It's a DVD by Jillian Michaels that features a short, segmented work out with varying levels of difficulty. It's based on using several parts of your body at once to burn the maximum amount of calories and also build strength. It's pretty decent and very affordable ($15 or so, if I remember correctly.)

I just realized tomorrow is weight in day! I wish I wouldn't have eaten like crap today!

So I went to the hardware store to buy the parts to make a heavy hula hoop and it ended up being more expensive to make one then buy one! So I went online and ordered one. I'm kinda of bummed since I hoped to use my newly made hula hoop to exercise this week :(

Hummus goes with Anything!

Put it on toast or crackers... or dip them. That way you get your whole grains at the same time! Any veggies are amazing. Snap peas, bell peppers (all colors), celery.. oh yum! Makes me want some hummus now!

Thanks for all the helpful tips!
I have noticed that eating breakfast every day has helped me not feel hungry all day. I also found that it really does take less food for me to feel satisfied.

I went out to eat Friday night and splurged on a chicken sandwich with teriyaki and pineapple. I cut it in half, and could only eat half of that. I was full!

Hummus: what do you dip in it? I don't like carrots with it, and fat-free pretzels take up too many of my calories. I love hummus, any suggestions?

Hi everybody! Okay so, I haven't been to this sparkteam in awhile, but I just wanted to let you guys know about a challenge in case any of you are interested. A fellow sparker and I are starting up a 21-day challenge this Monday, 1/25/10! We're trying to spread the word and see if anyone else is interested in participating...more people=more motivation! :) So please email me if you're interested, have questions, etc..and if you know other people that might be interested, don't hesitate to let them know too. We are DETERMINED to do this and to reach our goals once and for all, so if you're looking for some great support, you can definitely find it here! :)

Well, I've got 15 pounds to lose still. I would really LOVE to lose and hit my goal weight by Valentine's Day. I would like to start the maintenance stage at that point, but I don't know if I will hit that goal. I am working my butt off.... :)

SNACKS- Fruits and Veggies are great work snacks! If you've got refrigeration... hummus is amazing. Dried fruit is also great if you want to keep a "stock". Rice cakes and natural peanut butter (if you don't have a fridge, they have some that doesn't have to be refridgerated... I don't like it quite as much... but I haven't tried it recently- just when it first came out)

SWEETS- try sugar-free jello. Or sugar-free pudding! I have just discovered the power of portioning! It's so easy to make your pudding, and put it into four seperate containers (add a scoop of protein powder if you feel like adding some "oomph" to your snack) Also, I'll freeze it! That way it takes longer to eat... I find with sweets a little is more satisfying than you imagine... you just have to take your time eating it (SO HARD) so freezing it forces you to take your time :)

HUNGRY- You say it's your first day... were you eating way above your calorie intake? If so, you may have to take it slower than you want otherwise it will be easier to overeat (when you get super hungry). Also, check what you're eating. Add fiber to your nutrients and see how much you're getting each day. Protein and fiber are SO IMPORTANT at keeping you full. If you're not getting enough fiber check out the resources of how to get more... but a supplement is also a good start (if you're not eating enough fiber it can be really hard to figure out how to get enough!) OH! And take it slow. If your fiber is really low, don't jump it up over night... your stomach (and people around you), won't thank you. Remember- you can do it... just take it slow!

Good luck all! Keep it up!

~Erin~

I am so hungry!! I am on day two of counting my calories and I feel starved. I am drinking my water, but I already have a small bladder, so you can imaging how much more often I need to go.

Anyone have any good work snacks? Something portable, not stinky, that I can munch on at my desk?

And when will this hungry feeling start feeling better??

Hi there!
I love snacking as well and I've found some really healthy snacks I like! I love roasting chickpeas in the oven. You can use canned chickpeas, you just drain them, rinse them and then toss them in a little bit of olive oil, lemon juice and any spices you like (I like a combination of cumin, cinnamon, brown sugar or curry powder). Then bake them till they get brown and crispy!

I also love snacking on veggies and hummus.

I am also going to try jicama sometime this week, I heard about it on the biggest loser and they promote it as a substitute for chips! I'll let you know how it goes!

Also, for a sweet tooth, I make smoothies (plain yogurt, frozen berries, vanilla extract, a little bit of vanilla whey powder, and a little skim milk, you can skip the milk or add honey if it's not sweet enough)and instead of drinking it I put it in a bowl and eat it like ice cream! super yummy, healthy and satisfying!

Hope this helps!

Does anyone have any healthy snack ideas? My bf and I have been trying to lose weight but he is a big snacker and unless healthy ones are in the house and readily available, he will bring in junk food and chips. Also he really likes beer and I like my wine and candy. how do I get over the sugar cravings? they are killing me and I am weak :(

Hello!

I am 22 years old, and although I'm at a "healthy weight" I'd still like to get back down to my pre-college weight of 115.
I'm hoping to keep up with posting on here and reading everyone else's posts as well, I could use the motivation!
Have a great day!

My name is Meghan and live in beautiful British Columbia. I'm 29 and have two little kids, so life is busy! I've always struggled with my weight, but only about 15 pounds or so. Since having my second I've found it harder to lose the baby weight only because I have more obligations and I've been tired for almost a year :)
My body wants to but my mind is stuck in a bad routine of no exercise and too big portions, I also tend to eat my emotions instead of deal with them. I've been working out and I have more energy and have already lost more than five pounds, which I am very happy about. I have to make time to go to the gym so I put the baby to bed and I let hubby put our daughter to bed while i go to the gym about 3 nights a week.
I find it hard not to snack during the day because I'm home all day and night time can be deadly for a variety of reasons, so night workouts are really good because I can't eat big meals and I don't feel like eating when I get home at 8:30pm.
I would really like to be quite involved in this site as it helps me focus and talk with others who are doing the same thing.

There's a button under the nutrition information that says "add to meal planer." If you click it you can add the recipe to that day, or another day. You can always add each ingredient to your nutrition tracker, or enter your own recipe and then add that to your meal planner! Good luck!

P.S. Welcome!!!

Hey everyone! I'm 21 years old and will be mostly working out at home.

Is there a way to add recipes taken from SparkRecipes to my Meal Plan...?

I would rather choose my own meals based on the ingredients I already have but don't know how to add them to my nutrition tracker.

Thanks, and good luck!

hey everyone! I'm 21 and new to spark, trying to lose about 20-25 pounds. I got a stress fracture on the treadmill 2 weeks ago and am pretty much immobile for another 2 weeks :-/ but I've started to eat healthy this week so hopefully I'll make some progress anyway. I struggle with intense food issues, and am now at an all time high of 50 pounds above where I was 5 years ago, when I was underweight. I'm trying to overcome my horrific relationship with food, that's taken the last 4 years of my life (college-supposed to be the best years) that I've spent locked up in my room with food. I hope everyone is having a great first week after new years and know we can keep it up!!

Hi all!

I'm new to this team, so I just thought I'd say hello! I've noticed alot of you are runners... that's AMAZING for you... I always wanted to run... but I don't have the patience. (I get distracted... it doesn't work)
However... for those of you looking for a new program I totally LOVE LOVE LOVE TurboJam! It's super hardcore and will kick your butt. You'll love it, hate it, and become addicted to it (especially if you like kickboxing and dancing).

All for now!

I was in the same boat. Its all about eating the right foods, no more junk food or sweets, and exercise! I've had to bump up my routine in the last couple of months. I now do cardio 5x per week and weight training 3x per week. I was just doing cardio and not losing any weight, now the pounds are coming off. also, try new types of physical activity. your body gets used to things quickly. try a new cardio machine, yoga, kick boxing, or just really rev up your current routine.

Hi guys,
I joined about 2 weeks ago and keep getting pestered to write something so thought I should :)
I'm Becci - I live in New Zealand and I'm 22. This year's been a bit stressful and what with full-time uni, part-time job and a 3 year old to look after I have put on a bit of weight that I can't seem to get rid of! My avg. cal's per week is well under my BMR (+ exercise) but I don't seem to be losing any weight - any advice??

Just a little tip. I swell up like a balloon and gain anywhere from 2-5 lbs. so I find if you drink cranberry juice when you know it's almost time and while you actually have your period it helps flush some of that water out. I like the ocean spray diet or the natures best cranberry. Watch the sugar content. hope this helps. Just remember you crave terrible foods around that time your body wants salt and sugar to hold onto water it's all about retraining your body.

Well it depends on how much you went over on your calories for one. But when you're on your period you do tend to hold onto some extra waterweight. I always notice that I feel bloated and am a little heavier whenever I'm around my period.

So yesterday I was browsing Netflix and discovered that there is a sports/fitness section. I'm excited now to try out some new workouts. Yesterday I did some kickboxing (which more or less kicked MY butt!) and today I did a salsa dancing one before going for a run. I'm excited for this change of pace and I hope this is what I needed to get off this darn plateau I've been stuck in! :)

Sorry if this is TMI, but I'm on my period and can't tell if "that time" is messing with my scale or if I have hit a plateu or if the fact that I went over my calories 2 times this weekend did it but I'm annoyed!!! I have been losing 2 pounds a week consistently and then the week before my period I stayed the exact same weight for 7 days. then my period began and I'm up 3 pounds. I hate to belive that going over my calories 2 times could have caused 3 pounds to come back! Is period weight gain normal? If so, how much? Thanks everyone!

I know what you mean, I live in Edmonton too. luckily it hasn't been too cold yet. I have the 30 day shred dvd, I bought it about 6 months ago. I do like it, but i find that my house is a little small. do you do it everyday? it was a challenge for me- I did it 2-3x/week for about 1-2 months.

Jaygurl17 you could try getting a heart rate monitor. I have one and I think that it is pretty accurate in measuring how many calories I burn. It goes off age, weight, and heart rate which is a measure of your effort. The same exercise isn't going to require the same amount of effort for everyone so the calorie burn isn't going to be the same.

So glad you said that!!! I'm new as well... first day new. I am 28 and all of a sudden it seems impossible to keep my weight where it should be. I can't wait to start the program. emoticon

Hey Emily,
Just took a look at your post and I totally get what you mean about feeling gross in this kind of weather. I live in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) so it's pretty chilly here often. I don't like to go out to the gym for my workouts, instead I use this great DVD called 30 day Shred by Jillian Michales and I also have her book called "Making the Cut". I thought that this might interest you :)

I think braces in your 20s are fine. A few years with braces is better than a lifetime of wonky teeth. When I get insurance (eventually), I'm going to look into getting braces or maybe invisalign if that would fix my problem. If you really are considering braces, go with clear brackets.

The time that you run it in doesn't really matter. What is important for you is the distance, your weight, and muscle mass. 2.25 miles for someone that weighs 150 pounds is usually 225 calories burned. If you weigh more, you'll burn slightly more. If you weigh less, you'll burn less. And if you have a lot of muscle, you'll burn more. Also, if your running route included hills, you burn more calories. I think spark people has a way of inputing your own calories burned. What I do is just take the number of miles I ran and multiply it by 100. It's much more accurate than SP's system.
