I'm starting again, myself, so I'm thankful for all the great suggestions in this thread. I took some classes through the local community center years ago and loved them, although I'm terribly uncoordinated and probably only got half as far as anyone else in the class. I keep trying, though, and working with videos is good for me because I can rewind again and again and just keep at it bit by bit until my body cooperates. I'm glad I found this group and I'm glad someone asked just the question I needed to ask.

Love, love, love free... I'm telling you, if you are just starting out, you have to get signed up for Mahin's Bellydance Quickie. Its a daily quick blurb in the bd world. Sometimes its videos of performers, other times its Mahin breaking down dance moves. She's like a smorgasbord... visit every day and she may just be serving something you are looking for!!!

I am just starting too. I can not yet afford local classes either, as I am currently without a job, but being jobless can't last forever, somebody is going to have to hire me sooner or later. In the meantime I'm on a tight budget and have had to seek out alternative forms of learning belly dance and I discovered that if you go to YouTube and search: "Belly dancing lessons" and/or "Belly Dance Workout" you come up with thousands of YouTube vids that teach you belly dancing... FOR FREE!

I love Neon. I have one of her DVDs and hope to acquire more. She's really good at breaking down the steps and, you're right, her voice is wonderful!

Hi Nyappykitty :D

This is a really great one!

The teacher is "Neon" from New York. She's my favorite Belly Dance DVD instructor. Her voice is just gorgeous to listen to and her instructions are very clear and precise. I have several of her DVDs and I enjoy them very much.

Happy Dancing!

Hi There,
I really like Belly by Sandra series she is very good at braking down the movements. Belly Dance Basics by Michelle Joyce is another great intro DVD.

If you are looking for a very thorough guide to belly dance DVD's there is a fabulous post by one of the members of orientaldancer.net

This is a great thread for dancers of all levels. www.bellydanceforums.net/instructors

I just saw a clip of dolphina and yeah - i've been around the bd block, but that was horrible. her movements weren't smooth. she looked like she was trying to show off, not teach a beautiful dance at all. I honestly don't know what to recommend because I learned from 4 different teachers. i now learn on my own. expanding my skills and such. neena and veen are okay - not for the serious student but it could be a stepping stone for you.

Welcome!!! If you have Netflix, check there. Also, check your local library, cause free is always best. Also, youtube is good. You are going to want to make sure that you find one that encourages good posture, this is critical for keeping the body safe.

I find Dolphina annoying as she whispers into the camera and gives the dance steps "cutesy" names. She seems to make it more sexual, than sensual, which is very offensive to many of the dance community. I know she says that she started bellydance at age 4, but must have forgotten most of it, as many of her dance forms are hmmm, sloppy, for lack of a better word, which makes them dangerous to the body. I mean, it ain't gonna kill you, but you could get hurt. That said, she is very popular, and has a big following

There are many dancers out there, find the style that you like, Egyptian, Turkish, American, Rom, Tribal and then all the sub categories under Tribal. I hear that a good one is Amira's "Bellydance 101", if you are looking for more of bellydance styling, rather than a "workout" based on bellydance techniques. Another is "Introduction to Bellydance" with Sonia, Bozenka, Amar Gamal and Saida.

www.shes-got-hips.com This is Mahin's site. She is a wealth of info, sign up for her daily quickie. Every day she emails a quick blip related to the dance. She is fantastic and will answer questions usually within a few days.

Good luck... you'll love this dance. Its beautiful, sensual and definitely a sisterhood. I was fortunate because my first teacher knew its rich history and shared it with her students. It is a gift that you give yourself and maybe will choose to share with others if you decide to perform publicly.

I like the Goddess Workout by Dolphina, Love Potion w/Blanca, Neon and Sarah Skinner, Bellydance Fitness for Beginners w Veena & Neena, Cardio Bellydance w/Dolphina. They are both instructional and fitness programs. I use them at home all the time. The Goddess Workout I've been using for the past 5 years.
