I am a size 40F, I obviously make my own. The best for me is the "re-build" and existing bra, just replace any "stretchy" type material, like the straps. It makes it easier to embelish, because every girl is shaped different up top. I was scared to try it at first, but now it's a snap!

Cool, I didn't know Fire Mountain had coins.... of course I generally oogle over their catalog before looking for whatever it is I want to buy, and it reminds me of the big JCPenney catalog, the thing is probably an inch thick at least. :)

Hi, I'm new to the team, but as a jewler I wanted to answer your question about buying coins online. You can type in "findings" and "jewelry" into any search engine (I used google) and lots of jewelry suppliers pop up. I typed coins into fire mountain's product search ( a company I have used before) and lots of different types came up. Anyway good luck, and it's for a great cause.

What I've heard recommended is if you are adding a lot of beads or sequins (think cabaret), go up a cup size. As you start beading and adding sequins, the cups shrink. Also, make a removable lining for the cups. That way you can take them out and wash them really well after performance. You can use soft, thin hook and eye tape (velcro) to hold the lining in.

I made my first one out of a preexisting bra-had to do a small amount of adapting, but it fit better than anything I've had since--and be careful of edge trim as someone else stated cuz it can ouch!

So who should I be talking to that you know who needs my skills?

Oh and on bras, if you are the cabaret type... if the sequins overlaps... yee-ouchy momma. I made a bra, sewed on sequins at the bottom and cut myself to bits. And when you start sweating... holy schmoley... hard to smile when truly salt has been poured into the wound!!!

That's true, but you do have to be careful because of the fitting. I've gotten lucky because my dance teacher lets students sell their old costumes on the racks in her studio (which is funny to say, because she just has this small room her cousin built for her off her home), so you're able to try stuff on. I've tried on various "sizes" and found a 36B that fit, then tried on what was supposed to be a 38D that was nearly too small. Are you able to get to any belly dancing events close by? Big name vendors will show up and let you try on costumes to find your fit. It would be a total bummer to buy cheap and find out it doesn't fit right. Sometimes I kick myself for the purchases I've made trying to save money. I may as well have driven down the road, opened the window and throw out $50...

From what I'm finding you can find them on ebay, but it might be cheaper to buy a costume already made. i need to measure my hips and such to see what i come up with for needing size wise. lol.

I generally get mine from ebay. I started with the fake ones, but really prefer the real. The vendors that I like are Indus Valley Tribal Arts, sirik and beads and rocks. I've had good luck with all three. Hope this helps...

I have never completely taken a bra apart, only cut off the straps to add ties, which is my preference. I have bras that I've gotten from various members of my dance troupe that have just been the bra itself, embellished. Some are velvet or the thick padded kind, which hold up well for heavy items. Also, I recommend a light fishing line for sewing with, because it holds up to the abuse.

Would it make sense to just add embeishments to an existing bra without taking it apart? I.e. stiching on coins and ribbon ect?

I thought about doing this but not sure if it would turn out in crappy. Any tips?

I have taken bras that I like the fit on me and added on coins, ribbon and beads. One thing that I learned the hard way, was that I completely recovered a bra with material and the bra was too small after I did that. I usually cut the straps off and make it a tie at the neck type, as that is the style I prefer. Have fun!!!

I agreed to make a bra for a breast cancer fundraiser thing in an online community that I am part of. I was thinking about making a belly dance costume type bra so that it is actually usable whenever someone buys it.

I have not had the money to buy a costume before though, so I'm looking for advice on tips for fit/comfort/usability type things that I should know before I start. I was thinking about reverse engineering a bra that I have for regular use for a pattern for this, does that work for a decorative bra of this type? I would love to hear peoples experiences with making costume bras as well.

Thanks,
Megan
