Nell, sounds like a complicated move with things going in different directions - but it will make life easier both having your mother closer to where you live, and in a situation with more care for her.

Econlady, that sounds like fun!

Phebess, Mom is currently in a 1 bedroom apartment with a full kitchen, living room and office. She'll be moving to a small 1 bedroom and living room, with just a kitchenette, no stove or dishwasher, no countertop to speak of. Dementia patients are better off with as much of their old familiar stuff as possible. I'll use the assisted living's twin bed because she won't have room for her queen anymore (I just ordered new bedding for a twin), and about half of her other furniture will have to go. Some pieces will go to grandchildren (whom she doesn't remember), the rest to Goodwill. All her pots and pans will be donated, I'll take some of her dishes, the rest to Goodwill. About 90% of her clothes will be donated, she will only have two small closets.

I'll know more next Wednesday. The more I think about it, the more I want the packers to handle. It's a big job. It seems like we just did this, but it's been over 8 years since she moved to her current place.

Econlady, do you have a list of what islands you'll visit on your cruise? Let me know if you're going to St. Thomas - I lived there for 25 years.

Nell, is your mother currently in a full apartment or in more of a studio? And how much stuff can she take with her to the assisted living place? I know some have room for residents' furniture, but some places provide all furnishings so residents only need personal items and clothing.

Bess, when we packed to store some stuff and go off travelling, I sent my sister a ton of fabric. She made baby carriers, the kind women tie to their front to carry their babies, and donated them to various organizations helping refugee women settle in Minnesota. It's amazing how many places can use extra fabric and yarn!!! (My great-aunt knit layettes for babies born with drug dependencies, or HIV-AIDS. She was still doing this in her 90s! She was an amazing woman!)

I finished crocheting my roses, and will try to tackle the daffodils today. I found that after two flowers, I had the directions memorized, so it was just easier to keep on with one flower. Eventually I'll add leaves, then a border and crochet them into a shape - square, or triangle, or even a diamond. One I get those all done (and roughly the same size), I can crochet them together to make the afghan. I'm just sort of winging it at this point.

Got in a good walk - took DH over to TJ Maxx so he could shop, and it's sort of across the local highway from our hotel. So he could drive back, and I could walk around for a while and then back to the hotel. Getting grey and cloudy again, though.

I never get enough summer!!!

Hi team,

Bess, congrats on the studio coming along, and for donating so much stuff!

I picked up a load of fill this morning, and one of the 2 patio contractors I called came out this morning as well. I was able to mow part of the lawn while I waitrd foe him to arrive. It will be a week or so before I get his drawings and estimate, and another contractor comes on the 14th. Just need to pick a 3rd for good measure. I've been making good headway on my todo list, and have even practiced piano a bit this week! I'm using the Sparky 10 minute rule- something is better than nothing. I'll do a little werk this evening when hubby is at his game. I should be able to get what I need to done in an hour or 2. And of course, gotta get those steps in!

I'll do more mowing and yard work in the next 2 mornings when it's cool, and will pick up another load of fill on Monday. I learned today that I and the boyfriend of the fill lady (who very nicely hauls the buckets to my car and puts them in the trunk for me) are both contractors supporting the same govt. Agency. And, he works closely with someone else from my company that sits on the same floor as me. Small world, no?

Have a great day, friends!

Maree that’s quite the bundle up. Three pairs of socks and a down coat! Wow!

Good luck Nell!

It’s a carribean cruise and when aren’t at port we will be learning and decorating cookies all day! My travel buddy and best friend came by yesterday with 5 dresses to help me try on. Three fit and I’ll use them on the cruise. You can’t wear shorts or jeans to the dining room at night. I never wear dresses, but them may be my wardrobe.

Have to run!

Good morning. Hard to believe it's the end of August already.

The lady from the moving company called yesterday while I was driving to my hair appointment. We are going to meet at Mom's on Wednesday morning while she is off to her weekly trip to the grocery store. I'll take my nephew since he will be helping me with the move, and he hates my brother's girlfriend more than I do and is willing to be mum about what we are doing. I'll feel better after a professional assessment of what Mom has. I remember the two rules of moving: You always have more stuff than you think you do, and it will take longer than you think it will. She says they usually do a move in one day: pack, move out and move in, but that requires an army of staff. Let's see what she says, I'm willing to take (and pay for) all the help I can get. Sunny, does a one day turnaround sound good about now?

Bess, I have donated fabric and yarn, but it always seems to re-accumulate. Yarn jumps in my cart whenever I go to JoAnn's.

Morning all, Maree that sounds like quite an outfit for you to hike. It must be cooler now with you having to wear down coats for your boat ride. I know you will enjoy the day with your company.

Toni, sorry to hear about your hip and hope the stretching helps.

Bess, you must be the hero of the area with all those donations. Now you have only what you are going to use. Plus it will be so nice to see exactly what you have from now on.

Today is a low key day with no plans for visiting anyone. Dh needs a day without much to do. You can only be social for so long! emoticon

To everyone in Dorian's path... please be safe! My in laws are in Florida (Boynton Beach).. we are concerned for them.
The summer went so quickly! I know it's not officially over but this certainly feels like the last weekend. I took advantage of the fact that so many people are away and had my colonoscopy done yesterday. I was taken in immediately, the procedure went well. Two little polyps so now I just wait to hear from the doctor to see if I come back in five years, or in three. I was tempted by Cologuard, the "at home" test for cancer, but read that it had about a 12% inaccuracy rate BOTH ways... people were being told they were fine when they were not, and people were being told something was wrong, having the actual colonoscopy, only to find out all was well. So it was worth the prep the day before to do it, "the right way". Are you all up to date on yours?
Have a great last day of August! emoticon

Dorian looks to be aiming at the Carolinas now, but Irma did this same back and forth for days-it could all change again. So it’s still up in the air. But we’ve prepped as much as we can, except for a few things to do around the house. Going to continue as planned today for prepping and see tomorrow.

On mobile, so I’ll leave you with that. Have a good weekend, all!

3 pair of socks, Maree? wow. I don't think my feet would fit in my shoes - even loosely laced. that must be some very rugged terrain
Toni - I AM enjoying this lovely weather - I see we have a few hot days next week but they won't stick around.
Phebess - I HATE those roundabouts. But then - I am of the old school that says Stop Look and Listen at an intersection. Nowadays it seems that red lights mean speed up and dash through - and since nobody tickets people for running them any more all the signal lights just have to be delayed. well listen to me, all old lady curmudgeonly. LOL. DH loves them. And he NEVER runs red lights, either.
Poindextra - YUM I love scallops - I think I"ll put in an order for them at the seafood store
Sunny - you have my sympathy. But think how nice it will be to have inventoried all your things. And soon you'll be settled in that new house. That art studio tour sounds heavenly.
Bea - enjoy camp!
Donna - yup. I know the feeling. tight pants are no fun
Kellie - I love to do a DVD marathon now and then - all the shows DH doesn't want to watch.
Jamirblaze - I'm thinking of you as the storm closes in. Wishing it shrinks quickly upon landfall. Take care. stay indoors.
Econlady - where will you be cruising?
Nell - My DH likes leftovers but we lived for years in a cabin without electricity, so, no refrigeration. I learned to cook exactly enough - and he got in the habit of eating it all. Now and then we have leftovers but it's hard for me to remember to serve them. I always feel virtuous when I do. We do have dogs.

I stubbed my little toe, working barefoot in the very cluttered spare room yesterday. Now it's swollen and hurts even with shoes on. Well - I know better. I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of my knitting and sewing supplies. There's a huge bag of yarn to give to Goodwill and another really huge bag of fabric to give to the 4-H sewing teacher. She was super thrilled because she says usually they get only quilt block sized pieces as donations. All my fabric is in dress lengths. Here's hoping the room will be completely emptied by the end of this weekend.

Good morning!

A down coat!!! We are not there yet, Maree. Have a wonderful day hiking and enjoying your friends.
Phebess, you have reminded me of “roundabouts” which are becoming more common everywhere. I have grown to like them and I think they are even coming to our lake community to ease a tricky traffic spot, but they sure take some time to adjust to. Your poor hubby!
Jamir, hope you stay safe. This morning it sure looks like it is coming your way.
And yes, Poindextra, people seem to be loading up for the weekend. Did not go to Costco, but our local grocery store was packed. The Food Lion was really staffed up though which was a plus.
Sunny, what a lovely way to escape your ‘box canyon”. I cracked up at your ‘eye level’ comment.
Bess, I trust you will enjoy this beautiful weekend in Virginia. We sure are.
Kellie, you are a marvel of consistency. I know where to go to find inspiration to work out wven when my usual avenues are inconvenient for some reason.
Econ, I am with you on left overs. As a cook, we need ‘em, right? Nothing like a time when dinner or lunch are all ready.
Nell, big transition for all of you as you work to move your mom to a better place.

We are heading to the Saturday market for veggies today and planning to walk as well. Yesterday I swam and then did some hip stretching from a Spark blog that is helping me worth through a stiffness on one side that has stopped me from sitting cross legged. (I’m the odd woman out at yoga, lol!)

Have a wonderful day, all. toni

Good morning! I am dressing for our john boat ride out to the islands and then we will be hiking for a couple of hours. Our guests all arrive this morning. There will be a big boat to wash, namely the houseboat, when we get back and then we will take it out to the sandbar for the day.

I read through all the posts and hope to stop back. It takes so long to get dressed a hike, three pairs of socks, then the boots and then Gators over that. I'll be wearing the down coat for the boat ride. Hope all have a great day!
