That's so sad about your friend, Donna. My mother had Alzheimer's, and it isn't easy watching someone fade away, along with all of their memories and awareness.

I remember my mother's dinner parties, always tons of food but she'd fret for days trying to make things so perfect. She taught me to set a beautiful table, though. But I do feel better having a more relaxed attitude about it. Though at one point, on St Thomas, we hosted a Passover seder through the synagogue, and we ended up with 21 guests. We had to borrow tables and chairs, and by the day of the event we were asking last-minute guests to please bring their dishes and silverware to use. It was a little insane, but great fun despite the crowded quarters. (We had a good sized apartment, but had to move all the furniture out of the front room to get enough tables/chairs for the 20+ people!)

We are having late fall weather here - not as cold, but heavy rains and major wind by late afternoon and evening. Glad we went out for a big lunch, so we could stay in for dinner. I used up some small items in our mini fridge - cheese and crackers make a great light dinner.

Good Afternoon!

I walked 2 miles early this morning. I just got back from a mile walk with Malia and my husband. Not much else happening today

Tomorrow is the basic cookie making and Decorating class. I have everything planned and today I do the final touches of prepping today. My stress level is definitely up.

Morning all, itís nice to start my day with a cup of coffee and ďchattingĒ with my Spark friends.

While I was reading your posts I had a call from a good friend with some pretty sad news she wanted to share with me. She just found out officially that she has Alzheimerís. It was not a surprise as her Grandmother and Mother both had been diagnosed. Can you just imagine how you would feel especially knowing what other members of your family had been through. Definitely tough times ahead for both her and her husband.

Yesterday was another doctor day then to Costco for another change in meds.

Today we are going to a friends foe dinner which is lovely. I am really looking forward to that. Like many of you have noted it will be a very casual dinner party. At this point in our lives this is perfect.

Enjoy your Saturday my friends!

Good morning!

I did post at the end of yesterday this morning, but Iíll just rattle on a bit. Whew, on my last two busy days. Chicago and then a conference in Bethesda, a trek from Alexandria. It was all engaging stuff and Iím glad I did it, but having my feet up at the lake right now feels pretty darn good.

Iíve been reading a compelling and helpful book: Women Rowing North: Navigating Lifeís Currents and Flourishing As We Age. Itís by Mary Pipher and is full of stories about women dealing with changes that come if we are fortunate enough to grow old. One of her ideas is that we all have appointments we must keep that we didnít make. She is speaking of the challenges in caregiving as well as personal losses and changes. I like it because of the wisdom that comes from the stories of others. Itís not a Ďhow toí book so much as an exploration of what is possible.

Heading to the Farmerís Market today to pick up veggies. Managed to grab some protein in the city before we left, but want some veggies. BTW, the food at the conference yesterday was fabulous. Healthy, healthy choices. It was hosted at a Marriott and they had it down. Wonderful to see.

Hey all. My guests have gone home and we're just kicking back this weekend. I LOVE these guests and never see enough of them. They have a huge family and are always dashing here and there to be with them so it's not always easy to hook up. But we have a couple of sacrosanct days we never miss - 4th of July at our house, Messiah in the city and a sleep over at their house.

I've done casual entertaining for years - probably the American version of "Italian" entertaining; good food, plenty of wine, interesting music, lots of conversation. My first big party had to be the perfect Martha Stewart event and, in fact, it was = and it was fun too. But every big party since then has slid deeper into casual entertaining. My MiL was a mistress of the casual party - always ready to throw down another pallet on the floor, as she put it.

As for the deep cleaning - well - I live in a house with antique windows, (loose) built on the windward side of a field that gets plowed up twice a year. Deep cleaning is a necessity - and company coming is a good spur to get it done. Truth is - I like housecleaning my house. It's my house. My dirt, even. Wish it didn't get so dirty so often, but inventorying my possessions is a pleasurable act for me and a little soap and water can be fun to slosh around. Some day I won't be fit enough to do this and I guess I'll have to pay someone else to do it.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone, and especially you, Maree - have fun with your guests.

I remember when women used to have to entertain her husband's clients all the time. One of my father's friends actually had a house specially built for constant entertaining of clients. Can you imagine!

Today is my last day of ironing for the church. I'll finish up and put the iron away for another year.

Have a great day!

Good morning!

I busied myself around the house this morning, preparing the marinade for the flank steak and washing wine goblets. I almost forgot about posting this message. Can you believe that?! I guess I was out of routine since DH is over at the houseboat and we spoke by telephone first thing after I woke up. He will do some hunting and then will come home later today to help me out for the party tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions and support. I have decided to just be me. I used to do this more often on holidays with as many as Thirty family members. But this is the first time I've ever entertained a client at my home, even though these are actually former clients at this point. Our former employee was so bubbly and fun back in the 80s. I can't wait to see her!

My hair appointment got moved up to 8 which suits me fine. I'll stop by the fish market for the shrimp and crab stuffed mushrooms once I'm out of there. I still need to decide on the salad, whether to go ahead and put salad dressing on it and toss it or let the guests choose which salad dressing to use.

Okay I will get this posted. I noticed Toni posted on yesterday's check in. She must have been up very early. Just like me haha.

I hope you all have a great day!
