See if you can take a tape recorder and audio record the class so you can go over it later. When we have workshops, I try to get everyone I know to put our notes together to do a "booklet" of what we went over.

I took a veil workshop with Aziza this past winter and she was wonderful! We had all skill levels in the class and she was patient with the beginners without boring the experts. As I fall somewhere in the middle but closer to beginner, I thought she was perfect. And such a great, bubbly personality too! I would recommend her workshops hands down.

I love Aziza. She is one of my favorite dancers. Have no fear about taking her workshop. She works at a pace that is easy to keep up with.

I have taken from her a few times at Yaa Halla, Y'all here in TX. I just did a class in August where she taught her new choreography & it was beautiful.

The best tip I can give you, was given to me by Isis: if you learn two combinations or moves that fit your body & dancing style, you have gotten your money out of the workshop.

My personal tips - eat a good breakfast, take healthy snacks, take a notebook, don't be afraid to step back & watch how a move is done, drink plenty of water, don't try to memorize the whole choreography, & most important have FUN!

I think the best tip is to not expect to "get" everything that is taught. You might have to practice it at home a few times before it becomes clear.

Thanks Ladies!
It is for all levels (but so was my "bad" workshop) I've been using the practice companion for about a year so I'll be ok on those move, my fear is when she moves onto other things I'll be the one stansing there with the dumbfounded look!

I'm glad to hear she's fairly nice to work with- is she pretty laid back?

A friend and I are going to an Ansuya workshop in a week and we have spent the last month working on our stamina. :-)

Reached my goal November 2009!

Weight Watchers worked for me and now I work for Weight Watchers.

You might want to pick up her DVD -- Aziza's Practice Companion -- so you will be familiar with her terminology and some of the basic things she does in class. ???

Aziza is wonderfully patient;) or at least she was last Saturday at the Vegas Belly Dance Intensive.
How long is the workshop? If it's all weekend, you might want to work on building your stamina. I can't tell you how much increasing my stamina helped in keeping me going and being able to keep up with all of the classes I took in Vegas.
The day of the workshop, make sure you eat a breakfast that will keep you going. I had chocolate milk and a Fiber One bar for breakfast and that kept me going until lunch time without being too full to dance.
Take water and drink often. If you're hydrated it will help your body stay more alert.
Take notes. Aziza gave us a handout of the things we were going over. Some of the moves had different names than I used for them; what I learned as the m&m move she called cutting pie. On the notes I put that as a clarification.
If you have a question, go ahead and ask it. She seems to be one of those teachers who likes to help you get a move down. I don't think you'll have too much trouble keeping up;)
I will say that I think her class was one of the most useful, if not the most useful one I took last weekend. I'm still working on making some of the moves feel natural.

*bounce!*

What does the workshop description say? If it says "all levels," and you attend and feel lost, it means the teacher, as great a dancer as she may be, is not a great workshop leader.

Don't worry so much about getting every bit of a combo, concentrate on a few new moves that you really like. Bring a pad of paper and pen so you can write cheat sheets during breaks and while she talks. I always forget my paper!

Yooooou caaaaan dooo it!

Hi all,

So I am working toward an Aziza workshop this upcoming March. Does anyone have any tips for preparing your self for this? I am kind of freaking out because I tend to not pickup combinations very fast (that is the understatement of the century!)

I took a workshop about 2 years ago with Nourhan Sharif and it was an AWFUL experience- she was way too advanced for me (at least half the other students were in the same boat- made me feel just a bit better) Needless to say I have some trepidation about taking another workshop, but it is Aziza so I am going!
