Thanks a lot. I never thought of that. I am definitely going to make sure I do that.

If you put the emphasis on the 'back' motion, it's a lot less sexual/scandalous.

The shimmy you described is usually called a Turkish shimmy in the US. It is often used in Turkish cabaret style. It can be done as a shimmy or an accent move. In Turkish cabaret style it is usually used as an accent move.

To do a Turkish shimmy, you tilt your pelvis forward and then relax your pelvis. Do this rapidly and you get a forward/back shimmy. As an accent it is often done in singles, doubles, or triples on the Dom beats. Careful with singles because they can sometimes look like the pelvic thrust used in burlesque.

Keep your feet no wider than shoulder distance apart. And your knees should be relaxed and not locked. Keep your lower back relaxed. Use the muscles in your bottom to tilt your pelvis, not your back muscles.

I've been practicing bellydancing for a week now, and trying to learn all I can from outside sources (mostly internet resources) and I read somewhere about a different kind of shimmy, forward and back shimmy? You thrust your hips forward and back in small, vibrating motions? I don't know a lot about this and I want to. Does anyone know what this is and how to do it? If so, can you please explain it to me? I'm always looking for new challenges to keep me dancing. :)

Thank you!!

You're all laughing at me because I'm different. I laugh at you because you're all the same.
