

Good Morning Thanks for the idea about the carrots Nina and I know you'll do great at your luncheon Impatien. I just walked the dog 3 miles and we both did well. I'm going to track my foods now, but so far today has been good.

Good morning! Today I'll have a challenge -- I'll be at a meeting where lunch is served. It's likely to have healthy options, but from past experience, I know the portions will be too big and there will be more carbs than are good for me. So -- deconstruct the sandwich, cut things in half, think about the MyPlate picture -- those are my strategies. Send good thoughts my way, please, and I'll let you know at the end of the day how it went.

Hello everyone! Thank you for your protein ideas! I appreciate it. Someone wrote that they struggle with veggies and so do I. Thank goodness for baby carrots! I seem to eat a lot of them. I like the taste and the crunch. Have managed to eat quite a bit of fresh spinach lately and some salad.

Kevin - You're right about it being more difficult to manage when one is on a lower calorie diet. I try really hard to stay at the minimum 1200, so it can be limiting. AND I don't like to cook -- most of the time.

I think we're supposed to get some Fall weather this weekend -- at least for a couple of days. Hurrah! Going to see my grandbabies in a couple of hours.

Take care.

I should write these things down! I was waiting for a note telling me she was ok, and with so much on my mind, it is not really working correctly.

So, since I have forgotten who was having the hip surgery, if you have left a note and I have missed it, please let me know how you are.

I always thing I will remember stuff, you know like I used to, and it just doesn't happen most of the time.

The nurse at the hospital the other day blamed it on all of the artificial sweeteners and diet pop we drank for so many years! She might just be right. There has to be some excuse!

Christy colored and cut my hair this morning, so I am all set there. Had her cut it shorter than usual in case I can not sit in her chair at the salon in the normal 8 weeks.

Hope you all are having a good day! God Bless, be back later.

Good Morning Everyone,
Thanks for the protein ideas. I had a veggie flatbread sandwich from Dunkin Donuts for breakfast. It'll be interesting to see if this is in the tracker. I love the tracker. My son is so disappointed. Both the Braves and the Red Sox are out of the Series. A double whamee and he stayed up too late last night watching the games. I'll have a tired student tonight!!

Morning All! We are sure having a lovely fall so far. The temps do make wardrobe a bit of a challenge..mornings chilly, afternoons humid and warmish. Protein is a toughie, so I will be looking into some of the suggestions here.

Bonnie - no it wasn't me for hip surgery, but in Dec. I have a hysterectomy scheduled. I know it is hard to keep track of everyone and what's going on in their lives. Great spot here to share though and give support.

I hope everyone has a good day, talk to you later.

Getting enough protein is also my challenge so I'm glad to know about the protein bars. I tend to go to canned tuna if I am really low on the protein.

So glad you had a great day. I had a good one as well, but not because of our dreary, rainy weather. More of that to come.

Had a good day with my kids today.

KEVIN

Actually, I have a protein bar that is my go to if I have to leave the house without eating breakfast or lunch even, or at night if I have not had enough protein.

One flavor has 180 calories, two of the other flavors have 200 calories. But, they both have 20 grams of protein.

They are called "Pure Protein". They can come in handy, and are helpful in a pinch. They are also listed on the nutrition tracker.

Hope you are all well, I am pretty tired, so just checking in to say goodnight!

Just dropping in to catch up on everyone. It appears that everyone is pretty busy and that is good. I am trying to switch out my wardrobe from warm to winter, but with temps in the 70's it is hard to think about turtle necks and sweaters. As for me, well if you read my blog "Tangled Webs" you will know where I am going from or going to. Is this known as the bumps in the road?

I should add some disclaimers to my discussion of protein:

1. I am not particularly sensitive to sodium. The chicken breasts I buy have added chicken broth, and enough sodium that it might be a concern for those who have to watch sodium more closely than I do. Read the nutrition labels.

2. I try not to get all my carbs from sugars, but I don't make any major efforts to avoid sugar either. People who are trying to cut out sugar more aggressively won't like my Greek yogurt and might have an issue with my lowfat cottage cheese.

3. I am not on a low carb diet. I don't subscribe to the theories that promote them, so I don't do that. Most days, I have between 52% and 56% of my calories from carbs. Someone who is trying to limit carbs aggressively will need different protein solutions than I have.

4. SP gives me a lower calorie limit of 1880. That gives me room to be less than totally accurate with the macronutrients. Someone who is trying to eat 1200 or 1400 calories per day would need to be much more precise in their diet to hit the minimums on all the macronutrients without exceeding total calories.

Nina - My go to foods for protein are low fat cottage cheese and chicken breast.

A half cup (I weigh ~113 grams) of 1% cottage cheese is 90 calories, 1 gram fat, 5 grams carbs (4g sugars), and 14 grams protein.

The chicken breasts I buy say they have chicken broth and some thigh meat. Cooked, 84 grams is 120 calories, 3 grams fat, 21 grams protein. I bake them (375 for 50 minutes) on the weekend, then chop them up and store them in plastic containers in the fridge. I weigh out how much I'm going to eat on a salad and/or building a BBQ chicken wrap or sandwich. The whole pieces they come in are too big to work with.

I also get some protein from almonds (comes with more fat), eggs (comes with fat) and fat free Greek yogurt (comes with more sugar than the cottage cheese). Minor amounts of protein are in my oatmeal and whole wheat bread. Pre-spark, I ate more eggs; with a calorie limit, I had to go to the cottage cheese and chicken breast to get enough protein and not exceed total calories.

It's a lot harder to get protein dense foods if you're going vegetarian. Protein from grains and beans will also have carbs, just as animal-based foods with protein also have fat. A former co-worker from India told me that the Hindu vegetarian cuisine relies heavily on milk products for protein.

It is possible to buy protein powder, which isolates protein extracted from whey or soybeans. I don't do that, but it's popular among bodybuilders who need to consume significant amounts of protein while keeping total calories limited.

Probably a good thought about the protein. I seem to have some difficulty with that myself. When I am done with my surgery, I will be working on that as well. I also think eating healthy will help with my healing. I am having difficulty with food because of the stress of upcoming surgery, and the pain I am in.

As soon as I am feeling better, my plan is to kind of begin again, making one small change at a time, one day at a time. That is what helped me to lose the weight in the first place. These last eight months of pain and depression, have really derailed me, but I am forgiving me and looking forward to one day at a time.

ROSIEMARIE

Welcome back We will be glad to have you with us again. The more of us, the more we help each other.

JEN JEN

Just forget about it! If you are able, begin again from right now. Don't have guilt, don't feel discouraged, this journey is a marathon, NOT a sprint. We do the best we can, and move on.

KEVIN

I know just what you mean about tracking. It really does open your eyes.. Good for you figuring out what works for you!

I usually don't have much difficulty getting my fruit in, most days I eat frozen blueberries, a banana, and maybe some strawberries if I have them in my cereal and milk. In fact, there is more fruit in my breakfast than cereal and milk Seems to help with sweet cravings some as well to begin the day with it.

But, vegetables are another matter all together. If someone would just cook for me every day, healthy nutritious meals, I would be all set, But left to my own devices, not so much!

As I keep telling myself, one change at a time, one day at a time. I know I keep repeating stuff, but that is the way I encourage myself. If anyone else is interested, that is a good thing as well.

PENNY

Good for you. We all have to find what works for us. That is why I will never go on a "diet" again in my life. I will always be working on changing my lifestyle, loving myself, and trying to recognize and STOP the negative messages I am sending to myself without even realizing it.

Also thank you for the positive reinforcement for my surgery. Counting the days.

Am I confused, did you not just have hip surgery? If you did, how are you doing?

Hope you are all having a great day no matter what you are doing!

Bonnie

Rosemarie,

Protein is good. I started making progress when I started consistently getting 90 grams of protein a day. SP had set my minimum at 60 grams, but another source indicated that 90 was a better minimum for my gender/weight/activity level.

The SP nutrition tracker has been a real eye-opener for me. I'm still not eating a large amount of fresh fruit and veggies, but I'm eating a lot less fat and carbs, and probably more protein than I was pre-Spark.

Good Morning Everyone,
I had pumpernickel bread with a little peanutbutter this morning. Hopefully, this has the protein I need to make it through the morning. About to document my tracker now. I'm driving 90 miles to Atlanta this morning, so I don't know how much exercise I'll get in today.
Hope everyone has a great day.

Good morning to all.
Rosemarie - I agree about WW not working as well for the last 10 pounds. I'm in the same spot and just stopped WW after 6 months of not much success. I've already lost one pound being back here at SP! Good luck, you will do it.

Jen - you have a very positive way to look at things. That is best to focus on the successes and learn from the bumps in the road.

Bonnie - glad to hear the pre-surgery tests went well. Monday will be here before you know it.

Have a good day everyone. One healthier choice at a time. We can do this. emoticon

I was active with SparkPeople several years ago. I lost weight and over time drifted away from Sparkpeople. Tonight I'm coming back. I've regained 10 pounds and want to stop the weight gain before I gain further. I thought about Weight Watchers but I find that Weight Watcher's doesn't work as well when you have the last 10 pounds to lose. It is better to track food and have a community of people to share ideas with.

Congrats! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I had my pre surgery testing done today. They said my EKG is perfect, my blood pressure is good, and I am sure that the blood work and chest xray should be good as well.

Looks like I am all set for my surgery on Monday. Counting down the days!

Hope you are all having a great day.

Good morning everyone! I'm trying to get back into reading the message board as one of the first things I do in the day -- it seems to help.

Penny - thank you for the encouragement! emoticon It makes such a difference!!!

Ennaid2 - emoticon So glad you joined us! What you mentioned about feeling so much older is really helped by exercise! Of course, nutrition is also very important. Staying in touch with these fine folks is really, really helpful. You'll find a lot of support and caring. Tell us some more about yourself!

Good morning to all. Well I weighed in today and I lost a pound. emoticon It's rather funny because I had joined weight watchers 6 months ago and I found their new points plus program really wasn't working for me.

Nina - keep making healthier choices and only pay a little mind to the scale - it is a fickle friend.

Mary - good for you to get back to walking and tracking, success will be yours.

Lois - confession can be very cleansing. You are right, it really wasn't that bad, but I'm sure you physically felt awful for a bit.

Bonnie - your Nook sounds neat. It will be very useful to you for your recovery time.

Lynn - prayers from me to you and Kirk

I have a workshop to go to today for my work. It will be good because I should finish just after lunch and then the afternoon is mine.

I wish everyone a super day and a safe journey.

Hello everyone. Today was the first day in about 2 weeks that I actually did well with calories, exercise and water intake. I do feel better that I am trying to get back on track. It's so hard to not lose any more weight than I have after working so long and hard at it. I know, I know...the scale is not the most reliable way to check progress and some of my clothes are fitting much better and even getting too large.

Lynn - I can't express how sad I feel reading about what you and Kirk are going through. I'm so glad all of the kids and grandkids were able to be there all at once with both of you and glad that you have your sister to help support you through this. Needless to say, I continue to pray for all of you and especially that Kirk has a peace about this. God bless you both.

Maci - I just read about your DD's wedding. I hope that it went off without a hitch and that all of you had a joyful celebration.

Everyone take care.

Nina

Hi everyone,

I'm finally back. I read some of the posts but didn't get through all of them. I had every intention of trying to workout some last week at the hotel but never followed through. By the time I got back to the hotel I was too tired.

Now I'm getting my walks in. I need to get back to tracking again. I try to watch what I'm eating but I know I eat more than I think I do. But my clothese don't feel like they are getting tight again so that is good.

Lynn - I'm glad you were able to spend some time with your family. I'm sure your sister will be a big help. I continue to pray for you and Kirk.

Lynn, I almost missed your post. What can anyone say to help you through this time. It is wonderful that your children and grandchildren had the chance to be with you both. Bless your sister for coming to help you and Kirk at this time. Needless to say, prayers are being said for Kirk and you.

Lois,

Glad you had a nice day, but food was only a part of it. You are right, forgive yourself and get on with today! Good for you. One day at a time

I think it has been said that confession is good for the soul. Whether this is true or not, I need to confess to having a very non-sparks day yesterday. First had a light breakfast as I was going to be joining my son's family for brunch. You know they say you should (whoever they are) eat a little something before grazing at a brunch. At brunch we started out with a very delicious hot cinnamon roll,a mimosa, and coffee. Then I had a crab and brie cheese omlet, cheesy hashbrowns, bacon and sausage. I did have a large glass of water!!! We sat for a very long time talking. Went to my son's home and sat visiting and watching TV. Obviously, I wasn't getting any steps in - my total for the day was 2263, Then we had chips and dip and finished off with Hawaiian pizza with extra cheese and chocolate gelato. Went home and a fell into bed.

Now that I have confessed, I really don't feel too guilty and today is a new day and I am back on track. Sending good wishes to all and take care.

Thanks for the info about out team. That is very validating.

I know that without this team, and the other small one that I am faithful to, I would not have gotten through these last 8 months without gaining all of my weight back that I lost. So, I have kept off about 40 to 45 pounds of my total loss. I am not mourning the 25 to 30 pounds I have gained back during this painful and frustrating time, but am celebrating the 40 to 45 pounds that I have kept off. I do know that without this place to come to for all of the support that I get from all of you, I would have gained all of it back.

RW

Keep those little funnies coming! I need a good laugh as well as I know the rest of you do!

Brenda,

The Nook Color, which I bought that has the book reader and the internet on, can hook up to wireless. I am waiting for Laura to come over and bring me a router that she has that should provide me with wireless access to the internet. Right now, I just have it as a plug in for my big computer.

Now that you have some money to spend, YEA, you might like one. I know I will have to get used to it, so sending messages will have to be learned, and they will probably be short.

The Nook itself was $249.00 plus tax. My friend Laura bought me a very nice case that is also a stand so I can put it on my tray table in the hospital and the Rehab center. Will have to figure out a way to use it at home, Might try to find some kind of a tray table to use at home.The stand was an extra $40.00. You will probably not need one that is so fancy, but I know they did have some, just covers, for about $20.00.

Dennis has gotten the upstairs done enough that he put all of my sheer curtains up today, and has taken my extra bed and set it up in one of the bedrooms, along with a nightstand and lamp and clock radio. Now if I have company, I have a nice place for them to stay. He still has a few things to do yet, but at least the bedroom, and the bathroom should be done this week. It will make me feel so much better to have seen how great it looks before I have surgery and will not be able to go up there for awhile. He needs to put another coat of poly on all of the woodwork, I think he is going to get that done on Weds, and then there are just a few little things to complete.

Well, my cousins are going to come over on Thursday and take the queen size mattresses up to the bedroom, Dennis could not do that by himself, then I can get the bed made and will feel really good.

Since I don't have any real prospects to move up there, I might as well use it for guests. That way, if any of my family or friends wants to come from out of town, or if someone just wants to spend the night with my after I come home, I will have a nice place for them to stay.

My mom came over today, and had a visit and helped with the curtains, and then we went to lunch with two of my cousins. Marilyn, one of the cousins who was there this morning, is going to make one last trip to the grocery store for me. Then, when I come home I will see what I need.

I am really hurting, because of not taking my arthritis drugs, my knees are screaming at me, but knowing I am going to have the surgery, I am getting through it fine. Of course, I do so much moaning and groaning that I am tired of hearing it.

But, I am in a good state of mind.

Hope you all are having a good day, Enjoy

Bonnie

Lynn,

My heart is breaking for you and Kurt. I pray that he is not in a lot of pain and that you take care of yourself. It is good that you are getting help and support because you cannot do this by yourself. We are all here for you. Post as you can. Many emoticon and prayers for you and your family.

Bonnie,

I have heard of the Nook and it sounds intriguing. You answered my question about if someone will let us know how you are after your surgery. Yes, it is a useful tool to keep in touch and also for your well being. Is there a monthly charge for one or how does the program work? I have free wireless internet here in our building. The library down the street delivers books and movies to our library downstairs because there are many here who can't get to the library because they don't have transportation. It is a good service.

I'm glad you had a good birthday with friends and family. How fun!

Hi to everyone else. I'm going to get my heart monitor this afternoon. We are having a lot of rain and wind today so I am not happy about having to go out in the mess. Trees down and power outages all over the place, Seattle and beyond but not here yet.

thanks everybody for being so involved
now for a little chuckle.

A little boy watched, fascinated, as his mother gently rubbed cold cream on her face.

"Why are you rubbing cold cream on you face, mommy?" he asked.

"To make myself beautiful," said his mother.

A few minutes later, she began removing the cream with a tissue.

"What's the matter?" he asked. "Are you giving up?"

LYNN

I am so sorry, God Bless you and your entire family during this painful time of parting. I am very sad.

KATHY

Glad you are having such a nice time. Pay the $7, I know I would have reacted just as you did, and left when I first found out, but you are doing it to take care of yourself.

Thank you for the wishes for my health and surgery.

Laura came and took me to breakfast this morning, we met Derek there. They are my personal "GEEK" squad. I had decided that I needed to buy a book reader for after my surgery, and during my recovery.

So, we discussed what I should get, I also wanted one that I could get books from the library with, and because I don't know how long before I can sit in my chair and get on the computer, I wanted the internet on it. Cheaper than a laptop!

Not that I will be writing long messages on that keyboard, but I can at least be in touch with you all a bit.

So, I bought the Nook Color. I really do not have the money to buy it,but I guess that is why God made credit cards.

I feel it is a quality of life issue. Since I will be in a brace keeping my back upright for at least 3 months, I will need some way to be connected to the world.

So, as soon as I am feeling better, I will be able to visit for a bit.

Take care and God Bless you all of my friends. See how important you are to me!

Hi, Sorry I have been busy. Kirk came home by ambulance yesterday. He is having Hospice care. He could be with me for another few weeks at most. Last week lots of his family flew in. Most are going home tomorrow. We got to see all 6 kids and all 6 grandkids so that was really nice. I am just getting through minute by minute. He is so glad to be home....he wants to die here. My sister is coming Wed and she will be a big help with paperwork and stuff like that. She can get prescriptions filled and run errands. I don't want him to be alone ever. I will check in when I can. Thanks for all your well wishes and friendship. I will read all your posts when I can.

Bonnie, I'm sorry you are experiencing more pain now. Great to hear you will definitely have surgery on Oct 3! I'll be thinking about you and praying for you. I hope you are able to find a robe that's comfortable. When I had my surgery last year, I remembered to buy larger pjs because I knew I would have lot of swelling in the abdomen area. You may want to consider buying some larger pjs, sweatpants or gowns to accommodate the swelling that is sure to occur after the surgery.

Maci-I hope your dd's wedding goes off without a hitch today! Do share pics when you can. LOL@ your daughter and her fiance for forgetting to get a license! Whooops.

I ran yesterday but didn't go to the gym. I went there and had my pass from my gym and was told it would cost 7 dollars to use their facility. They have "resort fee" and the sign explains since most of their business is from tourists in the area, they don't make much money, so they have to charge 7 dollars each time you use their place. I left without using it. DH told me to go ahead and use it, anyway. We'll be here about once a month, probably, so I don't want to miss my workouts that much. I'll go today for sure. My mother and father in law arrived at the beach house yesterday and DH and I made a recipe I found on Spark People for sesame chicken-supposedly similar to PF Chang's recipe. It was a hit! We had brown rice and mixed veggies: snow peas, water chestnuts, broccoli, and carrots, and wine/beer. DH and his dad were up til midnight talking! My mother in law has Alzheimer's so he really loves having adults around to talk with and was just talking our ears off-lol. We've enjoyed chatting with him. I've got to work on my research paper today, which is due on Thursday-yikes.

Hope you all have a great day!

Missed telling you to have a wonderful wedding today! Hope the weather is beautiful, and that you, your family, the young couple and all of the guests have a beautiful weather day, and smooth sailing on getting it all ready! Blessings for you daughter and new son in law!

Having trouble with sleeping. I know that one of my problems is making sure that I get things all set up for coming home from the hospital, and to have things nice for my Aunt Betty as she is going to stay here with my little girl kitty Sophia while I am gone.

Dennis finally has gotten the upstairs remodel done. I know there will be a few odds and ends, he can never quite get all of the little stuff when he does a project for me. I try to build in a few things that I can live without, because for some reason, he has trouble getting the whole thing done. He always has another project he wants to start when he is done with the current one. Tomorrow he is coming to move my extra bed upstairs into one of the bedrooms, and put up the new sheers I have bought for up there. I am really anxious to see how nice it all will look.

I am sure that is why he works for himself most of the time. He does take care of the machines at a couple of commercial laundries, and they are taking more of his time than he likes. He loves to come here and just do stuff. I am not really complaining about him, he has done so much for me, but it is kind of funny, his little quirks.

When Laura and Derek where here, we would just wait and see what he left almost done on each project. It is a joke between the three of us now.

One time I was talking to a man, and he told me that guys are "big picture" people. They don't have time for the small details, in fact, they don't even notice them! I think he hit the nail on the head!

Tired,so just rambling. Since taking the first of the injections, the drugs they gave me have played havoc with my sleeping habits. Now, in addition to that, I just have so much on my mind.

I have to remind myself, it will all work out, and give up a bit of that control I am trying to take back from God. Need that reminder!

Have a great Sunday my friends.

Kathy, what a perfect great away. Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy.

Maci, good wishes for a successful wedding celebration tomorrow.

Bonnie, a friend a mine found a couple of wonderful outfits for me when I had my back surgery. They fit perfecting over the back brace - about mid-calf with long sleeves. buttoned in the front. I would slip them over my head and set to go. In fact, I was the fashion plate at physical therapy. I purchased a couple myself and that was my uniform for several weeks. Thinking of you and soon that pain will be gone.

Wilson, sorry to hear about your son. That is so young to have to have back surgery. Prayer for him.

I am still doing the prayer shawls for church, but cannot knit for any long period of time like before. Just heard the other day, that I am going to be a great grandmother. I have always knit a round baby blanket for all the special babies (my grand children as well as children of special friends). Will need to get started on that because it will probably take me a while. Today the left hand is really hurting, but think some of it is the change in weather. I think the right hand hurting in sympathy for the left one. Going to put some heat on them and hope that will help.

Signing off for now take care and have a wonderful Sunday and going week.

Glad to hear you sounding so very cheerful Sounds like a great weekend. Have fun. Good to know someone that signs.

MACI

Actually, that thought is in my mind always. Once I am better, I will be able to do lots of things I have been UNABLE to do for several years at least.

Hurting since Thurs, so that makes me know the surgery is the right decision. Can't hardly wait until Oct 3rd!

Have a great weekend my friends. Makes me happy that the sun is shining here!

Good morning! We are back at the beach house in DE and enjoying the respite,even it is raining on and off this weekend. Right now, we are using the wifi at a neat shop called The Bookend Cafe. They have used books for sale as well as serving yummy coffees, muffins, etc. To boot, the owner signs!! How cool is that?? She taught at a Deaf school for ten years. :-) It is really nice to have someone we can communicate with easily. We celebrated DH's 53rd birthday yesterday by going to a very nice restaurant last night in Lewes, DE. The food was fabulous. Today, I'll go for a run and get to the Gold's gym in Ocean City, MD, which is just a couple of miles from the house (the house is very near the state lines of MD and DE).

RW-Happy belated birthday. I vaguely recall learning you and DH share the same birthday last year!

Ok, off catch up with other emails, etc.....Have a wonderful day everyone!

Good morning to all!
RW - glad your birthday was fun. I love fall as well, here in the Canada the colours of the trees become magnificent and the temps are perfect for sleeping at night.

Maci - your DD wedding location sounds lovely. Memories will be made for sure. Try to breathe and enjoy your self as well.

Bonnie - time with friends is nice. Once you get your back fixed up times will be even better for you.

I will be doing the usual weekend things - laundry, groceries, a bit of my work from school land, and I want to fit in some walking too. I have shoulder massage this morning (for migraines) and that's always soothing.

I wish everybody a good weekend and healthy choices.

Good Morning !
Thanks for the birthday wishes, I had a great day. Now Autumn is officially here too and it's my favorite season of the year. I hope you all have a nice weekend - do something different!

~~~~cute story ~~~~
When the power went off at the elementary school, the cook couldn't serve a hot meal in the cafeteria. She had to feed the children something, so at the last minute she whipped up stacks of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
As one little boy filled his plate, he said, "It's about time. At last – a home cooked meal!"
Make sure you keep us posted about your surgery in December. Good luck with that.
Had a nice day today. Went to a friend's house for a party. He lives in a little town near Bowling Green Ohio, and they have a festival this weekend. Doug and my friend Debbie spent the day cooking lots of good food, while Amy and I sat around and visited with them. We ate and some other people came and we all visited. About 6:30 or so, the weather cleared, so the others went to the festival, and I started for home. I had really overstayed, my back was hurting, but I was enjoying myself so that was good. Stopped at Catherine's to see if I could find a robe for my hospital stay, you know the one you use at home, (at least for me) is not really nice enough for the hospital! Wasn't in there very long, they did not have anything, and was glad to get out as my back was REALLY hurting when I left there. Still in some pain tonight, but it just let's me know that I have made the right decision about the surgery.
Hope this finds you all well, and having a good weekend yourselves!
Happy Birthday, RW! emoticon I hope you're having a wonderful day!
Michelle - Sorry you have to deal with yet another disastrous mess! I lifted up in prayer you and everyone else that has had such an onslaught of natural disasters to deal with.
Wilson - It's hard to watch your child suffer. I pray that for healing for your son and a special strength for you to be able to support him through this. 21 is just waaay too young to deal with back issues.
Brenda - Glad to hear all of the improved health news! I'm so happy for you!
I'm not feeling well (just a virus or something) and can't write anymore, but please know that as I read your posts I am "actively" listening and thinking of you.
Where is Maci these days? Anybody know? Or did I just miss one of her posts?
Hope all of you have a great weekend!
Nina
Wilson, I am sad to hear about your son's issues and wish him a speedy recovery. My friend is going in for an MRI today to see why her arms are going numb. She has had a lump at the back of her neck, been seeing the doctor and they think that might be the problem. She broke her back a few years ago and has been doing fine. She is the type that is in constant motion so I hope whatever it is doesn't slow her down. She is a people helper. She is very tiny but strong and can lift heavy boxes with no problem but to bend over to take something out of a low cupboard and she is on the floor. go figure.
So prayers for everyone for whatever your health issue may be.
My BP reading yesterday by the visiting nurse was 124/72, pulse 79. I have not had any problems, knock on wood. I am taking my vitamins everyday now and upping my fresh fruits and veggies. Going to add figs and dried apricots to my diet as they are good potassium sources. My vision is not blurry like it has been. Can now keep my screen at 100% instead of 125% because I couldn't read the smaller print. I was about to go to the eye doctor but now I don't have to unless it does it again.
Have a good weekend.
Have a great birthday and surround yourself with family and friends, as I know you will!
Wilson
So sorry to hear that your young son is having so much pain and so many issues. Prayers for the surgeon to find a very speedy and non invasive way to be of help to him.
RW Happy birthday and cute joke!
All the talk about back surgery I guess I could add one more. My son. He is 21. Had his MRI on Monday and goes this next Monday to see the surgeon. He has two discs that are overlapping one another and raising all kinds of issues with his nerves. He has not been able to stand straight for over a month but workers comp would not allow an MRI until PT failed. The Dr he has been seeing thus far has told him not to lift a gallon of milk. "Have someone else pour it for you." At his age and being such a hard worker and hard play time this has been very hard for him. He is now worried about what he will do for a career.
Best get moving as I am on duty at my parents today and need to track down the awful odor in my fridge before I go.
Found another joke too
..........................Purse strings.................
Honesty is
It's own reward.
A woman who ran to the mall for a quick errand lost her purse, but an honest teenage boy returned it to her.
The woman looked inside her purse and remarked, "That's strange. Earlier I had a $20 bill inside, but now it's gone, and instead I see two fives and a ten."
(Story continues below)
"That's right," the boy explained, "the last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have change for a reward."
Oh Michelle, I am so very sorry to hear you all are having to deal with yet another natural disaster. Prayers for you to get cleaned up and back to normal, and for this to be the END of this stuff.
LOIS
Thanks for sharing your surgery story. It is very encouraging to know that even though it was a tough time, that you are so glad that you had it done! Love hearing that.
NINA
Good luck with the water leaks, that is such a mess.
Brenda, Michelle, PENNY and all of you, thanks for having me on your prayer list always, and thanks as well to you and everyone else for the prayers and support during this situation for me.
I am so blessed to have you all!
bonnie I will keep you in my daily Rosary. It is the one thing that has kept me going this entire year, a very bad one here!
Nina, I hope you get your water problem fixzed! I also had a water leak 2 years ago that nearly destroyed my entire family room! It started with a leaky toilet. My husband, who happens to be a plumber, took time off from work to help me with the clean up!
There is a lot of clean up to do after this last typhoon. I am learning to appreciate the little things in life a lot more---a sunny day, a day with only minor problems LOL!
have a good weekend, everyone!
Bonnie,
You are on my prayer list all the time but more-so for your surgery. You will come through with flying colors because you are a fighter and not willing to just lay down and give up. You are lucky you have such a good support system with you.
I printed out a list of potassium rich foods yesterday so will work on getting 2000 mgs everyday. I am amazed that potatoes contain so much--1081 mgs per serving! Wow! I did not have any palpitations yesterday. The visiting nurse will be here this afternoon to take BP readings so I have to remember to go down to the community room at 2:30. Will set my phone alarm or I will still be sitting here playing double crossword games on my laptop. LOL
Monday I will go in to the hospital at 2:00 to get fitted for the BP monitor to wear for 24 hours and then take it back. That will be interesting.
The wind is coming up and it is going to rain today. Heavy rain is falling north of us but we will just get drizzles here in the valley. Fall is here. The cooler temps feel good.
Nina,
Sending good thoughts your way that you get your water leak resolved with your insurance company. Water can do so much damage so quickly. Good that you have a cell phone again. I have had one for well over ten years. don't use it much but it has helped me call for help many times. It is my security line, especially since I have been alone the past five years. For a while it was my only phone but now have a land phone since I am in low cost housing.
I have read the rest of the posts but am having a brain freeze and can't remember the rest of your names to respond individually so have a good day.
Hi to everyone!
Have been reading the post, but not doing much posting myself and I am trying to limit the amount of time I have been spending on the computer.
It seem everyone is having to deal with many issues, weather and health being the main ones. Here in Minnesota we need to deal with tornadoes and blizzards and fires, cannot even fathom earthquakes or hurricanes.
Bonnie, read your recent post and can relate to how you are feeling. The day that the neurosurgeon told me that I was going to need surgery, but is was my call. My response to her was "what are you doing this afternoon?" I have two laminectories (sp?) plus a bone fusion. Prior to the surgery, I had three injections. The first one was just great, the second not so much, and the third was no relief at all. I wore the brace for many weeks, and because I live alone I was in a rehab at the hospital for 21 days. It was one the best decisions I ever made. Will be thinking and praying for you.
Hello everyone!
I'm hoping that this is the last day that I'm dealing with the water leak situation at the townhouse -- at least the last day of restoration, unfortunately there is still other stuff to deal with like insurance. The kitchen looks really nice with new cabinets and paint instead of wallpaper.
Jen, I lost my cell phone when I resigned from my job several months ago and have lived without one until now. They are so convenient and I really missed having one. Glad I was able to get on a plan with my daughter so I'm barely paying anything. The secure feeling of having a way to get in touch with someone when I need to is great!
Michele, you have been through the ringer with the earthquakes and typhoons. I'm glad you didn't have damage and there's just a whole lot of clean up to do.
I have a headache this morning and have to get over to the townhouse, so I need to cut this short. Make it a good day, everyone!
Good morning everyone.
Michele - I can't imagine living where there is the potential for those awful storms. Glad everyone is safe and sorry about the mess you need to clean. Oh well, burning a few calories I suppose.
Bonnie - gee that is major surgery, but you sound like you are at the point of wanting to go forward with it and so is your doctor. I will pray huge prayers for you Oct. 3 and before of course too and after. I too am having surgery in December - total hysterectomy due to a fibroid the size of a bowling ball. I didn't ask if it was a 5 pin or 10 pin ball emoticon
Take care.
Today I am only working this morning and then I have to see a dermatologist to follow up on some spots that I had frozen off. It healed great and I think it was just sun damage nothing more. Phewwww!
Have a super day everyone on your healthy journey.
Hi everyone! I'm back after a major computer breakdown.. then I seemed to have lost the chat thread!
If the earthquake last march wasn't bad enough, there was a major typhoon (hurricanes, I think they're called in the U.S.) come though. Lots & lots of damage. Once again, my family was safe. But the garbage i have to clean up today!
I am sure there are other components that are considered electrolytes, so I guess I should not play Dr. But whenever I hear potassium is out of line, that is what I think of. I am sure there is a reason he just told you those two things! You know me, sometimes I really think I do know everything! We all know that is a big joke!
Went to the surgeon this morning. He was asking me about the effects of the injections. I told him that they did help and had really helped with the pain in my legs. He began to talk about that, etc, and I pretty much just stopped him. I looked at him and said "I am 62 years old and in good health. If I am unable to exercise, I am not going to stay that way. My back is not going to heal on it's own, so I want the surgery." He looked at me and said, "You know this is a very big deal". I said yes I do, and I am willing to go through the pain, and do the work to get my life back. He said let me go out and look at your MRI once again. He came back in and said, "Yes, you need to have the surgery". I appreciate that he wanted to try to help me without cutting, actually, that gives me more confidence in him, but it is time.
I asked all of my questions and got all of my answers.
He also told me that in the past, he did not like to do this big of a surgery, however, he is finding that people that have what I will be having, often times do better than those with only 1 or 2 fusions.
He said he thinks it is because there is so much wrong with their backs, as with mine, that there is so much room to improve That the years of living with and working around so much pain and debilitation that the recovery, even though it is difficult, is not as bad for us.
I will be having surgery on Oct 3, at 9:00am. I am asking you all to put me on your prayer list, or just have a good thought for me for that day and time.
I have to go tomorrow and be fitted for a brace which I will wear for most of the time, for several months, I will have a machine with electrical impulses on under the brace to promote the healing. He will be cleaning out all of the crap that is in my lumbar region, crushed discs, bone spurs, arthritis, etc, then "decompressing" the holes that the nerves go through, actually straightening them and lining them up, so the nerves are not being bruised and damaged as they are now, and then putting the clean bone on top on each other, 4 of them, and putting "cages" and screws around them, to hold that all steady so that the bone will actually grow together. I will not bend very well at the waist anymore, but you are not supposed to do bending there anyway! I will have to learn the proper way to bend.
I will be in the hospital for 3 days, then perhaps 7 days in in patient rehab. After coming home, I will continue with out patient therapy. I am supposed to walk as much as I am able, of course beginning slowly to promote healing as well.
Anyway, my head is full of all of that stuff at the moment, so I guess I will stop and go to bed now.
God Bless and have a great day my friends.
Bonnie
Bonnie,
Thanks for straightening me out on what the doctor said. Now I will check out electrolytes and probably go buy some gatorade. I wonder why he just didn't say it's the electrolytes instead of talking about sodium and potassium. Go figure.
I had another episode last night that lasted about an hour, then went away. I did what the ER dr said to do and that was to just sit quiet, plus I took two baby aspirin. I guess I have to wait for approval from my insurance company before I get the heart monitor. My ankles are not swollen this morning so that is a good thing. Cutting back on water is working.
My haircut adventure turned out good and she took a lot of time cutting it. It is very short but not like a man-cut, kind of a bubble cut and easy to take care of. I got a lot of compliments on it and it feels good.
I found powdered milk at the local store down the street so I am good to go now. It was $6.55 for a box that makes 8 quarts!! The price sure skyrocketed! But now I have it so life is good.
Have a good day.
Just a quick stop in to say goodnight. My cell phone has been out since Friday but is finally working again. Who would have thought that we would get so dependent on cell phones, but there it is. Hope you all had a good day.
The things he told you that are out of whack, are the electrolytes! Sorry.
Just stopping in quickly to say goodnight. Having a pretty bad sinus headache, so not able to read the rest of the posts, just caught what you said quickly Brenda!
Surgeon in the morning, hopefully will have more info after that. Hoping the headache goes away, and is just weather related. Fingers crossed not an infection!
Have a good evening and a great day tomorrow my friends
Moby.
When I moved here last June I bought the microwave that belonged to the former tenant for $15 and it works great. It is a small one and is all I need. My other apartment had a built-in microwave. I was not going to buy one but after about a week I decided I can't live without one to re-heat my coffee. LOL I don't do much microwave cooking anymore.
Bonnie, Kelcie keeps telling me my electrolites are out of whack so I am sure you are both right. My doctor didn't say anything about them. I hope your back pain is getting more manageable with your injuctions and treatments. I just can't imagine the pain you are going through on a daily basis.
Kathy, don't worry that you are not here to post as much as you'd like to. We enjoy hearing from you when you have time.
I'm going to get my hair cut this morning then go check out a few stores in my search for powdered milk. I did notice that the Milkman brand had disapperared. I just wonder why it is so hard to find. Canned milk is not an option for me. They do have those little cartons of milk that sit on the store shelf and don't need refrigeration until opened but haven't seen any where I shop. We get them from the food bank occassionally and they aren't too bad on cereal. I never tried just drinking it.
Welcome to new and returning members.
Hello everyone.
I haven't been in here for a few days and I think it's because I haven't been doing well on my nutrition or my exercise for about a week. Or maybe I haven't been doing well because I haven't stopped in to see how all of you are doing. Either way I feel like I have backslid and I don't like it at all! I think that part of it is emotional -- the blues -- missing my hubby. And another part was that for a week I was super duper busy and didn't get my exercise in. It seems like one thing leads to another and before I know it I am slacking.
I have so much to catch up on so forgive me for not mentioning everyone by name. However, I did want to welcome Mike and welcome back Brightlight.
Lynn, you and your DH are in my prayers. emoticon I wish there was more that I could do. I'm glad you called the social worker for help. You need someone to talk to, bless your heart.
Oh! And RW, love those blue toe nails! emoticon
Nina
Together is better!
Hi there. I've been away for about 6 months from SP. I must admit I was off trying WW and it really isn't working for me. I just can't seem to get into their new program and the cost is a bit much. Hope you'll let me hang around here again. Good to see some familiar faces.
Good to see you. Know you are busy so just glad to know all is well. Have a wonderful weekend and celebration with your husband! Enjoy it so much.
MOBY
Well even a smaller microwave will be fun, seems like the longer they make them, the more they can do!
LOIS
Glad you are getting around in your car.
BRENDA
I am wondering if all of the stuff that happened to you was because your electrolytes are out of balance. Maybe because of cutting back on the salt as well as all of the water was all that is wrong. Fingers crossed. Hope you enjoyed your chicken!
I am fine today, back adjusted, check, massage therapy, done. Feeling pretty good today, priceless.
I probably missed someone, 'cause my eyes want to close, so just say sorry, and goodnight!
Brenda - I haven't looked for powdered milk, but I notice that basic staples aren't as common as they were when I was a kid. I picked up some unsweetened cocoa the other day, and there weren't any of the huge containers like Mom used to have.
I bought a new microwave today. The plan is to give the old one to my daughter, who is moving from a roommate situation to her own apartment. I'm going from 1.4 cubic feet, 1000 watts, to 0.9 cubic feet, 100 watts. It looks tiny, but it's big enough for me as a single person household.
Lois, You are so funny. They saw you coming, that's for sure, and thought to themselves, 'here comes a sucker, we'll stick it to her'. LOL What do they have to do, take them completely apart and re-make them? Well, at least it will make you happy so that is all that counts. I'm glad you got your car repaired cheaper than they origionally said. I hate having to ask for rides.
I have my car running very good now that I had my mechanic go through and fix everything that needed fixing so I don't need to worry about breaking down every time I go somewhere. My car sits most of the time because I don't have much of a social life (going places). I go grocery shopping a couple times a month and now I have these medical appointments. Tomorrow morning I am actually going to a beauty shop and have my hair cut then later stop by the hospital and have the mamagram. They do them Mon thru Fri between 1 and 2. It is a walk in office so it should go pretty fast.
Brenda, happy that you are getting everything checked out. It amazing what we do when we think we are taking care to our bodies. and then find out maybe not.
Now that I have my car I seem to be out and about almost every day. One thing I did today that even I am shaking my head. What was she thinking? Several years ago, probably seven or eight, I purchased two pairs of pants from Target. One was black and one was grey for the total price of $10 each ( they were on sale). I still have them and they are like new even though I have worn them a lot and still love them.. With the weight loss they are getting a little loose so I take them into a tailor shop. I am having them taken in for the price of $24.80 each. As I said, what was she thinking?
Sending good vibes out to everyone..
Hi All,
Well, I was a good girl and went to see my doctor this morning and found out that I am drinking too much water because my sodium and potassium are low. The excess water washes it all away and causes problems. So I am to cut my water intake in half, wait for the hospital to call so I can go in and be fitted with a heart monitor to wear for 24 hours. Next, get a mamagram and go back to my doctor in two weeks and they will do a thyroid test as the hospital didn't do one. Salt is not my problem so my cutting back on it and obsessing about it is obviously hurting me instead of helping me. So on the way home I stopped at Safeway and bought 8 pieces of fried chicken for breakfast because I had an early appointment and was starving. I ate two pieces and had a banana. My BP is fine and is not causing ringing in my ears so I won't worry about that anymore. I am just a worrier at heart, it seems.
Has anyone looked for powdered milk lately? Safeway has discontinued it. They only carried their brand. Now I have to go check a couple other stores because I want to have some on hand for when the cold winds blow and it is snowy and icy and I can't get down the hill and back up to go to the store.
I hope you all had a good weekend. I just took it easy and watched a couple of really good movies yesterday on AMC that I'd never seen.
Just stopping in to say hi and I've enjoyed catching up on reading what everyone is up to, lately. It's been busy for me: school, working out at the gym (4x ST and 5-6x cardio-I do try to run outside a couple of times a week, too) and work, of course. DH's birthday is Friday and we're heading to the family beach house in DE. I'm looking for a great restaurant to take him for his birthday dinner. Got some good recommendations, already!
Sorry I'm not commenting on individual goings on, just no time. :-/
Take care and have a great week!
Brenda I have the opposite problem. I am long waisted and have to buy them big or in the mens. And then the men's are too big in the arm pit area and a little bit of the sides of my bra show. I am still waiting for wallmart to open a new department for muffin top shapes and oddball shapes like mine. I think it would be a hit. I think there are more of us than models out there. LOL
IRONING? What's that? LOL
Ironing? I just reluctantly did some so I will have work clothes ready in the morning. Can I live wthout it? Absolutely!
SUE
I avoid ironing at all costs! I am left handed and when I was young, all we had were those crazy irons with the cord in the wrong place for me. I don't think I ever really learned to iron well, so that was part of it. Also, once I bumped that same cord, and the iron fell and burned the back of my left hand pretty badly. It was just before my prom in high school, and I remember that I had little white lacy gloves to wear, and it kind of hid the mark. Funny how something brings up an incident that you haven't thought of forever!
MARY
Have a great trip to NC. Enjoy yourself and good for you for taking your exercise clothes.
BRENDA
I also used to sew. In high school, I actually did some tailoring. I guess I was better with the iron than I thought. Don't do that anymore either. I crochet, that's about it for me!
LOIS
Sounds like such an uplifting and joyful day for you. So glad.
Last night, only got about 5 hours sleep again. So, 10 hrs in two nights. Hoping that the drugs have worn off from my procedure on Friday, and will be able to sleep more tonight.
Saw in the newspaper today that my old friend from work lost her sister, and they were at the viewing today. Really felt as though I should go, but between the tiredness and the headache, I did not feel as though I should drive. They say that when you are tired and/or don't feel well, you are as dangerous on the road as when you are drinking. It would have been about a 15 to 20 minute drive, so did not take the chance.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead. God Bless my friends
Kathy – yes, going to a Renaissance Festival is a unique experience but I love it. We did not dress up this year but have in the past. I think dressing up makes it even more fun. Our favorite act at the MN Ren Fest is Puke and Snot. The do the Ren Fests in Mpls, Larkspur, CO and will be in Annapolis, MD in October.
Sue – at first, it does take a push to make yourself go workout. I have found that now I really miss it if I can’t get in a workout or get in my walk.
I was very proud of myself today at the Ren Fest – I feel I did pretty good with the eating. I had a gyro and DH and I split an order of cheese curds and split a small bag of kettle corn. I thought that was pretty good. And we did lots of walking.
Tomorrow morning I have a 6 am flight to North Carolina for the week. Hopefully I can make good choices eating out all week. I’m packing workout clothes and my walking shoes and taking my exercise band with me. So hopefully I’ll get in some exercise.
I just got home a little while ago from an awesome Hymn Festival at my church. The Twin Cities American Guild of Organists' chapter was meeting at our church. Dr. Michael Burkhardt was the guest organist and choir director. Michael was a Director of Music from 1992-1994 at my church. I was in the choir at the time and he was a awesome musician and person. It was such a joy to see him again and hear him play the organ. Words cannot describe what he does with his talent. If when or where you every hear that Dr. Michael Burkhardt is presenting a concert, I strongly urge you not to miss it. Needless to say I am filled with joy from the experience. emoticon emoticon
Presently, he is Director of Worship and Fine Arts at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Livonia, Michigan and director of the Detroit Handbell Ensemble.
