Interesting links thanks for posting them.
My BMI was 20.5 using their calculator and showed me in 2nd percentile for my weight. My body fat using the measurements method is at 20%. "If you keep on doing what you've always done you'll keep on going where you've always gone"

Mine is right around 21, in the middle of the "healthy" region. I hope to have my body fat measured at my next session with the personal trainer.

21.2 but working my way back down to 20!
I agree that a method that actually measures fat vs muscles is far more accurate. However, in the meantime I am liking this link because it takes into account age and gender: http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/bmi. htm Edited by: LISEINMOTION at: 10/15/2007 (13:04) 6'0" tall, 41 yrs old

My BMI is 19.9 today, but it fluctuates. Not much lower than this, but some days I'm up to 20.4 or so. (I'm an obsessed daily weigher.)

EJOHNCHAT, according to that website, I'm 27% body fat, and the normal for women is 22%. Hmmm....I'm just not believeing that. I got hips and butt, and I don't plan to lose them. I think I'll have a professional calculate that for me before I get too upset over this.

Hey 5K,
There are several ways to estimate your body fat. Check out http://www.he.net/~zone/prothd2.html for the easiest way to do it at home with nothing more than scales and a measuring tape. Remember that all of these means are estimates based on averages. But the key is the correlation between these measurements and health risks. Grace and Peace,

Mine is 22.5 , but I had my gym do a skin folds thing to find out my body fat percentage because I would really like to know that. Isn't anything under 30% good?

Mine is at 23.5 but, more importantly, my body fat % was tested andit is 19.6%. I am more excited about that than the BMI which isn't all that accurate if you are extrememly fit.

My BMI is 18.7. I'm 5'8" and 123. How do you find out what your body fat percentage is?

Mine is currently 21.4. My body fat is approximately 20%...realistically, I can't get much skinnier. Most people tell me I'm too skinny now, but I'm happy.
I don't think BMI is the end-all of "healthy" measurements. Case in point - my boyfriend is 6'6" and 280, which puts him in the obese range (32.4). He's not skinny, but far from HUGE. In order to be considered healthy, he should weigh no more than 215 - which is ridiculously skinny for him, he was pretty thin at 230 (not particularly muscular, just thin). Bonnie

yea my bmi is healthy finally, 24.1. however, as a few of you were saying it's not absolute. although i'm on the high side, according to my scale i'm around 23% body fat (which i think is pretty good)
In a month or so, if I'm able to maintain this weight, I'd like to shoot for another 10 lbs. which would get me at 22.5, my lowest weight and bmi EVER. but for now, I need to make sure I can maintain 145.

24.9 and holding. My profile picture is a couple of months old. I am about 10 pounds lighter now.
I think I look a bit on the skinny side. I hope to shed some more fat and replace it with muscle. I think you have the right attitude Sarah. BMI is just one tool and not appropriate for all. Edited by: EJOHNCHAT at: 8/25/2007 (01:11) Grace and Peace,

Yeah, what Michelle said. I'm really short but not at all petite. For instance, my friend is my height but really tiny... and she weighs about what I do and probably should lose about 20 pounds. To be honest, I'd look absolutely skeletal if I tried any such thing and that's BMI's big failing, to me.
My doctor and I met again after I reached my goal weight and she, effectively, signed off on it. I really do trust my doctor with all of my health issues. But, still... I weigh what I weigh and when I'm having a bad day, I let the little things like BMI stress me out. -Sarah |

I think BMI is a useful tool for determining if someone is really overweight or obese, or really underweight, But when you've gotten to a healthy weight with diet and exercise, and your body composition has changed for the better, it's no longer useful. Mine is still on the higher side of healthy, but I am around 23% body fat, so I know that the additional weight I carry is mostly muscle.

Sarah,
Do I understand you right, that your doctor told you that you should remain overweight? Or did he select a goal for you that he thought was achievable from your starting point? Have you discussed it with him since you have met the goal? If I were in your shoes, and wanted to get down to a 'normal' BMI I would ask the doc why he thinks this weight is appropriate for you, and if there is a reason you should avoid losing more weight. If there is a good reason, at least maybe you will no longer feel that it's a bummer ;-) Congratulations on meeting your goal!! cheers, shrlz ...there is a place in you where you have never been wounded, where there's still a sureness in you, where there's a seamlessness in you, and where there is a confidence and tranquility in you. ~John O'Donohue

I am still technically overweight with my BMI. But my doctor looked at my frame and my then-current weight and selected a reasonable goal for me. While I'm happy at my weight and with my appearance and health, it's still kind of a bummer.

I am at 19.6-19.8. that is my 2 pound fluctuation and I am 5'2". And my new Dr stated his concern like it was a 900lb gorilla in the room. I am glad he asked, but it was a bit accusing to me so when I go back in 10 days I am bringing my food logs for a couple of weeks with me. (He was also very interested in SP so this will give him some info to go on) I hate feeling like I have to defend myself or to always explain that I eat a lot. Geez, I have ice cream almost every night.

Well, I went to the doc and she told me to stop losing weight so I am officially working hard to neither gain nor lose a single pound. She looked at a chart to see if I was in range for my frame size and she calculated my BMI, which is 19.9, to see if it is within the normal range of 18.5 - 24.9. I am curious, do you all know your BMI? What is it?
