Sue, I'm prone to feeling motion sick in cars if I do anything other than watch the road/traffic/scenery - so no crocheting in the car for me. For some reason I'm okay on a train or plane, but buses and cars for me have always meant not doing anything other than looking out a window or napping.

Nell, someone was explaining to me that women are more prone to auto-immune problems because we have two X chromosomes, so some genetic material is duplicated. Not sure if that's true, but as women we certainly have some medical issues that men never have.

I tried sweeping up the little flower things that keep falling off the live oak trees in our yard, and cover the walkway, driveway, and our car. Of course, as I swept more kept falling down! But at least we don't have the large piles of these things that were there when I started. Though the wind has been off and on all day, with a little rain, and more rain tomorrow. I hope it all washes away!

Nancy Anne - That is distressing news about your mom and her surgery. I hope that the surgery can be done sooner rather than later. Does your mom have some kind of legal document in place that would express her wishes? My mom has a DNR in place (do not resuscitate) which of course is not the same as your mom not wanting the dialysis but that might be something worth looking into. I hope that the timeline all shakes out for you and everything falls nicely into place. I can certainly understand how stressful this has been on top of your move. Glad that you've been able to have the home inspection - well worth it to ensure that everything is properly completed. Hope that the radon is an easy fix for you! Kudos on the unpacking and also being able to get back to using some of your weights.

Phebess - I certainly hope that the surgery isn't cancelled too but I doubt it will be seen as 'essential'. Is the afghan too big to go in the car with you to be finished - or was it you who said you can't knit in the car. I find it a great way to pass the time but working on a big project is usually not practical.

Toni - emoticon for in-person book club meetings! We managed to have a few last fall and one in March. Right now we're shut down again and will be until maybe June depending on how long the stay-at-home order is in place. It's already been extended well into May. Enjoy your day!

Bess - It's lovely to go away and enjoy different experiences and just as lovely to be home again with no place that you have to go! When I have busy weeks (maybe that should be past tense for now) I always enjoy my days at home.

Nell - I hope that the meds soon give you more relief and more importantly, a better night's sleep. A paper shredder is not too big an investment and you could order one online to have delivered. That's what I did for mom a couple of years ago. Check out Amazon or an office supply store.

Cindy - It sounds like you had a most delightful day! Indulging a bit on your birthday is totally the thing to do when someone has prepared a lovely treat for you! Enjoy the time with your son - hope that you have safe and not-too-wet travels.

Donna - I hope that you enjoyed the video visit with your friend! Great that your son and DIL have the papers signed for the new property and that he's been able to have his first vaccine shot. Less than 4 days for hubby and I! I heard that BC was really restricting travel. I know my sister was a bit concerned about my travel back and forth but providing care for a parent and/or respite is a completely acceptable reason for me to be on the road with my bags. Any luck with the car shopping?

Sunny - I don't know if my sister has heard that her surgery might be cancelled although I know she was aware of the possibility when surgeries were cancelled only in hospitals in the southern part of the province. I'm sure not going to tell her! The Botanical Gardens sound lovely! The desert is just so different from what we are used to seeing here but it still has it's own beauty. A "COOL" 80 degrees? That is mid-summer temperature around here!

Had a rather productive day with some winter sweaters washed up and drying (or probably dry) some other laundry done, workouts accomplished in the morning, bed changed and even a little clean out of part of the linen cupboard in the downstairs bathroom when I went looking for some sheets to take up to mom's. The double bed in her spare room only has one set of sheets with a fitted bottom, but I knew I had some still hanging around here - the double bed we have requires sheets with much deeper pockets, mom's does not). While digging for some pillow slips I found a few things buried deep back in the corner that needed to be either tossed or donated so de-cluttering (a 5% challenge goal this week) actually got done when I figured I wouldn't get to it today. Lovely warmish day again too with mostly sunshine but the rain is coming tomorrow apparently. Our church will be back to online services only again due to the most recent restrictions announced at the end of last week.

Have a good evening!

Hey everyone! A quick check-in before I start dinner.

Sam put a new set of shelves in the basement storage area to make up for my missing walk-in pantry from the last house. So big things that we rarely use and seasonal stuff has been set down there. I also finally got the laundry room squared away, so now all boxes but those holding wall hangings are gone from the main living areas. Yay! It's starting to feel more like a home.

Small steps, but at least I did something.

BJ is here for the weekend, happily tucked away in his bedroom at the moment watching Power Rangers DVD's and coloring- A perfect day for him!

Saw a heartbreaking video my sister sent of mom saying that her sincere wishes were to NOT be put back on dialysis if she is unconscious to make that choice. Again, I can't blame her, but I could tell it was hard for her to do. Betsie, my sister, is really trying to cover all of our bases so that the doctors can't bully us into doing what Mom might not want. We've seen it before.

I've been able to lift weights twice this week in the gym-section of the basement (one of the first I set up), which is something. I'd been out of it for months because of my leg procedures. Starting easy, but it's nice to get back to it.

Great to catch up and see what everyone is doing! I'll get back to posting to individuals as soon as I don't feel so rushed.

And now I'm off to make taco's for dinner. I also managed to make two beautiful loaves of sourdough today- Just a pleasant thing to do for a change.

Have a blessed Saturday, everyone!

Enjoy your time on the water. Wonderful birthday pictures. Your landscaping project turned out so well and it is very inviting.

TONI It was a cool 80 yesterday so a perfect day for a walk in the garden, a little warmer than your weather. I would love a break from cooking, we may all go out to dinner next week. Hopeful! Enjoy your LIVE meeting.

BESS Home, your own bed and refrigerator, just heaven. The trip sounds just perfect, walking on the beach and historical houses.

NELL Autoimmune diseases are frustrating, and you have to be on constant alert for the symptoms, I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I had to laugh because I cleaned out some boxes of papers last Fall and part of them were from 1970ís related to our first house. They are now shredded.

CINDY What a wonderful birthday visit with your DD and I still havenít seen my dentistís face. I love homemade biscuits, but I cannot resist them at all when they are warm.

DONNA At least it is Spring, and you can get out of the condo when the weather is nice. It was difficult during the winter, especially with your DH having all of his issues. We are proceeding cautiously and going out early and places that are mostly outside. It is difficult planning outings with a husband who has health issues and there are many places that are off the list.

ECON My sister says that your area is having a beautiful Spring, lots of flowering trees and pretty weather. I am planning a trip to your area but decided to wait until November.

KELLIE Give your self a lot of praise for the strength to get through this session, I am sure there are times you ask yourself WHY.

SUE It must be very frustrating for your sister, who clearly needs the surgery, to worry that the procedure might be postponed. I record a .5 for my weight but round up to the whole number if it goes to .6.

NANCYANNE It sounds like everything is going really well with the house except for a few issues, which always have a cost. I am so sorry about your mom; this is really hard on all of you watching your mom dealing with the problems. Being away adds to your anxiety.

PHEBESS I did a quick run through of your blog and the pictures were amazing. May is coming quickly and I can see you finishing up your projects to get them off your list.

The Desert Botanical Garden is a great place to see how and where different kinds of plants thrive. Last week the garden was awash in the bright yellow Palo Verde trees and the wildflower garden was filled with all kinds of pretty wildflowers, but this week the Palo Verde trees have lost a lot of the flowers and the leaves are filling in. The wildflower garden has fewer flowers, and it will be interesting to see what happens during the summer. Right now, all of the cactuses are starting to blossom and there will be different plants blooming through May. We will not go back until June to check out what is growing as the summer heat takes over. A lot of the same types of plants like irises and geraniums flower through May and into June in our garden. Lavender loves heat but needs to be sheltered from the late afternoon sun, so there is a perfect place in the yard for one.

It may go to the mid 90ís for the next few days which is above normal for this time of the year, then back down for a few days before possibly heading to almost 100 next weekend. It means I have to get up earlier to get in a walk.

When the temperatures are above 90 the pool is warm enough in the shallow end, then May 1 when the temperatures stay above 90, we will be using the pool heater to get it a little warmer until June when it is summer in the desert. I will start up my water aerobic workout once it is comfortable.

Off to attack my to-do list which has been sitting un-done for the last few days.

I have a shredder, but it isn't intended to shred 4 bankers boxes packed with 10 years of Mom's financial papers. I shred my stuff as I go, but when Mom died I had to go through a ton of paperwork, both hers and Dad's, going back decades. I don't know why she kept every bank statement and bill from the 70s on, but she did.

Sunny it sounds like a great day!

Donna Iím so sorry you donít travel.

Nell you can get a good deal on shredders. Costco might mail it to you for free. Also check out Amazon. Itís quick and easy and shredders arenít expensive!

Cindy it sounds like a great birthday!

Bess your trip to the beach sounds wonderful!

Maree have fun on the boat.

Toni if you are going to buy a car go through Costco. They make the deal and there is no bargaining. Everyone check out the electric cars and ask about how and where to charge. It is probably much easier than you think. I love how quiet and smooth my car is compared to gas cars. Also itís great to never go to a gas station again. You can laugh at people waiting to fill up and the cost of gasoline.

I donít drink coffee because it makes me sick to my stomach. I drink water and herbal tea, thatís it.

Take care!

Yesterday I spent a lovely morning at the Desert Botanical Garden, a lovely lunch, a couple of hours of shopping for summer clothes, made dinner for the DD and family, then collapsed. Just getting up and getting out for a walk. I will be back later.

Morning everyone on this suppose to be raining Saturday morning. So far it seems quite nice. I would love to get out there for a walk but I have a FaceTime at 10 with an old friend. I sure donít want to miss seeing her.

Nell, yes we are all so worried about you and keeping you in our prayers. In spite of how awful you are feeling you still seem to be very active. You are one strong, determined lady,

Maree your six hour commute will fly by listening to this audio book. I hope you enjoy it as much as Toni and I did.

Bess, welcome back. It sounds like you had such a lovely time. It is so hard for me to hear everyoneís travels when we are asked to stay in our own community still. This is getting so old!

Toni I would take my hubby cooking anything just to have a night off. I can tell you really appreciated his effort. I know my Dh couldnít even stand long enough to make a meal unless it was just something to pop in the microwave.

Kellie you are almost finished this semester and I know you will be glad to have it behind you. Life should get a little easier for you. I bet the winter just flew by though.

Cindy this birthday celebration just keeps getting better. Enjoy today with the newly engaged couple. The hot tub sounds perfect on a rainy day.

We heard from our son and DIL last night. All the papers have been signed for their new home and DS has had his first shot. They were both excited!
I will do a few exercises in the condo today and the usual household things. Not much else planned unless I can get out for awhile. We will see what the day brings.

Happy Saturday

I drove to the govt center, the shredding event had been canceled. Next one is in July. Now I have to get my son to hump the boxes back down to the basement, I sure can't do it.

Good Saturday morning. I actually slept in till 6!!! Mom and I got up at 2 for about 5 minutes, is all, so this was the best night's sleep I've had in months. I'm guessing she'll be needing to get up really soon, though, so will post a short one here.

The light rain has come here, too, Maree. It shouldn't interfere with my plans with DS and future DIL, except that I'll have to drive in the rain--not my favorite, but it looks like it's going to be a light rain, so not bad.

Yesterday I had a delightful time walking the loop with DH, and then shopping for "a movie" (ended up getting almost $50 worth of movies!), so now I feel like I got an actual present, LOL. Enjoyed my slice of cheesecake when we got home, and then a salad for lunch while working a crossword puzzle. Then I went up the hill to my DD's, and parked at the bottom of her driveway and walked up. It's a long twisty driveway, all uphill, through a forest of REALLY tall fir trees---just beautiful---and it took maybe 12 or so minutes of walking. (It was faster coming back down!) Had a really lovely visit with her and her partner, lots of smiles and laughter, and once we were outside at the picnic table they actually took their masks off. First time I've seen their whole faces since last June! They still won't do hugs, but it was certainly a step forward!

DD baked delicious, giant, buttery buttermilk biscuits, and they served them with honey butter. I should've only eaten one, but I ate two. Felt very full afterward, and did not eat any dinner because I was still full by then, but boy! did I enjoy that treat! Thankfully, the scale only went up 2/10ths of a pound, what with skipping dinner and all that walking, but I calculate I had somewhere around 136 net carbs instead of the 50 or so I'm used to.

Last night DH and I enjoyed one of the new movies we bought---I think it was the only one we bought that we had never seen before. Miracles From Heaven. It was a very sweet, faith-based, based-on-a-true-story, feel good movie, so just right for my birthday evening.

OK, sorry I don't have time to greet each of you by name today (but I guess you're used to that by now, LOL), but I read your posts, and think of each of you fondly, and pray for those that need special prayer (Nell, you are much in my mind these days!) Blessings on each of you!

Another really bad night. I don't know why I need to get to the bathroom 10 times when I'd rather be sleeping. Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease, no one knows why some people's immune systems attack their own bodies. There is more hope now than 20 years ago, but it's all still really slow.

I am so glad I bought my new car last September. Today I'd have to compromise on something, who knew there would be a chip shortage to limit production of everything?

The county is finally having a shredding event, after canceling all of them last year. I have 3 boxes of Mom's papers that need to go safely. I just hope I can be away from a bathroom long enough to do the inevitably long line.

Hello everyone -

It's so good to be home again and with a day where I don't have to get in a car and go somewhere. I've had a delightful week of being on the go but I'm really glad to have a day of being on the stay. LOL.

The beach was wonderful - The 2 warmest days of the week were the days we were there - walking miles and miles on the beach, eating lots of seafood, taking afternoon naps and playing cards in the evening. I don't play cards much but when I do I enjoy it. My hostess had to remind me of the rules to some basic games - and then I fear, she was disappointed to find out that once I remembered, I was wicked good.

Yesterday was a tour of the stately homes and gardens of the area around Middleburg, VA - for Historic Garden Week. It was a smaller tour than previous years but my gardening girlfriend and I had the best time, catching up on each other, talking and hearing about our grandchildren, the latest news from town - since I've been out of touch for 2 weeks. She and I are on a board together and she recently joined another board I'm on - and immediately got off it after the first meeting. That gave us LOTS to talk about. Good decision on her part. It wasn't the right fit for her.

I spent most of my computer time writing a long overdue catch-up blog so I won't be able to respond to all of your posts, but you know I am wishing all of you good health and a day of blissful joy. See you all tomorrow.

Good morning!

Maree, The Four Winds is such a moving book. I listened too, and loved it.
Phebe, I hear those crochet needles clacking, at least metaphorically!
NancyAnne, you must be oh, oh so tired. I hope you have some refueling plans. I bet some of those boxes can wait while you catch your breath.

Nell, do you feel like we are watching you like hawks? I hope not in an intrusive way. We worry, care and pray.
Bess, how was homecoming? If you are like me you are layering up right now. Yesterday was darned chilly.
Kellie, point well taken about asking for help. Speaking of helping.. Last night my DH cooked. It is a small miracle. He seems to groove on directions with Blue Apron, but Iím thinking simple recipes might also do the trick. I just like a one night break from time to time!

Cindy, I can understand a week of break from even the sweetest of littles must be really nice. When you are back together everyone will be so excited. Enjoy your time off.
Kate, no worries. We all get too busy to post some times.
Sue, I drink my coffee plain as well. If I ever drank cream I donít remember it was so long ago. But flavored coffees...not so much. A latte now and then is a treat though!

Donna, we often talk about trading cars often, especially now as we age and donít want to risk breaking down or repairs. Then we donít seem to get to it because we like what we are driving and we donít love buying/dealing here for car purchases. Is the system the same in Canada? No set price really. You gotta bargain? Neither my DH or I are good at that...and certainly donít enjoy it.

Iím off for a full day. My book club is meeting LIVE (be still my heart) and I have a zoom meeting in the afternoon. In between Iíve gotta get some laundry done.

emoticon

Good morning!

I am enjoying a quiet morning at home with coffee, of course. It's beautifully quiet outside, and fresh with the light rain that fell through the night. emoticon I'll head over to the houseboat later this morning.

emoticon for all the birthday wishes. DD wrote this amazing tribute on FB. I need to post a thank you note there, too. It was a great day. I picked up the audio book version of The Four Winds from the library. I know I won't be able to renew it so will need to listen whenever I can. Three hours of driving to and from the houseboat this weekend will give me a good start. Enjoyed the first two chapters driving home from downtown. Donna, I know you read it, and others here.

Nell, wonder what causes ulcerative colitis. And the flare ups. Can the doctors help you figure out how the flare ups can be avoided or is it just something over which you have no control? Sorry this has shown up in your life.

Great hearing from everyone else! Better get this posted. Hope all have a great day and stay healthy!
