I'll ditto the kudos for Aziza's companion DVD. It's great! I don't have any others to compare it to. I have done some of the "Shimmy" workouts on the Fit network too, which are ok.

Hi,
I just got Belly Dance- Perfect Hips by Cheekygirl Productions and it is fantastic! It's just a good solid workout. The instructor is Michelle and she has a few other DVD s on Amazon which I'll probably try- the best part is that they don't have the hefty price tag of the IAMED DVDs.

Happy Dancing

I just got Luscious and Bellydance Basics and Beyond. So far I can't complain. I like how BBB has no music while she's instructing. It keeps me focused.

Hi,
I'll add another vote to the Aziza's Practice Companion!

I'd also be interested in knowing more about the "New" Rachel Brice DVD.

Has Anyone tried the Michelle Joyce DVD's on Amazon? (I think one is called Pop, Lock and Shimmy) I am looking for some DVD's that have actual drills comparable to Rachal Brice and Aziza's Practice Companion. Any suggestions? Thanks!

my all time favorite workout video is "Bellydancing: the Sensuous Workout with Shamira", the first version. She re-did it a few years ago, and it's just fine in the new version, but I still prefer the first version which is long out of print. My copy of the old one is cherished and rarely pulled out for fear of losing it. LOL... I use the new version sometimes. Fairly basic but it was one of my first videos ever, so I love it. There's also a sequel, which is also fun.

I love her instructionals too.

I've been working out with Aziza's Ultimate Bellydance Practice Companion. There's a shimmy practice section that is kick butt! love it!

wow, jill dancer, not to start up a cabaret-tribal debate, but it seems like youre outright dissing tribal and fusion in some of your posts here. ive studied with two traditional egyptian cabaret instructors (each for about six month to year long periods) but im a tribal girl from the start. (actually my first class was jumping right into ATS) who is really to say what is authentic and whats not? werent the "traditional" moves at one point in time (yes, perhaps centuries ago) innovative, new, and breaking boundaries? i dont like the mindset that fusion and tribal arent "true bellydance" because who defined "true bellydance" to begin with?

The DVD I use to learn the basics of belly dance is Belly Dance basics and beyond with Jenna. The DVD is 2 hr and 20 min of detailed instruction and practice.
I ordered mine through Amazon from OceanState Media
for more info go to: www.beyondbellydance.com
My second DVD that I purchased was Belly Dance Instructional Fitness Workout within Traditional Movement. This is fun and a great 1 hour workout.
I read about this on Amazon, but found it on Ebay direct from the manufacturer saved alot of $$$.
for more info go to: www.arabiannights.ca
Hope this helps someone choose the best DVD for their needs.

I also love Jillina. She's very instructional. Easy to follow and helps in putting it in a routine. I also like bellyqueen they add alil hip hop to the bellydancing world. Also in FitTv they have a show called SHIMMY which is really good their first season is out but I think you would need to buy it via internet.

I have to agree with Rachel Brice's Yoga Isolations and Drills for Bellydance. That is a great DVD to practice to. My other favorite is Aziza's Ultimate Practice Companion. Her 20 minute shimmython in the middle is a great way to practice layering.

VANYELMOON - i just bought the same DVD , Jenna's, basics and beyond. I have been going to a class for the past 2 months and i learnt more in this DVD than i have from the class. I did the first hour, with all the basic moves. Definatley felt the work out, but think i will do the suggested 30 min moderate workout tomorrow. Cant wait.

A good place to check out the ratings and reviews of dvds is www.shira.net. Shira's site also has an enormous wealth of bellydance information on all things bellydance. It can give you an idea on which dvds are more workout types versus videos of a performance.

I really enjoyed amiramor I bought one of her dvd's at ross for about 5$ or less.I GOT IT AT ROSS!!!hehe. I also get them with my blockbuster online program and it's nice because I have like 50 bellydancing dvd's on my list and I can practice with one until I am completely satisfied and move on to the next whenever I am ready since there is no late fees. And I can do it in the privacy of my own home where nobody can watch my big belly floppin around.LOL. VIVA LA BLOCKBUSTER!!

Two DVDs I just rented are the "Ulitimate Bellydance Workout" and Rachel Brice's "Bellydance Arms and Posture."
Ultimate has virtually no cueing, which is really bad when streching and shouldn't be looking at the screen and you don't know that they have moved on to a different stretch. Other than that it is a good workout for experience bellydancer.

Rachel's dvd is well cued and is good for drills to increase flexibility and proper positioning for upperbody moves. I would recommend it to experienced dancers to add to normal practice. I am definiately buying this one!!!

I just started trying to learn after years of wishing and thinking "someday". I got Perfect Hips and have learned how uncoordinated I really am. Ha! The instructor is Michelle Joyce and they have a website called cheekygirlsproductions.com. It breaks down the moves so they are more understandable and also helps you put them together. So far I really like this!

I actually find a lot of bellydance DVD's at Ross- I know I have gotten BellyTwins, Rania's series, and Suhaila's DVD's there- they always have lots of stuff from Natural Journeys, and I don't think I have paid over $6 for any of them.

Good to hear that others find Rania a little too bouncy- I did Cardio Shimmy this morning, and while it was a decent workout, my joints are not happy with me!

Ebay is awesome for cheap ones... usually about 5 bucks. Or see if your local rec center is offering classes! Me and a few friends take a class there, it's pretty cheap and way more fun then at home alone!

I just got Jenna's Belly Dance basics and beyond video and it is very good. It really great for the beginner to learn the correct posture and moves and there are combination segments that can be used to get a good workout. I also bought Sensual Belly Dance with Bianca but have not tried it yet. I wanted to actually learn the moves, not just have an exercise video.

Don't give up. I remember exactly feeling the same way when I started to bellydance! It took me months before I could do anything correctly.

I found some short video clips on YouTube that may help you. The instructors explain the basics and it is easy to repeat each clip. Do a search on the following:

Egyptian Bellydance Moves and Costumes
Step Touch
Hip Drop
Snake Arms
Figure Eight

How to bellydance Hip Raise

Good Luck!

Hang in there!! Eventually you will start picking up the belly dance moves. It takes a little time. Introduction to Bellydance by the Bellydance Superstars is a great beginner video. Belly dance is very challenging. But, that is what makes it so fun. Hope that helps out! Shimmy away!!

Hi yall i bought my third belly dance dvd and still no luck. Hubby is getting mad at me buying them now. I bought the twin girls Veena and Neena and it still does not have basic moves they start and I am at a loss as to where I should begin. The Ebay ad said it was beginner but it wasn't. then yesterdat I got one of Rania's in the mail today the ebay add siad it explained the basic moves also it didn't. it only threw moves to gether for a nice performence. I have not given, up I found on by Amira it says it has basic moves on it on her web site so I guess I will save up and get it. So my goal of knowing any type of belly dancing other than watching it has been put off almost 2 months now. I am really upset with me over this I just can't seem to find one that breaks the moves down step by step. There are no classes close by here in Ky to learn from. So i am stuck in Bellydance world with no hopes of learning in :( This is bumming me out.

My favorite workout list includes the Suhaila Fusion series. Her dance format is very based upon muscle control and this series is a good start for that control. It reminds me of the discipline I had to have in practicing scales and arpeggio's when I was a piano student. It is hard to do but the discipline pays off.

Hadia's Complete Oriental Series contains a great workout DVD as well.

I have a very old (It's on VHS) tape by Jannie Rabbitt.
It's pretty basic, but since I've been away from this for quite a while (maybe 20 years), and my local classes don't start up for another month, it's a pretty good refresher

Has anyone tried Dolphina's newest cardio belly dance dvd? I'm not a huge fan of hers, but I always like to mix dance with cardio, so I was wondering if it was worth the purchase. Right now, I'm trying to learn some bhangra and Indian moves which are great because they're so beautiful! emoticon

I haven't seen the fusion series...I urge my own students to stick with the 'classic' form of the dance until they've mastered it enough to fuse another form...fusion does lend itself to all types of different dancers, sizes, styles...

I've only got Suhaila's Fusion series but there are some girls on there that are pretty beefy.
Haven't seen any of her actual instructional videos though, i've caught mixed reviews on them so i'm skittish. That and I still haven't decided if I like her style of dancing or not, she seems a bit, I don't know stuck on herself.

My 2-cents...
I completely agree that all of the Belly-Twins DVDs are terrific. Their workout series has belly dance moves, but if you want more authentic belly dance lessons, stick to their instructional (not workout) series.
Jillina is also terrific...I find that most absolute beginners have some trouble starting...but...with patience...you'll do great!
I've studied with Hadia and while I think she's WONDERFUL and a very controlled dancer, there are some movements that she recommends that I find dangerous for all dancers to execute...not the least of which are her non-bent knee shimmies. This is NOT good for the knees or lower back!
Fat Chance Belly Dance's style of dancing is what is called "American Tribal Style". It is an American-created dance using Middle Eastern motifs. It's a wonderful way to express female beauty...but not what I would recommend to someone who wants to learn authentic belly dance (meaning dance steeped in the Middle Eastern tradition).
Finally...Suhaila...sigh...her DVDs are based on her own method of dancing and teaching. It is VERY fusion...meaning that she has fused a considerable amount of Middle Eastern dance with an even MORE considerable amount of American jazz. Her dancers are all teeny girls and not the 'classic' belly dancer in feel, style, mood or appearance.
Save her DVD to drill to later...right now, focus on the pleasure of finding yourself in the music, learning the movements and enjoying yourself!
Jill

You guys got me to dust off the new dvd's I bought in October -- finally took off the shrink wrap ... I went to a Hadia workshop ... it was really interesting .. she's into "body" movements that go along with the body and many of the movements I've learned to do really do strain it.

So thanks guys!

This week i am working out every day with the "sensual Belly Dance with Blanca. for me its just a good warmup and moves. Who knows what Ill be doing next week. I do a little with "Belly Dance with Michelle-pop, lock, and shimmy drum solos technique and choreography" but I am not quite good enough to do this one, Need to have really good muscles. so i play around with it once a week. A friend of mine has a new one we are going to try on wed.I am not sure what it is. But It is good that we have belly dance class once a week so that an instructor can help us make the right movements.

The term ohdeer came from when I was doing deer research. When working with deer (or any mammal) it seemed like everytime I would look up it was OH-DEAR! thus it got turned in OHDEER so it has just stuck with me.

Carolena is a GODDESS. She is also very nice, I've taken a workshop from her and been on a group on tribe.net with her. She is really informative and a good teacher. Her FatChance workouts are all good. Rachel Brice used to study wih her, as did Jill Parker of http://www.ultragypsy.com/

Some of the stuff on Suhaila's DVD's are a little hard to start with. Try out the BellyTwins 3 disc series. Its basic bellydance so you can get a little taste to get you hooked. Pretty easy to follow and fun.
After that they have some workout DVD's for beginners.

Rania has a learn to bellydance DVD out as well as some workout DVD's. Some of hers stray away from bellydance just a little but there are still some basic moves there.
She has a DVD My Personal Bellydance trainer, i think that's the name of it. But that is is like 50 workouts that are spliced from her other dvds, sounds like a cheezey money making ploy but if you are familiar with her other videos then its actually a fun way to do the workouts. However on this one she kind of expects you to be familiar with the other videos so she just kind of jumps into routines. They are not tough so you can pick up most of it after doing them a couple times.
This one also has a gloassary of moves so you can click to that and learn a few or refresh.

There is also the 3 disc set by Jillina that that is progressive so you can start with a simple routine and work your way up. But I would start with the bellytwins for a week or two then move up to Jillina.

The Bellydance Superstars have an Intro to bellydance video but I haven't had a chance to actually do it yet so I can't tell you much about it except that what I watched of it looks pretty good.

All of these are available from amazon.

I think I need a little advice here I just recently reciived my first belly Dancing dvd Belly Dance Body for beginners with Suhaila 2 things happened here.
she made me faulter in my own self exteem for a few minutes it hit me like this, she is so pretty and well put togther and moves with grace. I feel like jello and look like it lol compared to her physique and moves.
The other thing is no where did I find any beginner steps or how it was explained it went staight like you already knew the basics. Can some one point me somehwere to find one that breaks down the steps and explains them. I really want to do this for me. Darn that beauty queen lol Actually she did not intimated me long I just got a bad feeling about myself but over came it quickly when I realized one day I will be where I am happy and that pretty much took care of it. This lady really did dance good. But this is not the Dvd for me now onc eI can get the basics down then look out Suhaila here I come to dance with you :)

Aside from her high profile work...if you scoot around the web, I think on YouTube, you can see video of her dancing in a nightclub...not only is she just gorgeous...she's also a terrific Egyptian style dancer!!! LUV her!

I hope you don't mind my chiming in...2-cents worth and all...
I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone using Dolphina's tapes/dvds to use them instead as doorstops. Her instruction contains a GROSS amount of misinformation, some moves that I would NEVER teach as I feel they are stressful to back or joints and the whole sexy-kitten thing is offensive to me and the Middle Eastern Dance community.
I DO, however, recommend the Neena & Veena series to all my beginning students. NOT their workout videos...their belly dance instructionals are fun and easy to follow along!
Jillina's DVDs are also lovely, tho absolute beginners may find them too fast...
REALLY affordable DVDs can be found at WorldDanceNewYork.com . Neon, who is a NYC dancer and a friend produces dozens of titles a year...they're very affordable (most around $20) and range from 'instant belly dancer' moves to core conditioning, workouts, fantasy genre, like fusion, and more!

I also have the Neena and Veena videos. I used them maybe twice. I think they are too much like a workout and not enough belly dancing. I enjoy bellydancing because it doesn't feel like a workout, it's fun. Of course it feels like a workout the next day!

I want to get some new DVDs to work out with but I'm afraid that they will either be too hard or just bad instruction.

My favorite right now it Contemporary Belly Dance and Yoga Conditioning with Ariellah. The instruction is top notch, this is definitely conditioning.

I agree that Dolphina is very cheesy but I still like it for basic moves. I have to turn the sound down.

The first on I bought was Bellydance Fitness for Beginners - Veena and Neena, and I have to admit that I don't use it at all, not really sure why.

I like Rania tapes although I could do without her half-hearted encouragement.

I have Delphina's Warrior Goddess, man is she cheesy. I possibly would not still be doing it but someof the moves I don't have down yet and I refuse to give up.

I love Jillina series and the East Coast Tribal workout.

I'm not a big fan Rania fan - I only had one of her tapes but I didn't really get a lot out of it - either in terms of technique or in terms of a cardio workout.

I have Delphina's set, and although I think she's very annoying, I do like them. I also love the Arm, Abs, Hips. etc. DVDs.

I have heard nothing but great things about Jillina but I haven't had a chance to check her stuff out yet.

Dolphina was cheesey, but she got me hooked. Have all four of hers. She's actually got a couple new ones coming out, I can't wait to rent them and sit with a tub of popcorn, its going to be high entertainment.

Got the 3 disc Sensual bellydance with neena and veena. I quite enjoy them. Fun little workout.
Got the Arm, Abs, Hips, Buns and Thighs DVD as well, but I don't seem to have opened it. I think its a collection of the VHS tapes which I have done. The are kind of aerobic and I work up a sweat doing them. I kind of feel it in my legs the next day as well.
Got their Indi Hop and Core videos, didn't like them at all at first but they are growing on me.

Got the Suhaila 4 DVD set from Natural journeys. I go off and on with Suhaila, some times I love her sometimes I don't but the isolation stuff she does tears me up. I don't think I'm every going to get that squatting butt squeeze.

I love love love the 3 DVD Jillina set. I think she's such a sweetie.

Got a crap load of Rania, cause I just like her. She got me to bounce a bit more, never would bounce before.

I'm still warming up to the Ultimate Bellydance workout.

Got a couple of Neon's DVD's I really just can't stand her.

Wow, come to think of it, as much as I've spent on DVD's I should be better at this.

I've just got Bellydance for Body shaping:Floorwork http://www.amazon.com/Bellydance-Body-Shap
ing-Floorwork-workout/dp/B0007U1YEO
It's a fantastic core workout, and very easy to follow, though just be careful on the backbends if you're not used to them. Also be prepared for the intensely irritating New Age background music. The actual music during the workout is ok, but the muzak while the DVD is resting sets my teeth on edge.

Possibly one of the BEST bellydance vendors on ebay is Kevin with Oceanstate Media. He's a regular on a lot of the bellydance yahoo groups and message boards, and he always listens to what the dancers ask for.

He usually sells IAMED dvds about $10-20 cheaper than most people, and he will try and distribute any dvd you request. Plus, he offers "Make Offer" option on most of his dvds and will often give you free shipping if you just ask for it.

He has EXCELLENT customer service too! And he's quick to get back with you on questions and such. Quick shipping too.

Ocean State Media. I don't own stock in or anything (LOL) but I probably ought to, since I practically spend my whole paycheck with him!

I just got Jenna's Belly Dancing Basics and Beyond and I really like it. I think it is great for a beginner like me. Thank you for recommending it. I think someone might have mentioned it, but I do miss music during the instruction though. I was only able to do an hour and a half of it today, but look forward to the part of the DVD that works on combinations.

I got this from Ebay. Just be careful when getting your DVDs from there. I had looked at all of the sellers positive comments and then of course the moment I won the auction.. all of these negative comments started coming in about them. I was lucky to get my DVD.. many of the people didn't. Just a word of warning. Do you best to make sure it is someone with a long history of selling on Ebay with lots of positive comments.

I'll have to try Azar's dvd -- I think Netflix has it.

The Cardio Bellydance dvd is nice, but now that I've done it a while, I'm bored by it. I get a better workout just practicing my drum solos now! LOL

As far as workout DVDs, I really like Azar's Belly Dance Workout Level 1. But it's not really an instructional DVD, so if you're a beginner you might have trouble following her. It's also only 45 minutes, but at the end of those 45 minutes, I'm covered in sweat! It's also low-impact, no bouncing *at all* (which is important if any of you have any joint issues like I do).

For DVDs to learn from, I mainly use Jenna's Belly Dance Basics and Beyond. It's a great DVD to learn from, as well as to exercise the muscles you need for belly dancing. My only complaint about this DVD is that she doesn't have background music for most of the sections... One of my favorite things about belly dancing is the music, so that's a really big negative for me. I also use Neena and Veena's DVDs (I just copied them from Netflix; I don't really think they're worth buying), but I tend to find them too easy.

Oh... this is perfect. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good dvds. My husband just ordered one for me from Netflix... we'll see how it goes. My first one was a Dolphina... great music, but she was trying too hard to be sexy. To me, it went against everything that belly dancers are. Sensual, yes... but overt sexy is trashy. My opinion... but I know lots of women who love her.

I am all about Amazon (also a starving college student/bellydancer)

You will find that if you are patient enough to wait for the new releases to be available for about a week, you can find them "used" but in really good condition for sometimes half the original price.

Just be VERY sure to read the reviews....I have seen some reviewers over and over on some of these DVD's and I know which ones seem to agree with my personal preferences (you can check out their other reviews, too, just to make sure).

Also, if you have NetFlix (the greatest invention EVER), most of these titles are or will be available for rental. What I like to do is rent from Netflix, decide whether I will do it more than once, and buy it if I decide I will. I discovered the beauty behind that after I had Suhaila's "Buns" video for about three months....but returned Rania's "Pure Sweat" video after doing it once (returned it SAME DAY!!!).

Try this link -- you may have to cut and paste:

Also, on that same site, off to the left, in the menu under DANCE is bellydance instructionals.

Also naturaljourneys.com for Suhaila, Neena and Veena, and Rania.

Or search for the title on ebay and you'll find lots of sellers. Tell me which ones you want links for and I'll post them.

Some of my favorites:

1) Yoga and BellyDance Drills with Rachel Brice (BDSS/Copeland)

2) Contemporary Bellydance and Yoga Conditioning with Ariella (World Dance NY)

3) Suhaila's Bellydance Fitness Fusion set (my favorite is the Buns dvd)

4) Cardio Bellydance Workout with Melissa (World Dance NY) ~DISCLAIMER: Even though she's a "fitness instructor", Melissa does not cue well. This DVD is a fitness dve utilizing a lot of Turkish style dance, and unless you already know the movement (luckily I did), you will be lost in the first few minutes...she moves very fast and is already in the middle of something before she tells you to do it. Watching the video a few times before doing the workout is highly recommended. Aside from that, I definitely sweat way more with this one than I ever did with any of Rania's...and Melissa is WAY less annoying.~

5) Love the drills section of Bellydance East Coast Tribal with Sera (again World Dance NY)...includes some good combination ideas, but the toning you get from the drills is great.

Finally...
6) Bellydance Basics and Beyond: Technique for a Solid Foundation with Jenna. Good drills for in-between classes and such, and good foundation for people who are just starting classes.

Has anyone tried Bellydance for Core Fitness with Ayshe? I wondered how that was....thought about ordering from Amazon, but just not sure yet.

Thanks for the suggestions...I'll check them out!

Oy, went through all the combos in Jillina's DVD last night, and I'm feeling it today! It's the camels; my back is a bit sore. Not the bad kind of sore, the good kind from working out! I just hope I'm doing them correctly. (The way she's teaching, I mean! When in Rome...)

If you like Jillina's Level One, you might also like her Drum Solo choreography and her Pop Choreography DVDs. The pop choreography has little combos you can pull out and make your own drills or dances, and the drum solo DVD teaches a GREAT drum solo, that's a great cardio workout if you do it over and over again.

I haven't done the whole video yet (watched the Technique & some of the Combinations sections), but I have a feeling that Jillina's Lv 1 DVD will become a favorite! The combos look great, similar to what my teacher has us do in class. Tonight after work I plan to go through the entire DVD...unless the 90 degree heat proves too great an obstacle (I'm too cheap to switch on the A/C!!).

For instructional DVDs, I recommend:

1. Neena and Veena 3-volume "Sensual Art of Bellydance" (especially volumes 1 and 2)
2. Jenna's Bellydance Basics and Beyond (one of the BEST!)
3. And actually, any of the bellydance instructional dvds from World Dance New York. These are great for beginners.

Remember to keep an upright posture, keep your knees slightly bent, and use your low abs to keep your tail tucked under you. Keeping your butt tucked while you dance is also a great workout for those low abs!

Remember, you can rent Bellydance fitness DVDs from Netflix and Blockbuster. Netflix has DVDs from World Dance New York, Suhaila, Rania, Neena & Veena, and many more.

You might want to try before you buy. There are some REAL dogs out there.

Avoid the following:

1. Bellydance for Wimps
2. Janine Rabbit's Bellydance (usually available for cheap on ebay)
3. I'm not a fan of the Dolphina DVDs, but some people like them. I don't think she's a very good teacher.
4. Rania's DVDs are primarily fitness related, and contain a LOT of bouncing and high-impact activities. If you're not a bouncer, be warned!
5. I'm not a fan of the Kathy Smith Bellydance DVD either.
