Yep- I'm signed up for the CASI 5k on the 12th. I also found a website that lists all the road races (it claims) in Iowa. It has a really extensive list anyway. I think this may be the link to the page for April 2011, since that's the page I was looking at when I bookmarked it, but you can access the other months too.

Anyone doing CASI's 29th Annual S. Patrick's Day race? It's on March 12 in downtown Davenport. There's a 1 mile Family Fun Run/Walk and a 5K Road Race.

I have a question that may be stupid. If it's a 5K Road Race, can I still walk it?

Awesome! I'm planning to wear my orange SP shirt on Saturday. Hopefully the wind will have died down by Saturday, or at least give us a rockin' tailwind during the race! emoticon

I don't know of any 10k's around this area. I am running my first half marathon 3 weeks from yesterday. I have been running my long runs early Sunday mornings starting at the Celebration Belle and heading toward East Moline. My hubby follows me on his bike. yesterday's run was 11 miles and the next 2 weeks 12 miles each time. Three weeks is showtime! The Quad Cities Marathon starting down by the iWireless Center and crossing over into Davenport and Bettendorf over the I74 bridge. Then we head back to Illinois over the Rock Island Arsenal Bridge. i cannot wait!

If anyone's looking for a local race coming up, I think this one sounds interesting: www.lagomarcinos.com/

I really enjoy running 5k races, though I think I'm ready to step it up and try a 10K sometime. Anyone know of 10K races in the next few months?

Margie, you asked for it...you got it!!!! I guess I did not tell you that I am a Master Googler! This is dated many moons ago and is from the Times.

Sudden illness claims Bix pioneer Nancy Kapheim, 55

The Quad-Cities has lost a respected friend of the running community whose passion for running was as boundless as her energy.

Nancy Marie Kapheim, 55, the president of the Cornbelt Running Club and an assistant race director for the Quad-City Times Bix 7, died unexpectedly Saturday in her Davenport home after a brief illness. She would have turned 56 on Thursday.

Her death has stunned runners who loved her for her tireless enthusiasm for the sport, dedication and friendship.

"She just ran the Chicago Marathon in October," said Ed Froehlich, the director of the Bix 7. "Running was her life." Froehlich, who had known

Kapheim for 25 years, said she was involved in "every local race in the community."

"She was just a wonderful person; a loving, giving person," he said.

Kapheim was named the assistant director of the Bix 7 in July 2001. Her responsibilities included speaking in the community and representing the road race at conferences. She had run 22 Bix 7 races, including in 1987, when she was the women's master champion.

Among the people

mourning her loss are Cornbelt Running Club members Phil and Eloise Caldwell, Davenport.

"We first met Nancy at the Saturday morning fun runs at the Rock Island Arsenal in the late 1970s," Phil Caldwell said. "They were informal, low-key events where fellowship was more important then winning. Even then, Nancy showed the energy and determination that would serve her well as the longtime president for our Cornbelt Running Club.

"Nancy was the glue that held our club together," he said. "To hear her name read before the next Memorial Classic race will be so very sad."

Karl Ungurean, the vice president of the Cornbelt Running Club, said Kapheim was a "very dedicated person. And she did everything possible for the running community.

"She put an awful lot of time in to make the club what it is."

She was a serious runner, too, Ungurean said.

"We went to Chicago for a marathon, and she had a lot of training," he said. "I was training, and I ran about five miles a week."

Ungurean passed Kapheim during the marathon. "Later on, she didn't talk to me for several weeks. She trained and I didn't, and I passed her. She was mad at herself that she couldn't do it."

Former Cornbelt board member Tom DeClerck, Coal Valley, Ill., said the club was Kapheim's passion.

"What people don't realize is that when you agree to be a board member or an officer, you pretty much give up your running and racing activities. Nancy sacrificed her own running; she'd be running at 10 or 11 o'clock at night."

DeClerck remembers celebrating Kapheim's Christmas Eve birthday, attending national running conventions with Kapheim and running marathons.

"She was just a fun person to be around," he said. "She just had a burning desire to build the Cornbelt Running Club into a nationally known club, and I think she did that. I'm going to miss her."

So will Mabel Velge, Rock Island, a lifetime Cornbelt member and former board member.

"She's irreplaceable," Velge said.

Velge, who is retired from the Rock Island Arsenal, remembers seeing Kapheim running at the Arsenal when Velge was coming and going to work.

"She was the Cornbelt Running Club," Velge said. "I never knew how she could fit everything into her day."

Kapheim had lost her mother a few years ago.

"I was kind of like a mother to Nancy," Velge said. "Her cards were signed, ‘Your daughter, Nancy.' If she ever needed to talk, I was there for her."

Kapheim encouraged Velge to run in the Boston Marathon for her 70th birthday.

"We had a lot of good trips together to different runs and conventions and things like that," she said. "It'll never be the same not having Nancy. We were very close."

"She was one of the sweetest people on this Earth," said Dan Hayes, the director of communications for Lee Enterprises Inc. and former the editor of the Quad-City Times. "I never heard Nancy say anything about anybody that wasn't nice."

Kapheim, a veteran of many marathons, earned the 1993 Scott Hamilton Award, which is given to the top Road Runners Club of America club president. Kapheim also served many years as the race director of the Quad-City Distance Classic. She coordinated weekly track workouts during spring and summer for members and nonmembers at every level of running.

She was the secretary to the chief of staff at the Rock Island Arsenal.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Davenport, Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, where further arrangements are pending.

Are there any race or walk events coming up in our are that you participating in? Right now there is a Walk for Life event September 19 that I am seriously considering.

Then on October 24 I will be participating in the Des Moines Race for the Cure with my daughter. We do it for my Mom who past away in 2008 from breast cancer. This will be the first year that I will actually PARTICPATE in the race and will be 5K #2 for me.

Anyone thinking about other races or walks?
