Due to lovely Dolly, I had to opt for work out videos instead of my usual morning walk. The outer bands are dropping much needed rain on our area, and our yard and garden loves it.
I too love strenght training, because cardio takes much longer and is not as varied.

Your husband must be sweltering working outside with the temps in the mid to upper 90's. although if he's on the Eastern plains, I think they are getting some rain. We had "rain" yesterday - twice about 50 raindrops fell on our lawn.

Hope you both meet your goals while you're apart.

Living in Colorado where the humidity is so low, I have a portable "swamp cooler" which adds humidity to the air. It cools you (like standing in front of a fan wearing a wet T-shirt).

I enjoy strength training and hate cardio! I did the strength training this morning shortly after I got up...we had a 4 hour power failure and nothing else to do, lol. Then I found out how awful it was to be hot and sweaty with no A/C! At least it's done!

Thanks - I'm going to try to get at the strengthening today. You'd think 20 minutes three times a week is very little time involved with so much benefit. that should be motivating enough.

I get up early and walk 3 miles in the morning before it gets hot. Then I try to add another mile or two at night. I have to get in gear and consistently start strength training. It seems to be a struggle though I enjoy doing it with the tape I have.

Yep....our bodies change, just another one of life's jokes on us. But we keep on trying. I'm not giving up anytime soon.
I wake up at 5:55 AM to get to my 6:30 kickboxing class each morning. It is "my time" for myself before I start caring for my mom for the rest of the day.

You know, it's SO comforting to know that other people are going through the same things at the same time! Lynn, I started gaining in my late 40. Even though I gained 30 pounds I had no roll around the middle. Then I took slowly took the 30 pounds off at 52, and my body was SO different! I couldn't wear my 7's, or even 9's at 130. I wore a 10! And everything went 'south', too! Even worse was the roll around my middle, the pooch that was now my tummy---even with 3 children, 2 of which were C-sections, I had a flat tummy. It was so sad.

One of my sisters (3 are very much overweight and the youngest, at 43, is still thin) says, "Mirror, mirror, on the wall. I am my mother, after all!!"

Yup, yup. Finding that I have to work so much harder these days to see results is just a bit disheartening. Early menopause runs in my family, so around six years ago I started noticing a big difference in how hard I had to work at losing just a few pounds. It had all been so easy before! What was happening? And Now I Have Fat Around My Waist For The First Time! (Sorry, I know I capitalized the articles and short prepositions, all you grammar experts) I shake my head in disbelief. I have my mother's body...

Hats off to you, Maryam, if you can run down 12 flights of stairs...my short little legs give out around the 3rd set, lol! I've exercised consistently for 3 months and changed my eating habits and have only lost inches...but one day it will come off, I do believe.

Good afternoon all,

Jumping out of bed and starting exercise doesnít sound very healthy to me; the body needs time to wake up.
I know that if I rush in the morning then I get tired in the afternoon.
Exercising Ĺ-1 hr, after getting out of bed, give me more energy all day long.
About 10 years ago I lost 30kg (about 132 lbs) in 9 month by running down 7 floors 2 times a day 5 days a week. I didnít change my eating habits and that is properly why they came back on.
Now I have started to run down the stairs (12 floors) at least 2 times a week and have changed my eating habits. I can tell you that it works for me.

Wow, Lynn, to get up early and to have great temps! That's wonderful! We laugh because our weatherman will say something like 'It's 6:45am and it's ONLY 88 degrees--get geared up for a high of 98 today, with a 96% humidity!" And we still function, lol.

I know the key to success is to just 'do it' like Nike, but I don't know about getting up at 5 to exercise! I used to jump on the treadmill as soon as my feet hit the floor but gradually got into the coffee-newspaper-computer first trap. It's comforting and routine. Hmmmm, maybe I need to step out of that comfort zone!

This summer I've been really good about exercise. But since our daughter's wedding was on Saturday, I haven't done anything since Friday. Today I'm back to working out. I have about 3 weeks until we go back to working in our rooms....and I do plan on walking in the gym at lunch. I did that at the end of the year and felt like it gave me an afternoon pick-me-up. I also went up and down the stairs at times. Our classrooms are on the first floor and I'm the only one in my building most afternoons so there's no traffic on the stairs. I'll have to make up a routine and stick to it!

Mary, I'm with you about school starting. I can do pretty well leaving the food alone IF I put my mind to it. My biggest concern is lack of time or energy to keep up my workout habit that I'm trying to cultivate over the summer. I think my best bet is setting the alarm for 5 am and doing it first thing in the morning!

I had a wonderful bike ride this morning. 65 degrees, sunny and breeze from the north. I rode 14 miles in 85 minutes! Whew...rubber legs!

Your golf story is great, LYNNWYNN. It's just the sort of thing that SP says is the very best thing--find something you like and do it for your fitness. I wish I golfed. I took golf in college, but I was never very good. Bowling would be good for fitness, too. Now, if I could switch my golf score and my bowling score, that would really motivate me!

Someone on another thread mentioned golf as a fun way to exercise. We have a driving range really close...but I'm such a klutz! Is it hard to learn? My husband doesn't like golf at all, but I wonder if he'd run screaming if I suggested that we take lessons?

I'm worried about the "once-school-starts..." thing, too. I bring my own lunch and never have a problem with that, but I'm SO tired when I get home that exercise gets pushed to the back burner. I've been really consistent this summer compared to my usual lack of initiative and I have more resolve to keep pushing myself. But not seeing big results is still a factor.

Yesterday I thought I was going to have my typical Sunday rest day (I exercise 6 days a week right now--walking, Walk Away the Pounds DVD, bike riding) but my husband, son and brother-in-law invited me to play a round of golf with them after church. It was a GREAT workout. I have a pushcart (birthday gift from my hubby this month) so logged about 5.5 miles while pushing my clubs...not to mention all the strokes (132). It was pretty hot, so had lots of water to drink and snacked on a South Beach Snack Bar halfway through the round. Lots of fun! And a very different workout than usual...

Congratulations on keeping the weight off. That's impressive. I know you will be successful in loosing the last few pounds and so will we all. After all, we are committed and are working hard every day. My biggest worry is; since I am a teacher, that I will revert to my old eating habits once school starts back up. However, I am determined not to let that happen.

That has been the hardest for me as well - to remember I'm not young any more. Although I have to admit I feel better now than I did when I was younger. Because I eat better and I've been exercising now for about 20 years. I still struggle with maintaining my weight going up and down 10 lbs but back in the early 80's I lost 50 lbs and have kept 40 of them off. Now I'm ready to get rid of this 18 lbs (now 15.5) and KEEP them off.

Hello Nutsiam,

I too have increased my exercise and restructured my calorie intake, and it took me now almost 3 weeks and I finally started loosing weight. It is only one pound, but at least it is something. I just keep telling myself that it took a long time to put it all on, and I have to be patient.
I know it is frustrating, and the hardest part for me is to remember that I am not 25 anymore!

We all like to see the scale change but losing inches is quite motivating. Besides, if you keep going as you are, the pounds will have to leave.

Keep up the good work!

I am a little discouraged. I have been working out again at the gym, walking my dog everyday for 3 miles and eating within the guidelines and I have still not lost a pound. I know I have lost a little size around my waist, but really would like to see at least one pound gone in 2+ weeks. Is this typical???

Thanks. y'all! I more than made up for it last night---we had Mexican food for the rehearsal dinner! I know you're not supposed to go way under. It's been so crazy the last few days that I was eating a good breakfast, a light lunch, and then we just grabbed leftovers or whatever for dinner---not trying to really go under calories, it just worked out that way for a few days. But it would seem like that scale would move JUST a little, lol.

I know I still underestimate calories on the foods that aren't anywhere in the 'search' area and it all balances out eventually. I just want in in my favor once in a while!

But today's the wedding and I'm not worried about anything---well, I do want to not have to hold my tummy in in my dress, lol, but other than that, I'm just fine.

I'll let you know on Monday how things went.

Happy weekend to all, and do it right!

Hi Mary,
You should never go below 1200 it will make your body think there is a food crises and it will hold on to and grasp every calorie it comes across.
Muscles are heavier than fat so you might just have increased the muscles mass.
Keep up your good work
Congratulation on your daughter's wedding.

Even though I've been under 1200 calories the last few days and I've had all my water AND did all my exericises, the scale says I've gained a pound. I refuse to log that, lol!

Tonight is the rehearsal dinner and tomorrow is my daughter's wedding. My mother of the bride dress fits without Spankx, thank goodness, I feel fitter and better than when I started here, and that's a good thing. No significant weight loss, but some inches gone. I refuse to give up.....

HI,
I've read about the Bio-identicals and talked to a few women on them, I'd like to try them but haven't gotten it together yet. I think they help with those pesty "hot flashes". Perhaps you can do a google search for more info and a local resource. Cheaper than her book.
I worked hard this week and I managed to lose one lb, though my tracking shows I only lost .3. To everyone out there; "Don't give up, the scale will move eventually" emoticon

I always gain pounds and even sometimes inches when I increase my activity levels even when cutting calories. I used to get discouraged and go back to my old ways. This time I decided not to weigh myself for the first month. Not the recommended way of doing it but my motivation is staying high this time and I am enjoying the process more. I also gained weight since experiencing "peri-MentalPause and MentalPause". Ha. We just need to keep on keeping on.

Hi,
I am 61 and have lost over 40 pounds with a high mark at 196#.
My weight loss seem to be stuck at 155#. Think that I am not as consistant with my daily exercise.

Yes, I now also have rolls where my waist was.

I also have lost height (1 1/2 inches) and that has NOT helped.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
Fran

Welcome, Lynn! You've come to the right place. I LOVE the menostop comment---sad, but true. I was thin all my adult life but started gaining weight and inches in my mid 40's. You're so lucky that it's just been recently! I 'was' a perfect pear, but now I feel like a combo. One of my teacher friends who was overweight in her 20's said we could open a store called "Ap-pear-al" to help those of us with hard to fit bodies!

Wow! After reading all the posts, this is my new home. All kidding aside, I just joined SparkPeople this week. I'm 53 and finding it terribly hard to get my weight to budge. I've never had a problem with gaining weight around my waist until the past two years. I'm your perfect "pear shaped" person...no chest to speak of, small waist and carry nearly all my fat below the waist. UNTIL MENOPAUSE (or as my son calls it, "menoSTOP"). Now I've gained about 5 inches in my waist, and I don't even want to start with my upper arms. Gosh. But I've gotten myself some support (with all you, and my three sisters) and look forward to seeing results come...even if they come more slowly than I'd like. Which I'm sure they will. We CAN do it!

Has anyone tried bioidentical hormones to help with weight loos? I had dinner with a friend last night. He is on bioidentical hormones and suggested I look into this. We're both workout nuts and he was sympathizing with my high activity and seemingly broken scales!

I looked at the Suzanne Sommers books on Amazon. Has anyone read them?

As you can see my little grid below hasn't moved. I am hoping when I weigh this wednesday it will move some.

I think the only thing that has helped me NOT gain over the last three week (which included 4 birthday parties and the 4th of July holiday) is a 4 week challenge I've been doing. This is the last week. Does anyone know of another challenge that may be starting I can participate in? It has really helped me a LOT.

Thanks, Renee, and I hope your plateau goes away soon.

Let's adopt the "lords a-leaping" figure as our dancer until they come up with an official SP one!!

Sadly, I'm in the same situation. I love to dance but my DH doesn't like it at all. sigh. Good to hear that the inches are going. It's nice to see it on the scale, but it is much better to see it on the tape measurer.

I'm still stuck on my plateau. I can't seem to break it, although I must admit that I haven't increased intensity and time with my fitness exercises so I can't even blame anyone but myself!

Mary, congratulations to the Mother of the Bride! Enjoy the day!

I've always said that I can dance in my heart---when my husband of 35 years proposed he told me he had a confession to make: he HATED to dance! I was floored because we went dancing all the time. HA! He only did it because he knew I loved it. That should have been a deal breaker, lol, because we never go dancing. But our daughter's getting married Saturday night and he HAS to dance at least once with her and once with me.

He started walking 5-8 miles a day most days when I started SP in April. He hit 20 pounds down this morning and is SO proud, as I am. But no progress except inches for me. I'm SO glad you all can relate. It will happen eventually...

It sounds like a mantra it's our age and metabolism. I remember my dad saying, "Ah youth, it's wasted on the young". Ain't that the truth! I know that forcing down those 8 glasses of water everyday is what finally helped me to lose that first pound. The food tracker also is a great tool. Stay with it, you'll lose the weight.

I am woman. I am invincible. I am tired.
