Thanks for all the input! He does have the tendency to herd, so maybe I will look at that. I am not sure what is available here, I will have to look into it. He doesn't like swimming yet, but I will also see what else is around here.

I agree with what do you like. Look into all the events they have around you and what he might like as well as what you would like. Does he act more like a cattle dog or the lab? If more like the cattle dog, you might like herding if you have trainers close. With that cross, dock diving might be really fun for you. There are a lot of cattle dogs doing that, most cattle dogs like water (except the one I have) and labs are good at that.

What other things does your trainer offer?

Does agility appeal to you or are you condisering it just because the vet suggested it?

There are so many dog sports you can do - Barn Hunts, Dock Diving, Rally and Obedience - for titles, Lure Coarsing, Dog Power sports, Freesbie...and of course agility.

I guess I would want to know more about you and what you like to do?

Agility is fun....be careful not to run a dog that is still growing (under two years) as you might damage their growing body. If your guy is younger than that I recommend Rally which will just sharpen your dogs skills and is still fun for both.

If you can afford it, agility would be fun for both of you. Good exercise!

I have a Lab/Cattledog mix who is very smart. He has graduated puppy and Intermediate obedience easily even if we didn't do our homework as parents. The vet recommended Agility for him because of the cattledog piece, and my normal trainer doesn't have that. I could max out the training available by the known trainer first, or go on to a new one for agility now...what would you do?
