Zills tone up your forearms, snake arms, veil, and cane and...well, just dancing in general tone upper arms, shoulders, and upper back. Most moves tone your abs (including the very deep ab muscles), and Egyptian-style shimmies are good for your quads and hams.

I agree that the sort of dance (plus, of course, your weight) determine how many calories you burn. You could take your pulse or monitor your breath (can you talk easily) to get a general sense of how hard you're working.

I've had positive changes in my body, and my relationship with my body, because of dance. It's also a form of exercise I actually enjoy, which puts it well above jogging for me. :)

toning is my best thing from the dance. I have abs at 175 that my friends who don't dance, don't have at 145 (my "perfect" weight).

Saidi will kick your butt... but I don't know how hard!!! It will leave you sweaty and wanting more tho.

The calories per hour vary widely depending on the kind of dancing you are doing for that hour. If you are just practicing slower moves, it is more like pilates than cardio. Not a lot of calories burned, but good for strengthening muscles. I think it would take an hour of mostly fast drum solo or cane or something to get the 300 calories per hour you mentioned. I lost weight when my class was practicing a fairly fast-paced number and I would practice for an hour at least 4 days a week. Once we started doing slower numbers & I only did it 2 or 3 times a week, I gained a couple pounds back. So, as far as weight loss is concerned, it all really depends on how much effort you put into doing fast moves that get your heart pumping.

I think it is also very good for shoulder muscles and all of the postural muscles.

I think bellydance is great for building core muscles. When I first started dancing back in 2002 I lost about 6 inches in my waist and 3 from each thigh in just 6 months. I was only taking a 1 hour class a week and practicing for 30 minutes twice a week. I wasn't watching what I ate or anything.

Hi girls!! I haven't been on this team in awhile, I've stopped dancing but decided to take it back up today. :) Yea!! My elliptical isn't working and doesn't offer any source of muscle control or skill, and besides, I miss dancing. I was just wondering a few things about bellydancing:
How many calories does it burn an hour, do you think?? I've looked it up on online calculators, and the most it says is about 300 calories an hour. :(
Also, what has been all of your experiences with
waist shrinkage due to your dancing??
Has anyone retained muscle and lost fat after bellydancing for awhile??

Thank you for reading this!! Keep dancing, lovelies!!

You're all laughing at me because I'm different. I laugh at you because you're all the same.
