I agree with that. I ate very little in high school because I 'had to stay thin'.

The media portrayals and my parents' constant comparison between me and my stepsister (no genetics in common at all; I have a larger frame, where she is more petite.)devastated me. It didn't matter that my doctor said I was only 5 pounds overweight for my build. My shame and low self-esteem was formed by what the scale said, my parents' criticisms, and society's "acceptable standards".

I've decided what is healthy for me. At 38, I know I won't get that 18-yr old body back. Let's face it, Ive had three kids. BUT, I will not let someone throw me into a mold anymore. I look at my high school photos and sure, I wish I was that thin. But I, too, do not use them for weight loss inspiration anymore. I look at them now and realize I was FINE how I was. I should have been able to accept and love myself more...I am still working on that to this day, but my "self" and I are better pals now. My 16-yr old daughter has been taught to ignore that mess and remember that people will love her for who she is; there's no standard she has to fit into to make someone else happy.

true-I used to have a picture on my fridge of me in a bikini, with toned arms and a somewhat flat stomach as my motivation-I took it down today because its from my senior trip in high school and I wasnt really healthy then either (diet pills) I would rather find a healthy goal to look forward to that embraces who I've become

I definitely think the images we see in the media distort our perspective of what 'fat' is. I worry because my teenage daughter is always saying she's fat, and she's so not! My vain side wants to be thin so I will be considered attractive, but my practical side just wants to FEEL better. Being healthy is really what we need to stress, and that means not too heavy or too thin!

I was insanely skinny in high school, at graduation I weighed 108 and I am 5 ft 8. Looking back now I was WAY too skinny!

Today I got caught up looking at old high school photographs. Boy, was I a thin one but I was an active dancer then too.

Anyway, as I looked at pictures of me back then I thought that too many people our age get caught up in the "I used to" frame of mind.

Today I declared that I don't care what I used to look like. I am concerned about what I look like and how I feel in the present. That being said, I think we all have the potential to put our younger selves to shame and actually look better than we ever have. emoticon
