Thank you all for the advise and personal experiences. I do know that aiming for smaller goals can me less "scary" to put it that way. My surprise is that the PT thinks the 70lb weight loss should be my ULTIMATE goal. I know once I'm there I will reevaluate, but it was the first time someone gave me a # less than 100. That is the shock.

Or even start smaller ~~ aim to lose 10% of your current weight and go from there. Just an idea....

I would honestly aim towards the 70lbs loss first, they are both big goals :) If you feel great at 195 and continue to maintain with the doctors approval, then you will know for yourself that you are healthy vs. what the number says. I personally felt incredible at 185lbs (I'm 5'5") and I think a healthy weight according to that BMI index for me is something like 146lbs. My goal is to get back down to 185. If I feel the need thereafter, we'll take it from there. Good Luck to you!

I was told somewhat of the same thing by my primary when I was was down 70 pounds he told me if I lost another 20 he would stay there instead of going down another by another 30 so it sounds realistic.

The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, a driver called Jesus, you will make it to a place called Success.

I agree with Declare ~~ maybe your PT is trying to break down your weight loss. I would suggest focusing on the smaller goal. Once you get there you can decide if you want to lose more. Have you talked to your doctor about a healthy weight?

Hi I wonder if PT is trying to give you a goal that is more achievable to boost your confidence - but in reality will shift the goal posts later - not sure I agree with that philosophy but it seems pretty common - personally you will be the best judge of where you should be when you get close to getting there

I had a PT last year and the year before one only wanted to focus on 10% of my current weight at a time - I lost nothing after a whole year following her program, the other believed getting to 99kgs (218lbs) would be a good longterm goal for me - I had to quit that program after 5mths due to a health crisis but hadn't lost anything and the PT after me seeing her 5days a week all that time still hadn't learned my name or even remembered I wasn't new so when I asked her to review my program and explained I was disappointed I hadn't lost she replied "It's only been a few weeks you'll need to give it time" I didn't renew my membership to the gym after my illness

I am 5foot11 and currently my goal is 172lbs or 78kgs this puts me a BMI of 25 which is apparently what we should all be aiming for - however I believe after reaching it I will be happy if I can maintain a weight between 80-85kgs for life based on experience of my own body - will see how I feel when I am there and how I look :-)

I completely agree with you Severina, I'm still a bit curious if others have had any similar situations. This is seriously the first time someone has told me that 150lbs is too low for me.

I have never had a personal trainer, nor have I ever been told just how much weight to lose. Honestly, though, I would see how you look and feel once you reach the first goal weight, then go from there. Good luck!

So my husband and I just got ourselves a personal trainer. We discussed our goals and I told her my ultimate goal is to loose 117lbs and she did all her math and what not and said a realistic goal for me would be to loose 70lbs. She said a 70 lb loss would put me at a healthy BMI and a 117lb loss would put me at an unhealthy weight considering my body frame. This is the first time someone's told me this. My goal weight has always been 150lbs and she tells me I should be aiming at 198lbs. I think that's too much, but in all reality I would love to hit the 199 mark and reevaluate from there. It just really tripped me up that she things my numbers would be that far off. Have any of your been told anything similar or that your ideal goal weight was that far off??
