I so hear you. This is the first summer that my son is working and I have three of the children one week at a time going to Grandparents. This is a whole new adventure of planning.

When my kids were little we used to start when the weather got too hot and humid and nasty for anyone to want to be outside and tempers were getting short from being cooped up inside. Then we'd take a long break (1-2 weeks) in Sept. when the weather was fabulous. At times I miss those days when we could choose our own schedule and go with the flow or schedule 6 weeks on/1 week off.

Once they are in high school, it's harder...so much to work around...co-op schedules, teen work schedule, week-long visits to grandparents, 4-H fair, etc., plus you have to get 80% of the textbook done or 150 hours of instruction time done to count the credit. So, some of our subjects go nearly year-long, others are done within the mandatory 180 days, while others sooner.

Flexibility is key to homeschooling, that's for sure!

Enjoy your new school year!! emoticon

Blessings,
Heidi

We just finished LAST year on June 30. That is extremely late for us, but we had a really rough start to the year with illnesses, deaths in the family, travels, you name it. I usually start on August 1, but I'm not sure that anyone is going to want to be back in school in three weeks. Regardless, I always start with a light schedule and add things as we go. It seems to work a little better for us to ease into it, rather than starting with a full schedule right off the bat.

My DD wants to finish school this year, so right after she finished 11th grade a week ago, she started right in on 12th. She hopes to be done by the end of 2012. DS, on the other hand, will be taking a short break. We follow the German school year for the most part. That means that school isn't out for 2 more weeks here. Then it starts on September 3rd again.

Fit in little bits through out the day. You don't have to do it all. Good luck as you start back in! Make sure that if you feel over whelmed that you just stop and have everyone pray.

So we school year round and tomorrow we start back. I am only half ready. I feel so busy right now that I'm not sure how school is going to fit back in. I thought about waiting until August but that would throw off my whole schedule for the year.
