I understand the kids. With three in college and a high schooler, and 3rd grader it's all over the place with their sleep. The hard part for me is my husband is a night owl, so I am tempted to stay up, but then I pay dearly for it later. So, I've had to start there, getting myself to bed between 10 and 11 so I can start my day between 7 and 7:30. Today I hit 23 minutes on the ski machine! That's 3.5 miles and 513 calories!!!! I feel like I did before I had my kids, energetic, strong, and happy :) Wish I had done this years ago. I never knew I could regain strength like this, I thought (everyone said) once you have teens you'll always be tired. Not true!

Here is the real truth...from Ps 103; Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgives all thine iniquities; who heals all thy diseases; Who redeems thy life from destruction; who crowns thee with loving kindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

I feel like a kid again!

I am having a lot of trouble getting to exercise first in the morning. Some of my kids wake up early and some go to bed late so I am not getting to sleep early enough to rise with any energy. However I have exercised everyday for the past week by just fitting it in when I can. I will have to see how that continues.

Thank you for sharing that! I had planned to give morning exercise yet another try but just haven't done day 1. We were given a treadmill so I have not excuse. Tomorrow is the day to start.

I dreaded exercising first thing in the morning too, but I decided to do it last month, and now 6 weeks later, IT FEELS GREAT! As I regretfully said goodby to my swimming pool, I pulled out the ski machine, started with 5 min a day for a week, and then added 2 min a week. Today I did 21 minutes which is equal to 3 miles. I never thought I could. And I can't remember when I have felt this good, maybe back in college! So, give it a try. It can't hurt, and you have a lot to gain.

Thanks for the dance idea, Val! I'll use that the next time I have a shorter time-block before supper and no time to organize anything or put an exercise DVD on!

I never have done much indoor exercise with the kiddos. One winter when they were younger and more wiggley I would put on a couple of upbeat songs and have everyone dance through them. We would take turns leading the dance moves. That was more crowd management than exercise with a purpose. emoticon

My 3 older kids (12,15,16) do an exercise program together most mornings. It is a bootcamp style body weight exercise program put out online by the Tapp brothers. Much too intense for me! I believe that they got into daily exercise because they saw mom and dad doing it everyday.

Anyone ever use "stations" for exercising with a great quantity of children? If so, what are some of your "station" ideas for inside in the winter?

I've been doing well since the New Year. I don't get to work out every day, but several days per week are better than the zero I was doing before :-) I usually do a 10 Minute Solutions DVD.

I'm pretty frustrated with myself- I had asked for the Sparkpeople activity tracker for Christmas, and lost it within days. I still haven't found it :-(

How is everyone doing with winter exercise?

I recommitted to strength training and have consistently been exercising 30 minutes a day since the beginning of December. I am feeling great. A little sore but great. I am using JessicaSmithTV on youtube and really enjoy it.

Ideally I would like to exercise first thing in the morning but just dread the idea. I am going to give it another go and see if I can get used to it.

I have had a slow start to my winter exercise plan. The video I liked got taken off of Youtube and the weather got a little better so I have been out for some power walks. That is really a low standard for exercise for me.

Like Val mentioned strength training is important but hard to fit in! However I think that it may be more of a key ingredient than I want to admit. When I strength train even 10 minutes a day I feel better, have more energy, am less likely to injure myself, maintain my weight more easily, and look better. Why don't I do it!

I am going to prayerfully recommit to daily strength training!

I need to up my strength training, too! I know people say "prioritize it and you'll find time for it." But I still find it hard to fit it in along with cardio! I'm thinking of looking into video workouts that combine cardio and strength in one session.

I recently found the 10 minute cardio videos here on SP. I love the jumping one. I am blessed to have a membership to our YMCA, which is just around the corner from where I live. I really need to boost my strength training though. I am much more of a cardio person.

Hi, Thank you for all the great sugestions! I checked them all out and I found a routine that I like. I have done it twice.

I am doing a 20 minute walk at home video by Sansone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3CyKZzx6h4 I just add some jogging and bounce and find that it gives me a nice workout. After the video I do 2 strength training exercises (4 sets each). I hate ST but I can get through about 8 minutes a day.I am usings Gorge Cruise's book '8 Minutes in the Morning' for the exercises. Then I stretch. It takes 30 minutes.

Val, I liked the step box idea too. I have a step and was considering adding that into my Sansone workout when it gets too easy.Great idea!

I have a step-stool like boxy thing and I like to design my own step routines. I got some ideas off of some step routine DVDs, but I've got my favorites. It's relatively quiet, so I don't wake the kids up if they're sleeping. I also like to jump rope/run stairs (which is REALLY VIGOROUS!) and do a certain number of sets of those. No DVD required. If you have steps at your house.

This may sound silly, but I LOVE dancing! So I turn on music and pretend I'm a ballerina or a country line dancer or some other something silly. . . I've had zero success with the Latin/zumba moves. But I think I could have danced the minuet pretty well if I had lived in Bach's day! This is great to do on a rainy/gray/snowy day.

Thanks! I found the 10 minute solution videos on Youtube. I used to do those videos a few winters ago when they were on Netflix but they weren't renewed.

I often use the 10 Minute Solutions dvds. You might be able to find them or other workout dvds at your library.

I also like to hula hoop, which you may or may not have room for in your house.

It is snowing! Even though I am a northern girl from generations past I don't like the cold. My last name means father-skier which is ironic because I have never wanted to ski.

I am trying to come up with a winter indoor exercise plan. Does anyone have any suggestions or favorite routines that you could share?I have time for about 30min per day if I get up on time. emoticon

The rest of the year I enjoy walking or hiking for exercise. I don't have any equipment to use except for hand weights and I don't have the freedom (or money) to go to the gym at this stage in life. I have been looking at exercise videos on Youtube. The Be fit channel has a ton.
