So I clearly have a MUTT, and I knew that going in. I am SO happy though that he is really thriving and is eager to learn and fit in to society! Not all care about what is expected and he does! He is very good at entertaining himself when bored and also he is very noisy, so if there is an issue I know because he is whining or making weird noises or barking. Very communicative! He makes about 20 sounds for different things! He graduated Puppy class with flying colors and will move on now to intermediate and eventually I will take him to agility. He needs the challenge! I can see even obedience class is below him! He makes us look like great parents even if we never practice! emoticon

Sorry Cindy, that was about 5 or 6 years ago, so I don't remember the company names, but I'll have a look to see if I still have any of the paperwork. I went through a "purge everything" phase some months ago and shredded tons of stuff, so I may not have anything left now.

All my breeding records, contracts, puppy buyer information, - all among the items I shredded since I had made the decision to finally retire from breeding. I emptied an entire 3 drawer filing cabinet by the time I was finished.

On the ACD group on Facebook a lot of people have been doing DNA testing on their dogs (mainly the rescues) and have been getting the ACD part right, at least. Most of them use a company called Wisdom Panel. Several years ago someone on the ACD list (another place) sent in her dog's DNA and got everything BUT what was part of the ACD makeup. Hers was a registered ACD that she knew the pedigree on. I have always wondered how they manage to figure out what breed since way back in the past the breeds were developed from several breeds.

Cindy - I wouldn't put too much stock in the DNA test results. I know way too many people who have done tests using different labs and had very inaccurate responses.

Just for a "lark" another breeder friend and I each sent out samples to 4 different labs -both here in Canada as well as in the USA.

Mine came back from 2 of the labs saying a mixed breed including Doberman, Pinscher, Australian Shepeherd and Terrier. The 3rd lab had a completely different set of mixes, while the 4th one was the only lab that got it right!!! The dog I used for the testing is a Rough Collie whose pedigree I can personally track for over 15 generations.....

My friend's Golden Retriever didn't have even one of the 4 labs name him as a purebred ANYTHING, and not one of them agreed on the different combination of mixes that they each claimed that he was...... She can go back even farther personally in his pedigree since her parents bred Goldens too.

It was an expensive " trial" for us to do, but very interesting if almost totally inaccurate too.

Congratulations on such a good puppy. Let us know what the DNA results are.

Looking at how people got their dogs, mine was a breeder placement when I asked about bloodlines. She said she had one she would give me. Good thing it was a breeder because I couldn't afford to feed her otherwise. Used everything on my truck. Lori will get her food for her if I need help. She is a sweet girl who will lay next to me or get excited to go for a walk, whatever I do with her.

I was a proud mama today to see that he was the best socialized and the most apt to listen to commands of the 3 in puppy playtime! emoticon

I am about to send out a puppy DNA test today. I am just too curious and also want to know so I can help HIM better. I am hoping for lab and LAZY breed, but I am thinking not based on his behavior and activity. I think he is a herding breed too...based on his behavior at puppy class.

Hi, Glad your new pup is doing so well. I got a new pup when my smallest dogs were a few years old. I was lucky, the new pup is another female, and smaller than the other two. She loves to horse around with them, and then licks them off. Occasionally they get into it, but nothing serious. The newest one is a chiweenie. She was rescued from a shelter in a very rough area with a lot of dogs running loose in the desert. Somehow she stayed sweet and loving, and the rescue did a good job of socializing her. We got her at a pet shop where the rescue was having an adoption fair.

i very nearly almost took another rescue..but my current newf has major cardiac problems and cant be stressed. hard to say if a new dog would be a companion thereby lessening stress or be a problem causing more stress. so i'm going to just play it out...

It is wonderful to hear that your puppy is doing so well. Makes me want another little fellow but I can hardly keep up with the two dogs we have. Enough already!

That sounds a little like when I took Annie to her first puppy kindergarden class. I think her Westy friend was a little bigger than a Havanese, though. Annie was actually very gentle with him, but picked him up with her feet and turned him over on his back before starting to play. Annie was close to 4 months and the Westy about 2 months, so quite a difference in size. Then the teacher brought in her full grown GSD and that got Annie nervous.

Thanks everyone! Thanks to the teachings of my older dog, he is also way better socialized than the puppy he met at puppy playtime! We went today and he was way ahead of the game. He was good, but was like "bring me a REAL puppy!" It was a Havanese that isn't very socialized and has an anxiety ridden Mom. emoticon He kept hiding by the people. But it is good for him to get to know that there are different types of dogs that like to play different games. When he gets bigger, he will need to know not to mess with the little ones so roughly. Then we met a baby toy poodle that was half his size!! He was very good and very respectful! I was a proud mama! emoticon

Not sure if you can do this, but we have a doggy door so our dogs can go out when ever they need to. Our older dogs always showed the young pups the ropes. Glad doggy class is going well!

We started puppy class and he out-shined the older Golden Retriever in class! Beautiful, but she is unruly! His coat as turned around from ratty and dandruff to shiny and thickening. He has got confidence now to do things in the yard, and explore, and go places like the pet store without anxiety and without his big brother!! He has learned to tell us when he has to go out, after going in the house for some time. He has been sweet and lovable the whole time, which makes it all worthwhile!
