Gill good to hear from you and it does sound like you are a little farther ahead in getting over this Covid pandemic than we are. Still canít do to a restaurant and our gyms and pools are still closed. I agree it has been a very difficult year making it hard to stay positive. I really miss my social connections. Thank goodness I always say for FaceTime and Skype.

Good for you for joining a bike group That really sounds like fun!

In my part of the world we're told we're doing well in terms of Covid and vaccines, but the HUGE concern now is India and South America etc where things are very bad. We have national guidelines in place right now - and they ease a little more on 17th May when up to six people (or two households) will be allowed to meet indoors, and hospitality all opens up for indoor eating, drinking and accommodation etc. I'm doing a lateral flow test every four days (free for everyone who want to do it in the UK).

I'm feeling quite low, but am making myself get out and do things - have started swimming at the local pool once a week, and recently joined a women-only cycling group and have been out for one ride with them. But overall, I'm feeling quite numb and lonely really - it's been so hard being socially-distanced from everyone for so long. I have a mini-break booked for the end of May, to go and stay in the Travelodge in Bath where my son and his family live. So, to see them a little bit even if we still can't hug!

Maree, that's great that your DH has a job offer, even before finishing school! If they really like him, they might be willing to keep him part time while he finishes school - best case scenario! The cake problems sound like either the directions were wrong, as you said, or the baking time was wrong.

Bess, it was great being able to meet up in person - though we did sit outside. We're planning to leave Wednesday, with the option to wait until Thursday if needed. No final decision on the train - right now, we're looking at short-term apartment rentals in Bellingham. DH wants to pre-plan everything this time, no idea why, we normally don't do that.

Kellie, that would definitely be a stressful and emotional situation! But keep remembering how strong you are, and that you are building a new life for yourself. Big hugs to you!

Cindy, wouldn't it be nice if we could make people do what we know is the better thing to do? Sometimes it's so painful to watch people we love make decisions that we know just aren't going to work out.

Nell, I'm so sorry about the news regarding your neighbor. This is such a horrible time for things like illnesses. (I just heard that a co-worker in the VI died of cancer. I don't think he was even as old as I am!)

Toni, good for you for being consistent with your plan!!! And the hardest part is to keep doing what we know works, isn't it?

Donna, packing cubes are not only great for organizing (so you don't lose your small things like socks and undies in the suitcase), they also compress the clothing so things take up less space! LOVE them!

Gill, nice to see you again! How are things going in your part of the world?

After a few days of mentally going through different ways to pack, I decided to just grab a few outfits to rotate through for the next few days and then our three or four day drive north. Other items were packed in the cubes - one of clothes that I'll save for the Bar and Bat Mitzvahs (as in dressier clothes), one with items that need to be hung up, and one with cold weather items and all the knits. Everything except the next few days and trip items are now in the rolling bag. I also have a box of kitchen things I bought over this year, and I'll have a box of food for the trip (to be supplemented with fruit and yogurt from quick shops).

So I'm feeling like things are in good shape.

Tomorrow I'll put the knickknacks back, run through the place with the vacuum, and wash the tile floors. Done.

Funny thing - DH suggested that eventually we might want to move into an assisted living situation at some time. I'm in shock! It would certainly make things easier as his condition gets worse, but I'm not ready for something like that quite yet!

Gosh, Nell. I'm sorry your are suffering so much with your condition - every time I see your updates I'm so concerned.

Thanks for the memory - hat shops! OMG, yes! I'd forgotten - it used to be an acceptable 'outing' for us young women/girls to go to the millinery department and try on the hats! I used to have to wash my hair every day (or every other at minimum) when I was younger as my hair was greasy. Now I'm old(er!) I find I can go a whole week before needing to wash it. I still quite like a hat - but don't wear them very often.

Congratulations to your hubby Maree on the job offer. I am not surprised as what employer doesnít want an experienced adult.
Crazy recipe for sure but good for you for finding a way to make it work. I would never have thought of doing that.

Bess glad to hear you are feeling better and hopefully the rains will clear away the pollen.

Cindy, we all love those relaxing Sundays where we get to do whatever we want. You got a lot of things off your to do list.
We are all hoping your N and N works things out for the benefit of the whole family. Such hard times for them too I am sure.
I canít even remember the last time I balanced a check book. I maybe write one cheque a month....maybe. I noticed when we were spending time in the US how many people still paid for items in a store with a cheque. You have not seen that in Canada for decades.

Kellie I am so sorry you had a tough time last night but I guess you are going to have those moments. Thankfully you have so much support and strength to get you through. Wishing you an amazing week, perfect just for you.!

Phebess I know you have mentioned packing cubes before but I have never seen them. I am going to check it out.
When I read your post last night about the family connections the first thing I thought about was you and just like Bess! I love it when those things happen.

Toni, I love ready about your self care, I am so glad it is working for you. Good news your CO family has been vaccinated. I think it could be the fall before we can be together with famiky and friends. Isnít that really sad? I could be a recluse by then!!!

Nell did the Ensure help? I bought my hubby some Boost as per his request but he has only had one. It sure is pricey enough isnít it?

It is suppose to rain today but it sure does not look like it yet. Hubby wants to go for a haircut so I will walk while he is in his appointment. Also will do some exercise and stretching sometime today too.

Onward to another week....

Good morning.

Just got back from a rainy walk. Good to get it in Ďin spite of.í DH has headed to city for one night and I am staying here. We have guests coming on Thursday and I didnít want to feel like a rubber ball bouncing back and forth.

Itís Monday and Iím in week 13 of my self care project. Iím seeing gains in consistency with walking, yoga, and yes, Bess, I got to some strength training yesterday and am feeling it today. We have free weights so I am just following a Spark regimen I found yesterday. Easy way to start. Also seeing some weight loss which lifts my spirits too. Somehow focusing on Ďself careí instead of deprivation is motivating me. So much of weight loss is Ďin my head,í but we all know that, right??

Maree, congratulations to your DH for all heís accomplished after his job loss. Exciting to get that job!! Iím sure itís a sweet relief as well as a reward for all his hard work.

Phebe, you are clearly Ďpacking upí and ready to go. I hope the next chapteróI think you go north to family if my memory is rightóis relaxing and lots of fun.

Our CO son and his wife both got their first vaccination this week. It sure makes us feel safer for them. Iíve gotta look into mask regs in CO to see what the drill is, but I know Iíll feel more comfortable there knowing vaccinations have been rolling out for young AND old.

Kellie, memories can sure whack us up the side of the heart/head, canít they? Iím sad to know you had a rough evening.

Nell, I think your long term perspective is wise. Itís scary for us watching, but sometimes a struggle like Cindyís N & N are going though really does work out for the best. And Cindy, I love how you know you need to be there for the kiddos and that you can be. I know I am closer to my niece and nephew now (they are adults now) because I spent a lot of time with them when their parents split. A loving Ďvillageí can make a big difference.

Hello to everyone Iíve missed mentioning in this post. Gotta go jump into this Monday.

Toni

Good morning, or I guess it is. I was up half the night in the bathroom again, finally gave up at 4 and drank an Ensure because I was starving.

Maree, I'm surprised at a recipe that said to add the wet ingredients one at a time, it would lead to overmixing. Congrats to your DH for his internship.

When I was little there were lots of millinery shops, magical places for a little girl. Women washed their hair once a week, and always wore hats, even to the grocery store. Then came Vidal Sassoon with his blow dryer and no one wanted to mash that carefully blown out look anymore. I think Mom had as many hats as shoes.

Kellie, it gets easier with time, and the years keep on rolling by.

Cindy, I print my bank statements from the website, they are available right away.

We got some shocking news yesterday, a long time neighbor was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. He and my DH have been the old codgers always chattering away about something or other. No idea how neighbors can help, it is still covid and they won't want people in the house. Their kids are fairly local, they went to school with my kids all those years ago, those are the people they'll want close. Hopefully they'll be able to articulate what they need other than privacy.

This morning I have a tech appointment to check the a/c for summer. I sure hope he is on time so I can get to the grocery store.

Good Monday morning!

Nice to see you pop by, Kellie! Sorry for the rough emotional time. Those are bound to come now and then, and not fun to experience, I'm sure. Hope you have a good work day today.

Maree, I never heard of that method of saving a cake! But so glad it worked! And nice you got to see your hubby, and yay on his job offer! A good weekend, I'd say!

Bess, I got my April budget closed out, and my May bills paid, too. And the calendars set up and April stuff transferred to my planner. But I couldn't balance my checkbook yet, as they don't send the statements till a few days into the month, which always bugs me. Anyway, yes, it always feels like a good accomplishment to get that job done. I hope you do get time to do some arty things, not just club or office stuff, though!

I had a nice long Sunday yesterday, that felt like a real rest. Zoom Sunday School with DH, and then he left for our church, and I took mama to her church. She and I came home and had lunch, and DH did not get home till 7 pm! He ended up visiting all afternoon at the home of some Mexican friends, and he had a great time. And I had a lovely peaceful quiet afternoon with a nap, a long walk, time to plan the week's menus, etc. The day was gorgeous, too.

Now, to start the new week. My mind is constantly thinking about my N&N and wishing I could just make them do what I think they should do, and they'd see everything would be so much better. But, alas, I am not a puppet master, so I will just try to make things as safe and stable as possible for the Littles, and keep on praying for the grownups to make better choices.

(I have, by the way, been getting much better at falling back to sleep after mama calls me in the middle of the night. My method of praying for each of you, my Spark friends, seems to work well, as it keeps me from thinking about family troubles that tend to wake me up more.)

Hi all

Way to save the cake Maree! Big hugs to those that need them!

Getting ready to head to one of our sites. Checking in here to keep me focuses.

Rough night last night. I went to my friend's house for dinner. Didn't know her parents and cousin and his wife would be too. First time going there in over a year, my second family. They introduced me to my x. We spent a lot of time there together. I held it together while I was there. Everyone was kind enough not to talk about it. The drive there and back and then when I got home was rocky!

One day at a time.

Onward with the week!

Maree - wow - lots happening in your family! Congratulations on DH's job offer. A summer internship, eh? And good for him for finishing the course. Whatever certification he gets will stand him in good stead. And what an interesting baking story. Glad that it not only turned out well but that you could celebrate your brother's birthday with him and his wife. It must have been a wonderful day. (we're getting rain too)

Phebess - Yes. You had a Very Virginia moment with your cousins and their connections. Isn't it nice to be able to visit in person now? How many days before you head north? And have you decided on that train trip?

Sue - That's a great mantra. for sure, if I DON'T listen to my body I'll only get worse. When I worked I'd drag myself in if I wasn't contagious but it was always a mistake. Especially with allergies. I can't be around people without talking and that would eventually lead to laryngitis and then the only cure was to stay home. Ugh. How I love retirement. But that's really crummy news for your sister. I hope that is just a possibility - not a sure thing.

Donna - yum. Strawberries. What a wonderful way to start the day. I hope your season lasts a long time. May is strawberry time around here too. Glad you enjoyed the milliner. I LOVE hats and have all my life. I had planned to take my 2 ft wide brim hat I bought when shopping once with my dad. He loved a well turned out woman and actually enjoyed avant-garde clothing too as long as it was pretty. This hat looks like it would be hideous on but instead it's attractive. Weird but attractive.

Cindy - I'm so very sorry that your N & N are going through this hard time. They've been through such a lot of rough stuff lately and that can certainly make the grass look greener - but it never is. There are always weeds in that grass on the other side. When I worked in a large office in DC I saw a lot of that and I never saw a happy ending. But each person seems to have to learn that lesson through experience. Prayers flowing out to them that they find a better way. And how wonderful that the vaccination process moved so smoothly. I hope you do well with it.

Nell - I sure hope you found something that sat well on your tummy. And I hope you actually like milk since that seems to be one thing you can take.

Toni - how did the strength training go? You inspire me to pick up my weights. They feel neglected. Well. They have been. Did you get out in the kayak yet?

Yoo Hoos to everyone else on the team.

I felt so so much better yesterday - though today the eyes are burning again. But we've got rain in the forecast and that will help a lot. Our weather is definitely roller coaster weather - with daytime temps swinging from almost 90 to down to the 60s this week. Fine with me - just so long as May 11 is not rainy - since the club is holding its final meeting outdoors that day. Sunshine dancing going on in this house.

Balanced the checkbook yesterday and paid all the bills so I am feeling quite accomplished. I have a lot of phone calls to make today and some correspondence. It is not going to be a very arty 2 weeks. Let us just hope it will be a healthy and active two weeks.

Good morning!

Well I had a nice surprise yesterday. DH decided to come home after all, even though he didn't shoot a turkey. He not only mowed the lawn, but he made us all some fried morel mushrooms.

The new carrot cake recipe was a disaster! I poked it with a toothpick that came out clean, but as the two 9" round cakes cooled, the centers began sinking. They weren't done. I searched how to save a cake and ended up sealing them in foil and baking them longer, 10 min at a time, checking them and finally they felt done. I considered starting over but decided to go ahead and ice it, but also made a pumpkin roll just in case the carrot cake turned out inedible. But it was edible!! In fact, it was pretty yummy but not as moist as I expect. I think the directions are flawed as it said to add the "wet" ingredients one at a time to the dry ingredients as opposed to mixing them in separate bowls and adding the "wets" all at once to the dry ingredients. That's my theory anyway. I may send a comment and see if I get a reply.

We had a great visit with my brother and SIL.

DH received an HVAC job offer; he told them it would be for the summer as he wants to finish school this Fall. So he's getting all of that ready today and tomorrow and will head back over to the houseboat to finish the turkey season, which ends May 10. Rain and cooler temperatures moving in.

More backsquats today at crossfit. 1 rep max. The gym is starting a 6 week challenge so it's possible we'll have some new people.

Hope all have a great day and stay healthy!
