I hear you on the self conscience thing.....I did something last month that was GREAT....

Put 25watt bulbs in the lamps....drape some hip scarves (lacy ones) over the lamps ....be careful to keep them away from the heat source....use pins or clips or whatever you have...I suspended my 'lacy tents' from the ceiling.

He was NOT ALLOWED TO TALK OR TOUCH.....the light was dim, yet light enough for him to get a good view.....
I wore what I knew looked good to accentuate my positives and disguise my negatives.

I drank a glass of wine prior to help me relax.

It was GREAT FUN.....hope you are able to find a way...you will love it.

I'm just starting w/ a new teacher tomorrow but my goal is 1 1-hr class a week, plus at least 2 at home practice sessions of 30 min each. That's not really much, I know, but it's a start.

Ok, well I have a question...I have been taking belly dancing and pole dancing classes for a while, and my husband is dying for me to dance for him, but I am very self conscience. (sp?) I greatly dislike my stomach because of the flab from having twins. How do I get over myself and dance for him? I know he won't care about the way I look, after all I was this size when we married, I have just rearranged my fat.

BTW I do 2 1 hour classes a week...

Fall sessions just started up thank goodness, so I'll be doing 3 1-hour classes a week over 2 days. I "practice" as much as I can at home-- shimmy while I cook, camel walk around the house, belly rolls in front of the mirror... ;)

I've never been great with dance DVDs. I think I need the 3-D version UNLESS it's a really great instructor. I need to get into a better home practice routine.

It isn't that I don't workout. I do regular aerobics daily and lift weights every other day. But to really get into a dance routine I have to feel sexy about myself. Otherwise, I just don't put as much energy into and feel sluggish afterwards.

I have hit a plateau, so it must be time to shake things up - literally! I haven't been dancing regularly at all lately, so I'll be putting it in my calendar this week. Maybe I can make a deal with my boyfriend - 2 nights a week, he can make dinner & I'll dance!!

Thanks! Doesn't seem all that much to me, only a little over an hour. It's so fun, though!

I told my mom about how I want to get the Jillina Lv 3 DVD, and that I could order it from Borders for $20 but want to get it cheaper...she ended up ordering it from Amazon for me. Sweet! Of course I'm only halfway through the Lv 2 DVD, but still!

I did 70 minutes of bellydance last night. Shimmy warmup to Oojami's "Chicky", stretching to Gamal Gommaa's "Sahara Saidi" (love that one!), and then did the little parts of routines that I am learning to Hakim's "Talakik" (which I'm listening to RIGHT NOW!). All of these are from the Bellydance Superstars' first CD.

Then I put in Jillina's Lv 2 DVD and went through the combos section & into the choreography section. I can do the dance pretty good up to the part where you're kneeling. My knees have been sore for about 2 weeks, for reasons unknown. I doubt it's due to BD, as I've been doing that regularly since June. My dad says it's probably due to bicycling. All I know is that it makes me feel like I'm 100 years old!

Jade -- don't be discouraged!!! Those glute squeezes are definately something to work into. I couldn't do them when I first got the dvds either. In time, if you practice them, they will get faster and faster. For now, just modify the exercise to alternate squeezing them as fast as you can. The 3/4 will come, and when it does, you can post that as a personal success story, okay?!

People think Suhaila's dvds are "beginner level" and they ARE NOT. This is simply the foundation of her technique, and it's very different from Egyptian or Am Cab or ATS, so you might have been dancing for 30 years, but you would still have to start at the beginning with Suhaila's format.

We have experienced dancers in her workshops who are like, "What the heck is that???" Don't let that intimidate you. It's new, and it's confusing or difficult, but it won't STAY that way!

Remember on the glute squeezes, you're squeezing sort of the side of the glute, NOT your sphincter :)

Well, I still can't get the fast 3/4 butt clenches. I remember when I first got this DVD, it discouraged me a little. I consider myself an intermediate to advanced bellydancer, and I couldn't keep up the exercises for as many reps as she does them. I am going to try and keep at it and see what happens. This week I'm rotating the Suhalia DVDs along with my cardio every day.

Hi Elisha! Sorry it took so long to respond to you.

As far as teaching videos, if you like Neena and Veena, they have a 3-volume set of instructional DVDs called Discover Bellydance. You can get these cheap off ebay. These are NOT the bellydance fitness dvds. They are purely instructional. I think they might teach a choreography or two, as well.

Neena and Veena have several fitness DVDs, and you might try Rania's dvds by Natural Journeys. Rania is a fitness instructor. SHe's not a very good bellydancer, but the workouts are good.

My favorite bellydance toning vids are Suhaila's Bellydance Fitness Fusion, also by Natural Journeys. These are toning DVDs, and aren't cardio, but they rock!

Instructional DVDs won't be cardio-oriented, since they want to focus on teaching you the specific technique and movements.

Another good one for intermediates is the Temple of Jehan Ultimate Bellydance Workout available from World Dance New York. There is no instruction on this dvd, so you kinda need to know what you're doing first, but it's a great workout.

I did a 30m arms/abs workout yesterday, and boy, did it kick my butt! I'm going to do the hips/legs/thighs workout tonight. It's the Neena/Veena dvd, but does anybody have a better recommendation for learning proper technique and that even gives a great cardio workout?? Thanks!

6/7 = I was out the whole day.... no dancing.... and any other activities.

6/8 = better, I had 45 minutes. But, I'm starting to get bored with the choice of music. Hope I can find better music than Shakira's.

You may go to youtube.com and look for Shakira's video, start with Suerte. You'll see how she dances belly dancing. This dance is a movement of your tummy, that's why it helps us strengthen the tummy muscles and not only that. It makes our tummy smaller in size...

oh wow sounds like you are doing a good job on dancing,I am starting to do a stpper exercise,
