Last summer we cleared out our parents' house, which is now up for sale - and it's very weird being in town but not staying there. So I feel for you, Nell.

And FairhavenQ, even Bellingham was overcast from all the smoke in the air! Seems to have cleared out by this evening, but yesterday and much of today were not good! I have asthma, so I only took two short walks outside today, to avoid as much as I could.

Calories good too. So should be a good day.

My mom has very little that any of us want. She has pared things down since my dad died and she moved. I have also noticed that the next generation prefers IKEA so I have been getting rid of things

Went to a neighborhood party and really watched what I ate. However the salmon dip was too much of a temptation. So the weight is up 2 pounds while I am still working on the 2 vacation pounds left.

While I was on my way to church this morning, the sky looked so angry and dark. I did make it to church without a mishap, but while we were having praise and worship, the heavens opened up and man the rain came down in sheets. Lightning hit the top of the cross on the church, and the power went out, but we were all singing the chorus of this song....

www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS5S8Unvm48

We didn't skip one beat, but just kept singing and the power came back on in a couple of minutes. The power kept going off and on for about 10 minutes, but by God's Grace, we just kept singing praises to Him and all was very well!!! The Cross at the top of the church wasn't even damaged!

Blessings!

It's a beautiful day in Nebraska with temps in the 70's. I did some barn chores and now time to clean the backyard. Of course, our dog will get his walk today and maybe I'll do a short run. I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!

Good afternoon everyone,

I took my 45 minute walk this morning, and then sat down to do the practice exam for my class. It took me 2.5 hours, and I'm very pleased with my 80% score. I e-mailed the instructor the questions I'd like to go over in this afternoon's class session. I also need to go over ALL of the questions to make sure I understand the reasons for all the answers. I still have a lot of studying (and 3 more full-length practice exams) ahead before taking the actual exam, but at least I feel like I've got a decent foundation now.

I agree with Nell on the need for a support system. I don't know where I'd be without mine.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi All, I walked the dog this morning too. I feel stressed out. I am always running to do things. I have work today. I am trying to get the third floor painted and I am looking for new windows. It is very hard to afford new windows but I know I need them. The old wooden ones I have are starting to riot out. I am very stressed and have gone up a pound too. Linda from bean town

I have a neighbor down the street whose garage and basement is full of her mother's furniture. Her kids loathe it, never even wanted one piece in their rooms when they lived at home. I love traditional design, but this furniture would be too stuffy even for me. My friend's husband won't have it in the house because it's the most uncomfortable furniture you have ever sat on. But she won't let it go. She can't use her garage, and her kids can't put their own stuff in the basement because it's so full. I keep small stuff to be sentimental about: sterling flatware and dishes, jewelry, books, lamps, and a couple of small pieces of furniture that actually fit my house. The rest is gone, who knows where. Modern aesthetic runs more to Target than Mastercraft Interiors.

All that talk of Fall and Winter and rain are making me jealous today, as I look out my window at all the smoke in the air. My windows are closed because the air is so smokey it doesn't feel good to breathe. The fires aren't near us, but the winds have blown the smoke this way, and there must be some kind of air pressure thing just holding it all close to the ground. I pray it lifts soon! In spite of the bad air, I walked the dog early this morning, and rode my exercise bike for 20 minutes. I wanted to do a good workout yesterday, but it felt like it would be unhealthy with the air so bad. However, I was up a pound today, so I just went ahead and did the small workout in spite of the air.
As for going through loved ones' possessions, boy, that is a tough job! Especially if you're sentimental! My house is full of stuff that's not really my style, but I'm too sentimental to let some of it go. I'm trying to get over that, but it's difficult.

The salad sounds delicious! Now, when you spray the toadstools, is it with the aerosol Lysol, or you put liquid Lysol around the base?

Blessings!

Here's Today's Hint from Aunt Mandy: You can get rid of toadstools in your yard with Lysol. it may take several applications but it works. If you attempt to take them out by hand, certain types will fling spores in every direction, turning one toadstool into dozens, a clever fungal prank. Toadstools are a timely subject around here. All this rain has led to toadstools by the dozens, some small and some approaching beach umbrella size.

While DH is out of town, I've invited my stepmother and a mutual friend of ours for a ladies' luncheon tomorrow. I warned them in advance it will be low-carb/high-protein and they were fine with that. This is an opportunity to practice my low-carb skills while entertaining. I'm thinking a salad with pecans, red onions, bacon, cheddar cheese, chicken, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, baby spring mix and a mayonnaise-based dressing shouldn't represent a hardship. I'll substitute a pinch of Splenda for the honey in the dressing and leave out the dried cranberries but it should still be good.

My mother did clear out so much stuff that we were able to clean out their house in 1 month, spreading all sorts of things around the family and having an estate sale for all the rest. The one gigantic pile of letters/stories/photos ended up at the librarian's house (mine) and I am still slowly plowing through it. I did a quick divide of photos & letters and sent a packet to each sister but the stories Mama wrote will be transcribed in a few years - a winter retirement project - and shared with all.

I, otoh, have a huge pile of clutter and junk for my son to clear away. bwa ha haaaaaa.

With the exception of a couch and a futon, all the rest of our furniture came to us from family. I like old furniture, even the curlicue Victorian stuff and the huge ball footed empire stuff. My daughter in law is all about the Ikea. Guess the auctioneer will be here someday.

Ate party food last night and my weight is up. Today will be all about the green smoothies. and yes - I am hearing the autumn sound of crickets in the evening. but I love it.

Become it

Nell,

I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm also rejoicing, because there is no more pain and in Glory, with our big brother Jesus, seeing Him and the Father face to face.

It is hard to go through the things of a dearly departed loved one, but it's something that you choose to do, out of love and respect. There was only one thing that I wanted that was my mom's and that was an original book of poems by Hawthorne. I saw that book when I was 12 years old and I asked for it then and she told me that when she passes I could have it. It's still up in my daddy's attic, as he's not able to bring himself to go up there and go through her things. Now, mind you my mom passed away 13 years ago and daddy's been remarried for 11 years to a WONDERFUL woman! So, I wait patiently.

As for your children not showing interest, in having anything, you keep it and perhaps they will understand the value, of those possessions, as they see them in your home. Then, when you go on to Glory, they will want them, as they were yours. Therefore legacy gets passed down to the next generation.

I'm here for you, as well as others, here in SP Land!

Maree,

Yes, Spring and Summer are wonderful seasons, however, I prefer Autumn and Winter, simply for the fact that it's easier for me to breathe! I do enjoy the cooler weather and where I live most times the lowest temperature it gets is about 30 degrees. Of course, it has taken a notion to snow a total of 6 times since I've lived here and I moved here in 1982. Can you tell that I don't care for snow, either?

It's a GREAT day here, as God allowed me to open my eyes to another day that was not promised. It's a true blessing and a gift from Him, that I choose to unwrap with the utmost care.

Blessings!

It's hard to go through the things of a loved one after a death. But I know that some of the things I have were passed to my father or my mother in law from their parents and their parents and their parents yet before them. And I have family and friends around to help me, not just with the stress of the dissolution of the accumulation of a life that I so miss, but in dealing with the fact that my kids just don't want some of that stuff that I so value. I need people around me to go through anything difficult. Those people can be real or online, as long as I am not alone. I was told long ago in my 12 Step Program that I am only as alone as I choose to be. I'd never thought about it, but they're right.

Good morning!

Happy to see a message from Spark Guy today. He had the chore of cleaning out his mother's house. That is such an emotional event after such a great loss. I just could not throw some things away and now, nearly 30 years after she passed, it's time to pass along those things to others so I don't leave that burden to my DH and daughter.

Cloudy cool day yesterday on the river until the sun began to sink low in the sky and we enjoyed another beautiful sunset. I hate to admit it, but Autumn is in the air. It's always been hard to see summer slip away; I used to battle the blues terribly at this transition. I finally worked through that sadness, though spring and summer bring out the true joy in me. It's a feeling of a warm embrace somehow. Kissed by the sun, some say.

Okay, enough rambling! Hope all have a great day!
