I remember as a little elementary school kid following along to my mom's recorded from TV exercise tapes with three people who rotated on varying height round platforms. Don't know what that show was called, but I'm sure I'd laugh if I saw it now. The first exercise videos I bought myself were TurboJam live (the full set was to expensive for me as a college student). I still use them to this day. Sometimes it's nice to know the choreography. Though I don't think they are as much of a challenge now.

Oh happy thoughts! emoticon

I swam and danced as a kid, but I'm a latecomer to "working out". Mine was Tony Horton's 10 Minute Trainer. I tried walking, which I love, but it took too much time to get the calorie burn I needed. I hated exercise then but figured I could commit to 10 minutes a day. Now I'm at least 60 minutes a day, and have a whole collection of DVDs and a set of dumbells and kettlebells, because my main hurdle to exercise is when it gets boring.

Good question. In the olden days Jack LaLanne would start his tv show by saying something like: "Kids, get your moms, it's time to get off the sofa and exercise!" So the bug bit me back then, and that was before kindergarden.
After college (70s) I learned body building since it was trendy, remember Lisa Lyons? I joined a gym for that. I also took Rockersize classes with Lori Eastside which was tumbling, hip hop and jazz. She is a film and video choreographer.
In the 80s I first joined a local bodybuilding gym, then joined another gym that had tons of aerobics classes.
As for dvds and videos the only program I really followed was T-Tapp, and I still use it today.

"You are done eating for the day." Richard Simmons

I think my first was Cosmopolitan Tonetics, ugh. I'm glad those days are over! The video that got me started being a fitness video addict was the Keli Roberts step video that came with the little home step. I think it's the only video (VHS) I literally wore out.

A Leslie Sansone ON CASSETTE TAPE WITH MY WALKMAN to have a nice walk in the park. This morning, I did one of her great 3 mile walks. Put my HRM on and burned over 500 calories - so happy that I can get a high calorie burn doing low-impact/walking. No more jumping w/these knees.

Something by Daisy Fuentes that a friend gave to me. I think it's still somewhere in my basement, but it's on VHS. Yuck!

What truly got me started, though, was The Method's Pilates: Target Specifics (Jennifer Kries). That also happens to be the one that I did part of this morning. emoticon

I'm with the Jack Lalane crowd. That's my first memory of exercise. I think I watched it for the dogs. As kids back then, our play was exercise - riding bikes, hopscotch, running, etc. That was back in the stone ages before video games were invented.

As an adult, I think I realized exercise could be fun when I saw an exercise program on cable (have no idea who it was), but they were exercising with hip-hop moves. I desparately wanted to learn that. About that time, I also got into strength training and fell in love with that.

Tae Bo Cardio with Billy Blanks. I thought it was so tough and it took me 3 tries to get through the entire video.

Then about 5 months later and AFTER Jillian Michaels, I did it again and it was such a breeze and I thought "Wow, really? I was wheezing at this?"

Hahaha!

I am a work in progress.

It started with Mousersize (that gal had the CUTEST workout clothes), then I graduated to Jane Fonda's original workout on a record and then it was on to the Firm Volume 1 on VHS. I still have that workout tape somewhere around here. It is practically an antique!

Yup - my mom did Jack LaLane too! Early 60's! He's been around forever!

When we were in grade school we worked out to a record called "Chicken Fat" in Phy Ed.

But my first work out video - a VHS of course, was a Kathy Smith one. Can remember if it was the Weight Loss one or her pregnancy one. I loved them! I don't have a ton of DVD's now, but I don't mind doing them over and over and now my girls do them with me! :)

The first time I really 'worked out' (outside of swimming, bike riding, ballet & jazz classes when I was a child to teen) was in college. One of my roommates and I decided to 'get in shape', and a guy we knew gave us a list of exercises and showed us how to do them. I still remember the first time we did lunges, we did a ton of them and could barely get up out of a chair the next day, we were in such pain! To this day, whenever I do lunges I think of that college roommate and the guy who was our 'personal trainer'. emoticon

But the first video I ever bought was a Jane Fonda workout - it was the first one she did that was low-impact aerobics.

My first instructor-lead workout was a Jane Fonda DOUBLE ALBUM ON VINYL! I remember standing in my bedroom with my head down between my feet pulsing my arms out to my sides and up toward the ceiling - I'm sure I got it wrong, but that's what happens when you start exercising BEFORE THEY INVENTED VHS!!! Yikes! But it got me hooked - I've been a group fitness instructor for 25 years now (am not all that ancient - although 44 may sound ancient to some of you!!) LOL

I think the first workout tape I ever purchased was a Jane Fonda tape. Then soon after that I got Kathy Smith's Step Aerobics tape and I really liked that one alot! Wore it out, I played it so much.

This was in the early 1990s.

One of the first workouts I ever did was swimming laps in a pool. However, the first video must have been a Richard Simmons even before his Sweatn' To The Oldies like one with situps and push ups! I still love Richard and all the DVD's. I now also love Leslie's DVDs and any Dancing DVD's.

It was one of Denise Austin's first VHS tapes. It was called 'Low-Impact Aerobics' I think. It was released a few times under different names. Totally 80's with the cheesy background and music. I did it every day after school my freshman year of high school.

My second was Sweatin' to the Oldies. I still do that one on occasion and it always puts me in a good mood. I just love Richard!

The workout that hooked me was Denise Austin's Complete Workout on VHS. I didn't play many sports in school and gym class was a joke, so this was the first time I really pushed myself physically. My lower body was so sore, I could barely walk up and down the stairs. I LOVED it!

The first workout tape that turned me into the dvd junkie I am today was Veena & Neena's Bellydance Basic Dance. I got it when I was in high school and loved it. It grew into a good collection of bellydance workout tapes and then from there it turned into the diverse collection of DVD's I have today.

It was 3 chicks in skimpy "Let's Get Physical" outfits and they were on a dais that spun around. I practically had to knock my older brother out of the way to exercise (he was gawking) :D

After watching my mom do it all the time, I finally tried The Firm - it was old school, I think Body Sculpting Basics Volume 1 with Susan Harris. She's pretty ridiculous. ("Now isn't this better than dieting!?")

I also did the express workout with Susan Harris and Kai Suramaiken (Sooo not sure about that spelling).

I must have been 12. But you know what, years later I bought both of those on DVD, and they got me back into working out.

Today was my first day of INSANITY and it wouldn't be possible without those early, cheesy FIRM tapes. And years of inspiration from a fit mom!

Fun topic!

Serenity I remember the 20 Minute Workout. I still have a few episodes on VHS that we recorded from TV. LOL

I started working out in around 1998. I walked in the March of Dimes walk I and was sore for like a week afterwards. I figured if it hurt me that bad I needed to exercise more so I joined the gym.

I think the first workout that got me addicted to DVDs was Tae Bo. The funny thing is now I can't stand anything that even reminds me of Tae Bo or Billy Blanks.

I remember my older sister had a set of 5 pound handweights that came with a poster of several different exercises. I think that was my first workout, along with dancing to music on the radio.

I played a variety of sports when I was younger, but using those weights is the first time I remember exercising for the sake of exercise and actually taking it seriously.

Running...Our jr. high track coach would take the team out on the bus (seemingly) miles from school and make us run back while he followed us on the bus. I can remember my friends complaining and stopping, but I loved it! It was such a thrill to be outdoors running when everyone else was in class! For me, that was it. I've been hooked ever since.

emoticon Hi everyone. The first excercise tape I ever did was: 'Sweating to the Oldies' with Richard Simons. It was upbeat, and this gentleman was so entertaining and his group included folks in a variety of sizes (not just those slim and fit)so I felt I fit in and they all looked like they were enjoying themselves - so I just joined in and had a blast. That was the beginning.

The thing that got me really hooked was when they put in a weight machine room at my school. I was in like 4th or 5th grade and we were allowed to use it as long as it was during class and we had a teacher supervising. I LOVE lifting. I don't even remember the first exercise video/DVD I ever did. I know it was something on VHS and I probably borrowed it from my mom or stepmom back in the early 90s.
I've been walking since I was a kid. I grew up in a small town and my parents love to walk and ride bikes so we used to do it a lot. Actually, I spent most of my childhood outside riding bikes, playing baseball or softball, basketball, on the swings or just running around in the sprinklers when it was hot and we couldn't get to the pool.

What was the first workout you did or the one that got you addicted to exercise?

When I think back, I think it was the "20 Minute Workout" program that used to be on in the 80s on TV. I loved that program and would do it all the time. LOL
