Unfortunately, it was what we tried and it left us viewing the program as dry and textbook like rather than being full of living books. It slighted us from ever wanting to "waste" money on their program again.

I've heard from a lot of peple that ECC isn't like the "history" programs and that the history ones are much better.

I was incredibly excited about using My father's world last year. I had heard so many positive reviews. We tried the exploring continents and countries collection. I found their collection of books doesn't fit us as well as I would like.

PS We are doing year one this year about cultures and civilizations which is going to be AWESOME! My ten year old has no idea about the world around us as we've been studying ancient, middle, and American history only the past few years.

Yay, Happy4help, we use My Fathers World too. I had always wanted to try it and we half-way did it last year but we had too many extra activities and subjects to let it be as easy as it should be. This year we are Only doing MFW and trying to declutter our school days. Of course now I'm addicted to going to the gym 5 days a week and I'm not sure yet how to handle that :)

One last answer to a post: We started the 5 year circuit of My Father's World 2 years ago. We will be starting the Medieval age this year. And they actually use Streams of Civilization and Story of the World as part of their curriculum. They also do a great job of lining Creation- Greeks and then the Rome information to the Bible. It is really fun.

I would also like to comment on Pa History. As far as I understand and my evaluator confirmed Pa history only has to be covered one year in slight depth at elementary and then one year a little deeper at high school level. Susan Kemmerer,Schoolhouse Publishing, has a great resource for this. My children and I really enjoyed the elementary work. Have not tried the HS.

Streams of Civilization is a traditional history textbook with Christian worldview. We really enjoyed the facts from this viewpoint. Story of the World is a story format of history with as neutral as possible worldview. I have used both and really enjoy both. You can use Story of the World as a curriculum in itself or as a compliment to whatever you do. The first time when my children were younger elem. we worked through them as a family just reading them together. Now my children are reading them independently again and we also will be using them with the Father's World curriculum as part of the years work. Hope this is timely enough and helps.

I also had not heard of streams of civilization. After doing a brief search it does seem that the 2 texts should be similar, but i can't say for certain as i have never finished the first and have never touched the latter. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has looked at both of them. Maybe someone i our group of 750 has looked t them both!

I haven't heard of Streams of Civilization, so I can't say for sure. The Story of the World is setup like a chapter book. You simply read the lessons - out loud preferably. Then it has a Workbook that is full of ideas for activities, review questions, additional reading ideas, etc. You can use the one book to make as many copies as you need within your family. There is also a test booklet if you want to have tests over each chapter.

Hope this helps.

Is Story of the World similar to Streams of Civilization?

We've used all four Story of the World books. The first one is wonderful. The second one pretty good. But with the last two, I get the feeling that they were rushing to get them published. There are grammatical errors, and they are sometimes just tedious to read because of poor wording. I hope they put out a second edition of those so that they can make them as good as the first ones.

I must have done something wrong when I tried story of the world. My children hid when I tried that one. They much preferred the history of US, which is probably why I keep going back to American history review.... I am so glad to hear that MetsFanWife and Yendu's children are enjoying the series!

Paliz and Mama, how interesting tha you interpert the law in the same state so differently.....

I am so happy to see responses coming up on this thread!

We just finished Ancient History with The Story of the World. Next year we are all doing The Middle Ages using Simply Charlotte Mason material. I am using The Story of the World to supplement - this gives me many options for all the different age groups. Also the SCM material includes geography that follows the time period and Bible studies - so your schedule is almost written for you! Seems very easy.

We will also be doing State studies throughout the year - lapbooks and various writing assignments will cover them. We will be doing Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas this year. We are intending to cover all of the states the girls have lived in, but focusing on Oklahoma to cover what the state needs here. Technically, we covered PA when we went through American History two years ago, but we didn't get detailed about it - just covered how the state was involved in the Revolution.

I love Gettysburg! I'm in Erie, so it is quite a trip, but we've managed visit there 3 out of the past 5 years.

Pennsylvania homeschool law is rather ambiguous, but I've always interpreted it (as has my evaluator) that you only need to cover PA History at least once in their schooling, not every single year. Usually at some point there is a PA History class at our Co-op, and I just count that.

We have to cover state history every year emoticon Last year we used the battle of Gettysburg to cover that requirement, lol. We are only 20 minutes from the battlefield so that was rather easy. This year I'm thinking of using Heros of History: William Penn and the unit study to go with the book to cover state history. We are also going to finish up Guest Hollows American History 2 (we are up to the roaring 20's) and after that I'm not sure what we will be doing.

I am always so tempted by Sonlight, but my history with curriculum that is already gathered together for me is not that great.

For now as a group we are reviewing American history. We try to do some American history review every year around this time through the month of July. The middle 2 are really picking up on history facts this year and it is making it more enjoyable.

I'm doing American History with a 9th grader and Eastern Hemisphere with a 6th grader. We use Sonlight, which I'm not really sure qualifies as a box curriculum. We love it!

This year we'll cover ancient history. We're very excited about it. We have a box curriculum, but I always throw in other things, making it eclectic, and because it's cohesive with the rest of our studies, it can be considered unit as well. =) don't you just love homeschooling?

History... Which type of history are you covering this year with your children? Are you covering state, national, or world history? Are you doing it as a unit study, a box curriculum, or an eclectic mix of things? Tell me what is going on in your home schoolhouse as you study history :-)
